AT THE PEAK OF HEALTH The Best Juices and Foods for Little Ones With Dr. Alexia from Peake Wellness ARTICLE BY TAYLOR HENDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY DIANDRA

Alexia and her daughters make tasty juices

FAM ILY CA R E | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Dr. Alexia Inhulsen started Peake Wellness Center in 2010, and at the time, her space was a single-room office. Her initial patient was an employee at the practice, who was pregnant and experiencing discomfort. Balancing delicacy for her patient and a desire to provide pain relief, Dr. Alexia successfully gave an adjustment that sent the mother-to-be to her birth class with the urgings that everyone receives chiropractic care. Dr. Alexia’s success with her early patients cemented her interest in maternal and child care. While Peake Wellness’s

primary focus is on pregnant women and postpartum mothers with their children, they also treat men and couples working on fertility. As complex as chiropractic care and anatomy is, Dr. Alexia finds joy in the straightforward problem-solving of caring for kids. She says, “You either helped them with their ear infections, bed wetting, behavior issues, etc. or you didn’t!” Beyond adjustments, she likes teaching her patients about the links between their nervous system, their bones and muscles, and their overall health. Chiropractic care can help the whole body, not merely alleviate the pain that brought you into the office that particular day. Peake Wellness also takes an active role in its community. They hold events throughout the year to support and educate parents.

Dr. Alexia has also shared some tips for transitioning babies from smooth to solid foods. Her first step is to wait until babies can sit up on their own and until their tongue thrust is gone. This step, often skipped in American families, indicates that an infant’s digestive system is ready for solid foods. In terms of types of food, Dr. Alexia also recommends vegetables—one at a time—instead of fruit. Though fruit is sweeter, it can condition children to need that sweetness, whereas vegetables will acclimate their palates to healthy foods without requiring sugar. In her opinion, peas and green beans are “sweet enough and interesting enough already,” and they don’t require fruit additives like bananas. If you’re buying food for your child, make sure you 1) try it first and 2) check that there are as few added sweeteners (fruit or sugar) as possible. If you’re making

your own food, make sure to block out enough time each week to prepare your vegetables. One of the other enjoyable aspects of the transition time, according to Dr. Alexia, is the faces kids make when they try new foods. It’s a time of experimentation as parents figure out what their children do and don’t prefer. Three of Dr. Alexia’s favorite juicing recipes are the Basic, the Sunny, and the Green Machine—each of which has only 3 three ingredients! The Basic includes 8 carrots, 2 green apples, and a squirt of lemon; the Sunny contains ½ a pineapple, 2 yellow peppers, and the juice from half a lemon; while the Green Machine has 1 cucumber, 2 green apples, and a few leaves of kale or spinach. Her recommended appliance is a masticating juicer, which makes concoctions that will last 24 hours. If you don’t have access to one of those, though, a centrifuge juicer will make drinks that last 20 minutes before oxidizing. Whether you’re a couple seeking fertility counseling, a parent-to-be, a new mother, a single father, or someone with pain you can’t quite shake—trust Dr. Alexia to make you well again. Her knowledge base covers anatomy, nutrition, pregnancy, and post-birth care, and the best juices you or your child will ever drink! Add a stop to Peake Wellness to your New Year’s Resolution. If you want to create the best version of yourself for 2023, your surest path to success is prioritizing your health so that you can show up in all other areas of your life.

In the wake of a life-altering pandemic, many Americans are searching for a better way to approach their health and wellness. Prioritizing their personal and familial needs can feel overwhelming in a world of large healthcare corporations and a variety of obstacles for patients. For Sheree Montoya, those needs are what brought her practice to a rising place in Greeley’s healthcare market. “During the pandemic, there were a lot of people searching for primary care providers that weren’t able to be seen for weeks,” Montoya shared. “It gave us the opportunity to start fresh and see brand new patients, even if they were struggling with the effects of COVID-19.” Sheree was born and raised in Greeley until job opportunities in the medical field would bring her and her family down to Denver to work in healthcare. Starting as a nurse for a large healthcare system, she would eventually work her way up to becoming the Director of a Level 1 Trauma Center. When further advancement opportunities offered her a chance to move into the administrative role, she declined, insisting that she would rather stay by the bedside of patients and offer them comfort and personalized care. “I wanted an opportunity to spend time with patients, and build a personal connection with the people I was serving,” Sheree admitted when talking about what drew her back to Greeley. “I realized I didn’t want to stay in the giant corporate healthcare system and move up the administrative ladder - I wanted to be able to be with people.” It was that commitment to personalized, high-quality patient care that

