So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. I feel fortunate everyday to call Greeley my home. And I am grateful for the community that has welcomed me and my family and made this home for us. We feel like the lucky ones as we have learned even more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood and most all of - your home. Brooklyn Finds Design Co Owner, Brooke Cole, is best known for her vintage home decor. Her Downtown Greeley shop is celebrating 3 years in 2023, and has expanded into the neighboring space with more home design gifts and vintage finds. “Being part of the downtown community is huge. I opened during Covid, and that was something that felt pretty big.” Brooke’s philosophy, faith over fear, is something she leads with and is experiencing again as she expands to doing more design work. Through this expansion, you’ll find more opportunities for her to come into your home and help you directly. This could include something as simple as a color consultation, new staging, or even a complete redesign. “I’ve stayed pretty

quiet about my design background, but now I’m ready to bring Brooklyn Finds into people’s homes!” As spring approaches, Brooke gave us some tips to refresh our space on a low budget. “I’m a big believer in ‘use-whatyou-have design,’” she stated. “A change in season doesn’t require a complete overhaul. Slight adjustments make all the difference.” She suggested we aim toward simplicity. “You want to welcome simplicity when welcoming spring. What can you do to bring the outdoors in?” 2023 is all about timeless elements - original woods, woven textiles, stoneware pottery - paired with bold statements like floral wallpaper and fresh plants or flowers. Tying antique or vintage goods with whites and punches of botanicals will help freshen up our spaces, while maintaining a relaxing haven. When you shop your home, you are able to focus on a mix of old and new. “The

‘use-what-you-have’ philosophy really brings that vintage element in. For example, you might use a stack of old books with a new vase of fresh flowers to lift your space. You want your home to tell a story without feeling like you have to go out and buy new things.” Brooke mentioned that a lot of times, we accumulate things we like but don’t know how to put it together. Selecting a few key pieces as a focal point will help create an inviting space, and focusing on the senses will add to that welcoming feel. FROM COOKING TO CANNING Designing a Kitchen Around Your Passion

Ten years ago, Logan and Ashley Richardson designed the house of their dreams, complete with a beautiful custom-built kitchen that not only allowed the family to entertain, but was also practical for Ashley’s canning hobby. When they started the path to designing their own kitchen, they wanted to make sure it would be functional for their lifestyle. They began by blocking off where they wanted things in the home they were already living in. This allowed them to walk around and get used to the space before anything was permanent. “A remodel is definitely in your future when you build your own house,” Ashley laughed. Even after designing what felt like the perfect space for their family, they decided to remodel the kitchen after about 8 years of living in it. “The version we had in our mind changed. After using things in the kitchen, we analyzed what options would work better for us.” During the remodel, Canning continued to be a major consideration, since this is something Ashley does frequently. The galley kitchen houses several elements that make it easier

for her. She included a pot filler, a six burner gas stove, and a lot of counter space which allows her to set all 24 cans out and make sure they cool and seal properly without being in the way of cooking. Additionally, they included a lot of space for overflow which makes it easier for her kids to help, and the sink is close to the stove which allows for easy cleanup. “My mom canned all the time while I was growing up and my dad had a beautiful garden so we always had fresh produce.” Ashley joked that she never wanted to do canning after watching her mom do it her whole life, but then she was invited to help one of her friends and ended up never stopping. Since then, she’s built out her own garden with eight garden boxes that provide a lot of produce for her family. Her dad has a huge apple orchard so she uses some of his harvest to make things like apple butter and applesauce. She also gets peaches and pears from the western slope or the farmer’s market. “I try to grow most of the produce I can. It’s nice to know exactly where your food is coming from, and you get to

decide when your fruit and vegetables are ripe enough so you get better flavor, not to mention my family loves eating it!” Ashley said she talks to everyone about canning but no one ever wants to do it! “It is a lot of work and can be very time consuming, but there’s something about providing for your family in this way - it’s very ancestral.” Once grocery stores became popular, canning was no longer a necessity, but Ashley thinks everyone should at least try it. Plus, with the rising food prices, it’s a good solution to cutting down on some of your expenses, and the equipment needed to get started is minimal. “All you really need aside from the ingredients are jars, lids and rings, a wide-mouth funnel (optional but incredibly helpful), tongs, and a water bath.” While the majority of the work goes into the actual preparation of the food, the canning process is fairly simple. After heating the lids and filling the jars with your ingredients, you wipe the edges to ensure nothing will be in the way of it properly sealing, place the lid and ring on, and place it into the hot water bath. The length of time will vary depending on your recipe. Once you remove the jars from the boiling water, the heat begins to escape, pulling down the lid and creating an airtight seal. This process heats the food hot enough to destroy bacteria that might grow, allowing you to store food longer. Canning is certainly not for everyone, but it is nice to be able to harvest your own garden and live off the supply for the year. It can be a lot of prep work and time, but it can also be extremely rewarding. It allows you to save money, know exactly what you are putting into your body, and can be a great outlet to spend time with your family and friends. Like Ashley Richardson said - everyone should try it at least once!

