At Davis Feliz Salon, Expect Excellence
Davis Feliz Salon just celebrated their three-year anniversary in June. Run by husband and wife team Davis, the owner and creative director, and Meagan, the business director, the salon prides itself on genuinely caring for each guest, ensuring they leave confident and happy.
WHERE LUXURY MEETS HOSPITALITY
“We aren’t as concerned with our bottom line as we are with our guests,” Meagan said. “We really do value each individual person.”
The pair have been married for eight years, sharing four children together. Their business motto, “Good is not good enough where excellence is expected,” is carried through

their marriage as well. “We believe that the Lord wants excellence from us,” Meagan declared. “We’re always going to continue to do better and be better. We want to make sure every guest has the best outcome that they imagined, or better than they imagined.”
The low-key luxury salon provides high-end styling services noted by their proficient team of technicians, stylists, and colorists — all who have been educators in the past. “Everyone is very knowledgeable and can basically tackle anything,” Meagan explains. “We’re not about the glitz and glam,” she continued, “but we are about doing things well in a peaceful environment.”
Both Davis and Meagan fell in love with the creative aspect of the hair industry, drawn by the beautiful collaboration between artist and guest. “It’s such a freedom of expression to witness and be a part of,” Meagan said. “There’s something really special about people coming in of any age, any background, and always leaving confident and happy.”
Originally from the Dominican Republic, Davis has been in the industry for over 20 years, first testing out his skills on friends in his late teens. Barbers took notice of his talent and he ended up getting recruited to the acclaimed barbershop in New York City. “He loved the artistic aspect of the craft and has grown and blossomed from there,” Meagan commented.
The salon’s specialty is a sophisticated look with modern elements, to which the duo explains “we specialize in precision cuts, starting every haircut and color with precision.” The modernity, of course, comes from whatever’s trending at the moment, which currently includes the shaggy, layered look and bangs.
“We can add that in and make sure the client is still getting a precise haircut,” Meagan states of combining the two aspects. “Or we can do a super sleek French bob.” No matter the case, the team never falters on precision and “doing things right.”

Our Favorite Bourbons
Under $150
ARTICLE BY ANTHONY ADAMS
We were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon under $150 and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared.
Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!
Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.
BLANTON’S SINGLE BARREL BOURBON
Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.
— BlantonsBourbon.com ($100-$150)
BASIL HAYDEN’S RYE BOURBON –AGED 10 YEARS
In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.
— BasilHaydens.com ($75-$100)
PINHOOK ‘BOURBON WAR’ VERTICAL SERIES 5 YEARS
Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,
cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.
— PinhookBourbon.com ($75-$50)
EAGLE RARE 10 YEAR
Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.
— EagleRare.com ($30-$50)
OLD FORESTER 86 PROOF
While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.
— OldForester.com ($20-$30)
MCAFEE’S BENCHMARK OLD NO. 8
Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.
— BuffaloTraceDistillery.com (Under $20)

Healthy Eating in September
Back to school means, back to preparing school lunches. The start of a new school year is the perfect time to try new school lunch recipes! These ideas listed below are also relevant for easy lunches on the go.
For elementary school age children, bento boxes have received justified popularity as this can help introduce a variety of foods; therefore, a variety of nutrients, in a single meal. Many of the bento boxes on the market are easy for children

to open and allows for a longer time actually enjoying lunch, rather than waiting for an adult to assist with opening up each individually packaged item. The methodology of packing different foods separately also helps ensure that the food will preserve until lunch time. And finally, since all of the components of the lunch is laid out in the bento box, your child will have autonomy over the foods that he or she will consume and in the order in which it is consumed. This is an important building block in building a healthy relationship with food.
Before looking through the lunch ideas below, it is important to consider that the evidence used to create the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests that 8-10 exposures of a certain food may be necessary before a child will develop acceptance towards it. Providing one newer food, along with “safe foods” (foods that you know your child enjoys) in a new environment (i.e. school), can often encourage further exposures to this newer food.
Unique Sandwich Ideas:
Since many schools do not allow peanuts to be brought in, sunbutter is typically a welcomed alternative. Adding variety and creativity to this classic sandwich can make your child’s lunch even more exciting (and nutritious!)
• Sunbutter + Banana or berries on bread
• Cheese + bell peppers + tomatoes in a wrap
• Hummus + cucumbers in a pita
Sides:
The other components of the meal should include some of your child’s “safe foods.” Other sides can include some of the additional fruits and vegetables that are in-season this month, along with a dip to make the veggies more fun!

