Local Love Love gets a lot of attention in February, to be sure. There are many different types of love described in the Greek language with each having its own unique word. Two, in particular, stand out this month: Eros means the physical and emotional attraction and deep personal connection of romantic love. Agape is the word for universal love, otherwise known as compassion and empathy. Valentine’s Day brings a renewed emphasis on the energy surrounding romantic love and gestures of affection like the gifts, flowers, romantic dinners and poetry that may be less frequent the rest of the year. Our “Local Love” issue also seeks out a few things to highlight that make our area special in the ways we build those agape connections in our community. Sometimes simply highlighting local talent adds to the feeling of being better connected. We wish you, our community, a happy Valentine’s Day and hope you find deeper community connections as well through your involvement with the limitless talent and good works of the lifestyle we enjoy in Mesa County. The first is the Blue Pig Gallery, located at the center of downtown Palisade. It was founded in 2007 and features more than 65 Colorado artists. Is there a type of art you’ve always wanted to try? Blue Pig offers workshops for artists of all mediums, age groups, and ability levels. If you are an established local artist, apply for a display space on their site! Another Palisade gallery is the Craig Gallery of Fine Art. They display art made by over 20 local artists. They also host several events throughout the year to promote their artists and to sponsor local nonprofits. Uncanny Valley Art Gallery is a nonprofit gallery. They have a unique paint splatter room available to use and a canvas dryer so you can take home your masterpiece of the same day. Unique from other galleries in the area, they also include uncensored art. Come back during the First Friday Art Walk of every month to see new local displays! Black Poppy on Main Street is a women-owned custom print shop that is also home to the work of several local artists. Do you have a special someone but need some inspiration for where to go for a great evening? Here are some fun local date nights.
HIKES
Let’s start off the list with Grand Junction’s pastime, hiking! While several favorite trails are still snowed in this time of year, there are dozens more ready to be explored. Rattlesnake Canyon has a few different trails and is perfect for dry winter days. Be sure to check the weather and directions though, because the road might be too muddy at times. Opal Hill is a loop a little under 3 miles and is open year-round. If you go after a rainstorm, you may even be able to see the opals this hike was named for! Dinosaur Hill is an easy, 1.5-mile loop. You can see exposed molds of dinosaur bones and learn about how they were extracted through the well-kept information signs. If your Valentine’s Day will include young ones, this is a great option for a fun outing for all involved! Riverfront Trail in the Redlands is great if you can’t get out of town but want to be

surrounded by nature. Most of the trails are paved and flat and there are several parking areas throughout.

Early on the morning of a recent Special Olympics ski competition in Colorado, one of the coaches from the team in Grand Junction received a text from his oldest athlete who suffers from severe anxiety. This athlete has been on the team for several years, practicing with 31 other skiers and snowboarders and more than 20 volunteer coaches on the largest team in the state, sponsored by Colorado Discover Ability. On that early morning, the athlete texted, “I got my rocket boots on, and my skies are ready. All I need is someone to light my rockets!” This athlete — and his newly gained confidence — is just one success story from Colorado Discover Ability, a program in Mesa County that is on a mission to increase the independence, self-confidence, and self-worth of people with disabilities through outdoor recreation. Many athletes like this skier would not otherwise be able to participate were it not for a dedicated group of women giving love back to their local community in the form of an annual grant program.

“With the help of the Junior Service League, and their support through grants over the years, we have been able to expand the number of young adults, teens, and children involved in adaptive outdoor sports and recreational experiences,” said Sherry Schreiner, a board member with Colorado Discover Ability. Junior Service League (JSL) is a nonprofit service organization in Grand Junction that was founded in 1983. It is a group of involved women who are committed to working together to improve the community through effective volunteerism and fundraising. JSL promotes education and contributes to the betterment of the community by supporting and promoting health care issues, human services development, women and children’s issues, and arts and recreation. The lives touched by Junior Service League of Grand Junction are many, and they go fast past the ski slopes. Over the years, JSL has awarded more than $1,100,000 in grants and provided more than 750,000 hours of community service to help nonprofit organizations in the Grand Valley. In December 2023 alone, the service organization awarded a total of $30,000 in grants to 11 Mesa County nonprofits. Among those 2023 grant recipients, was Riverside Education Centers (REC), which provides Mesa County students with high-quality academic and extracurricular experiences during out-of-school time to foster individual growth and to create community within a safe, diverse, equitable, inclusive environment.
According to Kayla Pool of REC, one story about a 4th-grade student who hated reading at the start of the year reflects the transformation that can happen because of REC's after-school programming. “She’d shut down on reading days because it was such a struggle for her,” said the program manager at REC. The program manager and tutors worked closely with her to find books that she’d enjoy at her reading level, they shared tricks to make reading easier, and helped her slow down and sound out her words. Now, the same girl wants to spend all her time reading and asks every day for extra time with her book. “It's been amazing to see how different she is from August to now!” While the JSL has evolved over the years, the group has stayed steadfast in its efforts to help the CONTINUED >

Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.
Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!
Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. leadership skills that prepare them for a lifetime of leadership. The GSLE focuses on three key processes: girlled, learning by doing, and cooperative learning, creating an environment that empowers girls to take the lead in their own development.
BUILD COURAGE, CONFIDENCE, AND CHARACTER skills, community engagement, and personal growth. The key principle of Girl Scouts is to build courage, confidence, and character in its members. Through a variety of activities, girls learn to navigate challenges, make decisions, and develop resilience. The iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program, for example, is more than just a fundraiser; it teaches essential entrepreneurial skills like goal setting, money management, and teamwork. GIRL SCOUTS LEARN THE VALUE OF GIVING BACK says, “ I love being a Girl Scout because we learn to work hard and never give up. Selling cookies so we can do activities is really fun.” Other comments from the troop were, “Crafts are really fun”, and “We get to do activities and spend time with our friends”. It is obvious that the sweet girls in Troop 15029 are honored to be in this sisterhood together. They all spoke with pride and excitement. In conclusion, the Girl Scouts organization has played a vital role in empowering young girls and women for over a century. Through a combination of leadership development, diverse activities, community service, and inclusivity, Girl Scouts are equipped with the skills and confidence to navigate the challenges of life and become leaders in their communities and beyond.
