The Holiday Issue

From the Publisher’s Desk: A Holiday Message from Tara & Kennidi
As the year comes to a close, there’s something special about the way Greeley shines during the holidays. Lights twinkle downtown, familiar faces fill local shops, and neighbors pause just a little longer to reconnect. It’s in these moments—both big and small—that we’re reminded what makes this community so extraordinary.

At Greeley Lifestyle, we have the privilege of sharing stories that reflect the heart of this city all year long. This issue, in particular, captures that spirit in so many ways. From Carrie’s Cause, a reminder that hope and generosity can turn loss into legacy, to Christmas Stories to Read Under the Tree, which celebrates the quiet joy of tradition and family, every page invites us to slow down and savor the season.
Our annual Holiday Gift Guide highlights some of the incredible local businesses that make shopping in Greeley feel personal and joyful—Warm Hugs Mixes & Gifts, Foundations Sports Nutrition, Charley & Co Boutique, and WM Moore Jewelers among them. Their creativity, craftsmanship, and kindness continue to make our community feel connected in the most meaningful ways. And in The Ripple Effect, the Greeley Chamber reminds us that when we choose to shop small, we’re investing in the very fabric of our hometown—supporting the people and programs that make Greeley thrive.
As we reflect on the past year, we’re filled with gratitude—for our partners who trust us to share their stories, for our readers who open these pages month after month, and for a city that continues to grow while holding onto its sense of heart and home.
This holiday season, we hope you find time to rest, to gather with those you love, and to celebrate the beauty of community. From our families to yours, thank you for being part of this journey with us.
Wishing you peace, joy, and a bright new year ahead,

CURL UP, SLOW DOWN, & DISCOVER FIVE HOLIDAY BOOKS THAT MAKE STORYTIME THE COZIEST TRADITION OF ALL
Stories by the Tree

PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREY CAT PHOTOGRAPHY
Daughters of Vanessa & Jeremy Jaime, Owners of Factor IV Hydration

The tree twinkles softly in the corner, pajamas are warm and worn-in, and the smell of cocoa lingers in the air. The room is hushed except for the rustle of pages as little hands turn them, eyes wide with wonder. This is storytime—the moment when the noise of the world gives way to the magic of imagination. For many families, reading together becomes a tradition that grows sweeter each year. Whether it’s a favorite book read on Christmas Eve or a stack of stories shared throughout December, gathering to read slows time, invites closeness, and fills the season with meaning. In a world that often feels hurried, reading offers a pause—a moment to reconnect, reflect, and remember what matters most.

1. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
By Clement C. Moore
No holiday reading list is complete without this beloved classic. Written two centuries ago, The Night Before Christmas remains the story that captures the anticipation and wonder of Christmas Eve. Its poetic rhythm and imagery—stockings hung with care, reindeer prancing on rooftops, the hush of the night before Santa’s arrival—spark excitement for both children and parents.
This story is best enjoyed in a beautifully illustrated edition that draws readers into its timeless magic. Families often make it their Christmas Eve ritual, reading by the glow of the tree before tucking little ones into bed. It’s a perfect bridge between imagination and tradition, setting the stage for dreams filled with sleigh bells and snow.

