LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Men's Issue Presents- The Greeley Stampede, Celebrating 100 Years! It is with great pleasure that we unveil this year’s Men’s Issue -- presenting the 100 Year Greeley Stampede Program and Special Edition! We cannot tell you how excited we are to bring you 100 pages of great content, dedicated to the largest and most exciting annual event in Greeley. With such a rich legacy in the Greeley community, it is an honor to acknowledge many of the heroes of the Greeley Stampede, past and present alike. Generation after generation have volunteered and worked tirelessly to put on such an incredible western celebration that has evolved into the largest 4th of July rodeo in the United States. We are excited to share some of what goes on behind the scenes planning the event each year, how the Stampede gives back to our community, and some of the legacy events that are coming back this year alongside exciting, new experiences for families and friends to enjoy. We also have a cowgirl workout to help get in shape for the next time you ride that mechanical bull, a recipe for you to make Greeley’s best funnel cakes at home, and two western cocktail recipes that you might have to pair with a big steak dinner before you head over to a Stampede concert! And of course it wouldn’t be the perfect 100 Year celebration without some of the greatest photos taken throughout the decades. We are deeply grateful to everyone in Greeley and across Colorado that has contributed to this amazing event year after year. We hope this issue reminds you of many great Stampede memories and inspires you to head over and make even more this year at the 100th Year Greeley Stampede! Sincerely Yours, TA R A R A S M U S O N , P U B L I S H E R @GREELEYLIFESTYLE

A full mouth reconstruction is utilized to restore the natural beauty of your teeth due to breakdown from wear, decay, or stain. In this case, the patient had worn his teeth due to grinding and was not happy with the shape and color of his teeth. All cases are restored in provisional restorations prior to completing the case to ensure ideal esthetics, speech, and function. Once all these requirements are met, the case can be finalized with all ceramic crowns or veneers to achieve the patients desired results. All full mouth reconstruction cases begin with an hour consultation with Dr. Thompson and our amazing team to help you achieve the results you desire.

WELCOME TO THE 100TH ANNUAL GREELEY STAMPEDE From Justin Watada, General Manager of the Greeley Stampede ARTICLE BY JUSTIN WATADA PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIARA ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY
2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the Annual Greeley Stampede. The event that was started to honor local potato farmers has changed a lot over the years. Still, one thing that has remained consistent – the celebration continues to bring the entire community together every summer to celebrate our Nation’s independence and preserve our western heritage. This year’s event has something for everyone, from crowd favorites like rodeos, music, and the carnival to new events like hoverboard barrel racing, a whiskey & cigar tasting, and a LEGO® building contest. Along with the variety of family entertainment that the Stampede offers, we’re also excited to have started several new educational community programs to help engage our youth. A full schedule of all the fun is included in this program and shared on our website. We want to thank all of our volunteers for putting in countless hours to make the Stampede what it is today. Volunteers truly power this event and we wouldn’t be able to do it without their passion and dedication. Finally, we also want to thank the sponsors and donors who invested more than $2.9 million to be a part of the community celebration. It is amazing to see the community come together for Colorado’s Largest Western Summer Celebration every summer. We look forward to you making memories at the 100th Annual Greeley Stampede June 23-July 4, 2022.

