LIFESTYLE LETTER
December
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Gary Perrelli | gary.perrelli@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
The holidays are officially upon us and December is our Winter + Holidays issue. We’ve assembled a variety of stories that reflect the festive season! This is the time of year when we do so much gift-giving and shopping, we thought it made sense to focus on some interesting shopping options. If you’re looking for some good old-fashioned New England charm, check out our story about a boutique in the village of Essex. The RiverLane shop, at 7 Main St., opened a little over a year ago. With its emphasis on bringing a bit of New York fashion fun to the region, RiverLane has quickly become a popular shopping destination, drawing interest from across the state. And with numerous other retail venues along its Main Street, this quaint New England village, nestled along the lower Connecticut River, is also a lovely town to visit during the holiday season. RiverLane also has provided us with a Gift Guide with ideas for that fashionista on your shopping list! Speaking of New England villages, we spoke with the operators of the Shops at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor. Developed in 2005, this lively outdoor shopping center, with its festive lights and large outdoor fire pit, is designed to evoke village charm and boasts numerous restaurants and retailers, including J.Jill, Lenscrafters, Lovesac, Anthropology, Old Navy and Chicos. Attending some holiday festivities this month and want a new look? We spoke with Sundance Salon & Spa on New London Turnpike, about its long tenure here and the styling services they offer, both traditional and innovative. We also spoke with the owner of Maynestreet Weight Loss & Wellness about her company’s unique and lasting approach for losing weight and keeping it off. Finally, we have a recipe for roasted apple sauce you can serve at your holiday gatherings and from our partners at City Lifestyle we have an article about a special Gift Giving outreach campaign to brighten the lives of those in need this season. We hope you enjoy our Winter + Holidays issue of Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine and that you have a happy holiday season!

MAYNESTREET WEIGHT LOSS AND WELLNESS A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
ARTICLE BY LUCINDA JAMISON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN HELMKE
16
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
Maynestreet Weight Loss and Wellness is a beacon of hope for those seeking lasting results in a world where fad diets and quick fixes dominate the weight-loss industry. Co-founded by Debbie Harris, a seasoned Integrative Nutritional Health Coach and Certified Hypnotist, this program is not a diet— it’s a holistic approach to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight while addressing often overlooked factors, like hormone imbalances and emotional relationships with food. Harris knows the struggle firsthand. “I was the fattest kid in the class growing up,” she says. Over the years, she tried countless diet plans, from packaged meals to extreme diets like the Beverly Hills diet, with little success in maintaining a
healthy weight. Most failed to provide a lasting solution because they neglected the root causes of weight gain and loss. Maynestreet’s approach combines science and support to bring tangible results. The program recognizes that hormones, particularly insulin and cortisol, play a significant role in weight management. Their homeopathic methodology targets the hypothalamus, a critical hormone regulator. Clients learn how their bodies react by eliminating certain problematic foods and gradually reintroducing them, ultimately forging a personalized path to sustainable weight management. “Our approach is grounded in education, teaching clients to make healthier food choices and develop positive relationships with food. One size does not fit all when it comes to nutrition. We teach individuals what works for their unique bodies, empowering them to make informed choices that align with their lifestyles.” One of the program’s strengths is its adaptability. It caters to various dietary preferences, whether someone is vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or gluten-free. The program emphasizes the consumption of natural, unprocessed foods. As part of the program, clients also receive high-quality vitamins, homeopathic drops, and weekly snacks to support their journey. Maynestreet highlights the importance of non-scale victories. Improved health metrics, fitting into smaller clothes, or breaking free from food-related addictions are critical successes that help clients understand and respect their bodies’ needs. The program allows them to set boundaries with food, just as they would set with other aspects of their lives, CONTINUED >

creating a lasting foundation for a healthier, happier future. Its unwavering commitment to providing personal support is essential to the program. Members are assured access to continuous guidance through daily texts, weekly mentor calls, a WhatsApp group, and community check-ins on Zoom. This valuable support network addresses weight management’s emotional and psychological aspects and ensures that participants are never alone in their weight-loss journey. Making its program accessible and convenient is an essential component, and its virtual program is accessible across the United States. “Every point of support is readily available through Zoom, text messages, and phone calls. This program is designed to fit into your life seamlessly,” Harris says. “With personalized support, real food, and a focus on building a positive relationship with food, this program is changing lives one success story at a time.” Maynestreet Weight Loss & Wellness (860) 322-4725 Maynestreet.com

An easy, crowd-pleasing holiday recipe Roasted Applesauce ingredients • 10 large apples (Golden Delicious, Macoun, or Honeycrisp, for instance.) • Pinch of kosher salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar.
directions Applesauce is applesauce, right? Judy Rodgers, the Zuni Café chef known for her impeccable palate and lack of fussiness, knew better. To make her delicious roasted applesauce, peel, core, and coarsely chop about 10 large apples - you want 6 pounds (2.7kg) chopped apples. Toss with a pinch of kosher salt and the sugar sugar. Spread the apples on rimmed baking sheets and cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 375°F (190°C) until soft, 30 to 40 minutes. Uncover and raise the heat to 500°F (260°C) to brown the apples for a few minutes. Mash them with the back of a fork until you have a chunky applesauce (about 5 cups/700g). Stretch Your Fruit Use this same technique for other fruits, such as pears, peaches, or plums. Spoon it over cake or Greek yogurt, or on top of ricotta toasts.
This quick and simple recipe yields a flavorful, chunky applesauce

