MARCH 2023
A Happy, Healthy Home!

The Annual Home Issue

We call returning, going "back to the ranch". We sometimes call home our nest.

In 1604 Sir. Edward Coke said, “A man's home is his castle". "Home is where the heart is", might even seem over used sometimes.

For me home is anywhere I find great people with whom I have something in common.

Mesa County is the place I find that more than anywhere. My four children grew up here. I've been here for going on 30 years and this place and the people here really do have my heart.

Within the houses we call home we can find solitude from the cares of the world and the daily demands that can be tiring. Home can be a great place to recharge, a great place to savor favorites from the enriching menus of life and relationships.

Whatever HOME means to you, wherever you find the most beneficial meaning in the things that surround you at home, my team and I hope you take a bit of time to reflect on the things that reinforce your personal recharge in your own nest; be it cottage or castle.

Audrey's Decorating Tips

CREATING A HAPPY HEALTHY HOME

When someone says, “home,” what is the first thought that comes to mind? Comfort? Love? Security? Our homes are our environments. They either help or hinder our moods, the way we feel, how much energy we have, and can even influence the way we live our lives. We are all humans with an innate desire to feel loved, secure, and comfortable. If the spaces within our homes are organized, well-planned, and beautiful, they will initiate a positive impact, not only on our physiological needs, but also on our psychological needs as well. Creating an uplifting atmosphere in our homes is essential to our well-being.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M PICKING THE RIGHT COLOR PALETTE FOR MY HOME?

Color can have a powerful effect on our emotions. Soft warm hues such as corals, oranges, and yellows will boost our mood, while cool muted hues like violets and blues offer relaxation and calming. There are so many colors out there to choose from, it can sometimes be overwhelming. However, you can never go wrong with choosing a favorite color. If your favorite color is vibrant, but you prefer neutral colors on your walls, use your favorite color as an accent color such as a small piece of furniture, throw pillows, or in some artwork.  If you want to go bold, add more vivid colors to your walls and let them set the mood for your space. Using your favorite colors in your home is sure to increase your happiness.

ARE THERE POPULAR COLORS OR STYLES TRENDING THAT I SHOULD BE AWARE OF?

One current trend is bringing nature indoors. Many people spent more time outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the colors and textures experienced in outdoor spaces are coming inside with them. Last year, Better Homes and Gardens introduced “Laurel Leaf” as their color of the year. It resembles the dusty green of eucalyptus leaves and invites soothing and healing emotions. This year, they revealed “Canyon Ridge” as their 2023 color of the year. It takes a new spin on terra cotta meant to capture pink desert sunsets and red rock cliffs. It evokes feelings of warmth, happiness, and cheer.

Adding some nature such as a living plant to your space can increase air quality and reduce stress levels. Plants that are easy to care for, such as succulents, orchids, or lucky bamboo, add life to any space and won’t suffer if you forget to water them every once in a while.

HOW CAN I INCREASE THE NATURAL LIGHT ALREADY IN MY HOME?

Natural light plays a significant role in our mood and energy. Maximize the natural light in your home by keeping the windows free from obstructions such as heavy drapes or furniture. Install drapery rods that extend past the width of the windows so that when the drapes are open, they don’t cover any part of the window. This will allow as much light in as possible.

You can also place reflective surfaces such as mirrors or high gloss finishes near windows and the light will increase in the room as it reflects off these polished surfaces.

WHAT ARE SOME QUICK AND EASY THINGS I CAN DO TO UPDATE MY SPACE WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK?

A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and most cost-efficient ways to change the look of a room. Whether it’s adding an accent wall with a bright color, modifying your trim

to a contrasting color, or simply painting everything the same color for a clean slate, changing the paint color will do wonders for reinvigorating your space.

Light fixtures can also have an impact on what your space looks like and most styles can be found at all different price points including budget-friendly options. Swapping out an outdated light fixture for something you like or that is more modern, will help revamp the room without a lot of cost or time.

IF THERE IS ONE THING TO SPLURGE ON, WHAT SHOULD IT BE?

Splurge on quality. Anything that is a high-touch or high-use item can be a candidate for a splurge item. For instance, dining room or kitchen chairs, sofas or sectionals, desk chairs, or appliances. Dining room or kitchen chairs need to be well built and sturdy to handle all the movement and stress they are put under each day. Seating areas where the family gathers regularly need to give support and have durable fabrics that wear well. Desk chairs should be comfortable and ergonomically correct to help with posture, especially if you are working at home and sitting for long periods of time. Dependable appliances such as dishwashers, washers, and dryers are critical to the smooth functioning of daily routines.

Putting more money towards these items will save you in the long run as they won’t need to be replaced as often and quality brands have proven to stand the test of time.

HVAC MaintenanceLocal Experts

What do I need to do?

MUST SEE | HOME SERVICES
20

It's that time of year when the seasons change. That also means that our home's HVAC systems need attention. So we asked our friends at Haining Home Services about what needs attention to keep our homes comfortable.

