Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!

One of the things my father always instilled in us was to have fun and not take life or work too seriously and to always be present. When I was growing up he worked three weekends per month and we always did something fun on his weekends off even if it was just playing catch in the backyard.

A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.

As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:

Greenwich resident Robin Bennett Kanarek’s new book Living Well with a Serious Illness (Johns Hopkins University Press) is the culmination of decades of Robin’s work to advance the field of palliative care following the loss of her son David to leukemia. The book, available on Amazon, illustrates how palliative care can improve quality of life for patients and caregivers. Proceeds will help continue to improve palliative care education and honor David’s short but remarkable life.

She began her career at Bear Stearns where she planned the firm's largest and highest-profile conferences and executive events. Lauren’s corporate experience expanded at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods before she transitioned into the non-profit sector, working as the philanthropy event director at the Humane Society of the United States. Little did she know, later in her career, Lauren would marry these two passions of hers together in the most exquisite way.

Lauren is very excited to announce the next phase of her company that will continue embracing the philosophy of giving back through a new partnership she recently formed with SPCA Westchester, one of the oldest humane societies in the United States and only organization empowered to enforce animal cruelty laws in Westchester County. Every event hosted by Madison Events, now saves ten homeless dogs. Funds and resources are donated to the SPCA Westchester Rescue/Transport/Adopt Program, which provides dogs and puppies with their “ticket to freedom.” The donation covers the cost of the animals’ vaccines, health certificate and transportation to the SPCA where they start the next chapter of their lives on their journey to their forever home. Through the SPCA’s Rescue/Transport/Adopt Program, more than 10,000 lives have been saved to date. The goal is to make a commitment towards ending the suffering of dogs who live in overcrowded, high-risk shelters where they have little to no chance of being adopted.

When Lauren isn't busy planning or volunteering, you may see her around town with her husband and three young children. She loves discovering new restaurant offerings and - you guessed itkeeping a pulse on the latest event design trends!

GL: WHAT DOES LEADERSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

AV: To me, leadership is about inspiration and guidance of those around you to achieve a goal greater beyond what can be accomplished alone. Further, leadership should help bring out the best qualities of each team member. A strong leader must be able to ask the right questions and be willing to listen to others. It also means being willing to take calculated risks and adapting your course along the way to achieve success. In my opinion, leadership must be earned by building up those around you to be successful (even more successful than themselves). I have found that effective leadership requires strong communication skills and a commitment to lead by example. Ultimately, I see it as an opportunity to foster a positive and productive environment where everyone can work together towards shared goals.

GL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO YOUR PROFESSION OR FIELD OF WORK?

AV: Growing up in a medical family, I spent my summer breaks assisting in my father’s medical office and volunteering in hospitals where I was exposed to the importance of healthcare. It inspired me to pursue a healthcare path of my own by becoming a dentist and periodontist. Over the last 10 years, I have pioneered a treatment philosophy combining the principles of biologic medicine, dentistry, and wellness, with the most advanced and

minimally invasive procedures to create the concept of Regenerative BioHealth. Just as I saw in my father’s practice growing up, today I feel privileged to use my unique skills and knowledge to help my patients achieve greater health from their smile to their lifestyle.

GL: WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE NEXT?

AV: I want to establish a first of its kind Regenerative Biohealth center in Fairfield County by bringing together the fields of medicine, dentistry, nutrition, and wellness under one roof and one philosophy. The state-of-the art facility will revolutionize the way people approach health and wellness, using the latest advancements in healthcare to help patients achieve optimal and lasting health. This vision would be a significant step forward in the field of healthcare, and I am proud to be spearheading this exciting new development am excited to empower patients to take charge of their health by focusing on prevention and integrative methods rather than just treating symptoms of disease. This is why I do what I do. I believe the mouth is a gateway to the body and an integral part of health and wellness. By combining a full body approach to health with minimally invasive and regenerative treatments and the best and safest biomaterials, I believe we can start to finally start getting to the root (pun intended) causes of the issues that make us sick, tired, and ailing.

MW: I’m a board-certified urologist and did a fellowship in male infertility and surgery, and male sexual dysfunction. I chose to specialize in these areas because I’m very passionate about helping couples have a child and restoring men to good sexual health. I continue to feel that these areas make a big difference in people’s lives and relationships.

GL: WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT?

MW: We have a team of specialists, comprised of medical practitioners and therapists, that diagnose and treat erectile dysfunction, andropause

(Low T), premature ejaculation, Peyronie’s Disease and male infertility. I also perform the no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy exclusively in this area.

GL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO YOUR PROFESSION OR FIELD OF WORK?