2. CHRISTMAS IN THE MANGER
By Nola Buck, illustrated by Felicia Bond
Gentle, simple, and heartfelt, Christmas in the Manger introduces the nativity story to even the youngest listeners. Told through soft, rhythmic language, each page highlights a figure from the stable— Mary, Joseph, the animals, and baby Jesus—building toward the peaceful moment of His birth.
Felicia Bond’s cozy illustrations, paired with padded board pages made for tiny hands, make this book ideal for toddlers and preschoolers. Parents love how it keeps the message of Christmas easy to understand without losing its reverence. It’s the perfect bedtime read on quiet winter nights, offering a few moments of calm amid the excitement of the season.
3. A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS
By Charles M. Schulz
This classic adaptation of the beloved television special continues to resonate with every generation. When Charlie Brown searches for meaning beyond the sparkle and shopping, he learns that the beauty of Christmas comes from love, kindness, and togetherness.
The simple message of A Charlie Brown Christmas endures because it speaks to both children and adults—the reminder that joy isn’t found in what we buy, but in how we care for one another. It’s a beautiful read-aloud choice for families with children four and up, sparking conversations about empathy, gratitude, and giving. Reading it beside a small, slightly lopsided tree might even make the moment that much sweeter.
4. TAMALES FOR CHRISTMAS
By Gabriela Tijerina
Few holiday traditions capture the spirit of family quite like making tamales together. Tamales for Christmas brings this cherished Mexican-American custom to life with warmth and color. As a family gathers in the kitchen to spread masa, wrap husks, and steam the tamales, laughter fills the air and stories are passed from one generation to the next.
Vivid illustrations bring the smells, sounds, and love of the kitchen to life, reminding readers that every culture celebrates Christmas in its own beautiful way. Perfect for preschoolers, it’s a story that highlights togetherness and tradition while honoring cultural roots—an inviting reminder that the holidays are about connection, not perfection.
The Rascon Brothers
5. PICK A PINE TREE
By Patricia Toht, illustrated by Jarvis
A joyful ode to one of the season’s most beloved rituals, Pick a Pine Tree captures the excitement of choosing, decorating, and celebrating around the Christmas tree. Through playful rhymes and vivid illustrations, readers follow families as they bundle up, bring home their perfect tree, and transform it with ornaments, tinsel, and lights.
What makes this story stand out is how it mirrors real-life family moments—the tangled lights, the laughter, the way everyone gathers to admire the finished masterpiece. Its rhythm makes it fun to read aloud, while the cozy illustrations give readers that same feeling they get when the final ornament is hung and the lights glow for the first time.
A COZY TRADITION WORTH KEEPING
The beauty of holiday storytime lies in its simplicity. Create a reading nook near the tree, gather everyone in pajamas, and let the glow of twinkle lights set the tone. Wrap a few books and let your children choose one to unwrap each night—it turns reading into an event they’ll look forward to all month long.
Whether your children are babies just discovering the joy of turning pages or early readers eager to help with the words, these stories offer laughter, faith, and warmth—the kind of magic that lasts long after the wrapping paper is gone.
Because years from now, your kids may forget the gifts under the tree—but they’ll never forget the stories read beside it.

WRAPPED IN KINDNESS
Norfolk Iron & Metal Shows How Teamwork and Generosity Can Make a Lasting Difference Year-Round

Each December, the halls of Norfolk Iron & Metal fill with the sounds of laughter, wrapping paper, and the unmistakable spirit of giving. What began as a simple desire to give back has become a cherished company tradition—one that brings their entire team together to make the holidays brighter for local families in need.
Partnering with Alpine Staffing, Norfolk Iron & Metal helps identify families who could use a little extra joy during the season. From there, the team goes to work—collecting wish lists, organizing donations, and transforming their workspace into a cheerful hub of generosity. Employees pitch in with everything from shopping for gifts to wrapping
Jim Florence, Mackenzie Smith, Jim Casper, Wendy Braswell, and Diane Hutchison
presents and delivering them to Alpine Staffing, where the families are invited to pick up their gifts.
On that day, the Norfolk team gets to meet the families face-to-face—a moment that brings the entire effort full circle.
“It’s deeply fulfilling for everyone involved,” shares Diane Hutchison, HR Manager at Norfolk
Iron & Metal. “Our employees are motivated by the joy that comes from making a difference. Seeing the gratitude and happiness of the families we adopt reminds us why this tradition matters so much.”
For the Norfolk team, this effort goes beyond charity—it’s about connection. Many employees say their favorite moments come when they have

the chance to meet the families in person. There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s eyes light up with joy or hearing a parent’s heartfelt thank-you. Those glimpses of gratitude stay with the team long after the holidays have passed, serving as a reminder of the difference kindness can make.
The company’s partnership with Alpine Staffing has also strengthened its ties to the community. Together, they combine resources and relationships to create a more organized, impactful outreach program—one that reflects the values both organizations share.
But Norfolk’s commitment to giving doesn’t end when the decorations come down. The team continues to support local causes yearround, sponsoring community events and contributing to organizations like the Greeley Stampede, Weld Food Bank, and Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity.
For Norfolk Iron & Metal, generosity isn’t just a holiday tradition—it’s a reflection of who they are every day of the year: a company powered by people, compassion, and the belief that even small acts of kindness can spark lasting change.

