WHEN YOU THINK OF FAMILY, WHAT COMES TO MIND? Maybe it’s the people you share your mornings with: the husband or wife who makes you breakfast, the toddler who wakes you up before sunrise or the drooling pup in the kitchen just itching for a full dish of food. Maybe it’s the people you share your years with: the grandfather who tells you old war stories at the Thanksgiving table, the uncle who brings you souvenirs from his travels or the aunt who can almost perfectly replicate your grandmother’s best pie recipe. Or maybe it’s the people you share your life with: the friends who have and always will be there for you, the parents who have always supported you and watched you grow or the kids who are watching and learning from you day after day. This month here at Green Hills Lifestyle, we’re celebrating our Kids + Pets issue.

latest opinion from Tennessee's attorney general.

The program's distinction is factoring in individual differences in lifestyle, environment and biology to deliver "precision medicine." To participate, visit JoinAllOfUs.org.

Earlier in 2018, a new Tennessee law banned all cell phone use in school zones while lights are flashing. Attorney General Herbert Slatery, in an opinion requested by State Rep. William Lamberth, found that because the texting-while-driving ban's legislative language only mentions "public roads and highways" and does not specifically mention parking lots, the law only applies to school pick-up lines if those lines are located on, or extend to, a public road. Slatery also states the texting ban only applies while a car is in motion, so texting while simply sitting in the pick-up line, even if it is on a public road, would still be permitted. However, Slatery's opinion did not address whether a person using a phone while sitting in a pick-up line extending onto a public road could face a $50 fine if that line is situated within a school zone.

SEVEN PET-FRIENDLY PLACES TO VISIT NOW ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

ED

OWNERS OF THE Sunflower Café, 2834 AZALEA PLACE, CLAIM THEY SERVE "FOOD THAT HEALS." Sometimes, that healing definitely involves keeping our dogs near to our hearts — and meals. The café 's staffers say they "absolutely love all the sweet lil' pups brought to their dog-friendly patios" but remind that only service dogs can be brought inside the restaurant. Several of the café's vegetarian and vegan menu items could be shared with leashed canines, especially those dogs who enjoy brown rice, fresh veggies or select fruits. Note that the café is closed on Sundays. One prime Nashville area for eating buddies who happen to be canines are restaurants located off 12th Avenue South! Casual dining spot Urban Grub, 2506 12th Ave. S, with outdoor seating as well as a covered gazebo, is a dog-friendly location. The back patio offers dog water bowls. The restaurant's staffers indicate that dogs really enjoy the salted ham croutons (normally served on salads to people) for special treats. The Edley's Bar-B-Cue 12 South crew at 2706 12th Ave. S looks forward to doggie guests and even sells branded dog collars and shirts. At Burger Up, 2901 12th Ave. S, the beef is sourced from the Steven Lee family at Triple L Ranch in Franklin, along with other like-minded suppliers at Porter Road Butcher. In addition, the restaurant serves as many items and ingredients as possible provided by surrounding area farms and suppliers in Tennessee. It's these high-quality foods at Burger Up that lead to pet owners sharing a few worry-free burger nibbles with their dog companions. For times that "ale you," craft brewer Smith & Lentz Brewing Company at 903 Main St. welcomes leashed dogs on the patio, which has umbrellas and dog water bowls. For doggie events, camp, boarding or grooming, there's Camp Bow Wow at 470 Craighead St., where four-legged customers are more than welcome. Camp Bow Wow periodically teams up with Craft Brewed to host Yappy Hours at which all leashed dogs can celebrate with their humans. Camp Bow Wow offers a second chance to sick and injured dogs in need through the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing urgent medical care funds to dogs who are either homeless or whose parents cannot afford to pay their veterinary bills.

Making Incontinence ‘Talkable’ and Treatable COMPASSIONATE PHYSICIANS HELP PEOPLE REGAIN CONFIDENT LIVES

20

Green Hills Lifestyle | August 2018

AN ESTIMATED 12.2 MILLION ADULTS STRUGGLE

WITH

INCONTINENCE.

This involuntary health situation can feel like a forlorn, embarrassing topic to discuss. Luckily, there is a group of five Franklinbased urologists who gladly talk about and solve incontinence every day with patients. The coalition of health care providers at the Incontinence Institute at the Cool Springs Surgery Center assert they understand the physical and mental challenges that can result from living with urinary or bowel incontinence. Their recommended treatment options automatically factor in discretion. Because individual incontinence conditions, treatments and recovery times vary, the Incontinence Institute team members are prepared with a variety of healing options. Polly Perkins, physician liaison for the institute, says many different questions about urinary and fecal incontinence surface when she hosts health fairs. "It's not just senior citizens who face incontinence

challenges.

