Christina Baribault-Ortiz and her sister, Raeann Baribault Schwartz, both of Baribault Jewelers at 81 Rankin Road, spoke with us about their family's jewelry business, founded in 1948. The business, which prides itself on its longtime local roots and its ability to change its designs with the times, recently underwent a renovation and is offering new, upscale jewelry options.

Now that we're all done with this summer's record-setting heat it's time to start thinking of easing into the cooler months. September is our Style Issue and this month we have several stories for you about fall fashions, both for kids and adults, as well as home and jewelry.

We visited Avon's fashion boutique scene where we spoke with the manager of Coco Lily, at 17 West Main St., and Diesel & Lulu's, at 24 East Main St. The two upscale boutiques are located in historic Avon Village and they shared with us their outlook for fall fashion trends. We also spoke with Kim Reid, of The Silver Dahlia, a gift and clothing boutique at 41 Hebron Ave., here in Glastonbury, on what she's seeing for trends in autumn fashions.

And speaking of protecting yourself and your home, we visited with Nicholas Paindiris, a founding partner of the law firm Brown, Paindiris & Scott, LLP  about his firm's long history of providing comprehensive legal services to residents and business owners in Glastonbury and beyond.

For a look at kids’ fashions, we visited  LemonLlama, a unique chil dren's clothing boutique at 29 East Main St., Avon, for a look at how and why the business caters to the fashion needs of children.

Are CoolWeYet?

September is hurricane season here on the East Coast so we also spoke with Brendon Montstream, owner of Streamline Generator in Marlborough, on the growing popularity of automatic generators and how they can help you weather power outages.

We hope you enjoy our Style Issue and that you have your best September yet!

Generators Bring Peace of Mind in Storm Season ARTICLE BY EILEEN M. MCNAMARA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY VIVIEN STEMBRIDGE Streamline Generator Installs Automatic Generators That Can Keep The Lights on in Any Weather LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HOME SERVICES18

A licensed master electrician, Brendon started his business, Streamline Electric in 2006 in Marlborough.

Streamline was recently named a Platinum Dealer by Kohler, a designation reserved only for high-vol ume dealers who sell hundreds of generators a year, Brendon says.

“I started out on my own, a one-man show for the first four years doing residential and commercial service work.”

He also hired Jim McCue, an electrician who became Streamline’s lead generator installer and technician. His expertise in the field, Brendon said, is so well-known that his nickname is “Generator Jim.”

The company now has five employees; two installers/ technicians, an office manager and two apprentices, and recently rebranded as Streamline Generator.

After the Halloween Blizzard customers started asking about automatic, or stand-by, generators, the kind that come on automatically when the power goes out.  The popularity of automatic generators has skyrock eted as summer and winter storms have intensified in recent years and power grid issues - including rolling blackouts and brownouts - have increased.

It’s unusual, but not unheard of, to get snow in October in Connecticut, but the freak blizzard that hit the state on Oct. 29 that year brought high winds and heavy snow at a time when pumpkin decorations still adorned front porches and most of the leaves were still on the trees.

“I’ve built my business on being on time and selling quality products, so Kohler is a good fit for me. They sell the best generator that money can buy and they provide support for their dealers.”

Montstream 19| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/GLASTONBURYSEPTEMBER 2022

For Brendon Montstream the blizzard was memorable for another reason: It changed the trajectory of his elec trical contracting business.

As the generator part of his business picked up, Brendon says, he sought out a generator manufacturer that he could rely on for quality and reliability and selected Kohler.

Power outages were long and widespread and there was a scramble for days after the storm among residents desperate to find generators.

Many of those who want automatic generators include retirees who spend more time at home, along with people who work at home, a population that has jumped signifi cantly in the last few years because of Covid-19.

The Halloween Blizzard of 2011 was the storm of a life time for many.

“When the snowstorm hit I sold a lot of generators and hired another employee and all we did was put in genera tors for a long time,” Brendon says.

Brendon

“It’s a big deal if you work from home or spend a lot of time at home and you don’t have power for days. People don’t want to have to get a hotel room, especially if they have children or pets. Having a generator gives you peace of mind when a storm hits and provides all the conve niences of home if the power goes out.”

