Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. Reflecting on the many women in our lives, there is so much to be thankful for. So many leave others better by the positive impact they have on the world around them. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is confidence within herself. The ability to see beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them too, is always inspiring. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own lives can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement with and consideration for those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left us truly inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. Especially around Mothers Day, it's great to make time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their personal influence upon you.

Committed to Community KAREN TROESTER AND LEADERSHIP BY DOING
Karen Troester came to Grand Junction in 1992 from Alaska. Her good friend who still lives there, has Huskies that have competed as top performers in the Iditarod. Karen now has two of those huskies which often join her hiking in Rabbit Valley and on The Grand Mesa where she's always in search of new and interesting places to explore. Recently honored as Citizen of the Year at the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, Karen has been deeply involved in serving within the community here since she made this place her home. Her three daughters joined in often, helping with things like the Riverside kids camp and countless other service programs as they

grew up. They now serve regularly in their own communities as adults. After 22 years with US Bank she began looking for a change of pace from the tempo of the corporate world, where she managed the local commercial banking team. Following some consulting conversations with board members from Grand Junction Federal Credit Union, and some long consideration she was offered and ultimately accepted the role as CEO with the credit union. She has found a great fit with her own commitment to community and the community focused culture there. When talking about her favorite things to do for recreation she often returns to the programs she is part of such as the Young Entrepreneurs Academy held each year by the GJ Chamber which helps middle school age students develop a business idea from concept to legal entity and sometimes well beyond. She also loves to explore new places and has sought out many adventures within Colorado and throughout the United States. She also shared the idea that since there are so many great things to discover right here at home,
maybe seeing more of our own surroundings should be as high a priority for education and adventure as foreign travel. Her legacy of service extends from work with start-up businesses through the Business Incubator to numerous SD-51 initiatives, JUCO, advisory boards with CMU and the Grand Junction Economic Development Partnership (GJEP). In fact, she's the 2022 Chair on GJEP’s Board of Directors. This year as JUCO approaches, her work coordinating security for the tournament for many years, stands out among her other achievements for our community. Even with numerous roles of far reaching influence, Western Iowa Community College players know that if they have a team competing in JUCO, she'll be making some of her home baked goodies to make them feel welcome while they're here. She’s done that for many years. Karen was also recognized in 2015 by Western Colorado Girl Scouts as a Woman of Distinction. This seems to be a most apt description, for someone who has given so much, so selflessly for so many community enriching causes.

Trailblazers in Our Community We sat down with Bonnie Davis and Kayla Brown, the Executive Directors for the Fruita and Palisade Chambers of Commerce. They are both Trailblazers in our community and are all about helping our businesses grow, and our towns thrive. We hope you enjoy the interview!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE VALLEY THE MOST? B) I love all the incredible natural beauty and diverse outdoor options we have here. K) I love being able to go to the grocery store or order a cup of coffee and run into at least one person I know.
HOW HAVE THE CHAMBERS BENEFITED THE COMMUNITY THE MOST? B) My belief is that the Chamber is an organization where businesses can support one another and in turn bolster the local economy. K) In the last year, we welcomed 123 new businesses and hosted a multitude of networking events. We are continuously looking for ways to help our community grow!
WHAT IS ONE CHALLENGE OF BEING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR? B) One of my biggest challenges of being the Executive Director for the Chamber is not having the time to connect with all our wonderful members in their business space.

“My favorite part of my job at the Chamber is the people who make up and are involved in the Palisade community.”
K) My biggest challenge as the Executive Director was navigating through COVID. I stepped into this role in March 2020, the same week that the State of Colorado shut down.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? B) My favorite part of my job at the Chamber is the people who make up and are involved in the Palisade community. There are so many wonderful humans who are working diligently every day to make this town a wanted destination. K) My favorite part of what I do is the connections I make. I have developed more than just business contacts. I am passionate about creating strong connections with my community.