CELEBRATING CARRIE’S CAUSE
A FAMILY KEEPS A BELOVED HOLIDAY TRADITION ALIVE
ARTICLE BY DANA OLSON

What began as an affinity for poinsettias turned into an outreach that spans multiple states and makes an immeasurable impact on the hearts of many.
(L-R) Taylor & Ashley Accardi, Todd & Lisa Maul, Brianna Brienza, Austin Maul, Alex Maul. (Todd’s grandkids) Kida Yalacki, Blaize, Ryke, Jaxsun & Lexie Maul.
Todd Maul met his second wife, Carrie, in 2006 after Thanksgiving. While waiting for her to get ready for their first date, he noticed several small plants of the same variety scattered throughout her apartment. Upon his inquiry, she informed him that they were poinsettias, and much to his surprise, they existed outside of the holiday season—at least for Carrie, they did.
After marrying in 2007, Carrie and Todd found themselves with extra time on their hands one holiday season while Todd took a year off from his career. With a heart for the elderly, Carrie located a local low-income nursing home and decided to share her passion for poinsettias with its residents, scouring numerous stores for the perfect poinsettias. Enlisting the help of Todd and his three sons, she furnished them with Santa hats and set out to deliver 80 poinsettias to the unsuspecting, soonto-be delighted residents. The boys were less than thrilled, but upon discovering that their time would count toward volunteer requirements at their school, they quickly changed their opinion, happily signing on to do the same the following year.
By the third year, Carrie had become ill with kidney cancer and was unable to fulfill her mission. Todd’s middle son, Andy, chose to continue the tradition on his own, giving it the name “Carrie’s Cause.” Sadly, Carrie lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Andy gave life to the poinsettia project by suggesting they start a charity to carry on the joy-giving tradition.
To this day, Carrie’s memory and legacy live through her namesake cause, while thousands of poinsettias are personally delivered to the residents of numerous nursing homes in several states. Through this tradition, Todd and his growing family spread abundant joy while embracing the holiday’s deeper meaning. Todd is grateful to his partners in the John Elway Dealership Group for standing beside him each year with both volunteers and financial support for Carrie’s Cause.

“The thing about this charity is it’s joy—it spreads joy.”

THE Ripple Effect
EVERY DOLLAR STRENGTHENS GREELEY
ARTICLE BY MACY KOVARIK - DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, GREELEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
This holiday season, think of your purchases as more than presents—they’re investments in the place we call home. When you buy from a Greeley shop, café, or maker, that dollar doesn’t leave town; it begins a journey that supports neighbors, creates jobs, and funds the community programs that make our holidays possible. This is the magic of shopping local: every dollar you spend creates ripples that echo far beyond the checkout counter.
In Greeley, where small businesses are the heartbeat of our economy, that impact is profound. Northern Colorado’s retail sector has shown remarkable resilience amid national uncertainties, with local shops adapting and growing despite headwinds. But the real power lies in the “multiplier effect”—the way money recirculates locally. On average, 48 percent of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14 percent of purchases at chain stores.
These aren’t abstract numbers; they’re stories etched into our streets. That latte at your favorite local coffee shop might pay a barista who then buys a handcrafted gift from a local boutique. That sale helps the owner cover payroll, which puts money into the pockets of employees who dine, shop, and pay bills locally. The boutique owner, in turn, hires a local printer for gift tags, a nearby accountant for taxes, and donates to a holiday drive. After all, small businesses make up to 136% more charitable donations per employee than businesses with 500 or more employees.
As we head into the holiday season, let’s lean into this ripple. Shop the makers and merchants who live here, employ your neighbors, and reinvest in Greeley’s future. Your support is an investment in the Greeley we love. Dive into the Greeley Area Chamber of Commerce’s business directory at Business.GreeleyChamber.com/List

HOME STARTS HERE WITH The Weld Trust

LEADING WELD COUNTY’S COLLABORATIVE EFFORT IN HOMELESS PREVENTION
ARTICLE BY MEAGAN BIRELY, COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST AT THE WELD TRUST