Fall. For many, it’s the best time of year. After a long, hot sum mer clad in casual tees, shorts and linen everything, it’s time to embrace the cozy, chunkier knits and plush fabrics of autumn. We turned to the experts in some of our local boutiques for their takes on what the upcoming season is promising.  Coco Lily | 17 West Main St., Avon | Cocolily.com | 860-284-9770

Another key trend as we approach the holidays, she adds, includes luscious jewel tones, creams and navy hues.

Other main trends, she says, include maxi dresses as tran sition pieces, luxe loungewear and elevated athleisure pieces that are great for working from home or traveling. “Shackets,” sweater-jacket fashions, are also a big look for fall. With a nod toward the menswear trend, shackets for women are now more femininely styled and shaped and are a versatile layering piece for multiple seasons and climates.  Coco Lily’s inventory is a beacon for their many clients who head south for the colder months.

“We want them to have something adaptable to bring with them and a fashionable shacket is a great multipurpose piece,” Carter says.  “They’re perfect for layering in coziness without sac rificing style, ideal for working from home or travel.”

“This fall, comfy and cozy are the keys to layering,” says Carter Margison, Coco Lily’s manager and buyer. “We’re seeing fringe as a major detailing effect for the season; we have a wonderful fringed duster from Brochu Walker that I’m currently coveting for the fall.”

This cool and eclectic boutique features a little bit of everything heav enly! The bright and chic interior is a beautifully curated assortment of seasonal favorites; every nook and cranny is specially designed to delight the senses. Owned by Liz Zieky, Coco Lily’s collections include fashions for women, baby, home, gift, and menswear.

Some of the core brands Coco Lily carries include Frank & Eileen, Kinross Cashmere, Minnie Rose, Brochu Walker and Golden Goose (amazing sneakers!) for women. Also, Jelly Cats and Elegant Baby, Juliska and Barefoot Dreams for baby, home & gift. Coco Lily is particularly excited about their annual Kinross Cashmere Trunk Show event happening September 9-11. A not-tobe-missed fashion event to add to your calendar!

Located in the heart of the Glastonbury business district, this gift, home, and clothing boutique sells a variety of home decor, jewelry, purses, bath and body products, and casual women’s clothing. Its owner, Kim Reid, says fall trends this year in her clothing inventory lines continue to lean heavily on the “boho chic” aesthetic. Silver Dahlia carries Free People fashions, along with Hello Mello, By Together, &Merci, and FashionTIY. Trending designs for the autumn include distressed jean jack ets, floral dresses and tops, and trending colors are olive green and rust, Kim says.  “Boho designs are still really popular this fall along with the trend of distressed fashions,” she adds.

The Silver Dahlia  | 41 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury thesilverdahlia.com | 860-633-1817

Margison advises women to add a few trend pieces to their ward robe for newness but keep their staples handy.

“Having your core staples is important, your great tees - like our fabulous Frank & Eileen tees - a perfect chambray shirt, some elevated leggings… you can build so many outfits with just a few great pieces.”

“They’re really cute,” she says.  Diesel & Lulu’s  | 24 E. Main St., Unit 2, Avon On Instragram @dieselandlulusct | 860-986-2511

“I encourage women not to look at sizes; every brand’s sizing depends on where it’s made,” she says. “Throw out preconceived notions of what size should be and instead, try on pieces that speak to you. Does it spark joy and confidence? How do you feel in this piece? Our business model is based on a casual approach, and we keep prices reasonable so we can inspire people to take a chance on a new style. It’s all about comfort and color and fun. We want our customers to feel bright and joyous in our clothes.”

One of the looks Kristin particularly likes is a versatile hoodie. It can be dressed up or down and blended with other pieces to create a variety of looks. That concept is a pillar in Diesel & Lulu’s style philosophy, she says.

Knits, she adds, are a key ingredient this fall.

Other trends the boutique is working into their lineup are a nod to menswear with wide-legged pants and jackets, and a mix of elevated athletic wear. Some silhouettes that will continue from summer include batwing sleeves, maxi/midi dresses moving from warm-weather boho prints to lush fall fabrics, cargo joggers and skirts, vegan leather and modified moto jackets.

“Big chunky knits in oversized sweaters, head-to-toe knits are a look happening now. And scarves are a strategic basic for layer ing, especially blanket scarves which are so warm and versatile.”

“Gnomes are still so popular that people now decorate their homes with them all year ‘round,” Kim says. She points to a pair of Halloween gnome decorations to make her point.