THE C O N F O R M AT E U R The conformateur, a French designed tool that dates back to the 1840’s, is used to measure the size and shape of a customer’s head for a truly custom fit. When placed on the head, a series of pins punch small holes in a card that give an exact outline of your head shape and size. To this day, there is no better way to get a custom fit, and it remains the best technology (or anti-technology) in hat making.

In doing so, many have to be creative in revitalizing old properties in order to break ground while aiming to be respectful to the environment and landscape in the process. Ryan Woodland of Woodland Home Company, (WHC) however, may have found one of the most unique ways to prepare an old Severance farm property for future development. “Rather than tearing apart the old farm, our company was looking for ways to rehabilitate the property as we look to start building,” shared Woodland. “When it came to the problem of how to

deal with the overgrowth of weeds on the property, we decided to take a different approach and turn to the goats.” That’s right - goats. For a few weeks, WHC was responsible for nearly 900 cashmere goats who would transform the landscape in an ecologically friendly manner, while feeding their own voracious appetites in the process. Cashmere goats have a unique biological design that allows them to feed on weeds and destroy their seeds in the process of digestion. Their feeding habits also allow for fresh seed to be pushed into the soil, which is then irrigated by the goats’ waste. The goats can be kept in smaller sections of land close together, which allows for them to “self clean” their precious wool, another valuable resource that the goats provide.

“It’s a friendly alternative to using chemicals, and that’s something that was important to us .” In addition to utilizing the goats, Woodland and his company also opened a reclaimed lumber business - Woodland Home Marketplace - to help repurpose old barn lumber and provide a top-tier barnwood material distributor for residents of Northern Colorado. In additional effort to reduce their impact on landfills and to promote a more recyclable business model, WHC has also donated and sold a wide variety of building materials, fence posts, and wires from the site. Their local business model is to provide quality and unique work in everything they do so that families can enjoy their dream home.

Movement and functionality are two of the primary keys for comfortable and successful navigation of our everyday lives. Most of us may not even realize the degree to which we use our bodies daily - anything from maneuvering through the twists and turns in the office; bending over to grab something at the grocery store; scooping up the kids in our arms after a long day; or even walking to the end of the driveway to check the mailbox. So, what happens when an accident, injury, or surgery causes us to lose that mobility and functionality? For Colorado, there’s been one premier healthcare provider for nearly 54 years. As the Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies (OCR) continues to expand its capabilities for care further into the Greeley market, it continues to reinforce a commitment to high-level care, recovery, and restoration to healthy living for residents on this side of the Rockies. “There’s something to be said about combining compassion with excellence in the way we serve each and every person that walks into our facilities,” proudly shares CEO Mike Bergerson, who has spent nearly 17 years with OCR. “When dealing with OCR, there should be nothing less than excellent care provided from the moment you pick up the phone to your final step outside of the facility after treatment.” Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies’ commitment to compassionate and high-quality treatment stems from its inception in 1969, when four Fort Collins physicians formed a lasting partnership under the name “Fort Collins Orthopaedic Associates.” While each came from diverse backgrounds, they were united by a desire to provide the highest quality orthopaedic care to patients and families in the region, while pioneering new standards in the realm of orthopaedic patient care. The practice continued to grow throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, allowing for the partnership to rebrand as “Orthopaedic and Spine Center of the Rockies” and move to its current location on East Prospect Road in Fort Collins (1990). OCR opened its Loveland office in 1985 and expanded to a larger building in 1997. In December of 2009, the final footprint of OCR Loveland was built, and as of 2019, OCR expanded its brand adding its Ambulatory Surgery & Recovery.

