a place to belong
From opera stages to open houses, Jennifer Pedersen helps families find their perfect place
When Jennifer Pedersen relocated to Greensboro in 2019 for her husband’s job, she was on the cusp of one of life’s biggest transitions. Just two weeks before welcoming their first child, they arrived without deep local roots or a built-in network. Like many families starting over, they were searching for something more than a house: they were looking for a place to belong.
As the Pedersens explored the area, one neighborhood stood out. Lake Jeanette offered walkability, a sense of safety, and attractive amenities such as pools, tennis, and green spaces. It also offered the welcoming community Jennifer envisioned for raising children. Those qualities became even more meaningful during the isolation of the pandemic, when neighborhood walks and conversations from a safe distance helped families stay connected. That experience shaped not only Jennifer’s life as a mother, but eventually her career as a realtor.
Before real estate, Jennifer earned a doctorate in music and built a career as an opera singer, voice teacher, and educator. Bright, approachable, and quick to put others at ease, she brings an infectious enthusiasm and

genuine desire to help people in every interaction. While the professions may seem worlds apart, she discovered surprising similarities. “There is an element of performance in real estate,” she says. “You have to study, prepare, communicate, and connect with people.”
Today, Jennifer helps families navigate one of the most important decisions they’ll ever make with the same warmth, optimism, and care that define her personality. As a realtor, she believes buyers aren’t simply purchasing houses; they’re choosing a lifestyle. Her job is to help them find a home that supports the life they want to build.
Jennifer guides clients through careful evaluation of schools, neighborhood amenities, and access to activities. Communities such as Lake Jeanette, Green Valley, Friendly, Hamilton Lakes, and the growing northwest Guilford areas of Summerfield and Stokesdale continue to attract families seeking strong schools, established neighborhoods, and opportunities for children to thrive.
As a mother of two and self-described “connector,” Jennifer has become a trusted source for local recommendations. “I know all the kid-friendly activities and can tell you where the best playgrounds are,” she shares proudly. “The best part of raising kids in Greensboro is the access to so many activities and cultural opportunities.” Ask Jennifer to plan a perfect family day out in Greensboro and the list comes quickly: Explore the Miriam P. Brenner Children’s Museum, LeBauer Park, and ArtQuest at GreenHill; walk through Country Park and along the city’s extensive greenway system; go on a playground adventure at Lake Daniel Park; and end with delicious pizza at Cugino Forno.
That spirit of connection remains at the heart of everything she does. Whether she’s introducing newcomers to local resources, serving her community, or helping clients find the right neighborhood, Jennifer is passionate about helping families discover what she found when she moved here: a place that truly feels like home.

SUPPLIES:
• Beeswax beads
• Fabric
• Pinking shears
• Parchment paper
• Baking sheet
INSTRUCTIONS:
01. PREHEAT your oven to its lowest setting.
02. CUT FABRIC into desired shapes. Using pinking shears so the fabric doesn’t fray, you can cut your fabric into any shape or size you’d like. Consider what size or shape of food you store the most and use that as a guide.
03. PREP + MELT. Cover your baking sheet with parchment paper and place the cut fabric on top. Sprinkle with beeswax beads and place in the oven to allow beeswax to melt for 5-10 minutes.
04. KEEP IT COOL. Remove fabric from baking sheet (careful, it’s hot!) and allow wax to harden and cool.
FOR REUSE, wash in cool water (you don’t want the wax to melt!) with mild dish soap and let air dry.

FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS
ALL PETS CONSIDERED REMAINS A TRUSTED RESOURCE FOR PET OWNERS
Pets hold a special place in our hearts and homes. We love them, care for them, and want the very best for them. That’s why it’s important to find trusted professionals who care about our pets as much as we do. All Pets Considered is one of those places.
ARTICLE BY KARI SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUTUMN HOLLIFIELD
Owner Alison Schwartz recalls one customer saying that walking into the store felt the TV show Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Or, as an All Pets Considered T-shirt proudly proclaims: “Where everybody knows your pet’s name.”
Alison always knew she wanted to work with animals. As a child, she thought the path was limited to veterinary work. But years later, she discovered another trajectory. Alison first became familiar with the locally owned All Pets Considered while volunteering with a dachshund rescue organization. She forged relationships with the staff members and the store’s founder, Kristine Godfrey. That led to Alison eventually taking on a part-time position at the store. Her progression upward was very organic: Employee, manager, general manager, and then part-owner. In 2024, Kristine strategically exited the business and Alison assumed full ownership.
Founded in 1992, All Pets Considered has grown from a single location into a trusted community resource for pet owners across the Triad. Today, the business operates two stores: 2614 Battleground Avenue (which also offers grooming services) and 5004 High Point Road (which offers self-service dog washing). Both locations offer premium food, supplies, gifts, and expert guidance for dogs, cats, and small animals. They specialize in high-quality goods, smaller brands, and niche products. “We always research the products before bringing them into the store, and we know the owners of the pet food companies,” says Alison. “Quality and sourcing are important to us.”
While the products are important, Alison believes the store’s greatest strength is its people. “We spend a significant amount of time training our staff,” she says. “We want them to truly understand the products we carry so they can help customers make informed decisions.”
As pet ownership continues to evolve, Alison has witnessed growing interest in nutrition, wellness, and more natural approaches to pet care. She believes
today’s pet owners are increasingly focused on helping their animals live longer, healthier lives. Whether she and her staff are helping solve a pet health issue or guiding a family toward a better nutrition plan, Alison finds fulfillment in improving the lives of pets and the people who love them.
The business’s local focus has helped it thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Alison notes that All Pets Considered often matches or beats larger competitors through loyalty programs, competitive pricing, online ordering, and free same-day local delivery throughout much of Guilford County.
Serving local pet owners means more than providing quality products and convenient services.
All Pets Considered is deeply involved in the community through sponsoring local teams, attending neighborhood events, supporting fundraisers, and donating hundreds of gift baskets each year to charitable causes.
In the end, it’s not just about pet products. It’s about people, relationships, and a shared love of animals.

Summertime is busy time, and that often means eating on the go. Whether you’re at constant baseball games or meeting up for a regular play date, you’re probably bringing food along with you to feed your crew. And there’s no meal that’s as on-the-go friendly as the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
And don’t get me wrong — I love a PB&J. But months of eating anything can get a little old, and this summer, I started to wonder if there was a way to zhuzh up the ol’ standby.
I was actually inspired by a sandwich at one of my favorite places to eat. All the restaurant’s sandwiches feature cheese. So color me surprised when I found that they had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the menu — with the addition of sheep’s cheese. And cue more surprise when I discovered that it was absolutely delicious.
IT’S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME
CHANGE UP YOUR PB&J GAME BY DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO ENJOY THE OL’ STANDBY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE CURRID
All summer, I was craving this sandwich, a fresh PB&J sandwich on sourdough. I decided to try my own at home with what I had on hand, which was goat cheese. And it opened up a whole new world for me.
The PB&J with goat cheese started being my standard poolside sandwich this summer, and then I started talking to other people about it, spreading the gospel of the PB&J with cheese, and they would share their PB&J innovations with me. You could toast them! Put chips on them! Add bacon! The possibilities were endless.
The PB&J is so nostalgic and, yeah, sometimes, you just want a really basic one on white bread with grape jelly and creamy Jif like you had when you were a kid. But it’s also fun to be playful about it, which is nostalgic in its own way, too — being innovative and doing something a little weird or against the rules, just like when you were a kid.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO CHANGE UP YOUR PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH:
Change up your bread: One easy way to liven up your sandwich is to use different bread. That sourdough you may have learned to make during the pandemic is a perfect bread to use, or you could opt for milk bread, a Japanese option that is fluffier and sweeter than white bread.
Get nutty: While most toddlers would balk at crunchy peanut butter, you’re an adult! You can try new things! If you don’t have the crunchy type on hand, you can also just add peanuts between your layers of peanut butter and jelly to get that crunchy fix.
Toast it: One of my favorite ways to make an “elevated” PB&J is to simply toast it. It’s really similar to grilled cheese — make your PB&J, and then spread some butter on the outside on both sides. Melt some butter in a pan and add your sandwich, flipping once browned. If you want to get really fancy, sprinkle some powdered sugar on before you cut into it. I promise it will be your new late-night craving.
New spreads: You probably already have a go-to jelly for your PB&J (mine is strawberry), but change it up a bit and try raspberry or apricot. Honey is a great addition, too! I’ve also heard ginger or lemon preserves are great, or you could try swapping the peanut butter out for something different nut butter, or even something worldly like tahini, which is a ground sesame seed paste with a similar flavor to peanut butter.
Fresh fruit: This is probably the simplest way to up your PB&J game, since technically, you’ve already got fruit on your sandwich in the form of jelly. Try adding some smashed raspberries or cut strawberries to yours next time you make one!
Add some spice: Putting some spice on your PB&J can add some interest. Sambal, an Indonesian chili paste, is a good option because it lends itself to sweetness, or Sriracha is an easy one since it’s a common fridge staple. I’m also a big fan of gochujang, a mildly spicy Korean paste with a hint of sweetness. It’s best to mix your spice in with your peanut butter before spreading it — it’ll remind you of satay!
Chip in: Probably the wackier idea you’ll see here, and one a toddler would either love or abhor, but chips on sandwiches are a great way to add crunchiness and saltiness to any sandwich — especially the PB&J. Apparently, Channing Tatum loves to eat Cheetos on his PB&J, though I’ve had others tell me they love to add Doritos — both the Nacho and Cool Ranch variety — to theirs, too.
Say cheese: As I said earlier, you’ve gotta try cheese on your PB&J. I’m a fan of goat cheese, specifically the honey variety, but plain versions or those with dried fruit are great, too. The trick is to set it out for 15-20 minutes before making your sandwich to soften it a bit, so it’s easier to spread on delicate bread.
It’s bacon!: Bacon lends itself well to peanut butter because it’s also both sweet and salty. If you’re opposed to adding straight-up strips of bacon to your sandwich, a bacon jam, which you can buy or make at home, is a good stepping stone to getting out of your comfort zone.
Ready, Set, School!
Alexandra Premeaux, counselor at St. Pius X Catholic School, shares tips for helping children thrive
What are a few simple ways families can help children build confidence before the first day of school?
Let them take part in the preparations. Allow them to choose their backpack and help set up their new pencil case or lunchbox. The more autonomy and inclusion they can take part in, the better.
How can parents help children adjust to changes such as a new teacher, school, or routine?
Prepare them as much as you can. It's impossible to know everything about a teacher, school, or routine, but you can let your child know that they have all the skills they need to handle it.
Are there any routines or habits you recommend starting before school begins to ease the transition?
As much as you can, practice getting the correct amount of sleep and getting back in the school routine. You may even choose to include some morning affirmations
such as “you are capable of anything” or “you will have a great school year.”
How important is sleep and routine when preparing for the school year?
Sleep is so important! If your child has been sleeping in during summer break, I advise shifting to the school schedule at least a week beforehand. That will help them not feel rushed on the first day of school.
Are there any school resources or support systems families should know about if a child is having a difficult transition?
Reach out to their teacher, school counselor, or administration. Depending on your child's needs, there are usually many people at the school that can help.
If you could share one encouraging message with students heading back to school, what would it be?
A new school year can be daunting, but take it one day at a time! And remember, you can always ask for help.
UNPLUG HAVE FUN! &