In her home inventory, Kim adds, the farmhouse, with its heavy reliance on black and white designs, is also a popular trend still this fall. Also showing no signs of waning is the gnome trend, which started out as trendy Christmas decor.

This boutique takes comfort decidedly fashion-forward. Kristin Trainor, the shop’s owner, says fall fashions are “definitely going to be all about transition layering but with a fresh emphasis on color and fabrics. We’re keeping our classic tanks and tees and layering them in with colorful pieces and chunky knits. Like most of the world, our clientele has been staying home for the past several years and they’re ready to go out and socialize, but not ready to give up the comfort. Comfort and color are the names of the game right now." She adds, “Bright colors are so big for fall. Pink is exploding on the scene; it’s huge again. We’re also loving beautiful bluish charcoals, caramels, and cinnamon. Green is being carried into fall but in sea greens and a lovely viridian green which is kind of a blue-teal shade.”

Every woman, she adds, needs a “capsule wardrobe” of staples that she can change up with layers and accessories.

FASHION FOR KIDS

With so few children’s boutiques in Connecticut, LemonLlama is a special place. Susan’s goal for the store is for it to be an exciting shop to peruse, but also be a bou tique that fits everyone’s needs.

Both parents and children are particular in what they like to wear and what they want to purchase. That’s why LemonLlama provides a variety of brands including Mayoral, Joules, Angel Dear, Magnetic Me, Quincy Mae, Me & Henry, Vignette, Haba toys, and others. Macko and her staff ask questions to help their customers choose the right fit for them because children’s fashion is no longer one-type-fits-all. The store also organizes all merchandise by size and tries to add whimsy to its displays.

LemonLlama has several categories of clothing, including christening and communion fashions, special occasion dresses, handmade items, toys, and hair accessories.

Located in historic Avon Village, LemonLlama sells chil dren’s fashions that are designed for fun.

“I never aspired to own a store. I had done craft shows for years of marketing applique work that a friend and I did. I've always loved fashion and its creativity but didn't necessarily want the commitment to store hours,” she says. Susan says she’s committed to making sure she can best offer a wide variety of styles and trends and frequently travels to Boston and New York on buying trips.

The store’s owner, Susan Macko, started out in retail in 2005 working with a few other women in a similar bou tique. As the group grew apart Macko moved the store to its current location on East Main Street.  She says the store’s name was an inspiration that came to her one day when she saw her pet llama. The store sells clothing for girls, ranging in age from newborns to junior teen, and for boys, ages 10-12.   Susan focuses her inventory on how important it is for children to find clothes that they both feel comfort able with and that help them stay true to themselves.

“Customers are grateful that we are here and that we offer a quality selection of both classic and on-trend styles. All of us here want to help the customer find the right outfit or gift - it's not about the sale, but rather the right choice. It's always heartening to hear ‘my granddaughter just loved that dress - wouldn't take it off.’ We gift wrap, we ship, we can monogram or personalize, and we often text photos to customers (or new callers) who ask if we have a particular item for a photo shoot or Christening or wed ding, or whatever the occasion may be.”

“This brand, which began with empowering sticky notes covering our mirrors and words of affirmation saved to our iPhone background, has allowed us to FOUNDED IN 1948 BARIBAULT JEWELERS CONTINUES TO CHANGE AND IMPROVE WITH THE TIMES

One of those is the Power To B line of custom designed bracelets that Christina and Raeann created. The jew elry collection includes positive affirmation Power words significant to each customer and their life’s jour ney. The collection was the outgrowth of Raeann and Christina’s own fertility challenges.

Founded in 1948, Baribualt’s today is still fami ly-owned and operated by siblings Lewis Baribault III, Raeann Baribault Schwartz, Christina Baribault-Ortiz and their parents, Lew Baribault Jr., and Cathy Baribault;

While Baribault Jewelers specializes in diamonds and diamond engagement rings - with more than 500 styles currently in stock - Christina and Raeann say Baribault’s also creates and sells many other types of jewelry and has a host of new and exciting services and design options they’ve launched recently.

The Baribault family, from L-R: Nichole Baribault, Lewis Baribault III, Lewis Baribault Jr., Raeann Baribault Schwartz, Christina Baribault-Ortiz, Dan Ortiz, Cathy Baribault, and Evan Schwartz.