Do you have a forced air heater or central AC? These HVAC systems require a labyrinth of ductwork that snakes through the walls and ceilings of your home. Even though you can't always see the ducts, they still need your attention. Whether this is your first home or you just want to learn more about your HVAC system, take a look at everything you need to know about air ducts.

WHAT ARE HVAC AIR DUCTS?

Before you learn more about ducts, understand how forced air heat and central air conditioning work. These HVAC systems have a central unit (an air conditioner also has an exterior condenser that is outside of your home), ducts, and vents.

Think of air ducts as tubes that carry heat and cold around your home and into the interior spaces. Without air ducts, your central HVAC system couldn't keep your home warm or cool. Ducts are either flexible or rigid. Flexible ducts are tubes that can bend easily. These ducts are ideal for homes that have small wall spaces or setups that require the ducts to bend and curve.

As the name implies, rigid ducts are made from a rigid or hard material. The rectangle or circle-shaped ducts are commonly sheet metal.

DO ALL HVAC SYSTEMS REQUIRE AIR DUCTS?

No. Again, if your home has forced air heating or a central air conditioning system, you will need ducts to carry the warm or cool air around your

home. But if you have a mini-split heat pump or air conditioner, you won't. This type of system uses indoor air handlers and an outdoor condenser. These systems are also known as ductless heaters and air conditioners.

WHO CAN REPAIR, REPLACE, OR CARE FOR AIR DUCTS?

Duct repairs and maintenance aren't do-it-yourself jobs. Failure to correctly install, fix, or clean ducts can result in air leaks, damage to the system, or other issues that impact the interior comfort level and energy efficiency.

A licensed HVAC contractor can inspect, service, repair, or replace air ducts. Before you select a company to work on your home's air ducts, ask for references or find referrals from friends and family members who you trust. The contractor should have extensive knowledge and experience working on duct systems. If the technicians primarily service mini-split systems, continue your search until you find a professional who understands air ducts.

WHAT TYPE OF MAINTENANCE DO AIR DUCTS NEED?

Your home has forced air and central heating and cooling. Can you leave your ducts as is or do you need to care for this HVAC component?

Air ducts don't require a high degree of maintenance. But you do need to periodically make sure they're clean and damage-free. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air ducts that don't have visible mold growth or large dust deposits won't require special cleaning or care. If the ducts are noticeably clogged with debris, are moldy, aggravate your

allergies, or cause respiratory issues, you need to contact an HVAC professional.

Along with cleaning, you also need to make sure that your ducts don't leak. Damage or wear and tear can cause breaks, holes, or gaps in the ductwork. This allows heated or cooled air to slowly leak out of the ducts. This can cause heating and cooling losses that reduce your system's energy efficiency. The more air that doesn't get from the central unit to the interior spaces of your home,

the greater the force the system needs to maintain a consistent temperature.

If your ducts are old or damaged or have loose joints, call an HVAC contractor to inspect the system. They may need to replace sections of the air ducts, seal leaks, or insulate the ductwork.

Floral Arranging

There is something so lovely about a fresh flower arrangement in your home. Big or small, aromatic or simply bursting with color, an arrangement can brighten your home and your mood.

Although it seems like an easy task to put flowers in a vase, it can be quite intimidating. What if it looks like a child plopped them in? How do you make it pop? What is the difference between a grocery store bouquet, and a piece of art? Not to worry, with these easy tips, you will feel confident and ready to make your own creations.

CONSIDER WHERE IT WILL BE DISPLAYED

A huge bounty table may dwarf a small arrangement, while a large arrangement may look precarious in a small space. Consider where the arrangement will be displayed and plan the size accordingly. Short arrangements are good for a dinner table, so people won’t be blocked from seeing each other across the table. Tall arrangements can be great for entryways, while wide arrangements can be good for mantles or dressers. Some arrangements will be viewed from all

sides, while for other arrangements there will be a front, or face of the arrangement.

MAKE SURE YOU PREPARE THE FLOWERS

To help your flower arrangement last, stems should be trimmed at least 1 inch, and should be trimmed at an angle.  Any leaves that will fall below the water level should be trimmed off. Use a clean vase and fill it with water. If you are able, you should replace the water daily. Add flower food packets. These packets have a sugary formula that is great for flowers (not for humans or pets), and can prolong the vibrancy of your fresh-cut flowers.

CHOOSE A VASE

You certainly can’t go wrong with a crystal or glass vase, but there are so many options out there. You can use almost anything. A sturdy pottery jar can be just the thing to hold bigger, heavier plants. A mason jar with a twine bow can add a rustic touch. A metal bucket can be a beautiful contrast to traditional flowers. You could even use a woven basket with a plastic container inside to create a warm whimsical look.