“The Stampede is what it is today because of the countless hours that all of these nominees put in to make our community better.”
Over the past 99 years, many people have made valuable contributions to the success of the Greeley Stampede. The Greeley Stampede has selected two outstanding individuals and one family to be inducted into the 2022 Greeley Stampede Hall of Fame through a community nomination process. “The Stampede is what it is today because of the countless hours that all of these nominees put in to make our community better,” said Justin Watada, General Manager and Hall of Fame Chairman.
THE HILL FAMILY The Hill Family’s involvement in the Greeley Stampede started in the 1970s when the Stampede transitioned into a stand-alone organization. Carl Hill first joined the Stampede Committee in 1976. After 25 years of involvement, Carl was named the 1999 Grand Marshal for his major contributions to the success of the Stampede. In 1987, Gary Hill was elected to the Stampede Committee and served as Grounds Chairman until 1989. In 2002, Brett Hill became the Stampede Parade Trail Boss. The Hill family has served on the Stampede Committee as a Wrangler or Trail boss for over three decades and has played a vital role in the growth of the Stampede itself.
LYNN SETTJE As the CEO of the first Greeley Stampede, Lynn Settje helped lead the event to gain international recognition. Settje’s first assignment as a member of the Stampede Committee in 1989 was to organize the 4th of July parade – a community tradition that has grown to be one of the largest 4th of July parades in the nation – which he coordinated to be televised on 9News. His second assignment was to manage and create national sponsors. Settje created the Rustler Newspaper to expand the reach of the Greeley Stampede. Settje won the IFEA Grand Pinnacle Awards in 1999 and 2006. Much of what Settje incorporated in his time as CEO is still in effect today.
RON JACKSON In 1989, Jackson became a member of the Stampede Committee, serving for six years before being selected as the General Chairman in 1993. Jackson played a prominent role in making the Stampede a more profitable organization. He was instrumental in major capital improvement projects, including the west arena enclosure project, the Stampede office expansion, and the construction of the portable music stage. With this new stage, Jackson helped bring big names like Willie Nelson and the Judds to Greeley.

2022 Grand Marshals ARTICLE BY KEVIN MCFARLING | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIARA ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY
Jim and Kirsten Humphrey, Grand Marshalls for the 100th Greeley Stampede
The Greeley Stampede Grand Marshals’ history has been filled with community leaders, volunteers and individuals that have had a significant impact on our community. Ever since 1954, it has been one of the Stampede’s long standing traditions to name Grand Marshals for each year’s event. This year, the Greeley Stampede is proud to announce Jim and Kirsten Humphrey as the 2022 Grand Marshals. The 100th Greeley Stampede is a special occasion that requires a special set of Grand Marshals to pair with the event. This year’s Grand Marshals have not only been active in supporting the Greeley Stampede and the Stampede Foundation, but you will find them at many fundraising events throughout our community. Their generosity and willingness to give back is what has made them stand out. “Being a volunteer and supporter of the event for thirty-one years, it’s an honor and a privilege to be included in the 100th event as Grand Marshals,” commented Jim Humphrey, who started volunteering at the Greeley Stampede when he was fifteen years old. It all started when Jim would help cook and serve food for the night shows. Jim remembers, “the road crews would always look forward to coming to Greeley because they knew they would be getting some home cooking.” The family tradition continued with Kirsten joining the team and later their children. Kirsten fondly recalled memories of their kids and family being in the kitchen
together and spending time at the event including a winning Mutton Bustin’ ride by their daughter when she was 6. As time went on and their business, Power Services Company, grew, Jim and Kirsten transitioned into becoming sponsors of the concert series at the Greeley Stampede for over 10 years. Jim explains their passion for the Stampede and their continued involvement as, “we’re not only sponsors, we’re supporters. This is a community event and I believe in it.” Jim and Kirsten’s involvement with the Stampede has made them more than just a sponsor; they are seen as part of the family. Being Grand Marshals expands outside of the Greeley Stampede. Individuals, couples, or groups that are chosen also have dedicated their time and efforts to supporting the Northern Colorado community. Jim and Kirsten are pillar examples of this as they are involved in a wide range of non-profit groups including the American Cancer Society, the Weld Food Bank, and local school districts. They are always involved in some project and doing everything they can to raise money to support the community. It is apparent that Jim and Kirsten are passionate about the Greeley Stampede as well as our community and we are lucky to have such enthusiastic supporters. It is these qualities that have earned them the right to be the 100th Greeley Stampede Grand Marshals.