Summertime is the best time for kids to disconnect and enjoy being outdoors.
Long, long ago, in a time before technology, children entertained themselves and played endlessly with nothing more than ... wait for it ... their imagination. They played outdoors for hours with friends, balls, jump ropes, buckets, chalk, bicycles, you name it! The level of creativity saw no limits in the minds of these children. While some families have plans for getaway vacations, there are those planning to stay home and scrambling for things their children can do. We’d like to share some ideas that don’t include technology or cost a boatload of money for that matter. The benefits of spending time outdoors and unplugged outweigh complaints about temperature or those annoying creepy crawlers. The added bonus is that many outdoor games secretly teach life skills. Technology is used only to confirm game rules.
Ready or not, it’s time to play! A day - or two or three - full of outdoor games will invoke a trip down memory lane for some adults, or a “this is great” thought for others. In either case, playing these games has tremendous benefits - young people can fully embrace human connection, get a break from the instant gratification associated with technical devices and social media, and enjoy some good wholesome, age-appropriate fun. Many adults admit they played many of their favorite childhood games well into their teen years, and still others say they relish in a good game of dodgeball or tug of war today. This list is not all-inclusive, but it certainly gets the games started!
CHILDHOOD GAMES
TUG OF WAR - contest between two teams at opposite ends of a rope; each team trying to drag the other across a center line.
SACK RACE - stand in your sack, hold on to the top of your sack and hop as fast as you can to the finish line!
FREEZE TAG - each player freezes when tagged and can be unfrozen only by a player who is not yet frozen. Game ends when all players are frozen.
RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT - shout “green light” and all players run towards you, shout “yellow light” and they are allowed to walk, but when “red light” is shouted, they must stop and freeze. If player moves at “red light”, they go back to start line.
MUSICAL CHAIRS - walk to music around a group of chairs containing one chair fewer than number of players, and rush to sit down when music stops. The player left standing in each round is eliminated.
KICK THE CAN - find players in their hiding spots and put them in “jail”. Once a player is “jailed” the only way to be freed is for another player to beat the “IT” person to the can and kick it.
DODGEBALL - team sport in which players on two teams try to throw balls and hit opponents, while avoid being hit themselves. Consider water balloons instead of balls on a hot day.
There are more great outdoor games. Get unplugged and get outside!

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY
ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.
ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.