OCR opened its Greeley campus in 2016 to serve the growing number of residents in Greeley and communities in eastern Colorado. Now, with over 45 physicians providing care across 6 medical campus, including Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Longmont, Lafayette, and Westminster, OCR has nearly 750 employees, and an expanded network of care that includes Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and beyond. The OCR physicians and team are excited for their new Greeley facility, a brand-new, state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Care and Treatment Center, anticipated to open in May. Located in the Fox Run Development on the Northeast corner of 20th Street and 59th Avenue, this 46,934 square feet facility seeks to further seat OCR’s reputation as “Greeley’s Hometown Orthopaedic Group.” This specialized facility will lead to further opportunities for same-day appointments, increased capacity for patient care and volume, and will contain the foremost advancements in technology and medicine for casts, digital imaging, durable medical equipment (DME), physical therapy, x-rays, and more. “We’ve loved being a part of the Greeley community since we first moved here in 2016,” Bergerson affirms. “Our company had been talking about expanding in Greeley for 20-30 years before we were first able to move here, albeit in a smaller capacity than we first dreamed. With the construction of this facility, our chance to reach Greeley, the surrounding Weld County community, and even further out east has grown exponentially, and we couldn’t be more thankful and more thrilled for this opportunity to continue to build a strong relationship with the community and to give back.” The new facility’s size allows for minimized foot traffic congestion on-location, and increased building capacity allows for the addition of hand surgeons all while giving patients the ability to consult with any one of the eight physicians on-site at any given time. This not only builds off the limited space allowed in their current Greeley location, but also means that patients will no longer have to travel to reach facilities in Loveland or Fort Collins for more specialized care. “Weld County is displaying a large amount of growth, with more housing and more opportunities

for industries and employers to invest,” Bergerson reflects. “OCR has had a high value for the industries of Weld County for decades – whether that be the gas, oil, or agricultural fields – and has sought to serve and honor those patients well. Now, we have an opportunity to present people with an improved, special type of orthopaedic care here like never before.” While the Orthopaedic & Spine Center of Rockies is certainly well-known for their consistent commitment to the highest quality of care and treatment, it isn’t the only reason they’ve made a name for themselves in the Weld County community. Outside of medical care, commitment to their patients and to

OCR currently partners with and sponsors a wide variety of organizations and service projects in and around Weld County, including the Greeley Stampede, Weld County Food Bank, the Colorado Eagles, Partners Mentoring Youth, and the Women’s Fund of Weld County, just to name a few. CEO Mike Bergerson himself has served extensively with Partners Mentoring Youth and is on the board of Respite Care, which recently held their annual ball to raise over $639,000 to provide specialized care for kids and families in Northern Colorado. In constructing their new facility, OCR’s Leadership team - including Carli Taylor-Drake, Director of Marketing and Practice Development - has taken a

special approach to making sure design elements within the lobby and throughout the building represent Greeley’s rich history and diversity of industry opportunities. Previously built relationships with the University of Northern Colorado, who works with their current campus on 16th Street, will allow for a partnership with the university’s osteopathic medical school for student opportunities and training within the medical field in the new facility. OCR has proudly reported that even amidst the challenges and struggles, OCR remained open every day and served the community, and Bergerson attributes that to the special kind of people that it takes to work in healthcare. “It was truly because of our employees’ loyalty to their patients and their commitment to high level care that we were able to withstand the effects of COVID19 on our staff and on our culture,” Bergerson reflects. “And as we continue to grow, we welcome and embrace anyone from any background to come and display that level of commitment and loyalty and to join our team.” When the new Greeley facility for Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies opens in May 2024, they plan on hosting a community open house for people to come and witness for themselves the high standard of patient care and staff culture that OCR prides itself on. What initially began as a crisis line providing women the opportunity to call and seek assistance in 1978, A Woman’s Place has since transformed into a pillar in Weld County, providing safe haven and shelter for women, families and men experiencing Domestic Violence. With eight rooms and the ability to shelter up to eight families at once, A Woman’s Place helps victims of Domestic Violence recoup with safety planning and finding their footing in getting safely back into the community on their own. In 2021. A Woman’s Place received 950 crisis phone calls and helped serve 500 clients. With the successful help from the volunteer organization, Friends of a Woman’s Place, they continually receive donations to aid in helping provide necessities to those in the shelter, such as clothing, hygiene products and any other specific needs of the families or individuals. Bringing awareness of Domestic Violence and Mental Health is something Dani Souza, Outreach Coordinator, is very passionate about and holds near to her heart. Being a voice and face of A Woman’s Place is a rewarding opportunity for Souza and she aims to educate and bring to light the variations of domestic violence and the assistance that is available. After 45 years, A Woman’s Place continues to build their well-known presence in Weld County and has found many opportunities to help provide support.
