Thank You to the Women in my Life

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize women in my life who make life more rich and beautiful. Our mothers, daughters, and grandmothers and are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable.

This month, I am especially grateful for my Mother.  One of the most important things she taught me was that there are seasons in life.  There are seasons to be home with little ones.  There are seasons to be out serving those around us.  There are seasons to take care of family and friends that need us.  There are seasons to look inward and heal our hearts and souls.  She taught me to embrace whatever season I am in, and know that the season is temporary and someday we will move to the next season.  But to always remember that where ever we find ourselves as women, we must be grateful and find the good that exists.    Right now, I find myself in this wonderful community of Greeley full of strong, beautiful women for which I am so grateful.   I am amazed at the brave women that are building businesses, leading non profits, or staying home and creating loving homes for the next generation of leaders.

This month is the perfect time to patronize those businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Greeley's women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Sincerely yours,

May 2023

Setting Stampede FASHION TRENDS

Cowgirls everywhere are digging their boots out, dusting their hats off, and shopping at the best local boutiques, to prepare for Greeley’s biggest rodeo event of the year.

The Greeley Stampede is known for bringing people and communities together in many ways with western fashion being one of them. In honor of this year’s event, Tina Martinez, Senior Marketing Executive, Brand Partnerships for iHeartMedia/BIG 97.9, organized a collaboration between the Greeley Lifestyle and Windsor City Lifestyle magazines and the best local boutiques to style models and showcase this year's Greeley Stampede fashion trends. “The Greeley Stampede is the place to be seen each summer,” Martinez said.

To help highlight this year’s Stampede fashion, Martinez partnered with Tara Rasmuson, owner and publisher of the Greeley Lifestyle magazine and Misty Dockins, owner and publisher of the Windsor City Lifestyle magazine to help bring this year’s project to life. “We wanted to pick a couple of boutiques from around the area, and highlight rodeo and concert fashion."

The photoshoot for the Stampede fashion collaboration was hosted at Greeley Hat Works, which is another staple to the Greeley community. “Anyone wearing a hat at the Stampede is wearing Greeley Hat Works,” Martinez said. “Greeley Hat Works is a staple partner in everything at the Greeley Stampede.” Boutiques and models for the shoot were selected by each project lead: iHeartMedia, Greeley Lifestyle, Windsor City Lifestyle and Greeley Hat Works.

Emilie Casseday, owner of Blush Boutique, modeled a linen dress with a classic jean jacket perfect for attending the rodeo or concerts. She styled Ashley Joy Lamar in a short gold sequin tiered dress, to wear to a Stampede concert. She also styled Tara Rasmuson in a lightweight black dress with a bralette for a classic rodeo look that could double for a concert outfit or a Stampede dinner function. “That’s what makes the rodeo so fun, you can wear a classic piece and it’s always going to be in style,” Casseday said.

Linda Winter, owner of Accessories with a Flair… and Hair!, opted for a western print poncho paired with black gauchos. She styled Teresa Stephens and Elizabeth Leos, Stampede Committee wives, in versatile outfits for any Stampede event. Stephens wore a short black dress, accented with southwest print on the bottom and sleeve cuffs, while Leos wore a black studded fringe mini-skirt paired with a black fringe suede jacket. Winter chose a traditional western outfit for model Deanna K Swetzig, who wore fringe leggings with a green lace tunic. “Any outfit can look western with the right accessories,” Winter said. “We have hundreds of pieces to make you look western chic for the Stampede.”

Megan Sitzman, owner of Country Glitz Boutique modeled classic flare jeans with a black lace bodysuit, accessorized with chunky jewelry and a belt. She styled Misty Dockins in a short long-sleeve denim dress, accessorized with a turquoise belt. Sitzman opted for a bolder look styling Lidia Varela, internal marketing and events coordinator for High Country Beverage, in a burnt orange long-sleeve minidress and a more traditional look for Christina Koder with RE/MAX Alliance, Windsor, in a white lace sundress accented by a bralette. “I am loving the high waisted shorts or bell bottom jeans this year,” Sitzman said. “Even though I’m a mom, I still really encourage people to go out there and try the crop tops—you can always dress it up with a tie or belt.”

Kaeleen Lane, owner of Coast-to-Coast Styles, styled Tina Martinez in bold snake print flare jeans with a fringe black jacket and long red earrings. She also styled Jasmyn Walker, Stampede Committee wife, in a chic floral print ruched dress with a high slit. Lane modeled a classic rodeo look pairing two-toned flare jeans with a white lace top accessorized with turquoise jewelry. “A good flare jean and a classic concert tee are staples in rodeo fashion,” Lane said. “But you have to accessorize with a hat.”