In 1922, a gallon of milk cost $0.35, gasoline was $0.25 a gallon, and Greeley had officially been a city for 36 years. That year, what we now know as the Greeley Stampede was held for the first time.
THE FOUNDATIONS In 1922, community member J.W. Norcross brought volunteers and local merchants together to host the Greeley 4th of July Celebration and Spud Rodeo. The free one-day event at Island Grove Regional Park included bronc riding, fancy roping, horse, motorcycle, and bicycle races, and a pie-eating contest. 2,500 Greeley residents attended the celebration. The Greeley Spud Rodeo was a hit among Greeley residents and was taken over by the Chamber of Commerce the following year. By 1930, the attendance had grown to over 30,000, and the celebration was expanded to two days. Children’s events, steer wrestling, and Rodeo Queens were added to the line-up. Greeley’s celebration of patriotism, community and the Western way of life had become a much-anticipated annual event.

THE EVOLUTION In 1949, it was decided that the name needed to encompass a broader meaning that more appropriately reflected the growing scope of the event. Playing off the famous quote by Horace Greeley, the “Go West to Greeley” era was born. 1958 saw the remodeling of the arena to bring spectators closer to the action. Through the 1960s and early 1970s, the event grew to five days with the addition of team roping, the expansion of the midway carnival, and the inclusion of night shows. By 1970, National Champion rodeo cowboys from all over North America were coming to compete at Go West To Greeley. With the growth in prestige and number of events, the organizers realized it was again time for a name that more accurately reflected the scope of the event. They held a contest, and the name “Greeley Independence Stampede” was chosen from among 384 entries. The next decade brought tremendous growth and expansion. In 1971, The Stampede Troupe entertained the crowds with its first musical performance. In 1972, nationally recognized musical guests Johnny Paycheck, Loretta Lynn, and Pat Boone performed in night shows. By 1974, The Greeley Stampede was a six-day event with 42,000 attendees. In 1976, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo was broadcast nationwide on CBS. Through all the changes and growth, the Chamber of Commerce continued to organize the event. But, by the nation’s Centennial, the scope was more than the Chamber could manage. The Stampede needed a volunteer group, and thus The Wranglers were formed. The Greeley Independence Stampede was incorporated, and the all-volunteer Stampede Committee was formed. Service on the committee was limited to six years, and after that, volunteers became members of the Old Buckers Club. Tragedy struck in August of 1977 when fire destroyed the newly refurbished grandstand. Fortunately, a new concrete structure was built in time for the 1978 Stampede.

The Greeley Stampede became a “can’t miss” rodeo for World Champion cowboys in the 1980s and 90s due to the prestige and prize money offered. Visitors from every state and many different countries flocked to the event. The grandstands underwent a $4.1 million addition in 1995 to accommodate the growing crowds, which were now up to 350,000. New entertainment options continued to be offered, including the addition of a Demolition Derby in 1980 and the continued expansion of carnival rides and food. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s 1996 night show at the Stampede was nominated for The Country Music Association (CMA) Event of the Year. A herd of Longhorn cattle was paraded through downtown to celebrate the opening of the Stampede in 2000 – an event that remains a much-anticipated event for Greeley residents today. In 2006, The Stampede Foundation was established to support education in Weld County. Since its inception, the Stampede Foundation has awarded $665,000 to 640 students. CONTINUED >

