As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and day time adventuring are exchanged for busier schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. We dedicate our August issue to the cutest members of our community—our kids. They have a way of making us feel special, and their sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we take Greeley back to its roots to get to know our origin story and one local child’s story of growing up on the trains in 1906. We highlight local dads who are raising Greeley’s next generation and a kid’s play haven nestled right in a Greeley family’s very own basement. We also spotlight two local organizations doing the most for kids in our community and a few exercises to get your kid’s remaining energy out before the school year begins. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and soak up all that extra time with the ones you love. As for me, this issue is bittersweet as it marks the end of my career as the Greeley Lifestyle Editorial Coordinator. I will be heading back to school with the kids this year – only a bit different. I will start law school this month in Washington D.C. as I set out on my career goal to work as a lawyer in our nation’s capital. I have loved getting to know our community on a deeper level, and I have come to love Greeley over this past year more than ever before. Getting to know the businesses and community members like yourself that help make Greeley a great place to live, and sharing your stories with our community, has been an honor. I will be staying on the Greeley Lifestyle team as Director of Social Media and am eager to continue tracking Greeley’s great stories through each month’s editions of Greeley Lifestyle. Sincerely,

One thing remains the same – Greeley is a community that comes together to embrace change, support one another, and maintain a high quality of life.

Imagine giving up your house, your land, belongings, and saying goodbye to family and friends to start anew in an unestablished community. A trip to the Greeley History Museum reveals that this is what the initial Greeley settlers resorted to in April 1870. Leaving their homes with a spirit of adventure, experiment, hope, and a shared vision to create a new utopian society, the settlers met challenges and hardships, such as building homes, starting farms, and having adequate access to a water source. In 1820 when Major Stephen H. Long wrote about his trip to the Great Plains, he described the area east of the Rocky Mountains as “uninhabitable by a people depending upon agriculture for their subsistence.” Nearly fifty years later, in 1869, Nathan Meeker visited Colorado Territory’s front range on assignment for The New York Tribune, which sparked an idea for a utopian society based on agriculture and shared social values. Upon returning to New York, Meeker shared his vision with his employer, Horace Greeley. Greeley was delighted by Meeker’s ideas, so they began writing an article entitled “The Call,” printed in the December 14, 1869 issue of The New York Tribune. In Meeker’s article, he invited 50 people to move West to start a town. Meeker received over 3,000 responses of interest. Of those he selected, 480 initially moved from northern and eastern states to be part of the new colony, called The Union Colony. The Union Colonists paid a $5 initiation

fee and a membership fee of $150. Each member was entitled to a parcel of farming land and the right to buy a town lot from $25-50. The proceeds funded a schoolhouse, town hall, and other community improvements. Union Colony members also agreed to a way of life built on shared ideals: faith, family, education, irrigation, temperance, agriculture, and home. The Greeley History Museum displays how the colonists made irrigation plans, drew up a town, and built schoolhouses and town structures. Irrigation was the priority for the Union Colonists. Within two years, 37 miles of ditches were in place. Early settlers also established water rights, transforming the land into a rich agricultural center that still thrives today. They designed Greeley on a grid of wide tree-lined streets with large yards and a central Park (Lincoln Park), modeled after other cities Meeker saw out east. The railway played a prominent role in Greeley’s growth. In 1869, construction of the Denver Pacific Railway resumed, designed to connect Denver with Cheyenne and the Union Pacific. On December 13, 1869, it reached Evans from the north. Workers completed the railway on June 22, 1870, and Denver gained an outlet to the outside world. Heather Bean, owner of Syntax Distillery and Cocktail Bar in Greeley, recalls stories of her grandmother Thelma growing up on the train. Thelma lived with her mother in the berth of the caboose

since her mom worked as a railroad cook. The railroad provided regular work for Thelma’s mother. “Railroads would be built in the north in the summer and the south in the winter, so it was a stable job,” said Bean. As Thelma got older, it was clear that she was a brilliant child. It was hard to get a proper education on a train, so her mom sent Thelma with families that lived near schools. When the school year was over, they’d put Thelma back on a train to eventually meet up with her mother. Finally, Thelma rode a train to Greeley and finished her teaching degree with top honors from the State Normal School of Colorado, which later became the University of Northern Colorado. Thelma went on to teach in rural schools in Colorado and South Dakota. Greeley is growing and transforming today, with its population nearly tripling since 1970. Where open agricultural lands once stood, houses, businesses, and schools now stand. One thing remains the same – Greeley is a community that comes together to embrace change, support one another, and maintain a high quality of life. Exploring these stories at the Greeley History Museum plays a vital role in keeping our local history alive.