A hat is the finishing touch to any rodeo outfit that really brings the outfit together. “The hat is an extension of your personality,” Trent Johnson, owner of Greeley Hat Works said. “Everybody looks good in a hat, but you have to find the right hat.” The hat in terms of the Greeley stampede represents the western way of life that is deeply rooted in Greeley culture. “It’s a sense of pride, heritage, and appreciation for the American west and Greeley is the mecca of the west,” Johnson said.

The Stampede is hosting their 101st season celebrating western heritage and northern Colorado communities. “It’s fun and it’s all about tradition and bringing all of the communities together,” Martinez said. What started as just a small rodeo over a century ago, has evolved into an annual tradition for community, family, fun, and of course fashion.

“For the carnival, I wear something that’s okay to get a little dirty running around with my kids. I like to wear jumpsuits that have a little country flair, so I’ll put my hair in pigtails, accessorize with cute jewelry, and wear some tennis shoes.”

“When dressing for the rodeo, glitz and bling is always good. I have been a sponsor of Miss Rodeo Colorado for 21 years… They wear my extensions because it’s all about the big hair.”

“What people don’t realize is there is a difference between a cowboy hat and a western hat. A western hat is inspired by the west—Americana. The thing about a cowboy hat, think “what would a cowboy wear?” that’s a cowboy hat.”

Owner of Coast-to-Coast Styles, Windsor

“To dress for a concert, the cut tops are really in. Bling it up with chunky jewelry, and pair it with a great hat...I started at the Stampede nine years ago with a little booth, now growing into two stores has been amazing.”

“For this year’s trends, fringe and concert vintage tees are coming back. Booties were all the rage and now it’s all about the knee-high boots. Turquoise will never go out of style—it adds flair.”

YVETTE LUCERO-NGUYEN

DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR WOMEN’S AND GENDER EQUITY, STRYKER INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN COLORADO

Q: How did you get to where you are?

A: By the path built for me by my ancestors and my parents’ constant support. My husband, Thai, has been a part of my life’s journey for almost 25 years. Together, we raise our children, Mateo (2) and Olivia (10), to carry out the values we have as a bi-racial and bi-ethnic home.

Q: How do you overcome challenges?

A: I lean on my family and faith. My grandpa would say, “un dia a la vez,” which means take one day at a time, and my mom lived it and believed it. I remind myself that things take time and all I can do is take one day and one moment at a time.

Q: What is your “recipe” for success?

A: I feel that I am most successful when I am experiencing joy in whatever I am doing. Life is meant to be an experience we find joy in every day. My recipe… seek to experience a moment of joy every single day of your life.

Q: Which recipe did you bring today and why?

A: I wanted to share my favorite recipe that I enjoy making often for my family and is unique to my culture growing up in Roswell, NM—Mexican style green enchiladas.

NEW MEXICAN GREEN CHILI ENCHILADAS

Directions: Brown 1lb. ground hamburger. Add ¼ cup chopped onion and 1 tablespoon garlic powder and salt to taste. After meat is cooked, add 4 cups water and 1 cup diced green chilis. Bring to simmer for 5 minutes, salt to taste. In a skillet, fry corn tortillas until soft, stack them to the side. To assemble, place one tortilla on a plate, spoon desired amount of meat, add cheese and diced onion. Repeat stacking of tortillas and toppings as desired. Finally, add a fried egg on the top layer and enjoy!

AIMEE HUTSON

OWNER/OPERATOR, AUNT HELEN’S COFFEE HOUSE

Q: How did you get to where you are?

A: After multiple careers and raising kids, I felt the need to leave a legacy for my family and honor my Aunt Helen, who had a positive impact on my life. She was ahead of her time as an independent strong woman which I always admired! My husband, who told me “no” for several years, finally gave in and jumped in head first to help me.

Q: What is your recipe for success?

A: “Drive fast and take chances.” Life moves quick, so I try keep up with trends and stay in the moment as well as just going for it! If I try something and it doesn’t work, I’ll try something different!

Q: Which recipe did you bring today and why?

A: My Aunt Helen’s “Cheese Pie” recipe. I brought this recipe because it is an easy and quick go to dessert that my Aunt Helen used to always make. It is gluten free and easily adaptable to be keto friendly! It brings back many memories of my childhood and spending time with my Aunt Helen!

