LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Local

February 2023 PUBLISHER

Laura Sabia | laura.sabia@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Kristin Burnell | kristin.burnell@citylifestyle.com

I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Aux Delices and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Val’s and some cheese from Greenwich Cheese Shop and indulge on a movie night in. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Don’t forget to scan the barcode in the magazine and vote for your favorite local businesses in our 2023 local love awards! Happy February!

THE TRADEMARKED ST YLING TECHNIQUE IS B R I N G I N G H E A LT H Y H A I R TO N E W L E N G T H S

Modern. Sleek. Revolutionary. Meticulous. These are just a few words that describe Paulo Lanfredi and the beauty empire he is creating. A staple in the Greenwich community, Lanfredi is expanding with new business ventures beyond the town where he opened his first salon nearly five years ago. He has his eyes set on becoming an international brand and that dream is already becoming a reality with the trademark of his Lanfredi Signature Haircut™ in 170 countries earlier this year. He’s also developing a new haircare product line, introducing new concepts, such as CAVE for the modern gentleman, and lending a hand in Brazil to areas that support the planet. An ambitious entrepreneur with his pulse on what’s hot and trendy, the mission for his brand is the same across all platforms – to find solutions that are beneficial to humanity. By making positive and impactful changes through new techniques and cutting-edge technology, Lanfredi is helping clients look and feel confident in a sustainable way. Lanfredi started his career in physical therapy, which gifts him the incredible ability to approach the art of cutting and styling hair from a completely different point of view than others. He prides himself in having eyes in areas that people don’t generally think twice about, like the simple chore of going to a salon and getting a haircut. In fact, it’s relatively been the same experience for centuries where you come in for a trim, chop or new trendy do. Lanfredi is reinventing this through an innovative hair care technique to treat damaged, thinning, and over-processed hair – it essentially deconstructs the way we

are all used to customarily getting a haircut. The revolutionary technique removes damaged hair from the inside out by eliminating split ends at each growth phase. This process dramatically enhances hair health and appearance over time. It typically takes several visits to achieve the healthier-looking hair we all want, but trust me, it’s worth the investment with Lanfredi, particularly coming off several years where we have all felt the various stressors of a pandemic and overscheduled lives, which can lead to hair loss. There is nothing else on the market that can achieve these results, which is why the next phase Lanfredi is working towards is developing a curriculum, a website and videos where others – located both here and overseas – can get certified in this patented technique. The goal is to spread the knowledge and education of the Lanfredi Signature Haircut to help your hair reach its full potential and for clients to leave feeling confident and sexy in a look that is uniquely theirs. Once the dead ends have been removed and a strong foundation for hair health has been established, the next step is maintenance with quality products that complement the Lanfredi Signature Haircut. Lanfredi is currently developing a handful of key organic haircare products for men and women with top-of-the-line technology to do just that. Long gone are the days of overcrowded cabinets of hair care products that we don’t entirely know what they do for us. The new solution is a modernized cutting technique followed by products that will actually efficiently do what they describe. Formulating new beauty techniques isn’t all Lanfredi is up to. He is also the owner of Paulo Lanfredi, a luxurious, full-service salon at 401 Greenwich Avenue with a team of highly trained artists who strive to create beautifully structured hair through a customized approach. And his newest project that recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, CAVE, a premiere gentleman’s salon and spa – once again proving that what’s old can be new again. A male-forward experience modeled after the

ultimate “man cave” with haircuts, coloring, shaving, waxing, bread trimming and most importantly, the opportunity to enjoy a whiskey or scotch in a comfortable, sophisticated environment. Membership options and perks will be made available again soon following the upgrade of a new software system. business in town to accept cryptocurrency, another nod and proof that his company is truly an evolving brand that incorporates a great deal of tech into its everyday practices. The future is certainly looking bright for Lanfredi and his growing team. Being a native of Brazil, he is energized by the ability to utilize the natural resources of the country and will soon be part of a new movement to protect and support those properties. Lanfredi is also a supporter of many local non-profit organizations that give back to the community in Brazil, including children with disabilities, and he annually donates school supplies to deserving classrooms. This is just the beginning for an incredibly talented individual who has a knack for making his clients feel at ease and as if they can trust him with one of the most important accessories on their bodies – their hair.