AH: I traveled the world in my mid-twenties and Lived in California and Texas for a while before moving back to New York and ended up following in my father’s footsteps and became a member of the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department and took over my father’s property maintenance and home improvement business after he retired. This began a rewarding 20+ year career in Law Enforcement

and over 40 years of Luxury Property Maintenance and Management. I am still passionate when I meet a new client, I love sharing my knowledge of all things relating to home maintenance. Being in law enforcement shares some similarities with maintaining and managing luxury real estate. They both require specific investigating skills whether determining the cause of a leak in a home or the cause of an accident both require a bit of reconstruction and years of experience to do it correctly and efficiently.

GL: WHAT DOES LEADERSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

AH: Having worked in law enforcement, counter terrorism, and security, and having responded to ground zero after 911 and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina I am no stranger to catastrophe. I have had good leaders and poor leaders. I have role played as an opposition force for Army Green Berets and got my butt kicked by men who were destined for the middle east and terrorist hot beds. I view leadership as a piece of string. If you try and push the string (people) the string will just bunch up and make a mess. However, if you take the string and pull that string (lead from the front) it will make a nice straight line and follow wherever you pull it. People want to be led, not pushed. Another quality a leader should have

is extreme ownership. As the president of Fox Hill Luxury Real Estate Services, I am ultimately responsible for all the success and failure of the company, and I will never blame anyone else, I “own” the responsibility.  My clients rely on me to put the right person for the job in place for the greatest chance of success. If I fail to do that, I am the person who is ultimately responsible, not the person who didn’t do the job right or complete what was asked of them.

GL: WHAT'S THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS?

AH: Well, success is a relative term. For a severe accident victim, success may be learning to walk again. For a wife who has lost a husband, success may be making it through a day without breaking down. I attribute any success I have achieved to the support from my family because success comes with much sacrifice. I recently spent a week in Ohio at a very demanding building performance institute training course. I think constantly learning and bettering yourself will breed success. There is a new restaurant on Market Street, and let me tell you, it’s a must-visit if you live in or are visiting Charleston. The Latin and South American flared cocktail bar boasts a cultivated menu and specialty drink list, that is sure to please even the harshest critic.

I had the pleasure of visiting the adorable spot while down south this past February.

We dined on: Yellowfin Tuna Poke, Snapper Ceviche, Oysters, Sweet Plantains, Gingerline Smash Burger, Street Tacos (Chicken Tinga, Spicy Chorizo, Baja Shrimp), Shrimp & Grits, Mahi Mahi, Cubano and the Roasted Beat Salad. I recommend all of them.

Intrigued by the palate-pleasing menu and the refreshing ambiance, I reached out to the Gingerline, and had a wonderful chat with Gingerline’s General Manager, Maureen Samu to get a little more insight on the restaurant and what’s to come:

BEING ON MARKET STREET, DO YOU MAINLY CATER TO TOURISTS, OR HAVE YOU CULTIVATED A LOCAL FOLLOWING/CLIENTELE AS WELL?

IN THE PAST YEAR AND A HALF, WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST MILESTONE(S) FOR GINGERLINE?

I would say the start of the spring season has been our biggest milestone as we have been able to open for lunch, brunch and dinner and within the next few weeks will be running a seven-day operation.

WHO DESIGNED THE TROPICAL AESTHETIC?

IT’S VIBRANT, FRESH AND SIMPLY DARLING. Jenny Keenan did an amazing job designing the ambiance of Gingerline.

WHAT INSPIRED THE LATIN & SOUTH AMERICAN FLARE ON THE CUISINE?

My background in hospitality is greatly influenced by Latin Caribbean and South American cuisine. When moving to Charleston to open Gingerline I felt that the flavors paired well with design and branding, and I really believed the combination of local ingredients would bring something unique to Charleston.

ARE THERE ANY NEW MENU ITEMS BEING ADDED FOR SUMMER 2023?

Regarding the menu, we aspire to change seasonally; however, we will be using specials and events to highlight new items in our first summer season, moving to a menu change come fall 2023.

WHAT IS THE CHEF’S FAVORITE DISH OR RECIPE? OUR WAITER LET US TRY SOME BANANA KETCHUP WHILE VISITING IN FEBRUARY, AND WE WERE IMPRESSED! ADDITIONALLY, ALL THE DISHES WE TRIED WERE FANTASTIC.

Honestly, the Banana ketchup is one of Chef’s favorite sauces in the kitchen, along with our shrimp and grits, it really incorporates tropical notes with a lot of Southern love.