For the Baribault family, jewelry is personal and each piece they create or sell tells its own story.  That unique focus extends from the concept for every new piece of jewelry Baribault’s highly trained staff creates all the way to how their Rankin Road store was recently renovated.  “We like to be innovative and modern, so when we did the remodel and renovation we did it in a more natural and modern way so we could be alongside our custom ers and guide them through the process, as opposed to the customer being on the opposite side of a glass case,” says Raeann Baribault Schwartz. “We designed our store with a modern flare so that our showcases are 360 degrees, no other jewelry store has been designed like that,” says Christina Baribault-Ortiz

Another new innovation at the store, the sisters said, is the Permanent Jewelry Bar that launched in August named "B Linked".

The latest trend, permanent jewelry is custom fit to your wrist with no clasp and welded shut so it stays on as long as you want. The bracelets are 14k gold and designed to be so light and dainty you can barely feel them. They make perfect friendship bracelets, bridesmaids gifts, sister-sister or mother-daughter bracelets.

The Power To B line was featured at an Academy Awards pre-Oscars party this year where Christina and Raeann met with and gifted 100 of the bracelets to celebrities who attended.

The redesigned store also now includes a jewelry transformation section where customers can bring in a piece of jewelry they want to update.  “It’s called B Transformed,” Christina says. “A lot of people have jewelry that they’re not wearing anymore and our designers can find out why and then take their precious gemstones or metal and redesign them into something that they love and will wear again. They can walk out with something that’s meaningful and totally recreated just for them and their own style.”

“You can come in with your significant other, your bestie or family members and you can have this experience where you get this piece of jewelry that is welded and stays on all the time and it links you to yourself or the person you’re doing this alongside,” Raeann says.  You can make an appointment for the Permanent Jewelry Bar at elers.com/permanent-jewelry.baribaultjew

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOB ABBATE MARKETING A LOCAL AND MULTI-GENERATIONAL LAW FIRM

“We are a local law firm that is committed to the town of Glastonbury and will always be. That’s why we bought the Old Town Hall building on Main Street in 1999. We cater to and focus on the legal needs of individuals and their small businesses.”

Attorneys Nick Paindiris and Richard Brown founded Brown Paindiris & Scott, LLP on Jan. 1, 1977. The firm has been rooted in the Glastonbury community since it opened its doors, first at Glen Lochen and at 2252 Main St., in 1996. For over 45 years, Brown Paindiris & Scott has been devoted to its Glastonbury friends and neighbors in many different ways, including sponsoring and partici pating in Town events.  The firm consists of a dedicated team of lawyers that provide comprehensive and personalized legal services in nearly every area of law.  Attorney Nick Paindiris explained that the firm’s success stems from its lawyers’ attention to detail, commitment to their clients and community, and strategic decision-making.

The firm has grown from four attorneys at its found ing to twenty-four attorneys today. Former attorneys of Brown Paindiris & Scott include a former justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, a current Connecticut Superior Court Judge, a State Commissioner, and four Probate Court judges, including the current Probate Judge for Glastonbury and Hebron, Sean M. Peoples.

The firm has also grown its legal practices over the years, especially the estate planning, probate and elder law department. The estate planning law department focuses on making sure a person’s wishes are carried out after they are gone or when they are unable to make those decisions themselves. Nick explained, “It’s life planning. You cannot avoid death, and you want to provide for your family. You do that through a thoughtful process that protects your assets and makes sure your assets are passed on to your family.”

“Brown, Paindiris, and Scott has always been a general practice firm focused on helping individuals and their small, growing businesses. Dedicated to building and solidifying relationships with its clients, the firm prides itself on continuously adapting and growing to meet individual clients’ needs.”

Estate & Elder

“That arrangement is by design,” Attorney Paindiris offered, “because we intend on assuring a meaningful succession at Brown, Paindiris & Scott. We’ve been around a long time, but we foresaw that we needed to plan for the future; Like every small business, a succession plan is vital for the long-term viability of any business. The legal profession is no exception.”  Brown, Paindiris & Scott, LLP 2252 Main St. | 860-659-0700 | bpslawyers.com

The firm brings this thoughtful approach to every aspect of their practice, including how to plan for its future. The firm consists of an impressive range of three generations of lawyers: with a third of its lawyers 65 years and older, a third in their 40s-50s, and a third millennials. This multigenera tional team ensures that the firm can navigate complex legal issues with creative solutions, flexibil ity, and diversity of perspectives for a long period of time in the future.
