LIFESTYLE LETTER

November, A Time to be Thankful November is our "Thankful," issue, a time when we highlight people and organizations who are doing things in our community that make us thankful, folks who are finding a way to give back to their communities. The Miracle League of Connecticut clearly is one such organization. The nonprofit is dedicated to providing athletic opportunities for children with physical and cognitive disabilities and operates programs in the greater Hartford area, and beyond. We spoke with its director about what the league offers. Right here in Glastonbury, we're also thankful to have a local chapter of the Connecticut Special Olympics. Founded nearly 30 years ago, it's become an important cultural, social and athletic organization for hundreds of people who have intellectual challenges. We have an inspiring story this month about how the community is rallying around a local veteran, Jason Wright, who is battling cancer that resulted from his exposure to toxic water at a military camp. Representatives from several companies, including Berskshire Hathaway HomeService, A2Z HVAC, Sullivan Tree & Landscaping, J. Murray Home Solutions and Home Depot, are helping Jason complete improvements at his family's home either for free or at a significantly discounted price. We also spoke with Dr. George Mantikas, a Glastonbury dentist with a practice in East Hampton who operates a mentoring program for students through UConn's School of Dental Medicine in Farmington. Under the program Dr. Mantikas says he tries to give back to his profession by showing young dental students how to be better practitioners by connecting personally with their patients, Our November issue wouldn't be complete without recognizing that most thankful of fall rituals, Thanksgiving Day. We have a story this month about how to pair the right wines with your Thanksgiving dinner feasts. Finally, for those hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, we have a story on how to set the mood by setting the perfect table. We hope you enjoy this month's issue of Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine and that you have a happy and bountiful Thanksgiving! GARY PERRELLI, PUBLISHER @GL ASTONBURYLIFEST YLE

The Miracle League Provides Athletic Opportunities For Challenged Kids

‘MIRACLES’ HAPPEN ON WEST HARTFORD’S FIELD OF DREAMS ARTICLE BY BRIAN BOYER

The old adage, “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game,” are words that especially resonate every time The Miracle League of Connecticut hosts a baseball game at its immaculate field in West Hartford. The Miracle League launched 11 years ago as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing athletic opportunities for children with physical and cognitive disabilities. The organization lives its motto that “every child deserves a chance to play,” says Mike Michaud, the league’s executive director. “This gives these families a place to be and provides a true community feel for those who participate,” Mike said. It took two years and $350,000 to create the West Hartford Miracle Field, the first of its kind in New England. The league hosts games on weekends in both the spring and fall baseball seasons. About 120 players participate in the spring and 75 in the fall. The organization has also since built a playground and is assisting other communities in Connecticut as they build their own fields and create programs. “One of the highlights is that this goes beyond baseball.

In our 11 years of existence, all our games have been ‘ties’ because the score is irrelevant. The parents, players and volunteers all leave that field as winners.” Michaud notes that the funds for the facility, located in the West Hartford Little League complex across from the former UConn-West Hartford campus, are privately funded. He also added that volunteers are the backbone to ensure the games are safe and a fun experience for participants. “Our goal is to give the parents of our athletes a break so they can just sit back and enjoy watching their kids play,” says Michaud, who added that most people learn about Miracle League through word of mouth, its website and on social media. Local high school and college players also participate on game days, bringing energy and enthusiasm to the facility. “We have more than 100 volunteers of all ages so the community engagement has been fantastic.” The baseball component of the Miracle League has become so popular that the organization now offers additional programs to participants CONTINUED >

with mobility issues. It sponsors the “I Can Bike” summer camp and partners with the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain to provide Miracle League Adapted Swim Lessons. Also, a Family Bowling League, an Adaptive Dance Program, and a LEGO based program are offered. Each fall, the organization also hosts “Trick or Treat – Miracle League Style.” The event features nearly 50 local businesses, civic groups and families on the Miracle League Field to create a safe setting so more than 400 children can enjoy Halloween. While located in West Hartford, The Miracle League welcomes families from communities across Connecticut and surrounding states. More than 40 towns are represented from Newtown to Springfield, Mass. Michaud said that his group – as pioneers of this work – are also supporting efforts in East Lyme and Vernon who have built Miracle Fields in those towns. “We couldn’t do any of this without the hard work and support of our participants, their families, our volunteers and sponsors,” said Michaud, a retired mail carrier who now dedicates his full effort to ensuring a rewarding experience for Miracle League athletes. “It’s exciting and rewarding to work with an organization that I am so passionate about, and the people are the ones who make it all worthwhile. Community Rallies Around Cancer-Stricken Military Veteran JASON WRIGHT AND HIS WIFE MYRLANDE SAY THEY'RE HUMBLED BY THE OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT

ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

When he sits down to Thanksgiving dinner with his family, Jason Wright says he’ll have a long list of things to be thankful for this year. The 54-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, who works as a supervisor of respiratory care at NYU Langone Health in Brooklyn, N.Y., was diagnosed in 2021 with several different forms of cancer, which he says resulted from highly polluted water he drank or used while working at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The military has determined that exposure to the water is linked to numerous cancers and conditions among former service members and the issue has spawned dozens of class-action lawsuits seeking benefits for those who lived or worked at Camp Lejeune.