An Opulent Entrance
THIS AWARD-WINNING FOYER’S BLEND OF TRADITIONAL & MODERN ELEMENTS WAS PIVOTAL TO THE DESIGN
There is so much to love in this stunning Wilton estate’s dramatic entry foyer. The sea of blue saturating the walls, trim, and casings, and an elegant zinc top table with hand-hammered metal base; creates an airy feel while anchoring the space. Once inside, your eye is immediately drawn up to a magnificent chandelier that hangs gracefully from the high ceiling, casting a warm and inviting glow. The freshly carpeted stairs in patterned blue and lavender tones lead up to the second floor; with custom designed wainscoting creating the architectural elements necessary to carry the weight and scale of the room. The stair railing was painted with a brilliant blue gloss from the Fine Paints of Europe. The cozy traditionalism of the blue country house painting adorning the wall at the top of the stairs not only added further elements of color but made the family feel welcome at the end of each day.

The metallic leaf print ceiling paper applied on the domed ceiling enveloped the room in warmth maximizing the elegant feeling in this exquisite one-of-a-kind space.
Beth Krupa, Principal of Beth Krupa Interiors in Greenwich, explains this foyer’s dramatic impact comes from the blend of traditional and modern design elements. “We were presented with a foyer in a newly purchased home which was narrow with an overly tall ceiling and a lackluster attempt at formality. Beginning with the signature paint color, we designed, specified, and procured focal furniture pieces, custom wallpaper, artwork, lighting, hide and stair runner, and custom wainscoting. The traditional wainscoting elements gave the client comfort while the modern chandelier and entrance table created an exciting entrance. The successful combination of these two styles was pivotal to the design. Every piece was carefully curated to create a welcoming and awe-inspiring entry point that set the tone for the entire space.”
The star of the show is the ‘Mother Chandelier’ by Barlas Baylar. An elegant piece of illuminated art, its 3 miles of draped jewelry-quality polished nickel chains emits a shimmering light welcoming you into the home while making a stellar first impression.
A tall wood glass-front Habersham lighted display cabinet provides space for cherished items, and a mod upholstered teardrop shaped ottoman brings color to the forefront and makes for a welcoming vignette with the organic shaped bronze mirror.
A built-in wine refrigerator by Miele in the main hallway opposite the kitchen provides easy access to the perfect meal wine pairings.

for us, flowers will never go out of style
48
Having beauty around you affects your mood. It makes you slow down and appreciate what’s around you. Buying yourself flowers is a beautiful act of self-care and an undeniable display of affection when gifting a bouquet to a friend or significant other. From Mother's Day and Valentine's Day to graduations and any old Tuesday, gifting yourself (and others) the gift of living beauty will never go out of style.
In addition to their fashionable appeal, flowers and plants have insane healing properties that not only cheer us up, but improve our health and wellbeing. Exuberant orange orchids and darling pink peonies part of a dinner party centerpiece can be the perfect icebreaker for strangers meeting for the first time. A classic bouquet of pure white hydrangeas and lilies tells a loved one you are there for them. A Rose Très Chic floral design bouquet says, “Happy Birthday, I love you.”
For over 100 years, four generations of the McArdle family have provided Greenwich
and the surrounding towns with the very best floral arrangements, indoor plants, outdoor plants, garden supplies, gifts and love through the trusted and beloved McArdle’s Floral and Garden Design nursery and gift shop.
What originally began as a seed and supplies store that landscapers would visit to pick up their supply needs for lawn mowing and horse caretaking, has now become a bountiful and flourishing oasis for garden lovers and landscaping pros alike. “This is legitimately the oldest business on record in Greenwich,” Caitlin Clonin, the business’s former creative director, tells me.
The original location was on Greenwich Avenue, filled with indoor plants and outdoor plants, eventually moving to cut flowers and home decor, and is now a full-service florist operation in charge of weddings and events, proms and dances, and countless other special organizations within the community. “We pride
ourselves on having styles that will work well with anyone’s decor,” Clonin says. Whether you’re looking for flowers to fit a Mid-Century Modern, Victorian or Contemporary home, or just the right plants to match your zen office or workout studio, odds are, McArdle’s carries it.
The McArdle’s team members are experts in the Art of Flora, using the highest quality of materials one can get their hands on. All you have to do is take a peek at their website, or better yet, experience the floral paradise in person, to see the level of care that goes into taking everything they do to an unparalleled, elevated place of standard.
“We love helping Greenwich homeowners pick out blooming plants or succulents to put that final touch on their homes,” Clonin said. McArdle’s prides themselves on staying special and relevant by sticking to “The McArdle’s Beauty and Quality Standards,” which includes using the highest quality of materials possible.

