Ridding mental health stigma one bracelet at a time, two passionate sisters are on a mission to normalize mental illness

Over the past handful of years, there has been a dramatic increase in brand partnerships via the fashion industry and mental health space. I’m sure you’ve noticed the “Being Kind is Cool” coffee mugs and “Mental Health Matters” sweatshirts blowing up your Instagram feed and covering the shelves of your favorite shops —perhaps you even have one. While positive mental health awareness is obviously a good thing, the larger point can get lost when blanket statements like “Therapy is for Everyone” and the ones mentioned above are thrown around flippantly or used out of context. Thankfully, there is a slew of companies and influential individuals who are doing it right (read: thoughtfully), including the founders of a new jewelry brand that I’m confident you will love.

A BRAND WITH MEANING Presently is a modern jewelry brand and online educational platform that strives to help others discover real, effective ways to feel less overwhelmed and removed from the present moment. Founded and run by NYC-based sisters, Emily and Lindsay Stetzer, Presently is making a positive impact on both the mental health and beauty spaces,

normalizing mental health issues like OCD and anxiety, instead of shaming them. With Emily's desire to close the gap in the market, and Lindsay's passion for speaking out about her personal experience with OCD, Presently became a reality. Wanting to utilize the skills they mastered in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a means to help others, the pair came up with the idea of having helpful phrases that would sum up what they needed to do to get out of their heads and into the present moment. “We thought, okay, let’s wear it on a bracelet so it’s always within arms’ reach, especially when our therapists aren’t around,” they said. During their research, they discovered a gap in the “inspirational” jewelry space. “There were tons of brands that had jewelry with phrases or mantras on them, but none of the phrases they offered would have been approved by our therapists,” they said.

TOXIC POSITIVITY VERSUS HELPFUL MANTRAS While phrases like “Good vibes only” and “Happiness is a choice” may seem helpful on the surface, oftentimes they have the opposite intended effect because they simply aren’t realistic, and are teaching people to bury their negative or anxious feelings instead of sitting with them and letting them pass. “On the surface, these phrases seem harmless and motivational,” they explained. “But they are classic examples of toxic positivity. In therapy, we’re taught cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness techniques, which helps us acknowledge and identify unhelpful thought patterns that lead to unhelpful behaviors.” The Stetzer sisters explained if you are constantly trying to override your intrusive thoughts with “positive” thoughts, all you’re really doing is running away from the problem instead of solving it.

THE PERFECT GIFT Offering mindfulness bracelets with phrases like “Brave the uncomfortable” and “Embrace uncertainty,” Presently is making a positive impact in their customers’ daily lives with relatable messaging. They also give back to mental health organizations, donating $5 of every bracelet sold to mental health nonprofits. Currently selling gold bracelets made of 14k gold-plated brass, silver bracelets made of sterling silver-plated brass, and beaded bracelets handmade by Emily and Lindsay themselves, the materials are carefully chosen as the founders want each item to last through everyday wear, while also being affordable. In 2023, the pair hopes to expand their product offerings, exploring the idea of creating more bracelet styles and incorporating rings into the collection. “We hope to reach more and more people who might be silently struggling with anxiety or OCD. ER: When I graduated from the New York Presbyterian Plastic Surgery program in 2001, Plastic Surgery was done with less finesse and artistry than it is now. Some results were rather cringeworthy and unnatural. Today with the combination of non-invasive modalities, our results are more linear and natural. Patients are returning to their old selves and they don’t have to look like anyone else.