While battling his own cancers these last two years, Jason, who also serves as the director of respiratory care at the West Haven Veterans Administration, and his wife, Myrlande, bought a home on Indian Hill Trail in Glastonbury. They moved here in 2023 with their three daughters, 7-year old twins, Mikaella and Abigail, and 19-year-old Victoria. The recently updated property still needed some work, including air conditioning, landscaping and tree removal, and Jason wanted to expand his unfinished basement into additional living space. He says he wants to ensure his family has a home that meets their needs for years to come. “I want to make sure they have nothing to worry about,” he says. The Realtor who helped the couple buy the home, Kadji Anderson, of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England, immediately jumped in to help by finding and lining up local contractors. And when those business owners heard Jason’s story, they banded together to help him by either doing their work at greatly discounted prices, or, in some cases, by donating goods and services for free. “When I met with him and learned he had cancer and how he got it, it really pulled at my heartstrings,” says Jim Murray, owner of the home improvement contracting firm, J. Murray Home Solutions. Jim offered to help by undertaking work at Jason’s home for a fraction of the regular cost. CONTINUED >

The community has rallied to help Jason finish the basement in his home.

He also got in touch with a manager of the Home Depot in Glastonbury, to see if the store could donate some of the materials. Home Depot has supplied nearly $6,000 worth of products and a grant has been opened for continued support of the ongoing renovations. Other local businesses donating time and services include Mike Zola of A2Z, which is installing air conditioning at a discounted price, and Jody Kretzmer, of Sullivan Tree & Landscaping, who is helping out with tree removal.

28

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

Jason says he’s touched and overwhelmed by the outpouring of care and help he’s received. “The impact of the community support is refreshing, inspirational, motivating, and above and beyond expected care and support from the community. This is what I feel like our country, which is so divided right now, should be. We are more than just fellow passengers to the grave, we are our sisters, brothers and keepers.”

THE LOCAL CHAPTER RELIES ON A DEDICATED GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS

For more than 30 years a group of parents, siblings, students, and teachers have worked together volunteering to provide athletic opportunities for a select group of people. The Special Olympics Glastonbury team was started in 1990 when Gina Vance, special education teacher and then Director of Special Education, had a vision for her students with special needs. She recruited founders Tina Yenkner, parent and Physical Education teacher and Janice Skene, Physical Education teacher, who have continued their coaching and leadership since the program’s inception.

Today, the Glastonbury delegation has about 100 volunteers and coaches who provide training and competition to about 80 local athletes in competitive sports - alpine skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, track and field, croquet, bowling and Unified Basketball. Unified teams join people with and without intellectual disabilities. “Several of our sports provide the Unified team experience in relay form,” says Lucie Carangelo, a coordinator for the local chapter. “The teams compete and train year-round. The program allows athletes to compete once they reach 8 years of age. Currently our athletes range in age from 10- 58.” Currently, Lucie and Stephanie Norwood are Local Coordinators along with Tina Yenkner, working together to manage teams, recruit coaches and partners, maintain partnerships within the Special Olympic Connecticut office staff, procure practice sites to name a few of their responsibilities. “Lucie is instrumental in organizing teams and maintaining many requirements for the State office. Stephanie is hands-on working with athletes in various sports and helping them reach their potential,” Tina says. Volunteers include parents, siblings, students, teachers, and various community members who want to help the athletes realize their dreams of taking part in competitive sports. “Without the dedicated volunteers we wouldn’t exist, they enhance the lives of all of our athletes.” Lucie says. “We are always welcoming new volunteers.” Special Olympics Connecticut offers 27 Olympic-type sports and hosts four state games annually, as well as additional qualifiers and competitions throughout the year, the state group’s website says. “Our program is unique and a very family-oriented program including parents and siblings, not only as coaches and partners, but also in the fun filled social events.” Lucie adds. “Sports programs offer much more for all participants than just skill development and competition. Giving Back Dr. George Mantikas, DMD, mentors dental students.

Pay it forward. That’s how George Mantikas, DMD, lives his life, and it’s why he’s helping future dentists learn how to treat patients, both medically and personally. A graduate of St. John’s University in New York and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Dr. Mantikas, a Glastonbury resident, mentors students from the University of Connecticut’s School of Dental Medicine in Farmington

in his office in East Hampton. There, they learn not just the ins and outs of dental medicine, but also how to manage a dental practice and how to interact with patients. Dr. Mantikas says the mentorship program is intended to provide the students with important hands-on experience in medicine. “I knew nothing about becoming a dentist when I first started this journey.

I barely knew what a filling was, and now here I am more than 30 years later mentoring dental students.” Under the program, four students visit his office for three separate sessions each academic year. “It’s fun seeing them develop their knowledge and passion from beginning to end. I am inspired by what I see.” Dr. Mantikas is a member of the American Dental Association, Connecticut State Dental Association, the American Endodontic Society, the National Society of Dental Practitioners, the Academy of General Dentists, and the Implant Society. He is also a multiple term past President of the Middlesex County Dental Society and was on staff at Middlesex Hospital for over 20 years. His success as a dentist is not just about knowledge or oral care and hygiene, he says. As he guides students in patient care, he makes sure to stress the importance of building trust and relationships with the patients. “When you’re doing work in someone’s mouth, it’s vital that the patient trusts you as a doctor and as a person,” says Dr. Mantikas. “I want these students to see the way patients are supposed to be treated. In the end, it comes down to what’s best for the patient.” He says the mentor-mentee relationship not only helps bring out the best in students, it also paves the way for the field to cultivate talent across generations. Implants, bridges, crowns, root canals and veneers are all part of the services Dr. Mantikas offers at his practice. Part of the process for the students is to learn about all of those procedures while building the patient-doctor relationship. “Students need to figure out which part of dentistry is of most interest to them and what they believe is also best for their future patients,” says Dr. Mantikas. “This mentorship program is a fantastic way to give back to this community while guiding the future of our profession. It’s a win-win for all involved.” Dr. George Mantikas 142 East High St., East Hampton 860-267-6666 Drmantikas.com Dr. George Mantikas, DMD, in his offices. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

42

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious. “

What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around 20 bucks, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.

Gather

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.