Jess, a single mom of three living in Greeley, was working her dream job as a surgical massage technician. When her commission-based work slowed, her income took a sharp drop. She faced an impossible choice - buy food or pay rent. Falling behind on her rent payment became inevitable.
Jess turned to Catholic Charities for help while seeking a new, full-time job at Vestas, the wind turbine manufacturing facility in Windsor. After a review of her finances and employment prospects, she qualified for short-term financial assistance. With funding from The Weld Trust, Catholic Charities covered her past-due rent and gave her the breathing room she needed to get back on her feet.
Situations like Jess’ are becoming increasingly common. In Weld County 32% of residents have reported being “cost burdened”, meaning they pay more than 30% of their income on housing.
“A lot of times that’s what it is – working but rent is going up. Wages just aren’t keeping pace with rental prices,” Steve McLaughlin with Catholic Charites said.
Recognizing this growing challenge in the community, The Weld Trust drew up a Proactive grant to bring together several trusted agencies across Weld County that have like-minded homeless prevention services. The collaboration includes Catholic Charities, Hope at Miracle House, Almost Home and Greeley Family House.
“Proactive grants are a boots-on-the-ground approach to identify community needs and bring together the best agencies to tackle the problem,” said The Weld Trust’s Chief Executive
Officer Jeff Carlson. “This model allows The Weld Trust to play a more active role in solving complex community issues.”
The Weld Trust granted these agencies $1.4 million over a two-year period to share resources and dollars to effectively and efficiently serve families at risk of homelessness throughout Weld County.
“Having other partners just to help with the lift is huge,” McLaughlin said. “We couldn’t serve as many as we do. Having the extra bandwidth has been a blessing.”
Most families served by the collaborative partners are at risk of homelessness due to a short-term hurdle in expenses. Rental assistance, along with connection to case management and mentoring can ensure the families remain housed in most cases.
Through September, 268 households have been helped through this grant. These households accounted for 529 individuals including 286 children.
Keeping people housed not only reduces trauma and anxiety, especially in children, it’s cost-effective. It can cost three times more to rehouse a person than to prevent eviction, once you factor in new deposits, first and last month’s rent, and moving expenses.
“We have been able to help a lot of families,” Deb DeMille the executive director of Hope at Miracle House said. “The Weld Trust doing this Proactive grant for our agency and the families is amazing. We saved an 88-year-old woman from being evicted and she said, ‘no one cares.’ And I told her ‘We care.’”

Lights of Hope Shine Bright
Hembree Window Cleaning Blends Year-Round Service & Holiday Joy
Holiday lights have a way of transforming a season. For many families, it’s the joy of pulling up to a glowing home or watching children’s faces light up when the switch is flipped. Hembree Window Cleaning, founded by Mason Hembree, helps make those moments possible—not just in December, but all year long.
Best known for window cleaning and exterior services, the company also provides pressure washing, screen repair, gutter cleaning, and even high-rise work. Over time, seasonal holiday light installations became one of their most popular offerings. As requests grew for a solution that didn’t need to be taken down each January, Mason and his team began offering permanent holiday lighting. Weather-resistant and customizable, the lights allow homeowners to celebrate every season— Christmas, the Fourth of July, or even birthdays.

Lights of Hope Project

But Mason’s vision goes beyond business. Having faced financial hardship with a young daughter, he knew the holidays could be tough—and from that came the Lights of
Hope Project, an annual initiative that brings free holiday light installations to families in need.
The project began last year as a simple Facebook post asking for nominations.
One of the first installations was for a young single mother of three who had recently moved into a new home. When the lights were finished, she walked the yard with her children, taking it all in. Her youngest suddenly shouted with pure joy, “Santa will see us this year!” For Mason, that small but powerful moment said everything. The lights weren’t just about decoration—they were about restoring hope, creating memories, and letting a family know they were seen and cared for.
Since then, the project has grown into a community-wide effort. Through partnerships with Holiday Bright Lights, Novelty Lights, and Be the Good Ones, Hembree Window Cleaning has expanded its reach to serve more families. This season, a portion of every service—5% or more from October 31 through December 25—will go directly toward Lights of Hope. For every installation, the company also pledges additional lights or funding to keep the project strong.

Community members can get involved by supporting Hembree Window Cleaning, donating directly, or nominating a family at LightsofHopeProject.com. Volunteers and local businesses are also invited to join as sponsor companies, contributing proceeds or installation labor.