“OUR STAFF IS MADE UP OF CREATIVE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE FLORAL INDUSTRY FOR 40+ YEARS.”
From curating flowers grown through Holland and Europe to working with farms all over the Netherlands and parts of Europe, they are a real cut above the commodity flowers and plants you see in other places that may not be as fresh or won’t last as long.
Painting the picture of heading to JFK to watch the flowers coming off the plane from Central Columbia, Ecuador, or other exotic place where McArdle’s products are grown, Clonin states the garden and design center only buys “the filet mignon, Grade A level of quality" for their customers.
In addition to their standard of elegance and quality, the McArdle’s team is very much embedded in the community as well, constantly partnering with organizations like the Bruce Museum, Make a Wish, and the Greenwich Symphony, to name only a few.
The garden and design center also sells gifts including candles and cosmetics, books, and gourmet treats, most of them crafted by local artisans and vendors. “If it relates to nature, plants, and wellness at all, we will purchase it from them,” Clonin states of McArdle’s product lines.
Their gift shop includes elegant and understated items that people can refresh their homes with each season, and that works for a broad range of styles – whether that’s preppy chic, casual bohemian or minimalist. Currently stocked is a candle line that was founded by a local woman which represents positive wellbeing and good mood, a cool range of utilitarian books on how to garden and decorate with nature, as well as seasonal decor items like pillows, lamps and pretty watering cans. “If we
can get our hands on local makers, we love to support them,” Clonin states.
For Fall, the garden center will have a lot of textural aspects to choose from, including berries, grasses and roses. From “crazy colors of hydrangeas” of bright purples, vibrant greens, pretty pinks and deep reds, to an incredible pumpkin selection with the most unique gourds and giant white pumpkins, Clonin assures me they “keep up with the times,” style wise.
“Our staff is made up of creative people who have been in the floral industry for 40+ years,” she says. “Everyone is really passionate about bringing their own enthusiasm to the work.”
As for customers coming in to peruse the aisles for their autumn style desires, the team of florists loves helping them create personalized creations. “Everyone goes nuts doing tablescapes with big branches in the foyer and using a lot of natural elements,” Clonin says of decorating for the Fall season. While Fall is indeed a busy time of year for the business, Thanksgiving is one of the biggest floral holidays for cut flowers and plants, with Christmastime synonymous with huge Christmas trees, wreaths and bows.
“We’ll go to people’s homes and hang things, and even do a whole curbside makeover,” Clonin says. “Whatever they want.”
McArdle's is located at 48 Arch Street in Greenwich. They are open Monday-Saturday 8 am-5:30 pm.

DZINLY BRINGS THE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES OF EXTERIOR DESIGN INTO THE USER’S OWN HANDS
Jackie Mosher is a dynamo. You can feel the energy when talking to her. You can imagine the wheels churning in her brain. You can see it in the Instagram videos she posts for her company, Dzinly.
It’s no wonder, then, that the pioneering concept that is Dzinly was born from her innovation, along with her husband, Matt Mosher, starting as a seed in 2014. “Matt and I were on a flight home from a family vacation with our kids,” she says. “We were just talking about business, one thing led to another, and I’ll be darned if we didn’t write this out on a little Wet Nap.”
“Business,” to the Moshers, is the wide world of real estate: Jackie has been in the real-estate industry for more than 20 years, including running her own residential appraisal company; Matt launched his landscape architecture firm, Mosher Design Co., as a teenager. Together, the pair of serial entrepreneurs realized that there was a very simple need.
The answer: Dzinly (dzinly.com) is the much-buzzed-about Royal Oak-based, nationally reaching virtual technology platform that lets users easily, and affordably, reimagine a home’s exterior before investing time and money on materials, contractors and DIY projects. Launched in 2021, it is revolutionizing the way people view home improvement, literally.
Pay a visit to Home Depot on any given weekend, and you’ll see swarms of shoppers squinting at paint samples, trying to imagine what the colors might look like on their own home’s exterior. Dzinly removes the guesswork from the process — plus so much more.
“In the whole design world, it's sort of an accepted unknown: An architect or designer or whoever will propose a project, and suggest where to put something, what color and so on, and the homeowner has to trust them,” says Jackie Mosher, Dzinly’s COO. “You can throw it on a 2D rendering, but it’s not a true representation of what the project is going to look like. With Dzinly, you don’t have to visualize. All the indecisiveness went away.”
Dzinly not only lets the user see exactly what their home will look like, but they can switch out different colors, different materials, add architectural changes, all with the input of a professional designer guiding the way.
Users begin by uploading a clear image of their project, whether an existing home or a new construction, with detailed notes. “You can add comments and inspirational photos, provide links,” Mosher says. “You can say, ‘I don’t even know what I like,

