Men in Motion: Work, Family, Community

In this month’s issue we’re sharing a collection of stories that highlight the men and relationships shaping our community every day.

From the ice rink to the office to the ballfield, this issue offers a closer look at the lives behind the headlines. We sit down with two players from the Greensboro Gargoyles to talk about settling into the area and what it means to connect with fans locally. We also feature a father-and-son team behind a financial advising firm, exploring how family and business intersect. And we meet a local business owner who runs a kitchen and bath refinishing company while spending his evenings coaching his son’s middle school baseball team.

As I read through these stories, I kept coming back to the idea of presence— showing up for your work, your family, and your community in meaningful ways. It’s reflected in the way these individuals approach their careers, support the people around them, and make time for what matters most.

We hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as we did.

Cheers,

June 2026

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. Cheerwine Old Fashioned

The team at 'cille & 'scoe share their Southern twist on a classic cocktail

While the Old Fashioned first emerged as a “gentleman’s” drink in the 1880s, today it can be enjoyed by anyone. Try your hand at this unique version of the classic cocktail, right in the comfort of your own home.

Notes:

• This recipe uses Cheerwine syrup, which is 5x more concentrated than the soda. You can purchase it directly from Cheerwine (store. cheerwine.com/).

• Alternatively, you can make your own Cheerwine syrup by bringing 12 oz of Cheerwine soda to a boil for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup of cane sugar. Let it cool completely and store in a mason jar.

Ingredients:

• 2 dashes Angostura bitters

• ½ oz Cheerwine syrup

• 2 oz Old Nick Williams (or your bourbon of choice)

• Orange peel (for expression)

• Maraschino cherry (for garnish)

• Large ice cube

Directions:

1. Add the bitters and Cheerwine syrup to a lowball (rocks) glass.

2. Pour in the bourbon.

3. Add a large ice cube.

4. Stir gently until well chilled.

5. Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink, then drop it in.

6. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

This cocktail has been one of our favorite drink offerings at 'cille & 'scoe. We're so grateful they shared the recipe with us as they soon bid farewell to downtown and their 312 S. Elm Street location.

SIDE BY SIDE

This father-and-son team in Greensboro brings a personal touch to retirement and financial planning.

When it comes to navigating your finances or planning for retirement, working with knowledgeable, trustworthy professionals is essential. Alpha Omega Financial offers that — and more.

Managing Partner and Retirement Specialist Scott Graham and his team bring a personal, family-centered approach to helping clients reach their goals. With an office in Greensboro and virtual consultation options, expert guidance is always within reach.

After working more than two decades in transportation and logistics, Scott made a career shift that would ultimately shape the next chapter of his life. “I was drawn to the ability to help people with an important part of their lives,” he says. That decision led him to Equitable, where he spent years developing both his practice and leadership experience before launching Alpha Omega Financial in 2014 alongside a small team. Today, the firm has grown to include multiple advisors across North Carolina, reflecting both its steady evolution and expanding reach.

After much consideration, Scott’s son Pete joined Alpha Omega Financial in 2022 after nearly a decade working in pharmacy, much of it in hospice. “I saw how much dad loved

what he did, and the benefit he provided to individuals,” says Pete. He brought with him a people-first mindset and a detail-oriented approach that complements his father’s experience. Together, they’ve formed a dynamic that blends perspective and precision. “It’s been extremely rewarding to see Pete grow and develop,” Scott shares. “It makes me extremely proud.”

At its core, the business focuses on investment advice, retirement planning, and family protection strategies such as life insurance and long-term-care planning. But what sets the firm apart is how they tailor advice to each individual client. “We’ve never taken a cookie cutter approach,” Scott explains. “We need to know where people are, what their priorities and values are. We gather info and get to know their story.”

That emphasis on understanding each client’s individual journey extends beyond financial documents. It often means navigating the emotional side of major life decisions, which is something Pete has come to appreciate deeply.