Sweet & Fancy Treats By Out of the Blue, featuring Chloe, Breklynn, Claire, and Adley Thompson At Out of the Blue, a unique, locally-owned breakfast and brunch spot, Chloe (13), Breklynn (10), Claire (7), Adley (4) Thompson started their morning with some sweet treats that doubled as breakfast. They started with Out of the Blue’s Milk Flight, which included four kinds of flavored milk: Raspberry, Chocolate, Caramel, and Mint. “The milk is so fancy!” Chloe exclaimed. Adley, the youngest, loved the pink one with sprinkles and the sweet berry flavor. The girls finished their milk down to the last drop before moving on to their next fancy treat: Strawberries and Crème Biscuits. The girls described the biscuits as fluffy and the crème as sweet, like little strawberry clouds. Finishing them down to the last crumb, the girls were adamant that Out of the Blue was their new favorite place -- it even beat dad’s cooking! The Thompson girls gave Out of the Blue’s treats a 5/5 review and couldn’t wait to come back for another round of Milk Flights.

Perfect Poolside Paradise By the Greeley Country Club, featuring Treston Sinclair When it comes to burgers, the Greeley Country Club (GCC) achieved something not many other places have – a burger that tastes just as good as a fast-food burger but without all the chemicals. Treston (13) found that most homemade burgers taste charred, and when they’re charred they lose the delicate juiciness of a perfect, fast-food-like burger. The GCC’s burgers get the home-cooked taste without all the slight imperfections, and to top it off, their fries are salty with a little bit of spice. The poolside dining is great, and if you love to swim, then you’re in luck. The GCC is the perfect place to hang out with friends and family and enjoy a delicious poolside lunch. Treston gives the GCC poolside burger a 5/5 review with an added point for scenery!

Sweet & Savory By Gourmet Grub, featuring Averie Maldonado At Gourmet Grub, a local restaurant in the Westlake shopping area, Averie (5) was our taste tester for the popular pastry dessert made by Gourmet Grub’s Chef Justin: Cronuts. A cronut is like a donut, made with croissant dough. Chef Justin explained it as layers upon layers of butter throughout the pastry, topped with cinnamon and sugar sprinkles, also served with two dipping sauces, sweet butterscotch and rich dark chocolate. At first bite, there were smiles all around. The yummy cronut was the perfect amount of sweet and savory brought together. Averie preferred the sweet butterscotch sauce over the dark chocolate, but enjoyed the cronut with and without the sauce. Averie gave the cronuts a 4/5 review, and mom loved getting a taste of the sweet treat as well!

Let Me Eat Cake! By Fat Albert’s, featuring Erik Andersen At the beloved local restaurant, Fat Alberts, Erik (13) was our valiant taste tester. Eating at the restaurant, which the family said has been their go-to place for years, Erik was given his choice of delicious pie by the owner, Susan. Without hesitation, Erik chose to try a slice of the Carrot Cake. At first glance, he said it was “delicious at first sight!” At the first bite, he exclaimed, “very good!” He first noticed the light and creamy cream cheese frosting. He said that the frosting was the best thing he was tasting! Erik said on a scale of 1-10, his rating would be 1,000. Erik was very pleased with his experience and can’t wait to bring his family back to Fat Albert’s to try another slice from Susan’s delicious pie selection.

I do want to teach them, however, about Jesus, the value of a dollar, and generosity towards others with time and talent. HOW DO YOU BALANCE THE REALTOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND THE DADDY DUTIES? Since becoming a dad, my priorities have completely shifted. I am rushing home more to be with them. I still struggle with work-life balance, but I can tell you that the best feeling in the world is coming home and Millie yelling “Daddy!” and CeCe waddling over, grinning from ear to ear.