IF GRAND JUNCTION HAD AN NFL TEAM, WOULD YOU ROOT FOR THAT TEAM, OR WOULD YOU ROOT FOR THE DENVER BRONCOS? B) If Grand Junction had a team I would definitely root for them, however, I am always and forever a Denver Broncos fan. K) I don't want to have tomatoes thrown at me, but I do not bleed blue and orange. If Grand Junction had an NFL team, I would probably still root for the 49ers.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF WORK? B) My favorite things to do outside of work are: spending quality time with my family, and I love to vacation at the beach or to stay-cation at a locally owned B&B and go on a wine tour with friends. K) I enjoy spending time at Powderhorn snowboarding with my family. We also enjoy camping, hiking, or soaking in hot springs.
THIS QUESTION IS FOR THOSE KIDS THAT ARE GRADUATING THIS YEAR. WHAT JOB ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? B) The job advice I would give myself if I was 18 in 2022 would be to find something you love to do and learn how to make money doing it. If you don't know what you love, explore what is out there. K) My job advice to my 18-year-old self and any of those who are graduating this year would be, NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK!
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF JOINING THE CHAMBER AND WHO CAN BE CONTACTED FOR MORE INFORMATION ON JOINING? B) The biggest benefit of joining the Chamber is community connection and local business support. K) When you join the FACC, you join a force. We are here to support one another, build a strong community and help businesses thrive. To find out more about joining (or a joint Fruita/Palisade membership) call (970) 858-3894 or 970-464-7458!

WITH NOTHING BUNDT CAKES
Back
When Erin Gordon was away at school she discovered a wonderful bakery called Nothing Bundt Cakes. She was excited to share this jewel of a bakery with her mother, Christie, when she came for a visit. A stop at the bakery and a movie quickly became the tradition of their visits. Later after graduating and moving back to the valley, Erin convinced her parents to look into opening a Nothing Bundt Cakes Franchise. As they began doing the initial research and planning they were thrilled to discover the company’s strong values matched their own. CONTINUED >

The franchise requirements are strict and the application process was rigorous, but that didn’t stop this dynamic mother and daughter duo from chasing their dream and bringing Nothing Bundt Cakes to our beautiful valley. At first, headquarters wasn’t interested in this location, but Erin and Chrisie were able to persuade them, in part because of their love for our community. They were able to overcome each hurdle and officially opened their doors last October. They are thrilled each and every day to be celebrating life with people from all over our community. Erin and Christie are hugely passionate about our community. As they were opening last fall, they enjoyed dropping off cakes to show their thanks to our first responders, our local hospitals, and our schools. Nothing Bundt Cakes hosts Give Back Days once a month where a portion of the proceeds go to various organizations. They are able to partner with schools and organizations for fundraisers, and they even have a Books & Bundts program to encourage elementary students to read more. (You can find more information on their website.) All of their cakes are made in-house, including the many decorations and embellishments that are painstakingly made to customize each cake. With nine standard flavors, a flavor of the month, and a gluten-free option, as well as a bounteous selection of decorations and embellishments you are sure to find the perfect cake for any occasion. So, whether you are celebrating a birthday, graduation, or just a lovely Thursday in our beautiful valley, stop into Nothing Bundt Cakes. They are ready and eager to celebrate with you.

I am so excited to introduce you to my dear friend, Valerie Holley. Valerie is a woman who knows how to dream big and make things happen. She is an intentional mother, a published author, an award-winning photographer, and the owner and master instructor of Grand Valley Taekwondo. Master Holley is a certified fifth-degree blackbelt. This is a rank that is rare in and of itself, but you should also know that only 10% of the people holding this rank are women.

