You might be on a porch swing while soaring past stars at light speed or soaking in a bubble bath as your inner adventurer is bouncing along a back country trail on horseback during the days of the "Wild West".

Our area has countless rivers to raft, kayak or paddle board and hundreds of bodies of still water too. The back country holds endless possibilities and this month we're delighted to share one such local adventure that took us back to 1913.

A Legacy of Service

Adventures Had, Adventures to Come After a career of over 30 years in the healthcare industry, Christy Whitney, CEO of Hope West, passes the torch. Christy’s impact on the community is one to be admired and the Grand Valley will benefit from her influence for many years to come due to her work with hospice and local healthcare organizations.

Christy carries an impressive resume beginning with her first CEO job in Washington D.C. at Capital Caring.

Throughout the development of hospice care in the Grand Valley, she continued to create works of art as well, including the current Hope West logo. Her art also received the Community Vision Award in 2015.

The relationships she has built within the community hospitals and healthcare organizations have truly impacted the level of care provided, and the number

of people receiving such care has blossomed. Before Christy arrived in the valley, only around 25 people had ever received hospice care in Grand Junction. With her journey to create what is now Hope West, that number has been exponentially multiplied.

Before her arrival, Hilltop had hospice service from roughly 1978 – 1992 and Saint Mary’s Hospital offered hospice from the 1980’s – 1992. Both had decided they wanted to divest from that program due to cost and thought a community organization would be better. Once all parties were contacted, a board was formed of two people from each organization and a collaborative effort was underway to improve availability and service quality. Her goal was to not be in competition with any hospitals or healthcare

organizations but rather to work with them and create a much-needed service. Through her established contacts with members of the healthcare community such as Karen Hildebrandt of Hilltop, she was able to bring together four organizations already present in the valley and develop a clear mission statement to align their goals and make sure every voice was heard. Each was then asked to donate money toward a hospice center. Even with donations from each, there still was not enough money for an office space. Christy then went to the VA where they were able to work out an agreement for an office space in exchange for Christy and her employees becoming VA volunteers. Thus the first office was established, then called Grand Valley Hospice. The name changed to Hope West in 2013 after

a handful of name changes and the inclusion of palliative care. Over the years they eventually expanded to their current location which now includes The Artful Cup coffee shop in the historic Miller Homestead house. Christy described the process of getting that space from Gene Taylor and the re-zoning of acreage to be commercial in order to have the space as it stands today. Though it was not a simple process, it was worth it to see the final result come together.

When asked why Christy got into hospice care initially, she explained that watching her mother-in-law go through pancreatic cancer was the experience that steered her in that direction. She realized that there had to be a better way, knowing how bad it can be for people at the end. The personal investment and compassion

is what made Christy so driven and successful over the years to ensure that she was providing the highest quality care possible. When asked, she laughed as she explained (a bit humorously) that the people are what she will miss most, because she works so much, if she didn’t work with her friends she wouldn’t have any!

And while she will miss them, she did say she is equally looking forward to slowing down a bit and not having life be such a continual rush. Christy’s next chapter will include more of her other favorite things besides work such as gardening, art and reading.

However, as the go-getter she is and her involvement with public policy committees, she likely will still have a strong presence in the valley for as long as she resides here. When asked her favorite thing about Mesa County,

Christy again refers to the people: a big enough town that there is always something going on and someone new to meet but small enough that you always run into people you know. Regarding knowing your neighbor, Christy’s replacement Cassie grew up just 20 minutes from Christy’s parents in Kentucky. She joked that people won’t even realize she is gone because they seem to have so much in common. Christy feels very confident in leaving Hope West in Cassie’s hands because of her years of experience and her fresh, positive attitude.

We wish Christy the best of luck with her next chapter. We thank her for all her years of incredible, altruistic service, and hope she enjoys many of the simpler pleasures life has to offer here in the valley and where ever her future adventures take her.

A NEW GENERATION OF COOL CAR CRAFTSMEN

Many of you know of ACME Chop Shop here in Grand Junction. They restore and rebuild classic cars and trucks. But, did you know that they also help build young adults from all over the country and help them start their automotive careers? Jack Weaver, the owner and founder of ACME Chop Shop, needed help with his restoration projects, but finding people who could do the tasks required for classic restoration was very difficult, so three years ago he was able to solve this problem by starting a nonprofit, Kustom Built Cars.