I am very proud of my kids- of what they’ve done and what they have yet to accomplish. WHAT HAS BEEN MOST SATISFYING IN FATHERHOOD? The whole process. Watching them grow, learn, struggle, and then watching them succeed is very rewarding. They are incredible humans. HAVE YOU EARNED YOUR #1 DAD MUG? I think so! Over the years, I coached roughly 25 of my son’s baseball and basketball teams. I once attempted to coach my daughter’s volleyball team. I’ll never do that again.

HOW DO YOU BEST ENGAGE YOUR KIDS? My kids are very involved in sports. Fin plays volleyball and softball. Reed plays flag football, basketball, and baseball. I get to help coach both my kids’ teams. Volleyball, however, is out of my wheelhouse.

WHAT HAS IT MEANT TO YOU TO BE BOTH DAD AND COACH? It is extremely important to me because it’s another avenue for me to interact with my kids on a different level than just “dad.” It’s also rewarding to be able to teach them the valuable lessons of success and failure that are inherent to sports.

What does it take to become a “whole new athlete” – to run faster, to become stronger, more agile, or self-confident? Kyle Taplin and Keith Carlisle, owners of Scientifically Oriented Athletic Regimen (SOAR), believe that “many kids have the talent inside them; they just need help unlocking their potential.” Taplin and Carlisle have made a habit of creating ‘brand new athletes’ by tapping into the inherent potential of young athletes, and after working through their programs, “many went from out of shape to the strongest in the room.” Taplin and Carlisle founded SOAR in 2014 after graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with Sport and Exercise Science degrees and extensive experience playing and coaching youth and college athletes. They developed SOAR after noticing a gap in proper training for middle and high school athletes and built their business around what they feel like they would have benefited from as young athletes. “We live and breathe exercise, fitness, and how to properly progress athletes through a science-based exercise regimen,” Kyle said. Keith and Kyle want athletes of all levels to feel welcome and motivated to reach their athletic goals in a safe and

challenging atmosphere. Kyle says, “I want to impact athletes’ lives not only by helping them succeed physically as an athlete but also by providing a place where athletes can learn life lessons of hard work, perseverance, and gain self-confidence.” SOAR provides programs for younger athletes in middle school and high school and college athletes. The beginner athlete program is geared towards athletes that want to build a solid athletic base -- attention to strength, power, speed, agility, and endurance. It focuses heavily on proper form, mechanics, and coordination. The SOAR+ program is for advanced athletes looking for more individualized or sport-specific attention. This program is designed around the athlete’s goals or needs. Regardless of the program, “Virtually every athlete sees improvement in agility, vertical jump, top speed, muscular endurance and power, and mobility.” To give our readers a small glimpse into a SOAR session, Keith and Kyle have provided four exercises they use to help create a “whole new athlete” through their SOAR and SOAR+ training programs. 01 // This is a great upper body push exercise that challenges the chest, shoulders, and triceps and is a great functional exercise for athletes that perform rotational movements frequently. Lean into the move and rotate at your trunk. Extend your arm straight out and forward as you pivot on your feet for full rotation.

02 // The depth jump is a great exercise to work explosiveness through the lower body. This type of motion is important in any sport you play that requires sprinting or jumping. Jumping as high or as quickly as possibly is great for increasing jumping ability and explosiveness off the ground. Load at the hip and do not bend forward at your back. 03 // This is a great exercise for warming up and working on mobility through the hip and hamstrings. Many athletes lack mobility limiting their ability to squat and properly load at their hips. Keep your heels on the ground and chest up, squatting down as deep as possible with arms extended straight up. As you sit into the squat, make sure to look up and get your chest up and butt down with heels flat to the ground. 04 // Core stability is important for any sport. If your core is stable, it helps your body move properly and have strength from the center of your body. Keep your core stable and braced while moving your opposite arm and leg at the same time. The other arm and leg remain in place without movement. Your low back should remain flat to the ground.

