Exploring the Outdoors COLORADO DISCOVER ABILITY

Exploring the outdoors in the Grand Valley is an activity that most residents do daily. In fact, the outdoor recreation here is a large attraction for visitors as well.

It is easy to take for granted the beauty of hiking the many trails at the Colorado National Monument, mountain biking at the Lunch Loops trails, walking on the Riverfront Trail, rafting the Colorado River and skiing at Powderhorn Resort.

However, the reality is that 10% of Mesa County residents aren’t able to easily explore the outdoors due to different disabilities.

Fortunately, the need to have an organization to provide proper training and guidance in adaptive outdoor recreation was realized. In 1980, Powderhorn

Handicapped Ski Program, Ltd. was established to provide educational and therapeutic outdoor experiences to the disabled population in Western Colorado. In 1987, their name changed to Colorado Discover Ability to reflect their vision to provide recreational opportunities in other sports as well. During the summer CDA’s focus shifts to providing water-based recreation, such as river rafting and related camping activities. CDA also offers a summer camp for teens and children, and various clinics like adaptive cycling. In 2022, CDA served 140 participants.

They hope to increase that number in 2023.

Thanks to Colorado Discover Ability, their participants are having engaging experiences and important life skills are being developed. Positive changes are being realized in the areas of independence, self-esteem and physical health; concurrently,

participants are experiencing reduced feelings of isolation, depression and symptoms of mental and/or physical challenges.

“Aubrey” illustrates CDA’s impact. At 16 years old, Aubrey first participated in a CDA Women’s Rafting Trip. Having Autism Spectrum Disorder and not knowing any other participants, the social aspects of this overnight trip were difficult. When the wind and rain suddenly came up, Aubrey panicked and insisted, “Call 911! Call 911!” Her anxiety led to fear and anger but as the weather improved and a CDA volunteer taught her chords on a guitar, Aubrey began to relax. The next year, Aubrey simply took a walk, remaining calm when threatening weather arrived.

This past summer, she checked her tent, made adjustments and waited out the storm playing cards with the other girls. The trip was highlighted by Aubrey’s paddling a single inflatable CONTINUED >

kayak through rapids, helping unload rafts at takeout, even singing while playing her ukelele. When asked about navigating rapids, Aubrey reported, “my intuition took over and I knew what to do.” Through involvement with CDA, Aubrey is learning to self-manage, enjoy the outdoors, make new friends and be part of a team. What tremendous growth and accomplishment!

One of the hikes at the Bangs Canyon Trailhead is Mica Mines. This hike travels up Ladder Canyon and ends at the mouth of an old mica mine. This is a fun and family friendly hike. Near the beginning there is a stone outcropping, like a large staircase, to go down (and then back up on the return). This means some high steps, so hikers need to be able to rock scramble a bit. After this, the trail is fairly mellow, with no large drop offs. The total length of this out-and-back hike is 2.6 miles. It is a rocky trail and during wet parts of the year there are small streams to cross, so make sure you wear appropriate shoes. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on leash. There are cliffs rising above the hike, and plentiful cottonwood trees, so often the trail has

shaded areas along the way. All along the trail you can find bits of mica, especially as you get closer to the mine.

Mica is a translucent mineral that forms in thin sheets that are easy to flake off. It is thought that this vein of mica was discovered around 1895 by Benton Cannon, a mining speculator. The mine was operated

by Samuel Grady. In 1911, Douglass Sterrett visited the mine for the U.S. Geological Survey. He wrote that the mica at this site was inconsistent in sizes. At the time large sheets of mica were used to insulate appliances, however he thought that these smaller inconsistent sheets would be used to make abrasives.

Sterrett described the mine in his report, “The mica streak ranges from 1

to 3 feet in thickness and is composed of nearly solid masses of mica crystals.

These range from less than 1 inch to over 1 foot in length and are more commonly arranged in tufts and radiating groups.

In places, quartz, feldspar, and black tourmaline are associated with the mica.