Kustom Built Cars is an educational workshop that totally immerses students in the many tasks, skills, and logistics of finding and restoring an old classic car. The first day of class starts with picking up the project vehicle from wherever it is. The current project, a 1951 Chevrolet pickup, was in a field in Rifle, Colorado. Jack and the five enrolled students loaded the truck onto Jack's trailer and brought it back to the shop to get started.

Right now, they are on the teardown stage.

The students have taken the truck completely apart and are now removing the paint, and rust, to get down to the bare metal. After they complete the stripping stage, they will install a new chassis. "Our first year we didn't use a new chassis and it was a lot of work. Getting these cars

ready for SEMA is a tight schedule and buying a new chassis makes a lot of sense from a time and safety perspective" Jack said.

SEMA, for those of you that don't know, is the biggest automotive trade show in the United States. Jack's curriculum revolves around getting these cars ready for this show so the students can experience the public reactions to their work. The vehicle needs to be 100% ready for this show because shortly after the show, the car is off to the Barrett Jackson auto auction. Jack auctions off the previous project to pay for the next year's project. The sale also helps provide scholarship funds to make the program more accessible.

The Kustom Built Kars program has really taken off and Jack hopes to grow the program to accommodate 10 or more students. He frequently gets requests for his graduates from shops all across the country looking to hire people that have the foundations and skills that his program teaches. “Students get a job pretty quickly,” Jack said with a smile. Calamit y Camp and the Uncompaghre Plateau AN “OVERLAND ADVENTURE” OUTING

Going to Calamity Camp, Historic Site Sixty seven miles Southwest from Grand Junction lies a hidden gem.

Many of the stories this place has to tell have already been lost to the passing of time and the passing of those who lived the rugged existence of being a Calamity Mesa miner.

From 1913-1971 mining on the Calamity Mesa claim experienced three phases. Carnotite ore was first mined for Radium which was first used in medicine and for self luminescing instruments like watch dials and aircraft gauges. Vanadium was next in the series of mining booms and was used to strengthen steel including the chassis of the Ford model T. The final boom for Calamity Camp was Uranium which was originally used for glass and ceramic tinting and coloring.

According to Western Colorado Historian Kathy Jordan, Calamity Mesa got its name when a prospector’s burrow ate all his food, leaving him without provisions for four days, until he made it to Gateway.

To get to Calamity Camp, part of the GJ Lifestyle team was hosted by Travis Lindley who owns Element Outdoors and supplies Overland Adventure Vehicles to vacationers who want to rent a 4x4 that has all the gear to hit the road for a few days or a few weeks.

Our outfit for the trip was a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and a ¾ ton Ram Power Wagon. Both are equipped with truck mounted tents and with a tire pressure adjustment shortly after leaving the pavement, the ride was remarkably soft on rugged, rocky, washboard roads.

Our route followed Divide Rd. from Hwy 141 and our first stop was atop the plateau at Big Creek.

After a few hours attempting to fish in high wind and talking with some paddle boarders from Montrose, we moved on toward our destination.

Our guide, Travis had mapped out a few other points of interest for us to explore so we took a couple of side tracks. The “top of the world” view from one potential campsite was inspiring and seemed to be the kind of experience that could inspire songs and stories. Songs like John Denver's Rocky Mountain High, which shares the official state song spot with the original Where the Columbines Grow.

The terrain was just what should be expected in the back-country. We even lost a hubcap on one hairpin turn and found it on the way back.

Our next leg of the trip would take us to Calamity Camp. Due to free range grazing, we encountered a herd of cattle that stayed right in the road ahead, slowing our progress for a while but thankfully that was it for our own “calamities”. In fact our wilderness dining was great. More about that in a bit.

Arrival at Calamity Camp More than a decade ago Zeb Miracle was the Director of Mesa County Museums and his team worked closely with BLM officials to establish and improve preservation efforts for the Calamity Mesa area. Today the original housing area and the old mine workings are included in the Calamity Camp Historic Site. The tunnels that go underneath Calamity mesa from both sides of the Calamity Creek gorge can be seen from the Camp on one side and from the roadway to the winch-works on the other side.