THE PRESENT Since 2016, The Stampede has invested $1.5 million in capital improvements to Island Grove Park, with another estimated $2.8 million in 2022. Renovations include new shoots, a permanent stage, an enclosure, and air conditioning within much of the Club level of the arena. Over the past five years, the Stampede has given $450,000 back to community groups that support the event with volunteers. As the Stampede celebrates 100 years, over 220,000 guests are expected, and nationally ranked cowboys and cowgirls will compete for $225,000 in prize money. Some of the most popular names in Country and other music will entertain evening crowds, including Brad Paisley, Jon Pardi, the Stone Temple Pilots, and more. More importantly, the Greeley community will come together to connect and celebrate our Western heritage with one another. Long-time Stampede volunteer Jackie Lyman said, “If you grew up in Greeley, you went as a kid, and then, you grow up and take your kids. You know that it is the one place that you will see everyone.”
LOOKING AHEAD What’s in store for the next 100 years of Greeley’s premier event? According to another long-time volunteer, James Herman, “The heart of the Stampede is keeping alive our Western heritage. I hope we are still celebrating those roots one hundred years from now, even as our area becomes more urban.” Longtime Wangler, Bob Hinderaker, agrees. “As we become more of an urban society, people have less opportunity to experience the Western way of life.” Herman and Hinderaker also feel passionate about the Stampede remaining a community-driven event. “Bringing people together and our community sharing the celebration with neighboring communities is so important,” Hinderaker commented. Stampede and community volunteers give hundreds of thousands of hours year-round to make the event a success. According to Herman, “It gets in your blood; there is just something about it. It becomes a family.” The volunteers and merchants who conceived the first Spud Rodeo in 1922 probably couldn’t imagine what their original endeavor would look like 100 years later, just as it’s hard to imagine how the Stampede will evolve in another century. But, given the enthusiasm and nostalgia around it, we can only foresee bigger and better things for the Greeley Independence Stampede.

The Stampede Foundation Gives Back ARTICLE BY BETHANY WILEY, MPH, RYT
What started in 1922 as the Greeley Spud Rodeo with 2,500 in attendance has evolved into today’s Greeley Stampede with more than 220,000 rodeo fans, concert-goers, and carnival revelers throughout the 12-day event. In addition to a fun-filled summer celebration serving as a way to connect and gather, the Stampede is a generous donor, giving back to the community. From the beginning, when free cherry pie and coffee enticed local potato farmers to come to the Spud Rodeo, giving back has always been ingrained in the Stampede. The nonprofit Stampede Foundation was established in 2006 to allot higher education scholarships and local grants to graduating high school seniors. The first scholarship given was for $500. Fifteen years later, the Stampede Foundation awards $50,000 annually to graduating high school seniors and provides additional grants for education programs like the Greeley Evans School District 6 Back-To-School Event, Poudre Learning Center, and Success Foundation.
The annual giving will double in 2022, thanks to a match by community partner JBS. As part of the 100th Greeley Stampede celebration, the Foundation will fund twenty $5,000 scholarships, totaling $100,000. Scholarship recipients, Weld County high school seniors, are selected based on their outstanding academic achievement, leadership in the community, and plans to further their education. Recipients may use the scholarship at any accredited trade school, college, or university. Jacey Reinert, a Kersey native, is a 2018 Stampede Foundation scholarship recipient and feels supported by the community. With the help of several scholarships, Reinert graduated this May from the University of Wyoming, earning a double major in marketing and professional sales, and a minor in communications. She credits her perseverance to the scholarships she received. “It gave me the confidence to go after my goals,” said Reinert. “I felt supported in my dreams, and that means so much to me.” CONTINUED >

Banking that fits like the right pair of wading boots. The Stampede Foundation also gives to the Banner Health Mammography Fund through the Tough Enough to Wear Pink Rodeo, the Northern Colorado Honor Flight, and the Weld Food Bank through the carnival canned food drive. In his eighth year, Greeley Stampede General Manager Justin Watada said that as a community event, the Stampede Foundation remains focused on giving back. “When we had to cancel the Stampede in 2020, we heard from a lot of groups that also felt the impact,” Watada said. “When we lost our funding during COVID, many groups also lost theirs; it trickled down since a lot of groups rely on the Stampede every year as their fundraiser,” Watada said the support that the Stampede Foundation has received from its sponsors and donors has been remarkable. “Everybody just wants to see things go back to normal again.” While the Greeley Stampede has seven staff members working year-round to ensure a wonderful experience for their attendees, the event cannot happen without volunteers. The community celebration relies on many helping hands to make the event a success with hundreds of volunteers in security, hospitality, beverages, grounds, rodeo, parades, night shows, parking, and admission. To show its gratitude, the Stampede Foundation finds ways to give back to its volunteers. “In 2021, with a modified Stampede event, we still donated over $80,000 back to the groups that came to help, from parking, cleaning, and setting up,” said Watada. The Stampede benefits from voluntary groups such as Eaton School District, Roosevelt Cheerleaders, Rapids Fort Collins soccer, and the Exchange Club. From scholarships, grants, and Weld Food Bank donations, to the Tough Enough to Wear Pink rodeo and Northern Colorado Honor Flight donations, the Stampede brings much more than 12 days of fun and entertainment to Northern Colorado. Participating in the Greeley Stampede provides memories and connection while also supporting the Stampede Foundation’s impact by giving back to the community.

