Style is more than what we wear - it’s how we live, create, and express who we are. This month, we’re celebrating all things style with a lineup of local stories that are inspiring, creative, and uniquely Gilbert. As someone who lives here and loves fashion, I’m always looking for ways to mix local finds with personal style. That’s why I’m so excited about this issue - it’s full of people and places that make our community feel fresh, bold, and full of personality. We’re kicking things off with a feature on Dixxon Flannel Co., founded by Gilbert’s own Danny Dreyer. What started as a simple idea turned into a nationwide brand known for its edgy, quality flannels - and we loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at how it all came to life. If you’re a fan of treasure hunting, don’t miss our local guide to Where to Thrift (and Consign) Like a Local. Whether you’re looking for a designer piece or something totally unique, these shops make it easy to add style and personality to your wardrobe. We also sat down with the team at Skinfinity Medspa, where their focus is helping people feel confident, refreshed, and cared for. Their story is all about passion, wellness, and redefining beauty in a way that’s personal and approachable. And we can’t wait for you to meet Katie Levine, a local creative with an inspiring story and a style all her own. There’s so much more inside - and we hope it sparks your own creativity and helps you connect with some of the amazing people and businesses that make Gilbert shine.

Treasure Hunting in Gilbert Where to Thrift (and Consign) Like a Local Whether you’re after a designer handbag, the perfect pair of vintage jeans, or just a better way to shop sustainably, Gilbert’s secondhand scene has something for everyone. From trendy consignment shops to dig-worthy thrift stores, Gilbert is packed with gems - you just have to know where to look. Local wardrobe stylist and image consultant Jackie Wheeler, owner of Jackie Style Imaging, has been thrift and consignment shopping since high school. Now, she helps clients build their wardrobes with a mix of second-hand finds. “I love finding unique pieces, I love saving money - and I love that these clothes aren’t going to end up in a landfill,” she says. Here are a few of her go-to spots in and around Gilbert: Turn Style Consignment One of Jackie Wheeler’s top picks, Turn Style offers a curated mix of gently used designer pieces and everyday wear with a more classic, timeless feel. “If you’re looking for bags, their pricing is usually better than other consignment stores,” she notes. Shoppers can expect quality items that lean more polished than trendy, making it a great spot for building a lasting wardrobe. Bonus: Turn Style often has a surprisingly strong selection of home décor and furniture worth browsing.

Uptown Cheapskate Trendy and teen-friendly, Uptown Cheapskate is a great spot for scoring what’s in style right now. “They’re great if you’re looking for what’s currently trending,” says stylist Jackie Wheeler, who points shoppers here for on-trend clothing, shoes, and accessories. While the selection is plentiful and curated with current styles in mind, Jackie notes that prices can run higher than other local spots. Her tip? Keep an eye out for sales and markdowns to score the best deals. Deseret Industries Tucked into the corner of the intersection at Val Vista and Williams Field, Deseret Industries is Jackie’s go-to for home goods and décor. “Every time I go in, I find something fabulous,” she says. This clean, well-organized thrift store spans over 54,000 square feet and offers budget-friendly furniture, housewares, and clothing. Worth the short drive, the Gilbert location is a hidden gem with purpose—and plenty of unique finds.

Goodwill Gilbert is home to several Goodwill locations, and while they can be hit-or-miss, stylist Jackie Wheeler recommends stopping in regularly to score unexpected treasures. Inventory changes daily, so frequent visits increase your chances of finding something special—whether it’s a vintage statement piece, designer denim, or a unique home décor item. With a little patience and a good eye, Goodwill can yield standout pieces at unbeatable prices. “You never know what you’ll find,” Jackie says, “and that’s the fun of it.” What to Know Before You Go According to Jackie, the best way to thrift successfully is to start in your own closet. “Figure out what you actually need,” she says. “If you know you’re missing black shoes or a sleeveless dress, focus your search on those categories.” She also suggests: • Don’t buy for the label—buy what fits and fits now • Inspect everything carefully for damage or stains • Wear a tank top so you can try pieces on over your clothes (especially important at Goodwill, which no longer offers fitting rooms) Know each store’s return policy—many only offer store credit or none at all And for those looking to sell at consignment stores? “Make sure your items are clean, current, and ready to go on the floor,” Jackie says. “Some stores prefer clothes on hangers, but most stores just appreciate items that are well-presented.” Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or brand new to consignment shopping, Gilbert offers a stylish, sustainable way to refresh your wardrobe—and maybe even discover your new favorite piece.

KATIE LEVINE’S JOURNEY THROUGH LIGHT, STORY, AND CONNECTION ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER For photographer Katie Levine, capturing moments through a lens has always been second nature. “My dad always says I started taking pictures as early as age three,” she recalls. Growing up with a father who was a hobbyist photographer, Katie was surrounded by cameras and creativity from the beginning. That early exposure sparked a lifelong love for photography, storytelling, and the art of observing people in their truest form.