allowed Sheree Montoya to move back up to Greeley. Shortly after, her team would open NOCO Healthcare Clinic in April 2021, now located in Greeley off of 10th and 35th Avenue. In addition to providing routine primary care and physicals for patients of all shapes and sizes, NOCO Healthcare also delves into the realm of newer advancements in wellness and patient care. One of these practices is through the administration of IV Therapy, an up-and-coming and integrative approach to personal wellness and wholeness. “Our goal is to become more proactive, rather than reactive, to people’s health and well-being using techniques like IV Therapy,” shares Montoya. “If we can provide people with an opportunity to stay healthy and avoid visits to the ER, then we’re accomplishing our goals.” IV Therapy has become somewhat of a recent phenomenon in the healthcare realm in America, allowing patients to explore meeting a variety of needs and medical treatments through the administration of an IV, rather than through a pill or other form of medication. During the pandemic, it proved particularly useful in providing monochlonal antibodies - man-made proteins that stimulate the immune system - for people struggling with the symptoms and effects of COVID-19. Now, in addition to increasing prevention during cold and flu season, IV therapy can also be used in high blood pressure and diabetes care; aid athletes in their recovery processes; and can be used to provide energy and promote overall wellness in all forms of patients. In addition to IV Therapy, NOCO Healthcare Clinic also provides specialized care for joint injections and hormone therapy, both of which are advantageous in promoting sustainable health and wellness for individuals in the Northern Colorado area. But it isn’t just about providing healthcare services for the community, either. Montoya shared that her team has been excited to partner with local organizations and give back to the Greeley community in other ways as well.

Sheree Montoya

Sheree Montoya explains the benefits, and options for IV Therapy

“Our goal is to become more proactive, rather than reactive, to people’s health and well-being using techniques like IV Therapy.”

“Right now we are working with sponsoring a Give Tree to support kids in our community and to provide gifts this holiday season,” she shared. “We have also taken part regularly in Weld County Diaper Bank’s Diaper Handout, and have sent a variety of teams out into the community to participate in other acts of service.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Whether the serving opportunity is medical or focused on the community, Sheree and her team will always pride themselves on offering convenient, affordable, and trustworthy healthcare to support Northern Coloradans - a value they affirm on their website. Rather than rely on the marketing afforded by larger healthcare corporations, she believes that her quality of care and the word-ofmouth of her patients will continue to provide further opportunities for NOCO Healthcare Clinic to grow.

“We do what we do because we enjoy taking care of others,” Montaya remarks. “We’re available all the time, and offer the convenience of scheduling recurring, same-day appointments for the benef it of our patients.” Providing high-quality and personalized care to residents in Northern Colorado allows Sheree Montoya and her NOCO Healthcare team to back up their passion for better healthcare.

Heart For Health THE RESOURCE CENTER

The Resource Center has a history of walking alongside women and fulfilling medical needs of expectant mothers. Dedicated to privacy and care, the medical team at the Resource Center offers education, medical services, and one-on-one support. Their heart is to help and support each woman who walks through the door. Each person involved with the center is specifically recruited to make sure each woman receives the total care she needs. The Resource Center offers many different services to help expectant mothers. Gail Holmes, executive director at the Resource Center, shares that the biggest service they offer is pregnancy testing. However, running a simple test is not the only thing the nurses are tasked with. “Our nurses give a gift of education to the expectant mothers,” Gail emphasizes, “many mothers come in with questions surrounding pregnancy that an at-home pregnancy test doesn’t always answer.” The Resource Center desires to create a place where

mothers can come in and ask any question, knowing that their privacy will be a top priority. All the services offered by the Resource Center are free meaning no insurance is required for any kind of visit or service received. The heart for the community and individuals that the Resource Center serves is not just held by the medical staff but by volunteers as well. All the greeters at the center are volunteers who love what the nonprofit does for the community. There are also volunteers who are advocates for each client who walks through the door. The advocate listens to the client’s needs, answers any questions, and helps introduce the client to the nurse. “The advocate can be used as much or as little as the client desires.” Gail explains, “our advocates are eager to walk alongside these women and make sure their needs are being met.” If you are looking to get involved, the Resource Center is always looking for volunteers dedicated to the community and helping expectant mothers.