TIMELESS TRADITIONS AND NEW EXPERIENCES
THE GREELEY STAMPEDE BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER WITH NEW & OLD EVENTS FOR ALL ARTICLE BY CHRISTI NORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The Greeley Stampede began as a way to give the community an event that allowed them to step back and celebrate their hard work. Many of the Stampede’s early traditions were started with the Spud Rodeo with classic fair events such as pie-eating contests, fireworks, and a rodeo. Over the last century, the rodeos have gotten larger, the concerts bigger, and new entertainment is added each year in an effort to have something for everyone.
The Stampede gives families around the Greeley area something to look forward to, as children and parents count down the days until each year’s celebration. This year, the Greeley Stampede is bringing back all your favorite traditions while introducing brand new events to bring the Greeley Community together. Check out a few of them here, and see the full program calendar for dates and times for the events below and many more!
CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT Not just any backyard game, cornhole, with its background starting with children throwing bags of corn in prairie dog holes, is now a proper competitive sport. So dust off your bean, or rather corn, bags and get ready to show everyone your skills. Those years of backyard BBQ practice are about to make you a winner!
HOVERBOARD BARREL RACING A new twist on a beloved rodeo classic, the brand new hoverboard barrel racing event brings fun for everyone to the Stampede. Watch the hilarity ensue as old and young attempt to circle the barrels in the shortest amount of time. Don’t forget to wear a helmet and a smile as you show your friends just how fast you are.
WHISKEY AND CIGAR TA STING Like wine pairs so well with cheese, whiskey and cigars enhance the taste of each other. If you have enjoyed one without the other, this event will allow you to expand your horizons. So come take your time and enjoy a new experience.
HERITAGE OF MEXICO RODEO As another new addition to the Stampede’s lineup of rodeos, this event will showcase the historic rodeos of Mexico. It will feature traditional dances, all choreographed by Diaz- a fourth-generation champion charro. The rodeo will also feature Mexicanstyle bull riding, bareback riding, trick roping, Mariachi Music, side saddle girls, and Portuguese-style bull fights. FAMILY FIELD DAY As kids we lived for field day! Filled with water balloon tosses, three-legged races, and hula-hooping, many still cherish the memories. So bring your family and friends to enjoy a day of nostalgia with fun-filled events for everyone. Start practicing for those relays, runs, and tosses, and come play with us.
RODEO The rodeo is one of the most popular events returning to the Stampede. The PRCA ProRodeo Series, Xtreme Bulls, and American Bull Fighting will all be returning to the Stampede this year.
CONCERTS Concerts are a large part of what makes the Stampede so special. This year, the Stampede will add another concert stage and host dozens of artists including Brad Paisley and Stone Temple Pilots.
INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE An annual highlight of the Stampede is the Independence Day parade. As one of the largest 4th of July parades in Colorado, this tradition draws a crowd and provides fun for everyone.

ON RODEO-ING & FASHION WITH MISS RODEO COLORADO AND MISS RODEO AMERICA
Ashley Baller, the first Latina Miss Rodeo Colorado (MRC), was crowned Miss Rodeo Colorado during the 99th annual Greeley Stampede in 2021. Baller is originally from Parker, Colorado, but is set to travel more than 40,000 miles across the state during her year as MRC. Baller is a role model for cowgirls everywhere, and inspires other Latina cowgirls to set their sights high. Baller hopes to increase the collaboration between English and Spanish speakers in the western industry during her reign as MRC.