Her taekwondo story started when she was a teenager. Taekwondo changed her life. It not only changed her physically, but also changed how she approached life. She gained confidence, and the 5 tenets of taekwondo became an integral part of her life. Later as a young adult, she became an instructor and found a love of teaching as she watched these same changes take place in her students. Through taekwondo, she also found the love of her life, her husband James, who is a fourth-degree blackbelt and also an instructor at Grand Valley Taekwondo. Early on in their relationship, they talked about one day starting their own dojang, and have worked together to make that dream come true.
24
I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + CULTURE
Grand Valley Taekwondo started as a small group of children’s classes held in their garage, but they opened the doors of their dojang last summer. Their schedule has grown and they now offer a variety of classes for children, youth, and adults, with plans to continue growing. The location of Grand Valley Taekwondo was important to Master Holley. She loves living on the eastern side of our valley and knew there weren’t any martial arts studios in the area. She felt guided to open a studio in her community to build her community. Master Holley’s classes are so much more than fighting and board breaking. As students build their physical skills, they also build confidence and learn how to overcome all kinds of challenges. Theirs is a community of respect that builds great people.

A Place To Turn To
KIMBERLY RAFF
ARTICLE BY C. W. MORGAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEE FICKLIN

M UST SE E | ED U CATION
We are extremely fortunate to have Kimberly Raff in our community. Kim grew up moving from city to city, from state to state. She lived in family members' homes then lived with friends, only to end up in the foster care system when she was 14. Despite this, Kim was able to complete high school 3 months before her 18th birthday. She had those 3 months to figure out what to do before she would need to leave her foster home in Minnesota. Kim's mother was living in Colorado at the time. She made the journey to pick Kim up and bring her to Colorado, and then promptly left after dropping her off. Kim was able to find employment and between three different jobs, she was able to support herself during that time. After a while, one of her employers asked if Kim was at all interested in going to college. She replied that she was and that short conversation was a complete life changer. After 12 years, Kim graduated with a bachelor's degree and then started her career in Child Welfare. Kim herself had experienced a lack of support for young adults who "aged out" of the system. A lot of these young adults end up homeless, unable to form a clear vision of their future. "They need
a community of peers, people they can rely on," Kim said, "Most of the foster care alumni we help are around 25 years old right now." Kim explained that when these teenagers turn 18 they become extremely excited to not live under a huge blanket of rules and they are excited to have some "freedom". Then, after a few years, they discover that their life situation isn't what they wanted. Kim's hope is to help these young adults; help them avoid bad situations, and give them encouragement along the way. In 2016, Kim started Foster Alumni Mentors (FAM) to fill this need and she has found several

innovative, unique solutions to help these foster alumni. Kim hopes to see FAM go national, and I think we all hope she is successful with that goal. She has already done so much for these young adults in our community. She began a partnership with FAM and CMU to create the Sylvia Aynn Richards Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of Sylvia, who is tragically not with us anymore. The scholarship has been created to help our foster care alumni obtain a college education. As I said in the beginning, we are fortunate to have such a caring person in our community. There are several ways we as a community can help and support our aging out population. If you are interested in helping you can call Kim at 970.234.3519 to learn more.

DEBBIE HARRISON
Our society needs strong, smart, caring business owners who take leadership and community service to heart. One such person is Debbie Harrison. Debbie grew up in Pico Rivera, California. After moving to Alaska, she met and married Tom Harrison. Debbie and Tom moved to Colorado and together started Visiting Angels. Visiting Angels is an amazing company that is dedicated to helping seniors and families in our community. It is a family of employees and an amazing place to work and be a part of.

Volunteering, Helping, Caring, and Service
Debbie Harrison
Visiting Angels has received “Best of Home Care Leader in Excellence” for seven years, through Debbie’s leadership. Caring for her clients and staff Debbie is intentional about providing excellent care. Debbie is able to recognize needs and work creatively to solve those needs. One example of this was when she wrote a book to help children and adults recognize the need to protect themselves and pets from prescription drugs. This book shares the message in a creative captivating way to teach the importance of prescription drug safety. Debbie has devoted much of her life to the senior population in the Grand Valley, spending many hours beside loved ones in the hospitals and finding care for them. Among many other volunteer projects, her service includes the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. You can go to act.alz.org if you would like to learn more and participate in that walk. The home healthcare community will miss Debbie, as she steps down. We know she will be an active retiree in the community. We're sure she will be enjoying her four grandchildren, and with her amazing spirit, will continue to serve others in our wonderful Western Slope.