THINK ABOUT BALANCE

Balance is important in both the physical and visual aspects. Choosing a vase that is too small or too large can be a mistake. A general rule of thumb is to have

Balance is different than symmetry. Don’t feel the need to make it symmetrical or perfectly aligned.

HOW TO | HOME + DESIGN

24

the flowers coming out of the vase to be one-and-a-half times more than the vase. A narrow vase will only allow for a few stems, while a wider vase will allow for more stems and variety. A trick when filling a wider mouth vase is to use tape to create a grid across the top. This will help hold stems in place and keep them from falling to the sides.

Balance is different than symmetry. Don’t feel the need to make it symmetrical or perfectly aligned. If you have a long stem poking out at one angle, try using multiple shorter stems poking out at the opposite angle. Flowers naturally grow in different ways, and we want to mimic that natural trait in our arrangements. Heavier blooms look more balanced towards the bottom, while lighter, smaller blooms look more balanced near the top.

Just like a healthy diet includes a variety of foods, a beautiful arrangement includes a variety of flowers, colors, and textures. Being too focused on one look can prevent you from considering other options. Be open-minded when selecting flowers and plants. Don’t feel like you can only incorporate traditional elements. Nearly anything that grows can be included in an arrangement. Sometimes for a little holiday flair, it can be fun to add trinkets or baubles by using floral tape and wire. Create visual interest by using a mixture of focal flowers and filler flowers and greenery.

HOW TO | HOME + DESIGN
26

START AT THE BASE

While it can be tempting to start by placing the flower that will be the highlight of the arrangement, it is better to start at the base and build up. Your arrangement needs a sturdy base to hold up the whole arrangement. As you decide what you will put in, starting with the base and outermost layer, cut the stems to be the desired length. Using greenery, fill in the base with varying lengths and focal points, continuing to consider the height of the stems as you build outward and upward. Remember, variety in spacing and height is key to creating a visually appealing arrangement.

PLACE DELICATE BLOOMS LAST

The one exception to the previous rule is to add delicate flowers or fillers last. You don’t want delicate pieces to be squashed or buried by heavier blooms. Use these to add highlight points to your arrangement. You can even spritz your arrangement at the end with water to mimic dew drops and create a fresh-picked look.

Blueberry Lemon Rolls

Comfort food or bright spring snack?

The weather during March can be unpredictable. Some days are cold and wet. Some days are warm and sunny. If you need a recipe that can be both warm and comforting, and also bright and bursting with flavor, we have you covered.

As the weather warms up, our plans for getting together begin to look different. While the holidays offer cozy, warm get-togethers, spring offers the chance to be outside and enjoy our beautiful Grand Valley weather. We are so blessed to have

so many beautiful and accessible options for enjoying time outside.

When hosting a get-together you have to think about the time and date, the guests, the activities, and of course the food. If you have ever planned an event this time of year, you know how tricky it can be. The weather should be nice and you have booked the outdoor location, but you know you need to have an indoor location available, just in case. And the food can be tricky as well. You need something

portable and easy to serve. Do you serve a full-on meal, or maybe just something to sip and snack on? The options are endless. We all love to eat well, but the true pleasure is getting to spend time with family and friends.

If you are looking for a sure-fire crowd favorite that can be served with a meal or by itself, you cannot go wrong with cinnamon rolls. Try these Lemon Blueberry Rolls for a springtime spin on a classic favorite.

INGREDIENTS:

DOUGH:

• 2 cups warm water

• 1 packet yeast (2 ¼ tsp)

• 1 T sugar

• ½ cup (1 stick) butter

• ¾ cup sugar

• 1 egg

• 1 tsp vanilla

• 1 tsp salt

• 6 ½ cups flour

BLUEBERRY FILLING:

• 1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries

• ¼ cup sugar

• 1 tsp cornstarch

ICING:

• 1 can cream cheese frosting

• 1 lemon (juiced, and zested)

DIRECTIONS:

Measure the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.

Beat together butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, and salt for 5 minutes. Add in yeast mixture. Mix in flour until the dough pulls away from the side of the bowl. Let rise for 1 hour. Punch down. Half the dough. Mix together blueberries, sugar, and cornstarch in a bowl. Roll out the dough, and sprinkle with half of the blueberry mixture. Roll up cinnamon roll style. Cut into 1-inch slices. I like to use floss or string for this. Repeat for the 2nd half of the

dough and blueberry mixture. Let rise for 2 hours (it needs a longer than typical rise time due to the frozen blueberries. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes until the tops are lightly golden brown.

Mix the juice of one lemon into a can of cream cheese frosting. Sure, you can make your own icing with powdered sugar, but these icings are often too sweet for me. Drizzle icing across the top of the cooled rolls. Sprinkle on some lemon zest. Enjoy these with a warm drink cuddled up with a good book, or with an iced drink out back on the patio!

5 Hot Trends in Kitchen Design

A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh.

We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH

Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip:

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WARMING UP THE WHITE

We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD HARDWARE

Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST!

From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