Q&A with the Queens
Photos by Diandra
Ashley Baller Miss Rodeo Colorado (MRC) 2021
WHAT IS YOUR RODEO-ING ‘ORIGIN’ STORY? I’m a first-generation cowgirl! I started riding at seven years old when my step grandpa taught me how to ride on his mare, Sassy. My grandparents then signed me up for 4-H, which kick-started my showing career. The rodeo queen bug bit me at 12 when I became the Elbert County Fair Princess. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING MRC? One memory that sticks out, in particular, is from a school visit in Denver. There was one little girl who asked me questions about how I earned the crown, where she can learn to ride horses, and how she can get involved with agriculture. Serving as a role model and inspiration for young girls is one of my favorite parts of my job. WHAT IS SOMETHING BEYOND RODEO YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT? I’m really proud of my culture and heritage! While obtaining my equine science degree at Colorado State University, I added a minor in Spanish because it was my grandma’s first language. As a first-generation cowgirl, I so deeply
want others to experience the benefits of this lifestyle. To be able to impact the longevity of our industry by using my Spanish and equine experience is a dream come true! HOW DO YOU BRING YOUR OWN SENSE OF FASHION TO THE MRC ROLE? I’ve always been a second hand, sales rack kind of gal. I grew up in a low-income family, so I did a lot of mix-n-matching to achieve my own glittery, sassy style. It pushed me to be extra creative with how I brought my style to life! I love variety, a lot of accessories and bold, colorful outfits. WHAT FASHION ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ALL THE COWGIRLS OUT THERE THAT LOOK UP TO YOU AS MRC? Fashion is a form of expression. I recommend allowing your fashion to compliment your personality, but also let it push your own personal boundaries as well. I always say, “look good, feel good, do good work.” When I’m confident in how I look and feel, I’m all the more empowered to let who I am shine. CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Crowned Miss Rodeo America (MRA) on December 5, 2021, Hailey Frederiksen, formerly Miss Rodeo Colorado, has become a formative representative for agriculture towns across the nation and a proud advocate for Greeley. WHAT IS YOUR RODEO-ING ‘ORIGIN’ STORY? I like to say that I knew how to ride before I could even walk. There are pictures of my mom holding me in the saddle with her at barrel races. I got my start in barrel racing at the ripe age of two in leadline classes, with my dad taking me around the barrels as fast as he could run.
Hailey Frederiksen Miss Rodeo America (MRA) 2021
HOW DO YOU BRING YOUR OWN STYLE TO THE MRA ROLE? Personality is shown through your character and your clothes, which you can clearly see with my fashion as Miss Rodeo America. I love anything that shines, is full of color, and has a timeless feel to it. It’s important to stay true to you, both in character and in your sense of fashion! WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ACCESSORIES? I have so many pieces that I love to wear, but my absolute favorite accessories are my rings. You’ll never not see my hands adorned in Montana Silversmiths rings! Rings are an easy way to dress up any outfit, in and out of the arena. WHAT FASHION ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COWGIRLS OUT THERE? Never wear something that you don’t feel absolutely beautiful and confident in. A good day starts with a good outfit, stay true to who you are, and your fashion sense will follow!