Recharge Your Energy - Simple Stretches for Any Age

Kyle Taplin, Co-Owner, Founder, and Trainer at SOAR

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

Established in 2014, Scientifically Oriented Athletic Regimen is a training program focused on helping athletes in middle school, high school, and college reach new levels of performance. SOAR has a progressive, unique, and balanced approach that is guaranteed to build a well-rounded athlete. SOAR also trains adults to reach their health and wellness goals through small group training or personal training to be able to keep up with their kids and grandkids for years to come! 1. PIGEON STRETCH: A commonly tight muscle for adults is the piriformis muscle in the glute region. Some adults can experience sciatic nerve pain that can be very painful at times! Tightness in the piriformis muscle is sometimes the culprit. With one leg crossed at about 90 degrees, use a prop to elevate the foot and lower leg. You should feel the stretch in the side of the hip and glute area of the leg that is up and crossed. To feel more of a stretch, lean forward more or put your leg higher. To lessen the stretch, try a lower prop or have less of a forward lean. 2. HIP FLEXOR LEANING STRETCH When we sit for longer periods of time due to work or school, this region on the top of the thighs can become very tight. With one leg in front of the other, shift your weight forward on the front leg into a slight lunge with the back leg straight. As you lean, keep your chest tall and push your hips forward. After feeling a stretch at the top of your thigh, reach one arm straight up

and lean towards the leg out in front of you. This lean adds an extra stretch that can be beneficial to relieving lower back stiffness and pain. 3. DOORWAY STRETCH Bad posture affects many people. Shoulders can round forward over time due to the way we sit during work, school, or even just hanging out. This causes a great deal of tightness in our chest. This stretch is tremendous and easy to do anywhere you are! For many, more mobility here can relieve extra tension and tightness in the upper back and neck! It also can help release tension in your shoulders. In a doorway or the corner of a room, lift your arms out to your side with your elbows at 90 degrees. With your forearms resting on the doorway or wall, lean forward until you start feeling a stretch through your chest and shoulders. Your chest should fall forward but make sure to keep your back straight! A good general rule is to hold static stretches for 20-30 seconds at a time and complete them for 2-3 sets. Don’t have time to do them all? No worries - these are easy enough to do throughout your day and they don’t have to be done all at the same time! Remember, you do not need to be in pain to get an effective stretch. Go just far enough to feel a light stretch. If you are tight, over time, you can try to stretch further into it. Make sure you breathe deeply as you complete the stretch as well!

One of the many great things about smoothies is that you can put almost any fruit and even vegetables, while still making a delicious beverage. Several healthcare professionals recommend including sufficient fruits and vegetables in your diet may reduce the risk of chronic diseases and help you maintain a healthy body weight. Smoothies also help increase your fiber levels, helping with the digestive system. Some high-fiber foods to include in your smoothies include raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, pears, apples, bananas, leafy green vegetables, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, and almond butter. Smoothies are even great for kids. Adding vegetables and fruit that kids might not choose to eat every day into a smoothie can disguise the bitter taste that kids may not prefer, and give them a healthy, delicious alternative to sugary candy, or high-calorie sodas. Adding stevia, honey, syrup, and other alternative sweeteners. Even the pickiest of eaters won’t even be able to tell a difference, or taste those healthy greens. Smoothies can also give you a healthy, nutritious, and balanced meal filled with fats, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Another benefit of drinking smoothies is that they can provide a great source of energy and protein. Studies have found that a higher protein intake helps you feel fuller and can even help reduce food cravings throughout the day. Protein in a smoothie or meal can help give the body lasting energy. Increased protein can also prevent muscle loss when losing weight on restricted diets. Highprotein smoothies are also great meals for weight loss. Some people will also add protein powder made from plants, milk, or eggs, any of these types of protein are great for adding an extra health kick to your tasty beverage. Some high-protein ingredients include almonds and other nuts, peanut butter, flax seeds, soy milk, and even tofu. Start off your new year right, by giving your body a health kick with smoothies for breakfast! These three smoothie recipes are perfect for anyone on the go and make a quick breakfast that is healthy and delicious.