but I know what I don’t want,’ or ‘I already bought this stone but don’t know what to put with it,’ anything you want.” The project then goes to in-house designers, who send back three different pallet renderings within two business days. You can choose one (or additional ones for a fee) and the designer will render the pallet onto your home in one more day.
From there, the software really shows its stuff. “We built this awesome toggle function that not only showcases the designer’s recommendation but puts the process into the hands of the homeowner,” Mosher says. “They can toggle to add materials, try out colors, and the project never expires. Maybe you like one color, but your husband wants to see it a little darker. You can use the toggle to try a lighter trim, or look at this area in board and batten, this area horizontal — everything is put into a sandbox full of toys, and you can play and toggle as much as you want until you come up with the combination you love. But it’s started off and directed by professional designers.”
Users can chat with their designer, add items to their sandbox, show them Pinterest boards and the designer will track it down. Architectural changes are optional, for a fee — maybe you’re debating whether to add a dormer or a boxed bay window, change the size of a window. The project would first go to an in-house architect and proposed elements would be built onto the rendering.
Once you’ve settled on a winning design, you see that “there’s so much more to this, down to hiring yourself a vetted local architect or contractor to carry out the project,” Mosher says. “Our network is going to be massive. All of our materials and colors are readily available. The project can be shared with anyone, including friends or your own conventional designer. It’s a one-stop shop in every sense of the word.
“Designers, too, can benefit,” she says. “Whether they’re out of San Diego, New York, wherever, it’s an amazing tool for them to promote and excel in their career, expand beyond their local market, which can be difficult to do. We’re creating the largest network of designers nationwide, each going through an in-depth qualification review.”
Although Dzinly began as a passion project on the side of the couple’s many other endeavors, “now it’s a monster that needs to be fed every day,” Mosher says. “We truly build this ourselves, with a full-time tech team. We were involved in every storyboard, every icon, every button, it was all blood sweat and tears — there’s not one thing that we did not purposefully build.”
And it’s far from complete. “Now the train has left the station and it’s picking up speed. There are so many amazing things coming,” she says. “I can’t help but pinch myself, because I know what’s coming, and it’s such an exciting time. I can’t believe we’re here.”
“We built this awesome toggle function that not only showcases the designer’s recommendation, but puts the process into the hands of the homeowner.” — Jackie Mosher

STYLEESTEEM: FASHION AS ARMOR
Sonya Keshwani
Taking matters into her own hands, Sonya decided to channel her creative and fashionable traits into producing her own head coverings. During her recovery periods, she bought fabrics from a fabric shop near her hospital and used her mother’s sewing machine, ultimately creating her own turban collection. She felt herself “getting that voice, power, and confidence back,” finding within her what had previously been lost from cancer. Now, four years later, Sonya is the founder of a successful fashion label, StyleEsteem Wardrobe, designing luxury turbans for “people of all hair journeys.”
At 29 years old, Sonya Keshwani was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after undergoing chemotherapy, she lost her hair. Sonya found that there were little to no hair styling options available that were equally stylish and comfortable. She grew frustrated that no head coverings resonated with her story and her style.
While the brand was started because of Keshwani’s hair loss during chemotherapy, her turbans are designed for anyone, like those with alopecia or hair loss, or anyone who may just be having a bad hair day. Sonya emphasizes that StyleEsteem is “a place where women can find fashionable head coverings for every season and occasion,” making the brand incredibly inclusive for any customer’s personal style or preferences.

With the range of styles across all seasons and occasions, StyleEsteem hosts turbans with SPF 50 protection, whose fabric is embedded with aloe vera microcapsules for extra cooling during the summer, and turbans that fall under knitwear, for the colder days of fall and winter.
Sonya said, “I wanted women to be able to shop for head coverings the same way they shop for clothes.” Her turbans are not intended to be simple add-ons to one’s wardrobe, but rather a piece of it that holds it all together.
Another crucial, defining aspect of StyleEsteem is its history. This spring, Sonya launched the Couture Turban Collection at this year’s New York Luxury Bridal Fashion Week. The collection looks back on the 4000 year history of turbans and the role it has played across many countries, cultures and religions. Sonya highlights her own Indian heritage in many of her turbans, specifically the Indian pagri, a traditional turban for men whose masculine elements she has transformed into headwear for women. Taking inspiration from a range of cultures, time periods, and styles highlights the “globalized, diverse collection of head pieces,” as defined by Sonya, that StyleEsteem provides.
Sonya not only prioritizes the reflection on the history of turbans, but also emphasizes the idea that anyone who wears her headwear today will become part of that history as well: “We hope to continue to evolve that couture collection to include more history. Whether it’s looking backward or looking forwards, it’s something that I think grounds us in who we are.”
In describing her business in three words, Sonya said StyleEsteem is defined by “connection, personal stories, and inner beauty.” It is about the story behind every customer’s hair journey and how wearing a StyleEsteem turban can bring them together. StyleEsteem makes its customers know that they are part of a larger community: “We are a fashion label, but it’s with a purpose of creating community, uplifting others and giving the people who need confidence the most that boost of self esteem, or in this case StyleEsteem.”

THE little BLACK DRESS
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
