Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) on any of 300+ Grand Mesa Lakes, technical rock climbing in Unaweep Canyon or within the Colorado National monument, exploring prehistoric fossils and more recent history among the Museums of Western Colorado, endless variety seems to be the at the heart of Summer exploration in our area of western Colorado.

Since 2020, when we first began bringing stories of the GRAND things Mesa County has to enjoy, we have barely begun to scratch the surface of the rich history and culture that makes this place truly grand.

The physical, mental and emotional wellness benefits of exploring are countless.

Winding roads call to those who appreciate the joy of driving. From quick lunchtime escapes to day-long journeys, the region around Grand Junction offers a variety of scenic routes for every kind of adventure. Driver’s Therapy, a local Grand Junction YouTube channel, has curated some of the best drives—and posted pointof-view videos of these routes on the Driver’s Therapy YouTube channel.

Quick Escape – 45 minutes on Rim Rock Drive Just south of town lies the Colorado National Monument, home to the breathtaking Rim Rock Drive. This 23-mile paved road twists through dramatic landscapes, climbing steeply in its first few miles and threading through short tunnels carved through the historic rocks. Over a dozen scenic pulloffs offer sweeping views of canyons, cliffs, and desert flora. Along the route, cars glide through sandstone corridors and around graceful corners, creating a driving experience as smooth as it is memorable. Sometimes, big horn sheep even make an appearance, adding extra excitement to the trip.

Notes: The upper sections of Rim Rock Drive may close in winter, and lower sections may be sanded to prevent icing. The Visitor Center houses the only restrooms.

Half-Day Adventure – 2.5 hours round-trip to Gateway Gateway, Colorado, is only 50 miles from Grand Junction, and CO-141 delivers an unforgettable drive. The route begins just past Whitewater and quickly sheds all traces of city life. It first hugs a creek through a winding canyon, then CONTINUED >

rises dramatically before opening into farmland and wide-open meadows surrounded by craggy peaks.

Depending on seasonal operation hours, a stop at the Paradox Grille at Gateway Canyons Resort adds a relaxing pause, with lunch options like burgers, salads, and fish and chips. A stroll through the beautifully landscaped resort grounds is a perfect way to stretch out before the return drive.

Those with extra time can continue toward Naturita, where the canyon walls deepen into rich reds, transforming the scenery once again.

Notes: There are no gas stations between Whitewater and Gateway, but there is a small gas station just before the resort.

panoramic views across the valley, eventually winding through the charming towns of Cedaredge and Orchard City. Dining options and a touch of small-town charm make this a wellrounded journey. The return can follow the same route or loop through Delta.

Notes: Fuel is available in Mesa, plus towns on the south side. Park-style restrooms are scattered along the route.

Half-Day Adventure – 2.5 hours round-trip over the Grand Mesa To the east, the Grand Mesa offers another captivating option. Beginning at Exit 49 on I-70, CO-65 stretches about 60 miles one way, climbing steadily through sweeping curves toward the town of Mesa. From there, the road ascends to the top of the “world’s largest flat-top mountain.” Thick stands of aspen trees—especially brilliant in autumn’s yellow—line much of the route, then give way to recreational alpine lakes and wide meadows across the top of the mountain.

All-Day Expedition – 4 hours round-trip via UT-128 to Moab While most travelers reach Moab via I-70 and US-191, the more scenic option is UT-128, accessible from Exit 204 off of I-70. This 105mile route follows the Colorado River through a changing landscape that begins with rolling desert and transitions into red rock canyons and towering formations.

The drive hugs the river, passing campgrounds and trailheads, and showcases the natural beauty of the region. Though slower than the main highway, this route turns the drive into a destination of its own—ideal for a full-day escape that blends driving pleasure with natural wonder.

Notes: There are no gas stations or services along this route.

BODY AND MIND BETTERMENT THROUGH NEW EXPERIENCES

Is it time to break free from your comfort zone? Finding a new place to visit, choosing a different recipe to cook, or engaging in a different activity, trying something new, really can improve health. Similar to how lifting heavy weights strengthen muscles, making new memories can strengthen your resilience, reconnect your heart with joy, improve mental and emotional health, and give various positive physical health outcomes.

I have a new healthy hobby of my own - beekeeping. No one was more surprised that I became a beekeeper. It happened quite naturally, though, when my son and I bonded over bee videos on YouTube. Within my new hobby, I have experienced the physical benefits in that I have learned how to strengthen my back and use my core more effectively (each box of a hive can weigh up to 80 pounds!). Since I believe the bees can sense my energy, I only open the hive when I am feeling calm and centered, which has trained me to engage my breath differently and use varying meditative techniques. Let me tell you, it takes a different mind space for thousands of buzzing bees to be swirling around me during a hive inspection or collecting honey! Furthermore, by virtue of learning something new, I have forced my brain to think differently.