Located in the heart of Main Street in the picturesque village of Essex, The RiverLane boutique has caught the attention of fashion enthusiasts, near and far. The women’s clothing and accessories shop opened in September of 2022 and has made a splash in this river town’s shopping scene, drawing customers from across the state. The store’s popularity and success, says owner Robin Zubretsky, is its inspirational and diverse inventory of women’s fashions and high-quality styles, including luxury New York designer brands that are modestly priced. “We like to think of it as being similar to the fashions you’d find on the 5th floor of Saks Fifth Avenue or the second floor of Bloomingdales,” Robin says. At the same time, she adds, The RiverLane, which has about 2,000 square feet of shopping space, has also remained true to the New England fashion aesthetic that many are used to when shopping in Essex village. “I thought there was a need for a place like this that has a lot of brands you don’t normally find in a local boutique. We brought the couturial spunk of the New York fashion scene and melded it with a relaxed shoreline vibe: that sophisticated yet understated fashion CONTINUED >

sense,” Robin says. “We carry over 50 luxury brands and we try to capture that vibe in our collections.” That means that prices of designer brands at The RiverLane are modest, ranging from about $100 for a pair of Kut From the Kloth jeans to about $600 for a Veronica Beard blazer. Other designer brands the store carries include Generation Love, L’Agence, Paige, Liverpool, Rag and Bone and Nation LTD, Farm Rio, Cinq a Sept and Frame to name just a few. The store also sells a wide variety of designer jewelry and a “great selection of shoes.” But great brands are just part of the story, Robin says. The RiverLane’s staff, which includes stylists, pride themselves on their personalized customer service and helping women find the right outfit for every occasion. “Business has been terrific in the more than year that we’ve been open and we have been humbled by and are very appreciative of our customers,” Robin says. “We pride ourselves on knowing all of our customers and the brands they enjoy. We can do customized, concierge personal shopping experiences and we offer enough brands and styles for so many different looks.” The store’s client base has grown well beyond the local market, she adds, with customers from Hartford and Fairfield counties often traveling here for the day to shop and experience the local village. You can also shop The RiverLane’s brands online at TheRiverLane.com or follow them on instagram “@theriverlane”. The store regularly hosts special events, such as TGIT (Thank Goodness it’s Thursday!) where customers can celebrate the week coming to an end with some champagne and shopping. There are also Pop Up shopping events and trunk shows, including a recently held trunk show in October with L’Agence. The next pop up event will be with Fusion Permanent Jewelry on Saturday, Dec. 9. The RiverLane makes community involvement and giving back a major part of its business model, Robin adds. The store donates to the Dress for Success organization and Safe Futures, both which help women. Dress for Success provides a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and life. Safe Futures supports victims and survivors of domestic violence, among other things, to create a new life for themselves. Additionally they hold regular fundraisers for groups such as the CT Cancer Foundation and will start a new initiative with the Community Foundation of Middlesex County. “Our most recent donation was to the American Lung Association directed by one of their customers who won a raffle to give a percentage of sales on the RiverLane’s one year anniversary. We are very event-focused and we’re equally focused on giving back.”

Strolling through The Shops at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor is like taking a walk through a traditional New England village. Opened in 2004, the pedestrian-friendly outdoor lifestyle center was specifically designed to mimic a New England downtown, with spacious walkways, or a promenade. Its unique outdoor spaces create gathering places for visitors to meet with family and friends. Automobile access down the mall’s “main street,” Evergreen Way, allows convenient parking in front of your favorite stores and restaurants. Evergreen Walk has an array of retail and dining options, including Apple, Anthropologie, Burtons Grill & Bar, Carhartt, L.L. Bean, Heat Tavern, Old Navy, New Balance, Pottery Barn, The Paperstore, Williams Sonoma, and Stonewall Kitchen. “There are several new retailers coming to Evergreen Walk that we are very excited about,” said Elizabeth Zigmonth, a company spokesperson,

When it opened in 2004, Evergreen Walk became the premier shopping option east of the river, followed by an 87,000-squarefoot expansion anchored by L.L. Bean in 2007. The open-air atmosphere, convenient parking and diverse options continue to make the venue a popular destination for visitors. Evergreen Walk is also known for its family-friendly, free community programming and events throughout the year, including a summer children’s series called Summer Playdates, a summer concert CONTINUED >

We have live music and other festive fun,” Elizabeth said. “We also plan to open an inside space where the community can gather and enjoy some fun art events throughout the holidays and beyond. There’s always something special going on all year.” The connection to Connecticut and beyond is what makes The Shops at Evergreen Walk not only a shopping and dining destination, but also a gathering place for the community.

That loyalty is in part because of Sundance’s commitment to personalized customer service as well as offering classic styles while being mindful of current trends. In addition, she says, the salon has remained committed to providing high-quality educated services with prices for all beauty budgets. “We stayed accountable to the people in our client base, we care about the people that make what we do possible. Our clients matter and our staff matters. The secret to Sundance’s success, says owner Michelle Jacoby, is the business’s adaptability, commitment to excellence and personalized customer service. “We’re always adapting our offerings and services as we adjust to met the needs of changing times. We enjoy sharing special events. For instance, at our anniversary event Nov. 2 we had a cosmetic injectables provided by a well loved Doctor. The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 42
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