In high school, Katie became the go-to photographer for senior portraits, which led her to pursue photography in college. During her time as a student, she landed an internship at Vogue Magazine in Los Angeles. After graduation, Katie took a leap that would define her career - an opportunity to intern and work for world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz in New York. “That experience completely transformed the way I see light and storytelling,” Katie says. “I’ve always been inspired by editorial work and the power of portraiture to capture someone’s personality.”

18

B ACK STAGE | STYL E + BE AU T Y

Over the years, Katie’s style behind the camera has become more refined and intentional. She gravitates toward clean, editorial-inspired compositions and draws inspiration from her surroundings. “I want my clients to walk away just as happy with the experience as they are with the final result,” she explains. “There’s something special about helping people feel confident and aligned with who they are - especially through an image.” While she enjoys all types of photography, editorial work is where she thrives. “I love the collaborative process - working with a team of talented creatives to bring a

“THERE’S SOMETHING INCREDIBLY FULFILLING ABOUT CREATING IMAGERY THAT FEELS TIMELESS.” shared vision to life,” she shares. “There’s something incredibly fulfilling about creating imagery that feels timeless.” One of the most meaningful shoots in Katie’s career was with model Lucky Blue Smith for V Magazine, inspired by James Dean. “I only took about 100 frames, but what we captured in that short time was insane,” she says. “When Lucky posted one of the images on Instagram, it caught the attention of the creative director at Paper Magazine. That meeting ultimately changed the course of my career.” The connection led to new opportunities, including working with Kourtney

Kardashian and guest photographing on America’s Next Top Model in Season 24. Katie often finds inspiration from film, TV, and the work of photographers like Richard Avedon. “I’ve always been drawn to images with a cinematic feel,” she notes. “Avedon’s use of natural light and clean backgrounds has had a major influence on my work.” Outside of photography, Katie enjoys time with her husband and daughter, Liora. “Becoming a mom has completely shifted my perspective - in the best way,” she says. “She’s slowed me down and helped me savor life outside of work.” To unwind, Katie

loves cooking, working out, and watching shows like Severance and Shrinking. She and her husband also enjoy Downtown Gilbert. “There’s something about walking up and down that strip and grabbing dinner. I even had my bachelorette dinner there, so it holds a lot of fun and meaningful memories.” Katie’s next creative chapter includes launching her podcast, Beyond My Lens, this year. “My podcast is about bringing the stories behind the images to light,” she explains. Upcoming guests include Grammy-winner Abigail Barlow, entrepreneur Matt Gottesman, and actor Titus Makin from The Rookie and Glee. Her goal is to give listeners a deeper look into the people behind the portraits and celebrate their journeys. Many are surprised to learn Katie has completed over 3,000 FaceTime headshots since the pandemic. One standout project was for Persana, where she worked with top plastic surgeons including Dr. Paul Nassif. “It reminded me how resourceful and adaptable photography can be.” For Katie Levine, photography is more than a profession - it’s a way to connect, create, and capture the beauty of moments that last forever.

INSIDE SKINFINITY MEDSPA, WHERE PERSONALIZED CARE, COMMUNITY, AND EXPERT TREATMENTS COME TOGETHER TO RESTORE CONFIDENCE AND RADIANCE YEAR-ROUND.

When Shannon Vail, owner and founder of Skinfinity Medspa, speaks about her experience in the field of aesthetics, her enthusiasm is clear to see. Having spent close to 15 years in medical aesthetics, Shannon has created something much bigger than a company, she’s created a haven of self-healing, restoration, and transformation in the heart of the city. “I was in love with aesthetics from the beginning,” Shannon says. “Getting people to feel good about themselves, not just on the outside but inside as well, is such a fulfilling thing. What we offer at Skinfinity is the best of both worlds: pampering and realistic outcomes.” Born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota, Shannon moved to Arizona nearly 13 years ago with her husband. Having built a life and family, now a proud mom of three, Shannon went on to advance her career, eventually taking the leap to build her own medspa. She envisioned a place where she could blend her clinical experience with her inner values: warmth, integrity, and connection. “I’ve always had a heart for leading and teaching,” she says. “Opening Skinfinity gave me a chance to do that in a way that aligned with my beliefs, leading with patience, grace, and openness.” That dream expanded when Shannon partnered with Angelyn Wolforth, a lifelong friend with extensive business administration and finance experience. The two wives, mothers, and dog moms pooled their complementary talents to form a powerhouse partnership. Their values are the cornerstones of Skinfinity’s culture, a community in which teammates feel empowered, clients feel heard, and beauty is addressed with purpose and heart. CONTINUED >