AUNT HELEN’S CHEESE PIE

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Beat two 8 oz. packages room temperature cream cheese very well. Add 3 room temperature eggs, one at a time. Beat well after each. Add 2/3 cup of sugar and 1/8 teaspoon almond extract. Lightly grease 9 or 10 inch Pyrex pan and add mixture. Bake 45 minutes at 325. Remove from oven. Cool on rack for 15 minutes. While cooling, mix 2 cups sour cream with 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla. After the 15 minutes, top pie with this mixture and decorate center with nuts. Return to oven for 5 minutes at 325. Cool and refrigerate.

LORI GAMA

OWNER/FOUNDER, DAGAMA DIGITAL MARKETING

Q: How do you balance your career, personal life, and hobbies?

A:  I couldn’t do this without my team. Most of all, I’m blessed to be married to Michael Gabriel.

Q: How do you overcome challenges?

A: My mother Loretta taught me to have faith that challenges and hardships will all work out in God’s time. After my dad passed away from cancer when I was 13, my grandma Faye helped my mom raise my sisters and me. After my son was born, I grew more determined to succeed to give him a better life than I’ve had the privilege of enjoying.

Q: What is your recipe for success?

A: Love is the main ingredient in my life. I can achieve things that seem impossible with focus, hard work, love, faith and believing in myself.

Q: Which recipe did you bring today and why?

A:  When I moved to Greeley in 1981, my mother gave me her 1961 edition of a Betty Crocker cookbook which is a reminder of my roots and the strong women who raised me. Inside of it is a handwritten recipe for my grandmother’s Pineapple Bars--one her favorite sweets.

PINEAPPLE BARS

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. To make the filling, combine 6 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, 4 ½ teaspoons corn starch, 1 ½ cup crushed pineapple, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Simmer until thick. Cool. Then, make the crust by combining 1 ½ cup sifted flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ cup chopped nuts, 2 ½ cup brown sugar, 2 ½ cup oatmeal. Mix then add 1 cup melted butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well. Press half the crust mixture into greased 9x13- inch baking pan. Spread with filling. Add remaining crust mixture; pat well. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Cool. Cut into bars.

DEIRDRE PILCH

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, GREELEYEVANS SCHOOL DISTRICT 6

Q: How did you get to where you are?

A: By following my personal mission and beliefs. I have worked hard and had wonderful mentors and colleagues. Remarkable women have lifted me up, advised me and encouraged me- my mom, my grandmother, my niece, my sister, my high school drama and English teachers, and a couple of my college professors. My husband has been my rock— especially in this complex role as superintendent.

Q: How do you overcome challenges and what is your recipe for success?

A: I lean into my faith and family. The words I live by: Do as much as you can, for as many as you can, for as long as you can. I am also deeply committed to continuing doing what I love and making a difference.

Q: Which recipe did you bring today and why?

A: My mom and grandmother’s cream of potato soup recipe. This is true comfort food!

MOM’S AND GRANDMA’S CREAM OF POTATO SOUP

Directions: Peel and cube five medium red potatoes, dice one whole medium white onion, chop three celery stalks. Bring potatoes, onion, half stick of butter to rapid boil for 5 minutes—Add celery. In another large pot, slowly add 7 cups of whole milk to warm. Do not add milk all at once and do not boil. Add another half stick of butter. Once the milk is warm, (you’ll know because the butter will have melted), add 1 cup warm water with potatoes, onions, and celery. Stir in 1 pint of heavy whipping cream. Slowly add remaining butter and if you want a thicker soup, mix 1 cup cold milk and 1 teaspoon of cornstarch—I always do this. Add a pinch of cumin, a pinch garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste. You can garnish with shredded cheddar cheese, bacon crumbles, and chopped green onion. This is what my Irish grandmother added. Enjoy!

At the root of what I do, I believe a home is not just bricks and mortar. Our home represents our dreams, our comfort, our safety, our gathering place. It literally houses our goals, our retirement, and our pursuit of the American dream. A house is the center of our collective lives, whether it is the house we call our home or a property we own as an investment.

Whether you are buying your first home, your forever home or an investment property, I look forward to working with you.

Build Your Own Gallery Wall

We believe there are no “rules” to creating a great gallery wall. Simply find something that inspires you and get moving. As proud Greeley natives, we knew we wanted local flare included in our interior redesign. Inspiration struck in the pages of the June 2022 edition of this magazine featuring the 100th Anniversary of the Greeley Stampede.

