Chunky knitwear continues to be big, and so does oversized outer wear, such as bombers, blazers, and wrap coats all in larger, looser silhou ettes. I also like to invest in one key, iconic piece each season. This year, I would recommend a classic trench coat or a trench-coat inspired piece. Look for cropped swing coats, vests, dresses and skirts all with double-breasted button detailing and in classic trench coat fabrics, such as cotton twill. A few of the biggest trends that I am seeing for fall are tuxedo blazers (partic ularly a Le Smoking one because it’s chic, powerful and sophisticated), headto-toe denim and faux fur. I’ve also noticed lots of shimmering pretty details, such as floral appliqués and sequins. The return of the classic LBD (little black dress) and power suits, which are always perfect staples to really make a state ment, are back as well.

Trends come and go, so I try not to spend too much time focused on them, but there are certainly particular motifs and prints I gravitate towards. I have a hard time saying no to stripes, florals on everything, and bows. I’ve been seeing bows on the runway for fall, which makes me really excited. My must-have item is a smartly tailored blazer, like Veronica Beard’s Miller Dickey Blazer. I’ll throw it over a nice t-shirt and jeans for a girls’ lunch or jazz up a dress for a last-minute date with my husband. Extend the life of your summer nap dresses by taking a page out of Diane Keaton’s book and layering with a turtleneck or chunky cardigan. Personally, I don’t think the coastal grandmother trend is going away any time soon! I also see big tote bags making a comeback this fall and I’m here for it! We all know Greenwich has so many amazing upscale consignment shops (I LOVE Consigned Designs!), so check out those first to source your new bag for fall sustainably.

“REMEMBER, YOU DON'T NEED TO WARDROBE’ OVERNIGHT -

What are you gravitating towards this fall? I tend to gravi tate towards classic, timeless pieces that look effortless as opposed to what’s trendy.  I think true style is knowing what looks and feels best on your individual body. Describe your personal style. Classic with a twist.  Favorite store in Greenwich to shop? I love Frame for denim, Jenni Kayne for knits and Roberta Roller Rabbit for resort wear.

CREATE THE ‘PERFECT FALL

BRITTNI What are you gravitating towards this fall? I like big boots and I cannot lie. I will definitely be investing in a classic trench with a twist which was another huge runway trend, and another pair of wide-leg jeans to wear with my band tees and new trench. Describe your personal style. Bohemian luxe with a little edge. Favorite store in Greenwich to shop? Saks is my favorite hands down (hi Karolyn and Marla!). I also love Great Stuff for elevated basics.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | STYLE + BEAUTY HELEN

Describe your personal style. Classic, New England Coastal. I think these days people might categorize me as "coastal grandmother," but I've always been like this!

What are you gravitating towards this fall? I always tend to gravitate towards trends that easily incorporate pieces I already own. For instance, I gravitate towards neutrals so I'm looking forward to planning lots of monochromatic caramel and sandy tone looks.

Favorite store in Greenwich to shop? Great Stuff and Veronica Beard! MIHAELA What are you gravitating towards this fall? A sharply tailored blazer and a versatile leather jacket that top off any outfit for that effortless polished look. Describe your personal style. My style is eclectic, daring fem inine, and effortless.

CHANEL

Describe your personal style. Traditional and feminine. I've always admired the effortless nature of style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Kate Middleton is also someone I look to for inspiration in our modern age.

Favorite store in Greenwich to shop? After moving from NYC, I thought I’d miss the shopping experience the city offers, but Greenwich Avenue has an incredible roster of stores! Veronica Beard is lovely for tailored feminine pieces, and J.Crew always has the essentials.

Favorite store in Greenwich to shop? I love Intermix for the newest trends and Consigned Designs for high-end pre-owned pieces.

What are you gravitating towards this fall? Once the weather drops, I typically center my look around a great fitting pair of jeans, a cashmere sweater (I really like J.Crew and Aqua from Bloomies), and suede tall boots, that I can rotate and mix-and-match. Each season, I allow myself to invest in one high-value statement item, like a classic pair of Stuart Weitzman boots.

CB: In rescue, every day is different, and you always need to be prepared for curve balls! For the most part, I am overseeing and managing all the different aspects of Adopt-A-Dog on a daily basis; everything from actually rescuing the dogs, our adoptions and foster programs, making sure everything at the physical shelter is run ning smoothly, employee management, vet visits.

ADOPT-A-DOG

GL: HOW LONG HAS PUTTIN’ ON THE DOG BEEN GOING ON?  CB: This will be our 35th year doing Puttin’ On The Dog which is amazing. We missed one year due to Covid, but 2021 was a huge success.

39| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/GREENWICHSEPTEMBER 2022

CB: Hands down, it’s seeing the dogs go to their forever homes! These dogs are coming from shelters where they are about to be euthanized, or situations where they have been abused and neglected. Some of the dogs at Adopt-A-Dog had been here for 5-8 years before I got them placed. Seeing these dogs leave with their foster and forever families makes it all worth it. Even on the stressful days when we rescue people feel like we can never make a dent, seeing a dog go home always gives me the motivation to keep going.

CB: The main goals are to raise community awareness, showcase dogs and cats for adoption and fundraise to help continue our mission at Adopt A Dog! The event can truly be enjoyed by anyone! We have great food, great vendors, lots of adorable adoptables, kids activ ities, music, and lots of fun for everyone!  Photography by Alina NancyPhotographyLeonovabyElBouhali

I learned of Adopt-A-Dog many years ago when I first started my own rescue. They were one of the few shelters in the local area and I was happy to learn there was an organization saving dogs so close to home. I was asked to come in as the executive director in March of 2021, as Adopt-A-Dog was without one at the time and had a shelter full of long-term resident dogs. It was my mission to get these dogs placement, as I don’t believe shelters are a long-term solution for rescued dogs.

Bespoke Designs is based out of Westport and offers a bespoke pro cess for discovering your tabletop style. This includes a lifestyle and color consultation, initial tabletop design, product selection, and product sourcing as needed. Bespoke Designs also provides a look book presentation that brings each of the disparate parts together, which will help you visualize how the items will look in your home.

As the crisp Autumn weather rolls in during this month of September, Bespoke Designs recommends bringing warmer tones indoors as the weather cools. Lebowitz suggests metallics, earthenware, softer napkins, hurricanes, pillar and cone candles. She says pieces that can be dressed up or down, that feel easy, and that is easy to take care of are some of the things that their clients have been looking for as we move into the fall. Artisinal ceramics from Portugal and Italy are very hot for them this season.

Lebowitz shares her best design advice, “Don’t wait to use the things you love. Find ways to bring the beauty of special pieces into your every day. Use your grandmother’s silver platter to serve up grilled corn. Mix more contemporary pieces like resin platters in with your classic stainless steel or wooden serving bowlsdon’t be afraid of juxtaposition.” She also suggests to mix metals, combining colors in unexpected ways and allowing your accent pieces to do the work of pulling the overall look together.

“A thoughtfully set table is a delight for all, and the great news is that with all the amazing artisans at work in the world today, creating something that feels unique to your home is more achievable now than it has ever been,” explained Lebowitz.

We asked Paperpreneur, Shari Lebowitz, to explain why tabletops are important for those who might not be familiar with the design process and she said, “Tabletop is all about how we gather for meals in our homes. Your tabletop style should reflect the mood of your home and should speak to how you like to Whetherentertain.”formal, casual, some combination of both, or even if your entertaining style vacillates with each occasion, season, or home, thinking about your tabletop as a continuation of the rest of your home’s design, helps the team at Bespoke Designs pull inspiration from the larger whole, creating a tabletop look that feels thoughtful and cohesive. No matter the style of your home or your preference, they focus on little items throughout your home that will help them begin the process of designing your overall tabletop look. Their mission is to design a tabletop to be a reflection and a representation of you. Bespoke Designs combines color, pattern, and texture as they bring the linens, dinnerware, glassware, serving pieces, and tabletop accessories together for a look that feels both “wow” and affirming every time you sit down to enjoy a meal.

Then I heard about streaming elliptical workouts on Club Sweat Digital. As you probably know, ellipti cals are a gym staple and excellent for cardio endur ance and burning calories, which is why they’re the most common household exercise machines (myself included). This digital application breaks the mold and allows you to use what you most likely already have and offers a variety of options both on and off the machine, for maximum effectiveness.   Club Sweat works the elliptical to the max - fast, slow, bounces, bounce down - with great music. The instructor (how they talk through these workouts, I’ll never know) takes you through on-machine weight lifts and sprints to break up the work-out and powers you up for the next leg of the class. No matter your fitness level, their world-class instructor’s guide and encourage you and offer modifications to help you reach your goals. Whether climbing hills or taking on Tabata scares or excites you, there is a workout style for every fitness level. Their classes kick up the routine and make the ellipsis full of possibilities. Strength training with weights tones your upper body while your legs build muscle. HIIT - high interval training - keeps your heart racing so your calorie burn continues long after your workout is over: up to 400 calories in 30 minutes! The effectiveness of the elliptical, the workout machine that has been at the forefront of fitness for decades, is unmatched. Ellipticals are comfortable (no getting used to a seat!), safe, and super effective.