INTEGRATE FUNCTIONAL FITNESS INTO YOUR LIFE DESIGNING A ROUTINE TAILORED TO YOUR LIFE AND NEEDS GL: DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO INCORPORATE WORKING OUT AFTER THE HOLIDAY SEASON? DN: The most important thing to remember is the rear-view mirror is small but the front windshield is large. We can use this to not beat ourselves up about what we have not done in the past but rather look ahead with optimism that today is a new day, and with that, I'm going to begin a new chapter in my life. Small steps every day lead to consistent and sustained changes. I recommend writing down your long-term goals, but each month set smaller goals that are achievable and begin. Taking photos of your starting fitness body, and each month afterward are good motivators to continue.

Imagine reaching your fitness goals with the help of fun, functional fitness tips! Our goal is to look and feel our very best this year. Goodbye to sluggish mornings after one too many wines. Peak 360, a privately-owned gym in Greenwich, Connecticut, CEO Celebrity Trainer Dominic Novak, specializes in preparing customized programs and private training that can help you attain all your fitness goals. This year is all about functioning at your very best!

GL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OWN A GYM? DN: Thirty-five years ago, in 1987, I started working as a personal trainer in a few gyms in Greenwich, Port Chester,

“In most cases, it is a choice that a person makes. The discipline created by training will build confidence in life.” ARTICLE BY DANIELLE BONILLA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KYLE MORTON

and going to clients’ homes. After 6 years of doing this, I felt the desire and passion to own a center of my own so with that birthed Peak Physique, Inc in 1993. A 10,000-square-foot private training center in Greenwich. In 2016, Dana, my wife and I, re-branded, changed our name to Peak 360 Greenwich and moved locations. What makes us unique is that we have held to our core principles and beliefs, that each body is unique and different; every person has stress and emotions that must be factored in and everyone has a lifestyle that they are leading.

GL: WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF FUNCTIONAL FITNESS AND HOW CAN IT BE ATTAINED? DN: I equate functional fitness to the lifestyle of the individual. Meaning if we are training a runner, functional fitness means that we need to provide that client with rotational exercises and balance exercises keeping in mind the placement of the feet

upon landing so that he or she can be proficient at running. Functionally fit means that each person is active in their movements with the correct alignment and posture to execute each move correctly.

GL: IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRAINING MEN AND WOMEN, OR DO YOU FIND THAT BOTH GENDERS CAN TRAIN IN THE SAME FASHION? DN: The hormones play a factor, but I refer back to each person’s uniqueness and the way that we train them is based upon needs, wants, goals and lifestyle. Assessing this allows us to plan a program. In most cases, not all, I tend to give women higher repetitions on each exercise, and my exercise selection will favor more shaping the muscle worked. Men in most cases, not all, I tend to give them broad repetition ranges and more building muscle exercises. Having said that it comes down to what each person wants and needs.

Guiding Us To Our Canine Companions

ARTICLE BY COREY KEEHAN

Our canine companions provide unconditional love and loyalty. They create a positive impact on our health and well-being. They keep us physically active, reduce stress levels, and provide endless joy, friendship and happiness. If you are committed to adding a companion to your life, there may be some things to keep in mind. This is where Elizabeth Menegon saw a problem and decided to do something about it. Elizabeth, a Greenwich native, has developed a concept to help individuals find their ideal canine companion. Through her app, Hands2Paws, it matches you to a breed most suited for your lifestyle. It also guides you to a responsible breeder or available rescue resource.

GL: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THIS CONCEPT? EM: After one day out, I noticed the same dog breed in three different places and got back to my apartment and thought, do people realize their dogs may not be living in the right environment? There are over 200 breeds of dogs and 40% of people buy a dog that their friend has or that their neighbor has. After doing some research I discovered there was no resource out there that would connect people to finding a dog that’s right for them.

GL: WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH DIFFERENT? EM: There is no app available to consumers and this app is a vehicle to get people to the right dog. It’s free and asks questions to match the breed based on a person’s profile. Questions like shedding, dogs' stature, energy level, and other people or pets that are in the household. It takes the guesswork out by using an algorithm to match users with breeds based on their answers. It also connects you to an association.

GL: CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT HOW THE APP CONNECTS YOU TO BREEDERS/ RESCUE SHELTERS? EM: The app will connect the user to breed-specific associations. For example, Beagles have the Beagle Club of America. St. Bernard’s has the St. Bernard Association of America. You will then go right to the breed-specific website to get further information and dog show results. Puppies are born, don’t meet the show dog standard and are given DQ (disqualified) status. My Italian Greyhound, Vanessa was 7 lbs. and disqualified because she didn’t meet the standard. The app also connects you to an adoptable dog within 200 miles of your location. This business is a conduit for people to find an ethical breeder or rescue.

