SOMETIMES YOU WANNA GO WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME, AND THEY’RE ALWAYS GLAD YOU CAME. Sound familiar? But this isn’t "Cheers." This is Firefly Grille located in the heart of Green Hills on Bandywood Drive, about 300 yards away from the famous Bluebird Café. Owner Curt Cole says he started Firefly in 2001 because he wanted a “casual, local, friendly, alternative to the chain operations.” Cole, a born and raised Nashvillian, experienced restauranteur and family man says Firefly Grille is the answer to Nashville’s need for a restaurant providing high-quality, sophisticated cuisine, without the fuss of the traditional fine dining experience. “Imagine wearing jeans and a T-shirt while eating a high-quality filet,” he says. Nashville’s restaurant scene has just exploded in the last few years, and Firefly has definitely grown with the massive influx of people. "I see new restaurants opening every day it seems—primarily chains," Cole says. "The scene has not grown—it has multiplied. The pressure is surely on the independent operators to provide some local color and hospitality.” Apparently, Firefly is doing just that. It’s been voted Best Neighborhood Restaurant a couple of years in a row by Nashville Scene. “What really makes Firefly special is our local regulars," Cole says "Everybody seems to work the room and visit with friends. And it’s got an excellent neighborhood dive vibe.” Vibes aside, Firefly has a seasonally changing menu with a Southern twist. During the winter months, executive chef Kenneth Walters prepares vegan coconut lentil curry or black bean and pork belly quesadillas. Coles says changing the menu, “keeps it fresh and interesting.”

Breast augmentations are up 4 percent, and liposuctions are up 6 percent from the previous year. Enter Dr. Michael Burgdorf, Music City Plastic Surgery president and founder. “I was seeing a lot of the same struggles in women, trying to find their courage," he says. "I would always say, ‘You sacrificed for your family and your children, now it’s time for you.’ It’s much easier to have the conversation with guys because guys are more selfish—‘think about yourself’—but moms just don’t.” Burgdorf recently authored the book, The Mommy Makeover: Restoring Your Body After Childbirth, and it quickly became an Amazon best-seller and was the recipient of several other literary awards. The information-packed book landed him on NBC’s hit afternoon TV show, "The Doctors." “It was nerve-wracking! I had to do the interview across a computer screen,” he says. The Tulane med school graduate adds, “One of our biggest concerns was how do moms talk to their kids about plastic surgery. We want kids to have a positive body image and not think they have to have plastic surgery in order to be beautiful. It’s one of my favorite topics to talk about, and to learn from women what they’d say based on the age of their kids.” Burgdorf repeatedly gives back to his local community by donating some of his services and injectables, but, he says, ‘It never feels like enough.” He serves on the board of A Vintage Affair, an organization whose mission is to provide significant financial contributions to various nonprofit organizations in Williamson County for programs that support the well-being of women and children in need. Additionally, he donates his time to the patients of Mercy Clinic and wants to add building confidence in children to his philanthropic efforts. The compassionate doctor with a favorable bedside manner is a father of four. He and his wife, also a physician, are self-proclaimed food snobs and are both encouraged and excited about the restaurant explosion in the Nashville area. But he says, “the people are the most fun.” The New Jersey native appreciates the Nashville landscape as well. “It’s the geography I love," he says. "I grew up around hills and mountains and loved it. And my wife and I wanted to be in a good place for families.”