It's

often

women in their 40s and 50s who want to exercise but have post-childbirth leakage," she says. She says the institute offers an online self-assessment that helps determine whether one is facing mild, moderate or severe symptoms. "The assessment goes into considerations such as what you drink, how much the situation bothers you, whether you're OK wearing pads, or if it affects how much you leave your home," she adds. Polly says because so many older people want to exercise and travel and not be recluses, identifying the correct incontinence treatment can make huge differences in families and in individual lives. DID YOU KNOW UP TO 11 PERCENT OF MALES SUFFER FROM URINARY INCONTINENCE? Urinary incontinence, or involuntary urination, is extremely common as both men and women age, says Dr. Melissa CONTINUED >

Dr. Harriette Scarpero, a board-certified and fellowship-trained urologist, says the newest addition to their team's armamentarium for stress urinary incontinence is the application of radiofrequency energy to improve the collagen in the vaginal walls in a clinic setting. "This has shown to be most beneficial for mild stress urinary and has the added benefit of improving vaginal laxity," she says. Dr. Scarpero is a partner at Female Urology of Nashville and is director of the Continence Center. She also was among the first group of specialists to be boarded in the specialty of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery through both the American Board of Urology and American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Surgical intervention is not the only option for stress incontinence, but the mid-urethral sling remains the gold standard for this type of leakage that has failed conservative management, says Dr. Tara Allen, who was a founding partner at Female Urology of Nashville in 2017, along with Dr. Abel and Dr. Scarpero. "After a sling at the postoperative appointment, most patients are completely satisfied and wonder why it took them so long to take action," she says. She specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction, including urinary and fecal incontinence, and also offers vaginal reconstruction and vaginal rejuvenation. A LOOK AT DIFFERENT MEDICAL DEVICES DESIGNED FOR WOMEN Botox (botulinum toxin type A) — Inject into bladder muscle to help with overactive bladders. Bulking agents — Inject into tissue around the urethra to help keep urethra closed. Pessary ring — Insert into vagina and wear all day to help hold up the bladder and prevent leakage. Radiofrequency therapy — Heat tissue in the lower urinary tract; when it heals, it's usually firmer, often resulting in better urinary control. Sacral nerve stimulator — Implant wire under buttock skin connecting to a nerve that runs from the spinal cord to bladder; wire emits an electrical pulse that stimulates the nerve, helping bladder control. Urethral Inserts — Insert device before activity and take out to urinate. Besides surgical procedures, other options include absorbent pads or urinary catheters, which consist of a tube that goes from the bladder, through the urethra, and out of the body into a bag which collects urine. Veterinary Care With Caring Attitudes ARE YOU SEEKING A VETERINARY HOSPITAL STAFF THAT CONSIDERS YOUR PETS AS IMPORTANT TO LIFE AS YOU DO? Pet owners want their animals to be treated with kindness, compassion and skill. One Nashville region veterinary team who has that dependable reputation is Hillsboro Animal Hospital. With eight veterinarians on staff and more than 30 health care team members including licensed technicians, assistants and receptionists, the hospital has seven fully equipped rooms. "Our hospital includes a large surgery suite, ultrasound, endoscopy, digital radiography, a critical care unit, oxygen cages and pharmacy," says practice manager Kimberly Hayes. "We perform chemotherapy, soft-tissue, orthopedic and laser surgeries. We also have a Class IV therapy laser for treating patients with arthritis, pain management and post-op recovery." Other services include microchipping, dentistries, chemotherapy, ultrasounds and boarding. She says they also have a fully stocked pharmacy and an online pharmacy that carries all brands of medicines and dietary needs. The Hillsboro team can do most testing in-house, getting results within minutes. They have an external lab for biopsy results and specialized tests, too. Regarding animals in intensive care, they have oxygen cages, IV pumps and monitoring devices. Both operating tables in Hillsboro's surgery suite are heated and connected to pulse ox and ECG monitors. They use anesthetic medications that are individually tailored to pets. They even have separate dog and cat wards, with the cat room being insulated so felines don't stress from hearing canines.

Hillsboro Animal Hospital, a full-service veterinary hospital at 2207 Bandywood Drive, was established in 1968. Staffers recently celebrated the hospital's 50th anniversary of servicing the community's broad range of animals and pet parents. 615.298.2663 HillsboroAnimalHospital.net

Comedy Bus Tour This two-hour adventure is not just for tourists. Details revealed during Nashville’s most fun sightseeing tour often surprise local residents The Redneck Comedy Bus Tour is a great activity when hosting family reunions, weddings or other larger celebrations during which relatives or friends converge. It’s a wonderful way to show off the city while seeing famous landmarks and historic sites. Private tours can even be arranged for groups of 25 or more

Did you know you can get Redneck-certified?

Who

wouldn’t

want to brag about having that designation? Need to bust out your sense of humor and get some good belly laughs? Bus tours are available seven days a week Adult beverages are allowed on the tours because the Redneck comedy team members believe “when riding with the general public, people should not have to face that situation completely sober!

This year marks the 10th season for the comedy tour. Through the end of 2018, local residents can mention the promo code “NASHVILLE” to receive $10 off adult tickets. Tickets range from $25 for children under 12 years; $30 for adults 55 years and older; and $35 for everyone in-between. Bus stops available from the  Nashville Palace and Whiskey Bent Saloon.  For more information, call 615.316.0014 or visit TheRedneckBus.com. 34

I like to make dentistry fun. I go out of my way to provide dental treatment to children in a friendly, non-threatening environment so they look forward to their visits. My practice philosophy is to treat each child like they are my own. Parents choose GHPD because they enjoy being treated like family.