GL: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO FIND A DOG THAT IS RIGHT FOR THEM? EM: Every dog has a purpose and when you get a dog living in an environment in which nature did not

Elizabeth Menegon Elizabeth Menegon is a 4th generation Greenwich native who owns a company called SugarSkinn. She created Hands2Paws as a way to educate people.

intend people wonder, what’s wrong with my dog? It’s about educating people. If it’s a Corgi living in an apartment in the city, it won’t be suitable because they are herding dogs. If it’s a Beagle puppy living in an apartment you will get thrown out because they howl and bark. You do a disservice to the animal if you can’t let the animal do what they are meant to do.

GL: WHAT ELSE IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO KNOW? EM: Don’t buy a breed that someone else has. That breed may not work for one person’s lifestyle but may work for another person. Be cautious of puppy mills. Pennsylvania, Missouri, Iowa and New York State have many puppy mills. Also, go check out an event put on by the American Kennel Club called Meet the Breeds. It’s the best thing. Reach out to people who own the breeds and see the breed in person. FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ G R E E N W I C H

Incorporating in-season produce is beneficial for a host of reasons. When produce is in-season, it is more likely the product is from a local source, meaning it took less time for the produce to make its way to your kitchen, often resulting in a lower cost. Additionally, in-season produce, compared to out-of-season produce, has a higher nutrient density, which means there is a higher amount of nutrients per calorie. Selecting in-season produce allows diversity in the diet. Just as diversifying the diet from day to day is important to establish a healthy gut-microbiome (the good bacteria); diversifying the diet from season to season can optimize nutrient intake. Optimization of nutrient intake further supports the healthy bacteria to flourish, while allowing for a change in the flavors and taste we experience in meals. Incorporating in-season produce mitigates mundane meals, sparking new ideas with different, in-season ingredients. And most importantly, the increased quality of in-season produce tastes better!

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY ALT PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARA ALWILL

Understanding healthy love exists when you’re able to attract it Cara Alwill is a bestselling author, life coach, and speaker who encourages women to celebrate themselves and make their happiness a priority, always. The standout entrepreneur runs the popular blog, The Champagne Diet, and hosts a top-rated podcast, Style Your Mind, for success-driven women touted by media outlets including Forbes and Oprah Daily, where she speaks directly to women looking to build amazing lives and careers. Finding herself newly single after being in a relationship for 11 years, Cara has been researching what healthy relationships are made of, sharing her expertise with her large following. “I went through a very amicable divorce recently,” Cara said. “My ex-husband and I are best friends, and I genuinely want the best for him. If you choose to see the good from your experiences, you can learn to grow a different part of yourself, which is what I’m focusing on teaching my clients right now.” After reading the acclaimed self-improvement book, "The Secret," Cara understood she had the power to transform her own life, realizing she wanted to help women like her succeed. This led to her pursuit of becoming a professionally certified life coach, holding various accreditation degrees within the life coaching and wellness spaces, which she has obtained now for over a decade. For anyone feeling stuck (in their careers or personal lives), she advises her audience to create a vision for the life they want, down to how you spend your days, by utilizing her confidence-building tactics. “Write about it from a place of raw honesty — without your parents’ voices or your husbands’,” she says. “The second thing to do is find an empowering person to follow — someone you really admire who nourishes your soul. Finally, commit to one small goal every single day, like creating a morning mantra.”

SAVING YOU MONEY ON YOUR LUXURY PROPERT Y MAINTENANCE SERVICES When it comes to relationships, she emphasizes that cultivating healthy relationships is a two-way street, as oftentimes we are quick to point fingers at our partners without first looking at ourselves. “If you want peace and happiness in your relationship, are you showing up that way?” She challenges. “Healthy love does exist. But you have to first become who you want to attract.” She continued, “If you’re looking for a partner who is loving, spiritual, and works out, you better make sure you’re doing that as well. You have to be clear about what you want, and also be mindful of how you speak about relationships to your friends and colleagues.” She introduces the concept of knowing what your core values are in a relationship, an exercise typically reserved for branding and business building, by encouraging her clients to write their ideal vision of a relationship down on paper. Giving a personal example that one of her core values is freedom, Cara affirms she “needs a relationship that gives her that freedom.” “As therapists and coaches, we’re trained to not be biased,” she declares. “Not judging yourself is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself as a human. This is important for women, especially.” As for Valentine’s Day, Cara believes in celebrating love in any way, not just the traditional “Treat your significant other” by taking them out to dinner — whether that’s spending time with your nephew, your girlfriends, or even taking the day to celebrate yourself. Cara is currently working on a dating and relationship book (her 10th book, stay tuned), as well as creating more programs for women to fall more in love with their lives. MIRROR WORK FOR SELF-LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE

50

S ELF CA R E | PR OFESSIONAL S E RVI CE S

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Everyone knows this line from Snow White. The Queen wanted to be the fairest. When she wasn’t, she poisoned beautiful Snow White. Most of us do not believe ourselves to be the fairest, but quite the opposite. As February is widely known as the month of love, let’s focus on self-love. Often people, especially parents, tend to give a lot to their partners and their children and less to themselves. Sometimes it is challenging for us to silence the inner critic that speaks harshly to ourselves in a way we would never speak to a loved friend or family member. This is where mirror work can help. Many people have a complicated relationship with the mirror. We don’t always like to look at our reflections. We may find it confronting. Taylor Swift even sings about it in her song Antihero: “I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror.” Why is it so difficult for some of us to gaze with love–or affection–into the mirror? Mirror work, a term coined by transformational teacher and self-love expert Louise Hay,

founder of Hay House Publishing, and the author of You Can Heal Your Life and Mirror Work: 21 Days to Heal Your Life, is the practice of looking at yourself in the mirror and saying nice things to yourself. You can start with something simple. “I like myself. I am doing the best I can today.” Or even, “Hey sweetie! You look great!” One of my favorites is, “I love, accept, and forgive myself fully and completely.” Mirror work combines well with affirmations, which are positive phrases said in the present tense as if they are already true. The practice of saying affirmations combined with mirror work can increase the benefits of both practices. The objective of mirror work is to help people silence their inner critic and believe the positive words they are telling themselves while looking at themselves in the mirror. Mirror work can help with self-esteem issues and can achieve results such as changing a negative body image to a more positive one. Hay developed the practice to increase self-compassion and self-love as part of the daily activities detailed in her 1984 book You Can Heal Your Life. Although it can be confronting and challenging, it is important to practice mirror work regularly to reap the benefits. Set a daily goal of saying affirmations while looking at your reflection in the mirror and seeing how it makes you feel. Start with two minutes a day and work up to five. As a yoga teacher, I have included mirror work in my classes with clients. Often the first experience with the exercise is somewhat uncomfortable, but with practice, it becomes more natural. When resistance comes up, ask yourself what you are feeling, allow the emotion to be present, and then release it. It may be rooted in a past experience and just needs to be acknowledged and felt before you can let it go.

HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE GUIDELINES FOR HOW TO CREATE A MIRROR WORK PRACTICE: 1. Make sure you will be alone and uninterrupted so you can let your guard down and allow emotions to surface 2. Try to do it for a set amount of time, such as five minutes every day 3. Allow yourself to feel and process whatever emotions show up 4. Keep a journal to record your feelings, reactions, and experiences 5. Start with less confronting or difficult phrases, and as you become comfortable increase the intensity. Mirror work can be used in tandem with innerchild work because many of the negative limiting beliefs that play in our minds are the result of something we were told as a child that is not true about us or our life. If something negative comes up during mirror work, we can challenge it and write about the feelings in the journal, thus freeing us from that limiting belief. Inner child work is an approach to recognizing and healing childhood trauma. We all experience traumas as children which affect the way we experience the world. As adults, we can reconnect with the child we once were, in order to heal. Mirror work is one way to help facilitate that process, in addition to talk therapy, meditation exercises, and setting healthy boundaries. Here are some ideas for affirmations to use with our mirror work. I am strong. I am capable. I can do this. I believe in myself. I know my worth. I can do hard things. My life is abundant. I am happy and healthy in mind, body, and spirit. I believe in myself. I am kind and compassionate. I deserve love and abundance. I am doing my best. I am smart. I am brave. I am powerful. In the words of Hay, “Doing mirror work is one of the most loving gifts you can give yourself.”

