CITY OF HENDERSON NAMES STEPHANIE GARCIA-VAUSE NEW ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER City of Henderson Community Development and Services Director Stephanie Garcia-Vause has been named as the city’s new assistant city manager. The

HENDERSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS OUTPACE NATIONAL AVERAGES IN KEY CATEGORIES Henderson public schools are outperforming the national averages in reading, math and graduation rates according to an analysis of educational performance measures conducted by Applied Analysis. Recent research on behalf of the Henderson Community Education Advisory Board evaluated the performance of Henderson public schools compared to other large metropolitan areas throughout the nation. Findings reveal that Henderson’s fifth-grade reading and math proficiency rates rank seventh and 12th respectively

Overall, the graduation rate ranks 138th in the nation in comparison to public schools in other large school districts. There are 38 public schools located within the city limits of Henderson: 25 elementary schools, seven middle schools and six high schools. Total enrollment in Henderson schools averages about 42,000 students.

REGENTS APPROVE NEW MASTER’S DEGREE AT NEVADA STATE COLLEGE The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents voted to approve a new master’s degree in speech-language pathology at Nevada State College. The degree will train students to become certified speech-language pathologists who can provide clinical services in hospitals, clinics and schools. Students who complete this program will be prepared for the Certificate of Clinical Competence national certification examination administered by the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association as well as the licensure tests required by the state. Currently, Nevada State College supports a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology, which allows graduates to work as SLPs in the Clark County School District. However, to work as a professional in speech-language pathology or audiology outside of CCSD, licensure from ASHA is required. Licensure requires a master’s or doctoral degree in the field, 400 hours of clinical practicum, and successful completion of a comprehensive examination. With the board's approval, Nevada State will continue the accreditation process with ASHA. Once accreditation is received, students will be able to enroll in classes for the fall 2019 semester. VIETNAM MEMORIAL WALL REPLICA RETURNS FOR ANNUAL AMERICAN PATRIOT FEST Celebrate America’s revered active military, veterans and those who gave all, along with their families, during the annual American Patriot Fest from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, with opportunities to view the Vietnam Memorial Wall Replica from May 10-13. Festivities will be at Craig Ranch Regional Park, located at 628 W. Craig Road, North Las Vegas, NV 89032. The festival will feature the American Veterans Traveling Tribute, an 80 percent scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., opening at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 10. The AVTT will be presented in the Las Vegas Valley and open 24 hours a day through 3 p.m. Sunday, May 13. The public is invited to view the wall free of charge and make rubbings of the names of their fallen loved ones. Counseling services will be available for those who need it, provided by The Vet Center. The May 12 celebration will feature live entertainment, Cars & Stripes, Jump! The Ultimate Dog Show, kids activities, vendors, fundraising efforts for military/veteran charities and the inaugural Las Vegas Burger Festival.