Timeless Cocktail Recipes from Kenny's Steakhouse ARTICLE BY CAITLYN OLSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADALYN SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY
Named in honor of Kenny Monfort, a pioneer in the cattle industry, Kenny’s Steakhouse has been rooted in the cowboy way of life since 1995. If there is one thing that Kenny’s knows best, it is how to serve cowboys across Northern Colorado. Though widely acknowledged for its high quality, homemade food, Kenny’s also serves refreshing cocktails making it the perfect waterhole for these warm summer afternoons.
The “New Old Fashioned” is a modern twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, incorporating locally made single barrel bourbon and Orange bitters to add a fruitful dimension to the hardy classic bourbon cocktail. The “Prickly Pear Margarita” will take you back to the Wild Wild West. Prickly pears are a pink fruit that grows on cacti, most commonly found in the deserts of Arizona. The sweet, candied flavor paired with the stunning pink look is sure to satisfy your cowboy taste buds. Cheers! CONTINUED >

EMMA STIENIKE BARREL RACING
Emma Stienike has been honing her skills and training her body for competition for nearly twenty years. At the age of three, Stienike mounted her first horse. By eighteen, she began traveling the country, competing professionally in barrel race competitions. “Barrel racing has shown me just how far dedication and perseverance can take you,” Stienike states. Competing almost every weekend locally, Stienike competes in two to three national competitions a year. Having competed at the Greeley Stampede PRCA rodeo in the past, Stienike says, “This rodeo is at the top of my list every year when I start planning pro rodeos to attend – it’s one of my favorites. The atmosphere is amazing, and it’s so close to home. Greeley really takes pride in the western lifestyle, and it shows by the rodeo they put on.” However, preparing for a barrel race or any rodeo event is no easy feat. Stienike prepares for her competitions by hitting the gym three times a week for lifting and cardio in order to build the muscle necessary for keeping up with her horse. To work on her
balance and flexibility and strengthen her core, Stienike practices yoga at least once a week. Though the hours in the gym don’t come close to the time, she puts in while preparing her horses in the arena and the pasture. “I try not to work them in the arena on the barrels every day, so I get them out into the pasture by long trotting or working cattle. Working them everyday reduces the chance of an injury happening inside the arena and builds their overall strength.” Though it’s not just the barrel racing that keeps Stienike close to her horses, “My favorite part about being a cowgirl is taking care of these animals and being around them every second of the day. I love the western lifestyle and how rewarding it is – especially when it comes to breeding.” Stienike has made raising horses and barrel riding her cowgirl way of life and says she “wouldn’t have it any other way.” For an inside look into Stienike’s fitness routine, check out these four workouts that she uses to prepare for a day in the arena. 01 // Building back muscles are important because of how much I use them when riding, even working with horses on the ground. The key is to pull down slowly while keeping your body straight and upright.
STIENIKE’S PRE-RACE WORKOUT 04 // WALK
02 // I use a lot of leg pressure on my horses, so I need to build muscles in my legs and low back. I warm up with the bar and then add 10 pounds each round, 4 sets of 10. Get low on the squat, and as you come up from the squat, dip your heels into the ground. 03 // This yoga pose is my favorite because it opens up my chest and shoulder area. I hold a lot of tension in this area, so it helps release anything I’m holding on to. I also have felt like my spine is more flexible and builds my upper back muscles. 04 // My mind needs to reset when preparing for a barrel race, and walking helps me bring my focus back and strengthen my mind. Your mindset plays a huge role in anything you do, so having a healthy one and setting goals are important. Take a walk, even if it’s just for 5 minutes.

Driver’s Notebook Every Cowboy Needs a Toyota Tundra In 1956, Disney featured a film named “A Cowboy Needs a Horse.” Over 70 years later, that fact holds true. In 2022 however, every cowboy also needs a Toyota Tundra. The 2022 Toyota Tundra was designed, engineered, and built in the United States specifically for the men and women across America who frequent dirt roads – whether by saddle or truck. The Tundra offers a comfortable ride that might just make you want to leave your saddle behind for the day and get behind the wheel of your brand new Toyota Tundra.