Our exploration of the “Camp” happened in three stages. First we spent a couple of hours looking through the “footprints” of a few dozen cabins, dugouts and lean-tos concentrated in the main camp area. We found old cook stoves, broken glass and electric insulators, a core sample dump and an old outhouse that lacked the proper “quarter moon” window. We also found the can dump - a spot over the cliff edge where thousands of metal cans that mostly held food for the workers, were simply dropped off the cliff to their final resting place. Stage two was after dark when we had our

own waning quarter moon to accompany the symphony of brilliant stars out among the cedars, coyotes, lizards, snakes, rabbits and rocks where “light pollution” is not to be found. Things really take on a different view in a ghost town at night. We even wondered if there are a few lingering souls who were so committed to this place that a piece of their energy still roams the place from time to time. Stage three was the next morning where the light of daybreak gave an additional perspective and revealed nearly a hundred dwelling “footprints” within the fenced historic “camp”.

Dining in the field that night couldn’t have been better. Our host broke out the camp stove and

served up bacon cheddar burgers, followed by italian sausage brats and believe it or not, Ben and Jerry’s for dessert. That’s right, the rig has a fridge/ freezer for your favorites, far off the beaten path.

There’s so much more to say about what we saw but maybe the best way to share it is to encourage you to go see this amazing place for yourself.

Even though this was just an overnighter, it could just as easily have been a week or three weeks. “Self-contained” sums up the outfit nicely and it’s an experience we highly recommend. It’s also one we’ll be planning again for a different destination. Who knows, maybe even another ghost town.

EVER HEARD OF BIKE-PACKING?

GOING LONG As the days lengthen and the snowline recedes, many mountain bikers embark on all-day or even multi-day adventures. Not only are these types of rides a great excuse to be on your bike for a long time, but they will also build character and confidence. Planning for a long ride can be intimidating, but being prepared will ensure you are ready for almost any situation. Below are some important things to consider: • Are you fit enough to enjoy the ride? If you want to have a good time it may be wise to build your fitness before you head out.

• Is your bike ready to get you there and back? Visit your local bike shop, and have them inspect and tune your bike.

• Most adventure rides will involve some hike-a-bike. Make sure the shoes you are wearing are up to the task.

• What’s the forecast? Thunderstorms are common during the summer months in the high country. Few things can turn an adventure into a survival situation faster than being caught out in a dangerous storm with nothing to protect you from the elements.

• What are you wearing? Try out all your cycling clothing on shorter rides beforehand. You need to be comfortable and to stay comfortable for hours or days.

Quality cycling shorts with a padded liner are invaluable. Most of us who wear

these shorts use some sort of anti-chafing product. A lightweight, packable, hooded jacket that is wind and water-resistant is something I carry no matter the forecast. These jackets are very light and pack down to the size of a PB&J sandwich.

Speaking of PB&J’s, what are you eating?

Fueling for longer rides requires trial and error to know what your body best tolerates. Calorie-dense food and drink mixes with carbohydrates and electrolytes are a good place to start. Gels and energy bars have their place, but few things are more delicious than a PB&J sandwich on a long ride. I also carry a Katadyn BeFree 1.0l water filter. If water is available to filter along your route a filtration system will reduce the amount of water you have to carry.

Is the route open? Some trails have seasonal wildlife closures and can only be ridden during certain parts of the year, other routes are inaccessible until the snow melts, mud dries, and someone clears the deadfall. Connecting with a local trail conditions group is a great idea.

Can you read a map? Basic map reading skills are a huge help in the backcountry. Study your route, know it well and plan for extra time for stops and possible repairs.

Does someone know where you are? It is vital you share your plan with others.

I always bring the following items for any dawn to dusk type adventure rides: water/filtration system/drink mix, plenty of calories, lighter in a Ziploc baggie, small folding knife, tubeless tire plug kit with large and small plugs, small flashlight, small tire pump, spare chain-link, zip ties, tire levers, small multitool, packable wind/water resistant jacket with hood, cash, small bar-mounted light, cell phone, spare tube, and a positive attitude.

Being prepared will ensure a great ride! Ride safe out there.