Their working relationship has also strengthened their personal bond. “From my perspective it’s only served to further strengthen our relationship,” Pete says.

That sense of continuity is something clients value, as well. In a field where long-term planning is essential, knowing there’s a trusted team in place — now and in the future — offers reassurance. As Scott notes, “People feel a level of comfort knowing we work together, side by side.”

Beyond the office, both men remain deeply connected to their community. From church involvement to supporting local businesses and nonprofits, their ties to Greensboro run deep. It’s evident that Scott has sincere interest and care for his clients, and some have become valued friends. “I’ve attended retirement events, graduations, funerals…” he reflects.

It’s that genuine curiosity — and care — that defines Scott and Pete’s work. Whether they’re guiding a young professional just getting started or helping someone approach retirement with confidence, the goal remains the same: to meet people where they are and help them move forward with clarity.

For the team at Alpha Omega Financial, success isn’t measured in numbers; it’s measured in relationships that last.

The Perfect Steak

Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?

1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.

2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.

3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.

4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.

6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.

7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:

• Rare: 120°F

• Medium Rare: 130°F

• Medium: 140°F

• Medium Well: 150°F

• Well: 160°F

8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

Beyond the Ballfield

Business owner, coach, and father Andrew Kearns is making an impact across the Triad

It’s a sunny day in North Carolina during baseball season. The sky is blue, filled with the distinctive ping of bats and cheers from the stands. In the middle of it all is Andrew Kearns, coaching his 13-year-old son Flynn’s team — something he’s done since the early days of T-ball.

Off the field, Andrew is the owner of Surface Specialists of the Triad. The company focuses on repairs and refinishing for bathroom and kitchen surfaces, including tub-to-shower conversions. Andrew had spent more than a decade in sales before making the leap into business ownership. While selling maintenance supplies, he noticed a growing demand for surface repair and refinishing services. “I thought, why not do it for myself and build something from the ground up?” With that mindset, and the confidence to back it up, he purchased the Triad franchise of Surface Specialists 10 years ago.

For homeowners weighing their options, Andrew says the cost difference between refinishing and replacement is often the deciding factor. “Full replacement can run anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000,” he explains. “Refinishing is typically in the hundreds. It’s a much more affordable option.”

Today, Andrew runs a small but nimble operation with a handful of employees. He himself wears just about every hat. “There’s never a typical day,” he says. From scheduling and customer communication to handling receivables, he’s involved in every aspect of the business. It’s a pace that requires flexibility but also offers a frontrow seat to what he enjoys most: the results.

“The transformation,” he says. “Seeing the before and after, and knowing we’re saving people money, is really rewarding.”

That value, combined with a longstanding system of support, helps set the company apart. As part of a national franchise established in 1981, Andrew benefits from decades of proprietary products and processes. “There’s 45 years of experience behind what we do,” he says. “That support makes a difference.”

Outside of work, Andrew’s life centers around his family. He and his wife and son spend much of their free time together, often outdoors. “We spend a lot of time at the beach, boating, and fishing,” he says.

“We travel a lot and just enjoy being together, whether that’s at home or with friends in the neighborhood.”

That sense of presence is something Andrew prioritizes, even amid the demands of running a business. “When there’s still a stack of papers on my desk, it’ll still be there tomorrow,” he says. “Be present.”

Much of that presence shows up on the field. Andrew has coached his son’s teams since his early days in T-ball, continuing through basketball and now middle school baseball as Flynn plays second base. “I played sports myself, and I feel like I have something to give back,” says Andrew. “I enjoy the kids and the teaching part of it.”

It’s a balance that offers perspective, too. Time spent coaching and being around young athletes provides a welcome contrast to the day-to-day responsibilities of business ownership. “It’s a nice release from the grind,” he says.

Whether he’s refinishing a worn-out tub, coaching a team, or spending time with family, Andrew always remains focused on what matters and stays present in the moment. It’s a philosophy that continues to shape both his business and his life here in the Triad.