The resort will debut a multi-million dollar, top-to-bottom restoration and renovation in May 2023. To our surprise, our sweet pup, Harvey also had a welcome box filled with a bed, toys and treats for him to feel at home. As much as Harvey loved his travel bed, my husband and I were overjoyed with the fluffy linens and loads of pillows that made up the cozy hotel bedding. One of the best parts of staying at the White Elephant is that while it’s central to everywhere in town, yet it’s also private enough that you don’t have to worry about the hustle and bustle of the ferry traffic in the center of town. The property offers you almost everything you could need without leaving the resort. We can all agree that there is so much Nantucket magic to explore in its adult playground. With a quick walk, bike or jog you can get to the Galley or Jetties beach and hang out with the locals. You'll see the most beautiful sunsets at Galley and eat an absolutely delicious meal, but if you get stuck on the waitlist for a room and have to wait until fall, you can at least catch the end-of-year celebration at Jetties beach. Other local faves are lemon press, the beach, shopping on Main Street and concerts at the box. Don’t forget to enjoy a spectacular dinner off-property. van transportation. Topper's offers an exquisite wine list and oysters so fresh because they came from the Ocean you are overlooking while enjoying. It's rated the best overall restaurant on Nantucket Island and couldn't be more well deserved. While it’s easy to hop a quick flight on Tradewinds or Cape Air, if you want to have a car on the island, ferries typically sell out by the end of February. If you happen to not be able to land a spot on the car ferry, make sure you find yourself in the lobby at 9 am to hope to take advantage of the White Elephant x BMW partnership. Guests can check out one of the X5 or 7 series cars for a few hours. It is on a firstcome, first-served basis and you can sign up with the front desk upon check-in to win the car for the day. On your way to the airport or ferry ride home.... Your immediate thought is how do I plan my next trip back? Truly, there is always another ferry so you could just stay, but the truth is just like when we were kids, we had to leave at the playground when it got dark. We would recommend planning your trip back for Stroll. There is nothing more fun than the Nantucket magic aligning with Christmas magic when Santa arrives on Main Street. For that trip, don't forget your ugly sweater and get your room early since they sell out before summer ends!

Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, I knew from a young age that I wanted to have my own business. I never subscribed to just one path, I always felt like I could be ‘many things’, all at once. While building what would become Camille & Co, I took on multiple day jobs, went back to school, got married, and helped my husband open a restaurant. Needless to say, I thrive on chaos.

GL: WHY DID YOU START YOUR COMPANY? FC: I started Camille & Co in 2021 as a fresh approach to my existing background in textiles and design. I have spent the past 10 years traveling to India and establishing connections with multi-generational artisan communities, specifically with block printers and handloom weavers. It is a country of sharp contrasts, beauty, grit, and extraordinary history that can be seen and felt everywhere. Whether it’s

the landscape, the architecture, or the spirit of its people, the country has always been a source of inspiration for me.

GL: TELL US HOW YOU CAME UP WITH THE NAME FOR THE BRAND. FC: Camille & Company is named after my late grandmother, Camille D’Alessandro. She was the epitome of chic, and I wanted my brand to reflect timeless and effortless style. I also loved the idea of creating a sense of heritage and keeping the generational spirit alive, much like the communities of artisans I partner with.

GL: WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS UNIQUE? FC: We are dedicated to true sustainability. All of our textiles are sourced by me personally. I seek out naturally dyed waste fabric that would otherwise end up in a landfill or burned. When we create new textiles, we use vegetable dyes and traditional dying methods, which involve zero toxic chemicals and rely on natural resources like the sun, wind, and rain to aid in the process. The end product is a completely unique and one-of-a-kind item that you won’t

find anywhere else. I source rare fabrics, many of our products are made in extremely small quantities. Next year, I’ll be partnering with a new community of artisans that I’m particularly excited about. As an all-women team, they are collecting waste fabric, breaking it down, and creating new yarn that is then spun onto spools, and eventually used on their handlooms to create new textile blends. I travel to India once a year, not just because I love to visit, but because I visit and meet with everyone on our production team. From our block printers in the desert villages of Rajasthan, to our sewing team in Bangalore, to our handloom weavers in Maheshwar on the Narmada River.

GL: HOW DO YOU BALANCE MOM LIFE AND YOUR BUSINESS? FC: Being a new mom, I feel truly blessed to be able to work from home and have flexibility around my work schedule. It has allowed me to do my job while also being fully present in these early days of childhood. Having my meetings late at night actually works to my advantage now!

GL: WHAT'S NEXT FOR CAMILLE AND CO? FC: In 2023, we will be expanding in all directions. I am most excited about our new home collections. We will expand into bedding, quilts, and cushions. We will also be creating more clothing collections, including lots of great effortless dresses for the summertime. @shopcamille.co shopcamilleandcompany.com