Perhaps the most beneficial health outcome of taking up beekeeping is how it has inspired me to believe in myself more and how it has opened my eyes to the innate intelligence of our world.

Wondering where to start to get outside of your comfort zone?

Know this, the health benefits are there whether you start on a smaller or larger scale. Trying something as small as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand or driving a different route to a regular destination yields positive effects for sharpening brain CONTINUED >

functions. This is likely due to a process called neuroplasticity, which causes your brain to form new neural pathways.

Another hack to branching out from your comfort zone is to consider what brings you joy and excitement. Tired of drinking the same morning brew? Think of something new to drink upon waking. Do you love watching wildlife? Simply sit in your backyard and see what you notice crawling on the ground or flying in the air. Taking a bigger leap outside of your comfort zone may look like exploring a new park for your daily walk or trying a whole new activity that has piqued your interest but you have not before found the time or courage to try. Finally, it can be helpful to think about what brings meaning to your life and find ways to engage in that, such as volunteering, going back to school, joining clubs or engaging in new social circles.

For a majority of us, our normal routines involve being immersed in our computers or cellphones. While the benefits of these devices are appreciable, they also challenge our attention spans and our ability to experience joy in the beauty that surrounds us. Getting out in nature can reset our nervous and endocrine systems to support increased health. Most who read this live in beautiful Western Colorado. We could not be more blessed than to have the great outdoors at our fingertips. From experiencing nature in the desert landscapes, forested areas of mountains, to our beautiful parks and riverfront trails, opportunities to feel one with nature are endless.

Immersing yourself in nature is a surefire way to reap health benefits. Find a natural setting, such as a backyard, park, or hiking trail, to calm the body and mind and find relief from sensory overload. Being there (without your phone in hand) will increase your ability to focus more effectively and enhance your ability to experience joy.

Being outside naturally leads to increased physical activity which can reduce cortisol levels, boost cardiovascular health, increase Vitamin D levels which enhances immune function and mood. Additionally, taking in sunlight can act as your own personal battery pack by boosting energy levels and regulating sleep cycles.

Unable to get outside to experience a new physical adventure?

Simply standing or sitting on the ground provides the health benefits of grounding, which connects your body to the natural electric charge of the earth. Doing so can reduce inflammation, ease the effects of stress on the nervous system, and improve sleep. You can also reap the benefits of having a new experience by simply using your imagination. That is because the brain and body respond identically to reality and to imagination.

So there you have it. Try something new, enjoy life, and explore the world around you. Your mind, body and spirit will thank you for it!

Silvery frost dusts the wild strawberries of predawn light at 10,700 feet, as the pine boughs creak in the breeze. Looking out over the dark ribbon of trail comprised of volcanic soil and weathered roots, it is hard to imagine that this trail, atop the "world’s largest flat-top mountain", ends at the banks of the Colorado River in a sweltering high desert over 30 miles and nearly 7,000 feet below.

The Palisade Plunge - a 32-mile point-topoint trail descends from the alpine forest of the Grand Mesa, passing through stands of pine, aspens, oak brush, pinyon, junipers and finally, the cottonwoods lining the Colorado River. The "Plunge" is a beautiful, unique, and exciting route regarded by many as an “adventure route”. It does not simply descend uninterrupted from the top of the Mesa to the Colorado River, it traverses, climbs, and descends all along the route.

The initial 12 miles - from Mesa Top Trailhead at 10,730 feet, beginning near the high point on the Grand Mesa just off Highway 65 - descends approximately 800 vertical feet as it takes riders through open parks carpeted in wildflowers and willows winding through dark stands of pine.

As the trail nears the edge of the Grand Mesa, it crosses Lands End Road and drops into the Shirttail Point trailhead at an elevation of 9,900ft. This segment of the Plunge, referred to as Otto’s Wall, is named after the environmental steward and explorer John Otto. In the early 1900’s John Otto blasted a trail into the cliffside.

Since this section is listed on the National Register of Historic places, the builders of the Palisade Plunge were required to maintain the width and pitch of the original trail, making the switchbacks on this section extremely tight and steep. This short section is one of the most strenuous sections of the Plunge. It travels over and between massive boulders and sections of crushed stone. Short, punchy climbs add to the difficulty. Once the trail meets Lands End Road, there is a Plunge kiosk and a small area to take a break before the final drop.