Yesterday's Heroes of the Stampede Hundreds of people have come together over the past 100 years to make the Greeley Stampede the family-fun event that people from all over the state look forward to every year. From the Staff to the volunteers, rodeo queens and rodeo clowns, each person who has given their time to the Greeley Stampede deserves to be recognized for the part they’ve played in helping usher the Greeley Stampede into a new century. Today, we recognize two heroes who have helped the Stampede in two very unique ways – Nyla Bristow, long time rodeo queen and volunteer, and Tom Feller, seasoned rodeo clown.
Since 1976, Nyla Bristow has worn many hats for the Greeley Stampede as Independence Stampede Queen (76-77), Wrangler (since 1977), Former Stampede Rider, Member of the Stampede Foundation, currently serving as President, and the first and only female member of the 2021 Stampede Hall of Fame Class. “As the bicentennial was a landmark in 1976 when I was Independence Stampede Queen, the 100th marks another landmark that is exciting to recognize. To know that this celebration has maintained and thrived for that many years is so gratifying,” Bristow says. “The Stampede is a truly unifying multicultural gathering that draws in people from all walks of life!

In 1981, Feller was recognized as the PRCA’s Clown of the Year and selected to work the National Finals Rodeo. Feller was a part of the Greeley Stampede for 13 consecutive years and even came back as a special guest clown for the Stampede’s 75th anniversary, now 25 years ago. When asked what he is looking forward to in the Greeley Stampede’s next 100 years, Feller said: “100 more!”

A Stage for the Stars THE COMMUNITY'S NEW STAGE WILL CONTINUE TO BRING IN BIG NAME ARTISTS AND EVENTS FOR ALL OF WELD COUNTY
ARTICLE BY MATILDA PREISENDORF PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The annual Greeley Stampede has always been full of top artists and record-breaking rodeo events, but the biggest show in Weld County is going to get even bigger to mark its celebratory 100th year. A brand new stage for concerts and events will be ready just in time for the 2022 stampede season. The $2.5 million stage will be better than ever and twice as large as the current portable stage. The new space will also include extra amenities for artists, such as a loading dock, green rooms, showers, state-of-the-art theater lighting, and new sound equipment. Not only will the stage make concert setup easier for artists, but it will also allow for larger capacities in the arena welcoming more fans and concert-goers.
94
O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN
“It’s going to really help the stampede get bigger and better,” Greeley Stampede general manager Justin Watada said. The new stage is co-sponsored by JBS, the City of Greeley, and Weld County. The plans for this stage have been in talk for many years, but it will soon become a reality for the city. The stage construction was delayed for two years because of COVID-19, but the long wait has been worth it. Along with the new stage, there will also be improvements made to the west club level. These new updates will offer guests a memorable experience that will draw them back year after year. After stampede season ends, the stage space will be donated back to the City of Greeley in
hopes of bringing in more concerts and event opportunities throughout the year. Bringing more concerts to Greeley is something residents have been looking forward to and will not only give more money to the city but will continue to bring the community together. “It’s one of Greeley’s crown jewels,” Watada said. “We want to continue to improve it.” With the new stage and updated club level, stampede-goers will have one more exciting addition to look forward to at this year’s 100th Greeley stampede. The $2.5 million project is supported by JBS, the City of Greeley, Weld County, and the Greeley Stampede.

To support our community and students pursuing higher education by awarding scholarships & grants. The Greeley Stampede Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, was established in 2001 to grant higher education scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The first scholarship given was for $500, and the Foundation now awards $50,000 annually to deserving graduating Weld County high school seniors and provides additional grants for education programs like the Greeley Evans School District 6 Back-To-School Event, Poudre Learning Center, and Success Foundation. Funding for the Greeley Stampede Foundation scholarships comes from three annual events produced by the Greeley Stampede: the Stampede Golf Tournament, the Western Art Show & Gala, and the Big Buckle Ball. Proceeds from these popular events have funded more than $665,000 in scholarships to 644 well deserving Northern Colorado students since its inception.
2022 All Around Scholarship Recipients - $5,000 Thanks to JBS and their Hometown Strong initiative, they have matched the Foundations $50,000 high school seniors scholarship fund to total $100,000 to celebrate 100 years of the Greeley Stampede. This will make this year’s scholarships now worth $5,000 each!