Brigitte and Ty Gentry, owners of West Point Carpet One Floor & Home, ensured their surprise was one their four kids would never forget. Their children were more than surprised after a month-long renovation to their unfinished basement on a beautiful Christmas morning. CONTINUED >

The Gentry’s four children, Parker (16), Ollie (11), Tatum (14), and Breck (8), all love being active, playing sports, and spending time with one another. At first, the Gentry’s wanted to use their empty space downstairs for a theater room, but Brigitte had a better idea. She thought an upscale playroom could be something for their kids and their kids’ friends to enjoy all year round. Ty and Brigitte kept the ‘theater room’ a secret during the renovation so their kids wouldn’t know the epic surprise that awaited them on the morning of December 25th. “ One night, it hit me; all my kids are soccer players. What if we gave them a place to play when the outdoors aren’t an option. It seemed a bit crazy at first, but the idea grew on me,” Brigitte said. S he told Ty about her idea, which he had to think about, but was easy to convince. They agreed that since all four of their children play soccer, an indoor sports court was a necessity, alongside a music and video game

area, foosball table, and a spacious living room. And if there is one thing the Gentry’s do best, it is design and build beautiful, functional spaces for people to enjoy. Though its often for the benefit or their clients, this time it was to their own personal enjoyment. Ty and Parker use the music area the most, practicing their guitar, ukulele, and piano talents. Tatum, Ollie, and Breck love the indoor soccer area. The versatility of the space gives everyone something to do through all seasons of the year. “Our house is definitely a place the kids like to hang out. That was our main goal of the basement. We wanted our kids and their friends here,” Brigitte said. From the music nook to the gaming zone sign and bunk beds to the sign that says, ‘live by grace, not perfection,’ the basement is a perfect place for an afternoon hangout spot for anyone and everyone – a kids’ play haven, if you will.

Every child has a story. Life Stories Child and Family Advocacy (Life Stories) believes every child deserves a story of hope and a future, free from abuse and neglect. Life Stories Child and Family Advocacy provides advocacy and support for children in need in our community. One of the key ways they provide support is through their Child Advocacy Center (CAC). Life Stories’ CAC provides a safe space for children and their families to tell their stories and begin the journey of healing. Life Stories works with children and families to help them turn their stories into one of great expectancy. Chris Eisenhauer, Child Advocacy Center Program Manager stated, “Our goal is to put support systems in place, so every child will experience that telling their story made their life better.” When a child and their family enter Life Stories’ doors, they are greeted by a staff member and accompanied into a warm and welcoming waiting room filled with stuffed animals, crayons, and toys. A team of interviewers and family advocates provides support, resources, and advocacy throughout the entire process. To honor the childrens’ bravery, Life Stories’ walls are filled with little gingerbread kids. After their interview, children have the opportunity to create their own gingerbread person where they can share their personal stories. Eisenhauer believes child abuse is a community issue, one that we should all seek to support. In 2021, the Weld County Department of Human Services reported that 1 in

95 children in our community is facing situations of abuse and neglect. As a comprehensive community effort, Life Stories partners with local law enforcement, the District Attorney’s office, the Weld County Department of Human Services, and medical and mental providers to ensure that children receive support from every angle. Furthermore, the CAC recently added counseling and a non-acute medical room on site to bring yet another layer of support for children. By bringing the right resources to a child and their family members, families feel heard, supported, and cared for by their community. In 2020-2021, Life Stories’ served over 672 Weld County youth. Over 400 children received services from the CAC, and 250 children were served by a CASA volunteer. Life Stories implores community members to support this cause. You can be involved in preventing child abuse in our community by getting educated, volunteering, or financially supporting Life Stories. The 10th annual SuperHero Run on September 17, 2022, is a great way to show your support for Life Stories. Community members can also apply to become CASA volunteers to advocate for children in court. When the sad reality of abuse becomes part of a child’s story, Life Stories helps children turn their story into one of hope and healing. It is up to all of us to be a part of helping change these children’s stories, giving them a hopeful future and a story of great expectancy.