This final segment takes riders from an elevation of just over 9,000 feet to the Colorado River over 4,000 vertical feet below. This final 16 miles of the Palisade Plunge is the most popular among riders CONTINUED >

who enjoy technical descents. It is also the first section to open in the late spring/early summer after the seasonal closure ends (December 1st through April 30th). After a short climb, the trail descends a series of swooping, machine-built switchbacks. The trail levels out briefly, weaving through large boulders before crossing Whitewater Creek, the only reliable water source before the trail’s end. This is the last opportunity to filter water, and stocking up here is strongly encouraged as the trail will soon descend into the desert below where temperatures can reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The next seven miles traverse the flanks of the Grand Mesa, losing very little in the way of elevation, peppered with steep, short climbs. The end of these seven miles is highlighted by two slickrock play areas separated by a short descent where riders can see the town of Palisade in the valley below. Just after the slickrock area is a final kiosk, from this kiosk, there are just over five miles to the end of the single track and the Colorado River Below.

*Check the forecast and plan to start early in the day to avoid the afternoon heat at the end of the ride. * You may encounter wildlife, including moose, elk, black bear, mountain lion, bobcat, coyote, mule deer, lizards, and snakes.

(Keeping a safe distance and not harassing wildlife is not only smart, it's also the law.)

This final stretch descends nearly 3,000 feet as the trail switchbacks down a sandstone and scree covered ridge. There is a lot of exposure in the final miles and riders should gauge their own comfort with riding or walking. Along the way, there are many rock armored corners and chutes from here to the end as well as places where the trail weaves through large sandstone boulders. The Plunge briefly intersects the Palisade Rim trail before it makes its final descent through a dry wash area that changes from year to year depending on how much the monsoons alter this last section. The trail ends at Highway 24, along the Colorado River offering riders a chance to cool off before they head into Palisade for a well-earned meal and refreshments.

Know Before You Go: • The entire 32 miles of the Palisade Plunge can take riders up to eight hours. Bring over 100 ounces of water and a reliable water filter, electrolytes, and plenty of food.

• The final 16 miles to Palisade has a single bailout, marked with numerous signs. Use the bailout if too fatigued or if you have run out of water.

• Make sure you are physically fit enough to safely finish this ride. Be prepared to walk, there are multiple areas of high consequence exposure and technical sections.

• Make sure your bike is mechanically sound and you have tools, spare tubes, and a pump.

• Wear shoes you can walk steep sections of trail in and prepare to get wet crossing Whitewater Creek.

• This ride can be done on anything from a hard tail to a 160mm travel bike and anything in between.

For many, the awe of the night sky starts in childhood. I remember when I was small, loving the night sky. I grew up in Northern Colorado in a small town near Rocky Mountain National Park. We were high in the Rockies away from the lights of any city.

When it was dark, it was really dark, but that made it so much easier to see the sky dance with beautiful twinkling diamonds. The constellations stood out and were easy to find.

And on more than one occasion we would watch falling stars plummet to the earth. I loved the sky then and 50 years later I am still in love with its wonder and beauty.

It doesn't take much to get started with stargazing. Whether you're looking for specific constellations, spotting planets with the naked eye or looking for a galaxy far, far away using a telescope, there are a lot of ways you can observe the wonders of the universe.

Here are a few simple tips on how to start deepening your connection with the cosmos.

1. Find a dark-sky site: We are pretty lucky around here with having multiple options to choose from on where to go to stargaze. The Colorado National Monument, Glade Park, The Mesa, and if you want to travel a little further, the Uncompahgre or any mountain range close by. You can even check with an astronomy club in the area to see where they suggest. The key is to get away from the light pollution of the city. Leave your electronics in your vehicle or pocket. The light from them is even too bright and can ruin your night vision. Use a red flashlight to read your star charts if need be.

2. Get Oriented: Learn where North, South, East and West are from your location. The planets rise in the east and set in the west just like the sun and moon. Learn which stars and constellations are visible as the seasons change. The position of planets is often described in relation to these standards. Sky positions are measured in degrees. The horizon is 0 degrees and directly overhead would be 90 degrees.

3. Equipment: There is no equipment necessary to get acquainted with the night sky. However, if you want to really get involved with astronomy, the most useful piece of equipment nowadays is a good smartphone application. Binoculars give you a better view of night sky objects and are reasonably priced and easy

to carry. However, a telescope will allow you to see much more than the naked eye does. Planetary features like the craters of the moon and Saturn's rings are easily visible using a telescope. Start with a smaller one which tends to be easier to operate and travel with. Once you get hooked, you can start to research for something bigger and better to accommodate your stargazing needs.