For Mason and his team, it’s about more than lights—it’s about bringing joy, hope, and belonging to families who need it most. To learn more or schedule a service, visit HembreeWindowCleaning.com.
INSIDE THE LOCAL RESOURCE CENTER CHANGING LIVES ONE VETERAN AT A TIME

NO ONE FORGOTTEN
NCVRC Staff Matt Hill, Director, Trevor, Navy Veteran Intern, & Hannah, Operations Officer/ Navigator
Across Northern Colorado, there are men and women who once wore our nation’s uniform—who trained, served, and sacrificed— but now face the challenge of rebuilding life after service. For some, that means finding stable housing or work. For others, it’s reconnecting with a sense of purpose or community. Whatever the need, the Northern Colorado Veterans Resource Center (NCVRC) is there to help them find their footing again.
“Our mission is to be the home and support for veterans and their families who need assistance,” says Matt Hill, Director of the Northern Colorado Veterans Resource Center. “We provide personalized support to help veterans achieve stability, self-sufficiency, and overall well-being.”
What makes NCVRC different is the way they approach every person who walks through their doors. There’s no checklist or one-size-fits-all program. The staff takes time to sit down, listen, and understand each story. Some veterans arrive in crisis, others simply need guidance—but every single one is treated with respect, patience, and genuine care.
A LIFE CHANGED FOREVER
Not long ago, an elderly veteran walked into NCVRC, unsure what to expect but hoping this time might be different. Living on a fixed income, he’d reached a point where he could no longer afford his rent, even with partial help from a VA housing program. His case manager referred him to the Resource Center for emergency financial support—just enough to stay housed while he tried to get back on his feet.
During his intake, staff learned that despite years of serious health problems, he wasn’t receiving any disability benefits from the VA. That didn’t sit right. As they looked closer, they discovered he had served on a base where chemical weapons were stored and destroyed during the Cold War—exposure that should have qualified him for assistance long ago.
The team quickly connected him with Veteran Service Officers to begin a claim and helped gather the evidence needed to prove his case. In the meantime, NCVRC covered his rent so he wouldn’t lose his apartment.
Within months, his claim was approved and expedited, increasing his income and giving him the stability he hadn’t felt in years.
What started as a simple request for one-time help turned into something far greater—a chance for this veteran to live out his later years with dignity and peace of mind. “It’s a powerful reminder of how much difference one connection can make,” Hill says.
Stories like his are why NCVRC exists. Every day, they help veterans untangle complex systems, access benefits they’ve earned, and rebuild their lives. It’s not flashy work—it’s quiet, consistent, and deeply meaningful.
A CALL TO THE COMMUNITY
The Northern Colorado Veterans Resource Center runs on generosity. Without community donations, the life-changing assistance they provide simply wouldn’t be possible.
AS WE HEAD INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON, THIS IS A TIME TO REMEMBER THE PEOPLE WHO GAVE SO MUCH FOR OUR COUNTRY. COMMUNITY DONATIONS ARE THE ONLY REASON WE’RE ABLE TO CONTINUE PROVIDING LIFECHANGING ASSISTANCE.
— MATT HILL, DIRECTOR OF NCVRC
“As we head into the holiday season, this is a time to remember the people who gave so much for our country,” Hill says. “Community donations are the only reason we’re able to continue providing life-changing assistance.”
This year, the organization will participate in Colorado Gives Day on December 9, a statewide campaign that encourages Coloradans to give where they live. Every contribution—large or small—goes directly to programs that help veterans secure housing, access healthcare, find employment, and regain stability.
For those looking to get more involved, NCVRC is launching a new Ambassador Program in early 2026, giving community members a chance to represent and advocate for veterans across Northern Colorado. Volunteers are also needed throughout the year for events such as the “One Is Too Many” Suicide Awareness 5K, an upcoming car show, and the annual gala.
Supporting NCVRC is more than a donation—it’s a promise that those who served our country will never be left behind. Every dollar and every hour given goes directly toward restoring hope for local veterans and their families.
Because at the Northern Colorado Veterans Resource Center, no one is ever treated like a case number or a problem to solve. They are neighbors, heroes, and family—and this community stands ready to serve them in return.