The landscape of self-care has changed dramatically over the years.  What was once personal and private is now curated on our social media timelines.  I love fitness classes. I need the energy of an instructor to wring every last frisson of energy from my body and leave me feeling absolutely amazing for the rest of theButday. a few things resulted from the pandemic. Fitness classes waned, I bought a trendy bike and spin-classed my way to never wanting to spin again. I walked my dog until his eyes said “I still love you but put that leash on me again and I will destroy every shoe in your closet.” I also amassed a “personal gym” in the sense I have an elliptical, a few weights, and a bike lying around my basement.

The other cool thing is you can stream it on your TV. Which beats squinting into an iPhone to see what everyone’s doing while you’re pulsing up and down in full-on exercise mode.  Plus doing it all in your personal space makes you feel like you’re there in the studio but without the hassle. Plus, as some of us may remember from years past gym-rat days, the effectiveness of the ellip tical, the workout machine that has been at the forefront of fitness for decades, is unmatched. Ellipticals are comfortable (no getting used to a seat!), safe, and super effective. The fact that you can burn up to 500 calories in a quick 30-minute ses sion speaks for itself!  Put yourself first in your self-care, and make sure your routine supports the life you want instead of living to support the routine you think you ought to have.

Q+A With Local Fashion Personnel ARTICLE BY ASHLEY ALT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE FONG, MARIA TURKEL Local fashion experts on what they do and why it matters OUR TOWN | STYLE + BEAUTY54

ASHLEY: TELL US HOW YOU GOT STARTED AS A PERSONAL STYLIST.

ASHLEY: WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU? MARIA: A fun, judgment-free, authentic collabora tion. My goal is to help each person feel confident and authentic in their everyday lives through their ward robe choices. No closet or price point is too big or too small. Location doesn’t matter—we can meet virtually and achieve equally great results as when I meet people in their homes.

SEPTEMBER 2022

I spoke with two of Greenwich’s fashion experts for our style issue.

KATIE: The boutique carries my Seasonless Collection which is entirely made-to-order and available in over 300 colors. While our typical turnaround time is 5-8 weeks, we have been extremely busy with the surge in weddings, so I always recommend more lead time! I have also collaborated with several small jewelry and accessories designers (many of them local) to offer our customers a selection of high-quality fashion jewelry and fine accessories.

Katie Fong Collection started in her parent’s house in 2012 when I decided to turn an unused library space into my workroom. I was working full time in the city and then coming home to pattern and sew made-to-measure garments for my own clients. In January 2013, I left my job and officially launched my company.

KATIE: Growing up in Greenwich, I was surrounded by classic and timeless fashion with a modern and feminine twist. Greenwich women have always had an effortless, elegant way of dressing, which I still think is true to this day. I’ve come to discover over the years of having my boutique in town that this style is appreciated by women all over the country.

ASHLEY:  WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN COMING INTO YOUR BOUTIQUE?

ASHLEY: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE STYLE SCENE IN GREENWICH? MARIA: The variety of shops on Greenwich Avenue, in Cos Cob and Old Greenwich is just wonderful. I appreciate that people in Greenwich like to get dressed for all types of events in their lives whether they’re running errands, going to lunch/dinner or attending a special event.

ADDRESS: 60 Lewis St. Greenwich, CT Wardrobe stylist Maria Turkel has been boosting peo ple’s confidence since 2007, whether they’re running errands or board meetings.

MARIA: I was one of the original wardrobe supervisors on the TV show, Friends, dressing all six main cast members each week, as well as all guest stars and background artists. Additionally, I’m trained in fash ion design and can sketch, drape and sew. After mov ing back East and starting a family, I decided to use my training and experience to start a business that fed my creativity, uplifted others (women, mainly), and fit into my life as a wife and mom of three children.

ASHLEY: FINALLY, ARE THERE ANY STYLE TIPS OR WORDS OF FASHION WISDOM YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? MARIA: Always, always wear what feels good on YOU. The best way to find your personal style is to focus on your favorites regardless of what others are wearing or what others say is stylish or fashionable. Learn what works on you and build an amazing wardrobe from there. When you look good, you feel good and when you feel good, you do good.

Beth Krupa explains the purpose and inspiration behind the design…  “Our client, as a present to herself for her 70th birthday, bought this townhome to be closer to her daughter, new son-in-law, and grandchild. She’s a racehorse owner (and rescuer) who often trav els between Saratoga, NYC, and CT, so the design was about making her home a “showplace”, a place to entertain and host friends when they are in town.” By John Stefanick

With the homeowner’s father having been an artist, original artwork was an important and symbolic addition to the home. His philosophy “to always surround yourself in beauty ” captures the essence of this whole house project.