4. Be Faithful to the Sky: One of the greatest things about becoming a stargazer is that you make a life-long friend. Once you start watching, be patient and persistent. If you watch regularly, you will learn and see how the sky changes in subtle ways from day to day and year to year. Once you start looking up and noticing, you will eventually make a connection with nature that will last your whole life long.

Western Colorado is brimming with multiple ways to explore. From biking, hiking, fishing, rafting the rivers, and camping, we have it all. One of the most fun things to do, especially with little kids, is hiking. You could, quite literally, go somewhere new every time, all summer long. With Colorado's majestic beauty, you are always in for a treat when exploring outdoors.

Here are 7 options to choose from that will give you a variety of time, distance and challenge.

1. No Thoroughfare Canyon Trail is a beautiful 5.6 mile round trip hike that takes 2 1/2 hours. It is considered a moderately challenging route and is very popular for hiking and walking. March through October are prime months to visit this hike. The trail is along the canyon wash which includes two pools and a waterfall, which are sometimes full of water depending on recent rainfall and time of year. There are signs along the way to mark the pools and waterfall. The beautiful backdrop to this hike is the rock formations. Be careful, there tends to be some rocky spots, so wear shoes with good traction. Leave your pups at home, dogs are not allowed on this hike. This hike shares a trailhead with the Devil's Kitchen Trail in the Colorado National Monument. Flash floods can be a hazard so always check the weather before you go.

2. Mica Mines Trail is also considered a moderately challenging hike off of Little Park Road. Round trip distance is 2.7 miles and takes a little longer than an hour to do. This hike is best enjoyed between March and July.

The trail follows along the creek bed and has several water crossings. It opens up to the Wingate cliffs and has amazing views. One of the best parts of this hike is the stone protrusion which looks like a giant stairway.

Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be leashed.

3. Devil's Kitchen Trail is 1.1 mile round trip hike that is also in the Colorado National Monument. It is also considered moderately challenging but on the easier side of moderate and is a very popular trail. The trailhead has limited parking, however there is more parking available about 1/4 miles away with restrooms available as well as picnic tables. March through October is the optimal time to visit the trail, and there is nothing disappointing in the views this hike provides. No dogs allowed.

4. Palisade Rim Trail takes about 1 1/2 hours and is 3 miles round trip. Once again this is a moderately challenging trail and is not only popular for hiking but also mountain biking, trail running and birding. Dogs are allowed on this trail and can even be off leash in some parts. April through October are the best times to give this trail a try. Be careful as this hike has some rocky terrain and it also has switchbacks and moderate elevation gains. This trail offers the opportunity to see a multitude of different animals. From Golden eagles to lizards, you won't be disappointed. The amazing petroglyphs are visible from the top as well as a breathtaking view of Palisade.

5. Monument Canyon Loop Trail takes about 2 hours to do and is a 4.5-mile round trip hike. March through November is the best time to visit this trail. This is a trail that provides spectacular views of the Monument.

Please wear shoes with good traction as this trail has steep climbs and slippery descents and hiking poles are suggested. Like the Palisade Rim Trail, wildlife is often spotted, but, on this trail, you have the opportunity to possibly see some bighorn sheep! Please leave pets at home, as dogs are not allowed on this hike either.

6. Coke Ovens Trail is considered an easy trail and is less than a mile round trip. It takes around 30 minutes

and a fun hike to do with the kids all year round. Wildlife like deer and bighorn sheep are sometimes seen as you hike the trail. The giant cone shaped rock formations are stunning as well as the views of Monument Canyon.

Leave the dogs at home, they are not allowed on this trail either.

7. Canyon Rim Trail to Window Rock is an easy 1.8 mile trail that takes less than an hour which makes it ideal for families with young children all year long.

This trail is popular as well and provides an overlook where you can get up close to the edge and take in the stunning views of the canyon. The unique Window rock formation as well as the monoliths like the Kissing Couple, Praying Hands, Pipe Organ, Sentinel Spire and the amazing Independence Monument, are awe inspiring. No dogs allowed on this hike.

These 7 hikes are just the tip of the iceberg! There are so many options to choose from, but please plan accordingly, as this area can change in an instant and you can find yourself in a bind if you aren't careful.

Take lots of water to avoid dehydration and remember, sunscreen is a must as well. Take snacks to fuel up on and take breaks often to not get overheated or over exhausted and take your time. There is much fun to be had exploring Western Colorado one hike at a time! Be safe and enjoy exploring!

Before you head out on your adventure, here is a super easy delicious trail mix you can make with the kids.

