FOR JOHN STACY, OWNER OF PEEK’S FLOOR CO., YOU COULD SAY THE FLOORING BUSINESS RUNS IN HIS BLOOD. Upon his return from Vietnam in 1969, John’s father, John R. Stacy, began working in the flooring industry as a carpet salesman, working up through the ranks until 1988 when he founded S & H Distributing with a partner. In 1998, S & H Flooring became the contract and retail division of the company. In 2016, Stacy’s family business, Stacy & Associates, acquired Peek’s Floor Co.’s brand and their five locations in Richardson, University Park, Frisco, Grapevine and Flower Mound. “We acquired Peek’s to expand our footprint in the DFW retail market,” John says. The entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well for Massey Peek when, in 1969, he opened a small flooring business in Dallas. After several changes in ownership, Peek's Floor Co. is now owned by the Stacy family, where personal service and quality products are of utmost concern. “My sister, Rachel, is our operation director. 'The Boss,' my brother, Matt, is in charge of product and business development,” John says. “If I had only one title it would most likely be sales manager. My mother, Ann, is in charge of our family charitable contributions. My wife, Brandee, coordinates our corporate functions and holiday parties, and my dad, JRS, watches the money. He still signs the vast majority of the checks, looking for errors and issues.” Since 1969, Peek’s Floor Co. has been synonymous with quality retail flooring in DFW. Wine Fusion is decorated black and silver with a blue-lit bar, accented by wine barrels and a wall featuring rows and rows of top-quality wine. Established in 2015, Wine Fusion had their two-year anniversary in October. The owners, Nick Kaufman and his wife, Danielle, wanted to find a way to bring the "elite" world of wine down to a personal level. Nick grew up around wine as a grocery store manager and was heavily influenced by his mother, a true lover of wine. He has since become a sommelier (a wine steward), and in 2013 hired a team of award-winning winemakers to start his enterprise. The place is about as relaxed as you could possibly imagine, while still serving choice wines and food served on cute Texas-shaped plates. Most unique of all, however, is the wine mixing classes. If someone’s looking for a bachelorette party, birthday party or even a corporate bonding event with a bit of a twist, they can make a reservation to attend one of Wine Fusion’s wine mixing classes. Classes are set in the urban tasting room, a room separated by a glass door that seats about 40 people. An instructor educates guests about the many wines on offer and then allows each person to try their hand at mixing a concoction, which can easily turn into a friendly competition for making the tastiest beverage. Once a guest decides whether to make a white or red wine blend, the hands-on experience begins! After tasting, mixing and tasting some more, guests can bottle their creation and take it home. These classes are offered seven days a week and last about 1 1/2 hours. The cost is $65 a person, which includes taxes and 20 percent gratuity for the instructor. Wine Fusion is also known to travel to conferences. Altogether, Wine Fusion has earned approximately 11 medals for their wines. It offers 18 different kinds; the most popular is Fusion Red Blend, which features fan-favorite wines cabernet and zinfandel. It has a high 14.1 alcohol content for wine but has a smooth and fruity taste with a healthy balance between sweet and dry. Prices vary widely between wines—the cheapest bottle is $25 (Chardonnay, for example) while the most expensive bottle is $145 (Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon). A single glass of wine typically ranges between $8-$11. They do have specials for tastings, charging $11 for a taste of any five wines beneath the sweet or dry labels on their menu. Despite being known for their wines, Wine Fusion also has a small offering of food, including hummus and pita chips ($8) and a charcuterie board for two ($21) or four people ($36). This board features a variety of meats, nuts and cheeses such as blue cheese crumbles. In comparison, their catering menu is much larger and features items such as smoked salmon ($14) and a fajita bar ($14). Wine Fusion also offers a two bottle membership as part of their Wine Club. For $30 a month, members receive two bottles of wines of their choice that are normally priced $25 or less. Members also reap in other benefits such as saving 20 percent on barrel blending classes and all purchases of wine and food. BUILDING A UNIQUE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE IS MORE THAN JUST DECIDING BETWEEN SALT WATER OR CHLORINE AND STONES OR CEMENT. Justin and Courtney Sanders, the husbandand-wife team behind Grapevine Pool and Spa, believe the key to crafting custom, low-maintenance pools is becoming well-acquainted with a family’s style and needs. THE BUSINESS

“We are longtime Grapevine residents,” Courtney says. “My husband is a Grapevine High School graduate. We absolutely love this city and everything that it offers. That is why we knew there was nowhere else better to establish our business. My husband, Justin, is the owner of the company. He is the logistical and mechanical expert, and I am the designer. Our different gifts are what make us such a great team.” THE PLANNING

Phase one begins with a meeting at the family’s home. Courtney says they get the ball rolling by asking dozens of questions. “This time with them gives me an idea of their style, and what types of materials will match their home, taste and yard,” she says. “At this point, I draw a design and share it with Justin. He points out any areas that don't make sense logistically, or that will be hard to keep clean, so we can determine the best design. This is something that sets us apart. Most people design a pool that looks good, but how much will they enjoy it if they can't keep it clean? Lastly, I provide the customer with 3-D renderings of what the pool will look like in their backyard.” THE PROJECT

“This pool, in particular, is one of our favorite pools because of all the different elements used in the design,” Courtney says. “The combination of fire elements against the water is stunning. I also love the use of different colors of travertine and leuders. We used beautiful glass tile on the recessed spa, both tanning ledges and all of the steps and benches. There are also glass beads mixed in the plaster throughout the pool which makes the water sparkle in the sun. "The water feature is a 5-foot-long stainless steel sheer descent that makes a beautiful sheet of water, which adds to both the sound and look of the pool. The entire outdoor living area is beautifully enhanced with lighting in the steps, walls and flower beds. The 16-foot outdoor kitchen includes all the amenities, even an icemaker. And, for chilly nights, a custom bench around the modern fire pit. This yard, with its space, elevation changes and gorgeous view, allowed us to do multiple levels of seating, entertaining areas and landscaping.” THE TECHNOLOGY

Form meets function with this pool. Courtney says its colorful, high-tech features can be activated at the touch of a button, including the electronic firebowls. “Another button allows them to choose what color they would like the pool and spa to be at night,” she says. “They can also choose from a rainbow of colors or a light show that rotates through them all. With an outdoor space like this, why do you even need to go in the house?”

Courtney describes the backyard as having a “natural modern” vibe. “The space is full of natural stone,” she says. “Every part of the pool and outdoor living space is comprised of straight lines and 90-degree angles that perfectly line up with the house and provide beautiful sight lines from inside the home. The homeowners were looking for a space to entertain their friends and enjoy time with their children.” THE TIMELINE

It took a total of three months to complete this pool, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The Sanders began building just after the record flooding on Lake Grapevine took place. “It took about four months to get through the Corps of Engineers planning and permitting process,” Courtney says. “As you can imagine, they had more important issues to deal with than swimming pools. Once they approved our plans, we were able to proceed with city permitting. This is where most homeowners actually start their journey.