AS FAR AS YOUR COASTAL-INSPIRED COCKTAILS GO, CAN DINERS EXPECT TO HAVE A FRESH SIGNATURE COCKTAIL EACH SEASON, BEING A COCKTAIL BAR AND ALL? IF SO, WHAT’S TO COME FOR SUMMER 2023?

Our menu in whole will change with our food menu come Fall, but we will have some fun additions for both spring and summer.

Inspired by Spanish heritage and committed to thoughtful craftsmanship, BSPK just might be your new wardrobe builder go-to. Oh, and the best part? It's completely custom — the client is the designer.

Founded by passionate entrepreneur Federico Martin, BSPK fills a need for clients searching for that bespoke, intimate shopping experience that can’t be found just anywhere. His eye for style and obvious love for his work was both inspiring and motivating to witness.

“We are filling the gap in the custom garments in Connecticut by offering customers the biggest selection of luxury Italian and English fabric brands you can find,” Federico explained. “This includes ZEGNA, DRAGO, CACCIOPPOLI, LORO PIANA, CERRUTI, SCABAL, and ARISTON,” which is just for suits, jackets, and trousers — BSPK also offers custom jeans produced in Italy by “the best denim factory in the world,” as well as custom shirts and custom handmade shoes from Spain.

"After Covid, my head was spinning with what I should do next," Federico said. "I discovered the lack of tailors in

the area and decided to do BSPK. I had the opportunity to complete the business with shirting and suits and I took it."

The specialness of BSPK, Federico illustrates, lies in the offering of custom shoes, sneakers, and jeans that can complete a more casual look for men, proving that custom doesn’t need to mean formal — or expensive.

While visiting him at his Atelier, Federico gave me the full Made To Measure experience spreading out fabric swatches, different colored thread, buttons, and luxury catalogs made exclusively for the BSPK brand for me to thumb through.

Put simply, BSPK provides you with the best materials in the world to create your perfect pieces. From classic suiting to vibrant printed shirts to samples of cottons, wools and silks, it was like getting lost in Willy Wonka’s factory — if Willy Wonka had a fashion factory.

THE CUSTOM DESIGN PROCESS

Federico explains he is constantly upgrading BSPK’s tools to deliver the best possible products to clients. “Thinking out of the box and creativity is in our DNA,” he says. Utilizing a powerful 3-D design platform, the client is able to customize every aspect of their shoe, jean, or shirt, from fabric and color to the finer details in collars, cuffs and buttons.

After the design is complete — with the help of Federico’s Made To Measure system applied at the Atelier — each pair of shoes or shirt designed is individually produced by some of the world’s most experienced craftsman, creating a perfect blend of time-honored artistry, modern design, and personal taste.

“Our custom shoes are handcrafted to the client’s exact specifications in our factory in Spain,” Federico says. “The same facility that produces footwear for some of the largest international luxury brands today.”

To paint a picture, these premier Spanish cobblers are specially trained in “mastering the complex construction and finishing of more than 75 shoe styles,” from classic oxfords to contemporary cupsole sneakers.

To have a brand that hits the trifecta of quality craftsmanship, custom design, and affordability is impressive to say the least, not to mention nearly unheard of.

While any brand can throw around buzzwords like "high quality," "luxury" and "sustainability" when describing its products and promises, not every brand can provide such desirable characteristics. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and I can assure you BSPK delivers.

HOW IT WORKS

First, you book an appointment. This can be done at the BSPK Atelier or the client’s home or office. Next comes the fun part, the design. Here, Federico helps clients design their garments exactly how they want them, with unlimited design and customization options at their fingertips to ensure uniqueness.

Then comes the measurements. A unique pattern is created for each client based on their body’s measurements. This pattern will then adapt to the client’s body, fitting to the client’s desire.

Finally, a 30-minute “final fitting” will be scheduled where the client tries their new garments on. From there, Federico will assess the fit to make sure everything is just right.

If it's jeans we're talking about, Federico will measure you based on his simple made to measure system. First, the customer tries on a sample pair of jeans at the BSPK Atelier. “The jeans which feel the best will function as the foundation,” Federico said. Next, the customer selects the denim of their choice, including the style, wash, buttons, and stitching.

From silver or yellow lacquered buttons to the shape of the backpocket to the pony hair or suede patch on the waistband, the customer is able to completely customize their jeans. Additional design choices range from your classic blue jean denim to black jeans to khaki pants and beyond.

“Our goal is to help clients be the best version of themselves,” Federico concluded. “We will help every client look stylish and elegant according to their desires and tastes. Style, whatever that means to you, is important because it is your own. It makes you feel at your best, completely comfortable with yourself, without the necessity of following trends.”
