mertime seemed to always be the best time of year to be a kid. Those early memories include dogs and cats and all kinds of silliness that involved them in our summer fun. Where we lived, snakes, badgers and many other things could be dangerous to us in our outdoor adventures and the dogs were always on alert to warn us before we ever saw any danger. Our adventures took us into three foot high hay and grain fields and towering corn fields with grasshoppers as big as a double A battery on nearly every cornstalk.

These days, I see people every day whose pets are companions, security guards for their children, the comic relief at home (much like the dogs in my house) and others whose daily existence is enhanced greatly through services that a registered service dog provides. My wife trained seeing-eye-dogs through the 4-H program when she was in middle school and high school and still loves dogs as pets too. Kids add so much to our lives as well. The laughter and the innocent perspective they see with, enhances so much of the world around us when we listen to their way of experiencing things. Thinking back to being a seven-year-old who had the privilege of spending all day, more than once with my grandpa fishing the creeks and

I found out recently, that I'll be a grandpa for the first time, in January 2022 and I'm excited to see what adventures this new little one will bring to her parents and to the rest of us who will be in her "village" as she grows up. She will arrive with her own furry guardian and buddy, a wooly, rambunctious Airedale. 514 W 26TH ST., KANSAS CITY, MO

This month as we celebrate kids and pets, maybe you too will catch yourself thinking of fond memories, laughing again at the fun times that you've had as a kid, and taking in new memories with today's kids and pets as they provide comic relief, companionship and a step back from the daily pressures of "adulting", to the perspective of childhood wonder sometimes lost in the daily grind.

If this all sounds like way too much, how about just a walk through the downtown area of Fruita, Grand Junction or Palisade to give a child the chance to check out the Art on the Corner and other history on display. Giving children these experiences changes their outlook from being centered upon themselves to being aware of and engaged with the community around them. Children are not selfish beings by nature and early in life is the time to let them do their work and create a village where the soul and heartbeat matter. After all, at the end of the day there is nothing better than a sweet sticky hug from a contented child. When they could break away they would come back to Colorado. In 2018, Hank and Arielle could not resist the call of Colorado anymore. So they packed their bags and came to Grand Junction. They didn’t pack up their filmmaking career, however. “There is more opportunity than ever to make movies. It’s really the golden age for movie making. Gone are the days of shooting on film, which really brings costs down, the streaming services that are popping up are really making it so anyone can make a movie” Arielle said. She and Hank have made a few movies while working out of their home office here in Grand Junction. Their most recent is Dragon Soldiers which was shown at the Avalon Theater this last month. “From the beginning concepts, we really wanted to showcase the beauty of western Colorado. From the red rocks to the deserts, the lakes, forests, and canyons. We wanted it all while we were in the early planning stages”. During the screening of Dragon Soldiers, it was evident that Arielle wasn’t joking. Shots of Fruita were present from the beginning of the film. A local law firm served as the mayor’s office, and shots from on the Mesa and the Monument were all throughout the movie. Arielle recalled that the missing posters were done on a phone pole just outside The Hot Tomato in Fruita, and the night cave scenes were shot in the boulder fields on the Redlands Mesa Golf Course. “I really want to give a shout out to the Redlands Mesa Golf Course, Western Colorado Community College, Colorado Mesa University, the Avalon Theater, and the Veteran’s Community here in GJ. They were all extremely helpful in the production of this movie and we couldn’t have done it without them,” Arielle continued, “Local veterans gave our actors a mini boot camp and taught them how to hold weapons, how operators would act, and one even let us use his Jeep for the movie. It was really cool for them to offer their expertise”. We here at Grand Junction Lifestyle would like to thank Hank, Arielle, and all of the people and sponsors for bringing such a cool experience to our community. You can watch Dragon Soldiers on Amazon, iTunes, Walmart, and other streaming services. Also, look out for Hank and Arielle’s next movie “Jurassic Hunt”. It will be available on August 24th from those same distributors, and look out for familiar sights because that was shot at Glade Park!

how to do. He slept on neighborhood lawn chairs and still went to school daily because that was the one thing he knew in life. This story became reality for one of our very own District 51 Bus drivers. But, more importantly, it was the reality of one of our own Grand Junction teens.

26

Grand Junction Lifestyle | August 2021

There are literally hundreds of stories about Grand Valley teens who have nowhere to go. Teens who deserve a bright future, hope, and love. These are teenagers in our very own backyards who have been found living behind dumpsters, under bridges or have even been dropped off at shelters by their parents as if their child was just a bag of groceries. Ten years ago some residents opened their eyes and saw something that most of the Grand Valley residents had not even considered. They saw a need for homeless youth to have a place to go and that is where Karis Inc. was formed. Right now, as this article is being read, there are between 300 and 400 homeless teens in Mesa County. Over the years, Karis Inc. has become a place of hope and now offers a full continuum of services for these youth.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

From day to day Karis Inc. is coming across teenagers who have been trafficked, raped, abandoned, suffered from hunger or whose homes were so filthy they looked like the town dump. As you can imagine, these teens are dealing with many emotional and physical traumas. Some of them have been homeless for so long that they don’t even remember their parents. While in the safe haven of Karis Inc., these kids have a place to go at night as well as therapists, case workers, mentors, teachers and more who are there to support them so that they can learn the life skills they need to be out on their own. Thanks to Karis Inc. and the services they have given the youth for the past ten years there are now hundreds of once homeless young adults who have graduated out of the Karis Inc. programs and went off to become CMU graduates, Uber drivers, plumbers, business owners, landscapers and more.

28

Grand Junction Lifestyle | August 2021

How can you help? On any given day there is something you can do for these teens. If you are shopping for toilet paper, pick up an extra package. If you are baking cookies, bake an extra dozen. They always need even the tiniest thing, toilet paper, paper towels, or frozen burritos are a good start. On any given month, they go through 300400 frozen burritos. Donations can be dropped off at their business offices located at 7th and Grand at the 1st Baptist church. You can also volunteer in person or make monetary donations. The volunteer possibilities are endless. To learn more about Karis Inc. and their volunteer opportunities please visit https://thehousegj.org