Design Makeover at The Cow Saloon and Eatery

Supplies:

• Tape measure

• Picture frames

• Canva or any other design program

• Computer

• Printed photos

• Laser level with suction cup

• Pencil

• Hammer

• Picture hooks and nails

• Double-sided velcro

Directions:

Step 1: Choose your inspiration- for us it was cows and cowboys, but the sky’s the limit. We knew we wanted clean lines, with our logo front and center. We also had two photos, taken by local photographer Tiara Perez, we wanted featured. We combined those elements with our favorite photos from the past 100 years of the Stampede, and started to play with the final layout using the design program Canva. After creating a visual representation of the final product, we started shopping.

Step 2: Measure and plan- begin with finding the height and width of your space and reverse engineer from there. You’ll need to ask yourself how many frames—and in what dimensions—will fit in that space? We started by finding a large mirror we could add our logo to with vinyl. Once we knew the height of the mirror, we looked for two frames that were close to the same height. Those frames would house the photos from Tiara and flank the mirror. Next, we used a little simple math to determine how many 11x14 frames would fill the remaining space above and below those three featured pieces. Make sure you take durability into consideration. We looked for a plexiglass option for our high traffic space.

Step 3: Assemble and secure- all of our frames came with an assembly kit included. We measured a point on the back of each frame where the wall hook would

best align with the wire hanger, then marked each frame in order to ensure uniformity for placement on the wall. Once all frames were ready for hanging, the real fun began. We highly recommend a laser level with a suction cup for this step. We found the center point on our wall, and placed our logo mirror first. Then we measured out equal distances on both sides of the mirror for placement of the two large frames. We used the laser level to ensure proper height, marked those points with pencil, hammered in picture hooks and nails, then hung our frames.

Step 4: Enjoy! This project is one of our favorite things we’ve done in the past year. Our gallery wall helped create a design focal point, and has become a major conversation starter in our restaurant. People love it, and we love sharing a piece of Greeley history with our guests.

Pro Tip: Secure your frames with double-sided velcro. This will keep things level, and secure.

FROM RANCHERS TO REAL ESTATE

She spent a total of fifteen years in California, landing at Grubb & Ellis, a commercial real estate firm, in 2005. During that time, she gained experience in varying aspects of real estate including commercial sales, leasing and development. She believes the knowledge she gained at Grubb & Ellis molded her into a more well-rounded real estate agent, which she excitedly brought to Orr Land Company when she moved back in 2016.

SARAH WOODLAND’S JOURNEY BACK HOME

Sarah Woodland comes from a long line of ranchers. Her family owns a ranch near Granby that has been in her family since 1883. In the 1960s her grandfather started Orr Land Company in Denver. Her father then created a Greeley arm in the 80s, a legacy she is honored to be a part of. “Ranching is a lifestyle. Growing up in that world certainly gave me a deep respect for the land, and instilled in me a strong work ethic,” Sarah stated. The strong ties she and her family have developed position Orr Land Company into a close-knit and uniquely qualified real estate business.

While she has deep roots in the Greeley area - living here since she was 5 - Sarah decided she needed a change in temperature so she headed out to California for college to escape the cold. “We’d be out moving cattle and it would be freezing, long days. I promised myself I would move to a beach someday, so the second I was old enough, I moved to San Diego…” Sarah laughed,  “...my college criteria was how close campus was to the beach, and I lucked out that University of San Diego also ended up being a really good school.”

“The overall experience of leaving, seeing new places, of working for a large corporate firm, was the polar opposite of what I’m doing now. That molded me into a more balanced real estate professional,” she said.

Sarah believes her time away from home allowed her to observe how a corporate firm was running things, and bring some of those practices back on a smaller scale that works for a family business. “The opportunities available through my father and Orr Land Company, particularly with The Cache development, were opportunities I couldn’t pass up,” she said when asked why she moved back, also adding that the experiences she had in California have directly contributed to the success she’s had in her family-owned business.  Sarah splits her business roughly 50/50 between working with buyers and sellers which gives her the added benefit of understanding both sides of the current market. Her clients range from first-time home buyers to seasoned investors, but her goal always remains the same: enhance quality of life while being mindful of the bottom line.

Orr Land Company is the “go-to” for farms and ranches, though their brokers are also well versed in single family residential and commercial transactions. “There are a lot of nuances when it comes to buying and selling farms and ranches.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HOME SERVICES
40

It’s best to work with someone that understands those nuances,” Sarah said.

Sarah comes from a long line of ranchers and is next in line to take over the company when her father is ready to step down. “I really love what I do, and I appreciate the opportunity to take on the legacy that’s been established by my father, and grandfather before him. I’ll eventually carry the torch and that makes me really proud,” Sarah said.