Rosettes of radiated mica crystals cover the south wall of the open cut for a space 12 feet long by 8 feet high. The exposure here gives an impression of a very thick mica streak, but an examination shows that the cut has opened the ‘vein’ along its wall. The full thickness of the streak is probably 3 feet or more.”

MINING RUINS AND R A I LROA DS You might just catch the adventure bug

At the foot of the Bookcliffs, just a few miles north of Grand Junction, lie the ruins of the coal mining town Carpenter, Colorado. This town was established by Thomas Carpenter in the Late 1800s and was served by the Little Bookcliff Railway until the 1920s. Originally built to house miners operating the Little Bookcliff Mine and the now lost, Mesa Mine, Carpenter was also a town with some ambitions for fun. Thomas Carpenter considered himself a bit of an entertainment entrepreneur and devised a rail spur that went up the mountain side a little way beyond the mine.

Thrill seekers could pay to pump a hand cart up the rail grade and then ride the cart "free-wheeling" all the way into town about 5 miles away. It wasn't an attraction that caught on for enough paying customers though.

What kept the town of Carpenter alive and many other small Colorado towns along with it, was the demand for coal throughout the country to power locomotives as railroads became the best method of transportation for large amounts of high demand goods like food, building materials, fuel such as kerosene and then gasoline. While these advancements brought prosperity to the railroads and to the coal mining towns for a time, they were also the ultimate demise of

many small family operation coal mines as diesel engines came on the scene and ended railroad dependence on coal.

Mesa County has had many of these smaller mines come and go and still has an abundance of this resource which may one day return to widespread use. For now, remembering this piece of the local heritage makes exploration adventurous and finding out about places to explore near the old mines can be very interesting. A word of caution: old coal mines, abandoned mines of any type, are not only dangerous and often deadly when not well ventilated, but many are still on private land and carry serious trespassing consequences if you enter without permission as well as potentially lethal outcomes from toxic gasses and unstable structures.

Other mine names familiar to the area include the Mount Garfield mine, the ruins of which can be seen on the intense four mile out-and-back hike to the rim of Mount Garfield overlooking the Grand Valley from the north, and the Cameo mine just a few miles east of Palisade right next to I - 70 which was the most recent to close down.

adjacent to these mines, much has been done in recent decades to restore, reclaim and repair damages caused by these early energy development practices. Today many more regulations and a greater public awareness demand more responsible development in mining operations and energy development of all kinds. Responsible stewardship of our resources means a secure future for wildlife, ecosystems and even for sustainable future use of these resources when they may be needed again. Historic images of places like Carpenter can be seen at the Mesa County Museum and library branches. For your own enjoyment, seek them out or take an outing to some of these great places. You won't be disappointed in the views!

For those seeking a bit of adventure not as close to home, may we suggest the narrow gauge railroads sprinkled throughout the West. While these smaller trains were much more common near the turn of the 20th century, they are nearly extinct today. Among those that can be found nestled in the Rockies, a few stand out as note worthy. In the northern Idaho town of Council, there is a train called the Gallopin' Goose that makes “her” way through the valley twice each day with its shrill whistle announcing its arrival and departure. The "old timers" there call that whistle the dinner bell because of its consistency for a century and more. Another of note is the Heber Creeper, that runs between Heber City and Park City, UT. It was a real hit with world travelers during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Colorado's own Leadville Railroad was also developed to support high mountain mining operations and aided in the building, deconstruction and transport of millions of tons of supplies and equipment during the operating and eventual dismantling of Camp Hale which housed and trained the 10th Mountain Division soldiers instrumental in turning the tide to the favor of The Allies in Europe during WWII. Also in Colorado, The Silverton train running from Durango to the tiny historic mining town of Silverton. Mostly abandoned in the winter, Silverton still depends on the train in the winter as the most viable means of transport and supply in non-emergency situations when roads are closed due to heavy snow and/or avalanches. Many adventurers return to the train or get off at the Needleton tank about 1/2 way between Durango and Silverton as a place to go off grid or return to civilization to start or end a back country retreat.

Whether you go exploring ghost towns or railroads, there's a lot to see in our corner of the West.