In the living room, the custom hand-painted feature wall by Phillip Bland, a decorative artist on Long Island, is a stand-out focal point of this space. Phillip has worked with Anna Wintour on her various homes and is the painter behind the incredibly detailed Met Gala-themed carpets eachWashedyear. desert rose herringbone wool drapery with fringed sheers adds a dramatic effect. Lots of luxe lounge seating was added for parties and entertaining, all pointed towards the “fire and ice” gas fireplace. The organic sculptural lighting adds a modern, yet feminine flair and sets the mood for evening chats by the fire. The original art in the foreground is by Suzann Kaltbaum.

The owner often travels back and forth to Saratoga, so the dining room design was very much inspired by her equine passions and desire to enter tain! We transformed what was once a common dining room into a barlike lounge—complete with a custom deep teal leather banquette, custom lounge swivel chairs, and a large faux horn starburst patterned table. Three sunset velvet barstools accompany the adjacent console bar. Wink Gaines, an award-winning wildlife photographer, captures the essence of the room with a high-energy racehorse image printed in HD on aluminum metal. The jockey silks of the winning horse in the artwork were custom colored to match the owner’s own racehorse silks making this print not only personal but one-of-a-kind.

The homeowner wanted to feel like she was on a vacation-like retreat when she entered her main bedroom after a long day. To create that vibe, we layered coconut shell panels onto the 16’ high pitched ceiling adding instant warmth and used her favorite muted color palette to create a soothing and relaxing ambiance.

The Marketplace opened in January 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, even when Katsaros’ family restaurant had to close its doors.  Katsaros said it was a time of much uncertainty, of working late nights to get the store ready, of not knowing whether people would feel comfortable coming in and of how she would be able to fill the space with things to sell.

As a Christian, Katsaros said the idea for a place like The Marketplace came to her in a dream. Even in a time full of uncertainty, Katsaros said her entrepreneurial skills and her faith helped her to take that leap of opening a thrift store.

“I think that in many ways that was the faith-based part of me that was like it’s in my heart to do it,” Katsaros said.

ARTICLE BY ELLA MORRISSEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHELLE

Regardless of whether The Marketplace is profitable or stays on Mill Street, Katsaros said she hopes the thrift store is a catalyst in more small family businesses coming to Byram.  Katsaros, who grew up just blocks from where her businesses are now located, has been a part of her fam ily’s restaurant since she was 3, and even now living in Westchester, still considers Byram home.

“I love the store, so I just want to see it continue and evolve, maybe even adding a little coffee bar at some point,” Katsaros said.  Katsaros and her employees attend tag sales, estate sales, and thrift stores in search of items to sell. They often refur bish the pieces and sell them at The Marketplace at an afford able price. Every donation that is brought to their doors, whether sellable or not, is put to good use. Katsaros donates items to her church, gives them away for free to families in need, and partners with other charitable organizations.

BRINGING

“Even though it’s this tiny little thrift store, it’s got a lot more meaning than just a tiny little thrift store,” Katsaros said.

THRIFT AND

Owner Maria Katsaros said she attributes this verse to the vision of The Marketplace — putting trust into something and seeing where it takes you.  Katsaros, a Byram native, who also co-owns Famous Greek Kitchen on North Water Street with her family, said she was always looking for ways to give back to her community.

Wanting to give the store a familial feel, Katsaros employed women from the area, each one in need of a new STYLE IN BYRAM ZAGARDO AND THE MARKETPLACE HOW THE MARKETPLACE IS TOGETHER A COMMUNITY opportunity in a store like The Marketplace. In the future, Katsaros hopes to hand the business over to Kate and Megan Fronio, two sisters from Byram who currently run the store.

“I’m just going to trust it. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. If it does, then it’ll be fantastic.”

Nestled among the local businesses on Mill Street that give the town of Byram its small and tight knit commu nity feel is The Marketplace by Fofie and Mia’s, offering refurbished antiques and a curated selection of vintage clothes and accessories.

“If the community and the area and the people put enough love into this place, if they really see the larger picture, they’ll continue to support the place and then this place can stay here,” Katsaros said.

The Marketplace’s main goal is to serve as a place of comfort and creativity for anyone needing something like that. To Katsaros and the employees, customers are family.

Upon entering the thrift shop, prints and paintings from local artists line the walls. The shelves and floor place are filled with eclectic yet organized items. Above the checkout counter hangs a verse from Jeremiah 29:11, which reads, “I know the plans I have for you…”.

62

“The better the businesses, the cooler this whole area can become, we’re almost there,” Katsaros said. “In other towns, a lot of families, they outgrow it and they move, but in Byram, we all just keep on evolving and just staying in the area.”

The Marketplace also recently held a prom event, host ing it for the Byram Neighborhood Association, where the store was closed for the day, and teens could come in to get dresses, shoes, and accessories for their prom.

“That’s the stuff that we want to do,” Katsaros said. “We just really want to support people. We are a store of love and want to give back.”