Apricot Chia No-Bake Homemade Energy Bars Delicious Details: • Store well. You can make a few batches at a time because they can be kept at room temperature for several days, or even refrigerated or frozen for longer storage.

• Allergy-friendly. This recipe naturally contains no gluten, nuts, or eggs. You can also make them

dairy free by using non-dairy white chocolate or just omitting those ingredients What You’ll Need: It only takes minutes to make this sweet and chewy snack with just a bit of crunch. Perfectly portable, plus they are gluten free, vegan, and nut-free.

Be sure to read the labels for cross-contamination risks so that you can ensure they are gluten free, if needed.

Ingredients: • 1 cup Medjool dates pitted • 1 cup dried apricots • 2 Tablespoons chia seeds • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • 1 cup raw pumpkin seeds/pepitas • 2 Tablespoons white chocolate chips (use vegan, if desired) Instructions: • Line a 8×8 or 9×9 square pan with wax or paper.

• Place dates, apricots, chia seeds and cinnamon in a food processor, and process until the mixture forms a large mass.

• Break up slightly with a spatula, add pepitas to the mixture in the food processor, and pulse until there are small chunks of pepitas.

• Break up the mixture one more time, add white chocolate chips and pulse a few times to slightly break and distribute the chips.

• Press the mixture into the prepared pan. You can cover the top with more paper and press an equal sized pan to roll the top with a glass to flatten completely.

• Refrigerate for 30-45 minutes, then slice into bars or squares.

• Bag for easy grab and go.

THE “HERBAL COCONUT” PIÑA COLADA

This sangria emphasizes fresh garden herbs and the sweetness of seasonal berries.

Ingredients: • 1 bottle wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio or Garnacha) • ½ cup brandy or rum • ½ cup elderflower liqueur • 1 cup sparkling water • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced • ½ cup fresh raspberries • ½ cup fresh blueberries • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced (optional) • 1 lime, thinly sliced

Instructions: Muddle the mint and basil leaves in the bottom of the blender. Add the remaining ingredients and ice.

Blend until smooth and pour into a glass. Garnish with fresh fruit and herbs

Ingredients: • 2 oz. Coconut Rum • 1 oz. Pineapple Juice • .5 oz Coconut water • 1 oz. Cream of Coconut.

• A few fresh mint leaves • Optional: A few fresh basil leaves.

• Ice • Garnish: Mint sprig, and a pineapple chunk.

Instructions: In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, brandy (or rum), and elderflower liqueur. Stir gently to mix.

Add the sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint leaves, rosemary sprigs, and cucumber slices to the pitcher. Gently muddle the berries and herbs slightly to release their flavors. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, add the sliced lime and sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently. Serve the sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets a mix of fruit and herbs.

This cocktail balances the tartness of grapefruit, the sweetness of pear, and the distinct notes of rosemary, all brought together with a bubbly finish.

Ingredients: • 2 oz Gin (or Vodka) • 1.5 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice • 1 oz Pear Liqueur (or Pear Juice) • 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice • 1 sprig of Rosemary • Sparkling water • Garnish: Rosemary sprig, grapefruit slice, pear slice Instructions: Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled.

Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.

A Lime Mint Rose Mojito adds a floral twist to the classic mojito, creating a refreshing and elegant cocktail.

Here’s a recipe that balances the traditional lime and mint with the delicate aroma of rose.

Ingredients: • 10 fresh mint leaves • 1 lime, cut into wedges • 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste) • 2 ounces white rum • 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent) • Club soda or sparkling water • Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional)

“BERRY BLISS” VODKA COCKTAIL This cocktail combines the sweetness of berries with the herbaceous notes of fresh herbs, creating a refreshing and sophisticated drink.

Ingredients: • For the Berry Basil Infusion: • 1 cup mixed fresh berries (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries) • 6 fresh basil leaves (or rosemary if desired) • 1 cup vodka (a high-quality vodka is recommended) • For the Cocktail: • 2 oz berry basil infused vodka • 1 oz fresh lemon juice • 0.75 oz simple syrup • Sparkling water • Garnish: fresh berries, basil or rosemary sprigs Instructions: Infuse the Vodka: In a glass jar, combine the fresh berries and basil leaves.Pour the vodka over the berries and basil, ensuring they are fully submerged.

Seal the jar and let it infuse for at least 24 hours, or up to 3 days, in the refrigerator.

Strain the infused vodka through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the solids.

Preparation: In a cocktail shaker, combine the berry basil infused vodka, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup. Add ice. Strain the mixture into glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water and garnish with fresh berries and a basil or rosemary sprig.