If you’re in the market for an agricultural property, Sarah shared five things you should consider:

1. Water Rights

2. Mineral Rights

3. Access//Easements

4. Proximity to Utilities

5. Zoning Regulations

Orr Land Company is located at 1813 61st Ave. #200, Greeley, CO. 80634. More information can be found on their website, orrland.com, or by calling 970.351.8777.

Health is the New Wealth

Journey to Wellness with Kelly Preston, Owner of Sweet Be Wellness

Just three years out from the COVID-19 pandemic, many have come to understand the importance of overall health and well-being, and are on a mission to implement that into their daily lives. Kelley Preston, Owner of Sweet Be Wellness in Greeley, has made it her long-term mission to ensure that our community has the knowledge, and access, to experience wellness and mindfulness.

Sweet Be Wellness, established in November 2019, has paved a way in curating a holistic approach to health and wellness in Greeley. Offering more than the typical day spa services, you can submerge yourself in facials, massages, yoga, reiki, LED light therapy, infrared sauna, and a therapeutic salt room. Before launch, Preston aspired to bring a practice to the Greeley area that was encompassing of such services, as there were minimal options available within the community.

Preston’s goal is to bring more awareness to the importance of mind, body and spiritual well-being. Taking a more holistic approach, she has built a phenomenal team of experts in their respective fields, and offers clients wellness opportunities that include outer wellness while diving deeper into exploring the importance of inner well-being. “What I love most about my work is the connection I make with people,” Preston said. “The nerves of the face are very sensitive and can instantly calm our brain. Through the energetics of touch, clients can let down and let go in my space and feel safe doing so.” Through one-on-one sessions with her clients, Preston has found that many individuals are looking for a deeper understanding of what it means to connect to their inner selves to find a greater peace and balance in their lives.

Following their first six-week Meditation Retreat, Preston is thrilled to be in the process of offering more events that encompass yoga, reiki, and meditation to reach a more balanced and peaceful life. More recently, Preston has begun integrating a more tailored experience for each person, so that they may be able to implement these practices into their daily routines. “Every client has unique needs from their skin care to their yoga practice,” Preston said. "What makes us unique is our ability to customize every service to provide true transformation, inside and out.”

You can view all that Sweet Be Wellness has to offer on their website at sweetbewellness.com and book an appointment to experience all the amazing services that can assist you on your journey to ultimate well-being.

Upholding Values for 40 Years

THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF NORTHERN COLORADO AND WYOMING CELEBRATES THEIR 40TH ANNIVERSARY THIS MAY

In the 1980s Lisa Curtis saw a need for an organization to provide trust and insight on businesses in the Northern Colorado area. Curtis pursued this need until she established the Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Northern Colorado and Wyoming on May 17, 1983.

Today, the values established in 1983 continue to be upheld by the BBB as they celebrate 40 years of serving the community through ethics, trust and dedication. Since their founding, the BBB has operated on eight principles; building trust, advertising honestly, telling the truth, being transparent, honoring promises, being responsible, safeguarding privacy and embodying integrity.

The organization has been female-led since 1983 as they have served the community. “I have the honor to work with just really smart people, who are dedicated to our mission,” said Shelley Polansky, current president and CEO of the Northern Colorado and Wyoming

OUR TOWN | LIFE + CULTURE 46

BBB. Polansky and her team are dedicated to their mission of helping the community be familiar with the businesses they work with.

In addition to working with her team, Polansky also enjoys working with businesses and hearing their histories. “It's amazing how many generations of family leadership have gone into running and owning those businesses,” Polansky said. “So that, to me, is super fulfilling to get to hear their stories.”

As they have provided services to businesses, the BBB has adjusted their organization to best serve the public. They have done this throughout their history, from 1995 when they shifted from service by phone to an automated voice response system, to their development of the BBB Community Center under Polansky. The new community center offers a space for businesses to work and collaborate with the BBB.

As they engage with the community and businesses, the BBB also strives to honor these businesses. They do this through their annual Torch Awards for Ethics, in which they honor businesses who have upheld the BBB ethics. This year, they will celebrate the 25th year of the Torch Awards with their 40th anniversary of the organization on April 27th at the Embassy Suites in Loveland.

While the BBB has adjusted as the world has changed, they hold the same values as they did in 1983.

“The world has changed but our values haven't,” Polansky said. “So, even though our programs, products, services and technology have continued to evolve since our founding 40 years ago, what hasn't changed is our commitment to trust and ethics and our commitment to those sets of ethical frameworks.”