Greenwich Lifestyle asked Laura why she felt compelled to begin a career in real estate in the Southeast area of the Sunshine State. She says, "My parents were developers in Argentina and when we came to Miami in 1982 my parents kept building and remodeling high-end single-family homes and condominiums. Real Estate has been the subject of conversation in my house since I was a kid." Laura graduated from the University of Miami, BSSA, with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Analysis. She says, "I had the opportunity to work for a few years in Real Estate, I started and raised a family so when my kids started high school it was natural for me to get into Real Estate as it was my passion and my joy. I love every aspect of the real estate business." Her passion for travel and wanting to help people find their new homes was also a reason she decided to build a career in real estate. "I have a thorough understanding of different cultures, likes and needs which gives me an advantage in understanding and really listening to what people want and look for in a new home," says Laura. Dedicated to her community, Laura gives generously to numerous charities, hospitals, and foundations that support children’s causes. Though her thriving business keeps her busy, when she has free time, she loves to spend it with her family, friends, and her dog. SPICED GRANOLA RECIPE WARM SPICED GRANOLA Paired with icy cold yogurt, fruit and honey during the summer or over baked apples drizzled with maple syrup in the cold months, or even straight out of the jar as a healthy snack, it’s a must have.

INGREDIENTS + 4 C. of Rolled Oats

+ 1 C. Sour Cherries

+ 1 C. of unsweetened

+ 1/2 C. Avocado Oil

Toasted Coconut Strips

+ 1/2 C. Maple Syrup

+ 1/2 C. Honey Roasted

+ 2 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon

Sliced Almonds (optional)

+ 2 Tsp. Pumpkin Spice

+ 1/2 C. Pumpkin Seeds

+ 1/2 Tsp. Salt

DIRECTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 250 degrees 02 Crumble coconut strips with a tight squeeze before adding. 03 Gently stir all ingredients together in a large bowl thoroughly. 04 Line a large baking sheet with parchment or slip pad. 05 Evenly spread granola across pan 06 Bake for 30-45 minutes, keeping an eye on when the granola looks lightly browned. 07 Remove from oven and let cool. 08 Store in a large glass jar TIP The trick to having large chunks of granola is to let it fully cool after removing it from the oven and then gently scraping a large wooden spoon through it. This will allow for big pieces to be kept as well as smaller crumbles along the way.

Greenwich Avenue Holiday Sparkle There is nothing like the magic of Greenwich Avenue around the holidays. The first time I visited Greenwich in the winter of 2008, I thought it was such a special place and that one day I could see myself living in this community. Fast forward to 10 years later, I moved to Greenwich and launched this community publication with a similar vision of giving back to an already vibrant place. In 1990, The Greenwich Chamber of Commerce created a “Let There Be Lights” initiative as a 501©(3) for the goal and purpose of executing an annual lighting display in downtown Greenwich. Within the Chamber Board, member merchants and owners set out to raise money from the residential and business community for the lights. Hangs to light sparkle down the avenue and from across Putnam Avenue from Mason to Lafayette. After 9/11, interested parties expressed the need for a formal 9/11 town memorial site so, in 2012, the name was changed to the Greenwich Community Projects Funds in order to be a conduit for other town projects. Subsequently, the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce sought the assistance of Greenwich Green and Clean to take over the downtown lights display as they carry out the

beautiful hanging baskets on the lampposts. Greenwich Green and Clean then executed the lights for approximately 5 years. In 2018, Greenwich Green and Clean voted to no longer handle the project and the town was going to be dark. At that point, Greenwich residents Alyssa Keleshian, of K Investments and Rick Kral, of the Greenwich Water Club took it upon themselves to handle the entire project with the assistance of Linda Sigler, a local volunteer. In 2019, without the support of an organization, no lights were hung. In 2020, Sebastian Dostmann stepped up to take on the project and with Alyssa Keleshian and Rick Kral, the three have been behind the Greenwich Community Project's Fund “Let There Be Lights” Initiative. The lights have expanded to encompass the sidestreets of Greenwich Avenue and pockets of Cos Cob with special emphasis on town landmarks including the Board of Education and Senior Centers. “Our goal is to keep the lights on and expand the program to other villages in town. The only way to do this is through the generosity of our local businesses and residents. We receive no money from the town and don’t spend a dime on solicitation mail or promotions,” said Alyssa. Greenwich is such a special place and more importantly are the people in it. Together through the support of many community sponsors and donations, the trio of Alyssa, Rick and Sebastian to give back in an insightful and inspiring way. Greenwich Community Projects Fund is a 501©(3) based in Greenwich, CT, that raises money to support community-focused projects. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