Skinfinity is not your typical medspa. It’s a high-end aesthetic and wellness center offering a full array of services from specially tailored facials and laser treatments to injectables, chemical peels, body contouring, and wellness treatments. Every service is done in a very clean, and friendly environment by all-female providers, who have an accumulated 45+ years of combined experience. What sets Skinfinity apart, however, is its personalized, resultdriven treatments, and being a locally owned and operated practice. “We set the highest standards for the quality of patient care and communication. “Our therapists spend time with each client,” Shannon explains. “We don’t think in terms of clients looking like everyone else. Each treatment plan is tailored to your skin, your needs, and your particular lifestyle.” Clients come not just for the treatments, but for the experience, the friendly greeting, the friendly staff, and the real friendships that develop along the way. “We hear it all the time: ‘It just feels different here.’ And that’s exactly what we set out to create.” When deciding where to open Skinfinity, there was no question: it had to be Gilbert. “Home is this community,” Shannon says. “Where we reside, raise our kids, and encounter individuals who happen to live in the same community. Gilbert encourages small business in a manner that’s distinct, and we needed to be part of that neighborhood.” It wasn’t an entirely strategic decision - it was very personal. Shannon and Angelyn saw that the East Valley needed a unified, highend aesthetic and wellness lifestyle, and they filled the void. As the seasons change, so should your skincare. Shannon offers her top five expert tips to keep your skin looking its best during the colder months: • Add Hydration: With drier air, it’s imperative to boost your moisturizer. Look for hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or squalane to lock in moisture. • Don’t Skip SPF: Even in winter, and especially in Arizona, you’re still exposed to UV rays and blue light. Daily sunscreen is non-negotiable. • Exfoliate Consistently: Incorporate exfoliants like retinol and AHAs to keep skin fresh and encourage cell turnover. • Show Love to Lips and Eyes: Use a nourishing balm and hydrating eye cream. These areas are delicate and prone to dryness. • Visit Your Aesthetician: Fall and winter are perfect seasons for corrective treatments. It’s also a good time for hydrating facials to maintain your glow. Skinfinity even offers complimentary consultations to create at-home routines tailored to individual needs. In addition to beauty, Skinfinity focuses on empowerment, community, and gratitude. Shannon is quick to offer kudos to the staff with whom she works daily. “I’m so proud of our team. Their dedication and care are what make this space special,” she says. “And to our clients, thank you. Your support keeps our dream alive.” As Skinfinity celebrates three years in business, Shannon and her team look ahead with hope and excitement. They’re not just building a brand, they’re nurturing a community rooted in faith, family, and a belief that everyone deserves to feel confident and cared for. Whether you require a moment of relief, a long-term solution for your skin, or simply a space where you feel uplifted, Skinfinity is not just a medspa. It’s home for your skin, your soul.

HOW DIXXON’S FLANNEL CO. IS WORKING TO BUILD A COMMUNITY

BUILDING A FLANNEL EMPIRE 26

Valley entrepreneur Danny Dreyer is building a business rooted in passion and purpose, blending community values with philanthropy and one heck of a sense of style.

home since 2013. “I love watching the town grow,” he shares. “It’s constantly changing and improving, but it still maintains that down-home, family feel. That’s what’s special about Gilbert.”

"WE’RE NOT JUST MAKING FLANNELS; WE ARE ALSO WORKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY.” Dreyer is the brain behind Dixxon Flannel Co., which has moved from an underground concept into an international brand. What began as a humble concept by Dixxon has become a household name among fans of high-quality, wrinkle-free flannels. “I started Dixxon in 2013 because I wanted to perfect the flannel shirt.” Says Dreyer. “I was frustrated with how classic flannels would wrinkle or shrink and not quite fit quite perfectly. We set out to build a product that would stay crisp and look amazing, wash after wash.” That mission expanded into the foundation of the Dixxon brand, which Dreyer refers to as a “Classics Redefined.” Dixxon now has more than 100 employees, and the company continues to disrupt the clothing world by being fixated on details that elevate classic basics, specifically flannel shirts, to a higher level of for, fit, and function. Born and raised in Orange County, California, Dreyer has now called Gilbert

Danny and his wife, Allison, live in the Gilbert community, and they’re deeply committed to seeing their hometown succeed. From attending Echoes Church to cruising local bike paths on beach cruises, eating at Buck & Rider, and enjoying shaved ice from Bahama Bucks. “My perfect day is an easy one,” Dreyer responds. “Coffee at Hooligans, lunch in downtown Gilbert, ice cream at Salt & Straw, and ending with an Arizona sunset. It’s the little things.” That focus on the little things translates into the way he runs Dixxon, which while extremely successful continues to maintain its “mom-and-pop” values. “I always wanted Dixxon to be of the people, by the people, meaning they are the heart of it all,” he states. That integrity is evident, not only in the products themselves, but in the customer service, culture, and commitment to giving back of the company. Philanthropy is at the heart of Dreyer’s purpose and is now what fuels

his enthusiasm above all else. “The giving side of our business has become my own ‘why’.” he says. “It’s what gets me up every morning.” Dixxon Flannel Co. has donated millions to causes ranging from breast cancer and autism to children’s cancer treatment, youth outreach, and veteran’s assistance. Every year, the company works to organize much-needed school supply, clothing, and monetary donations for children and families in need. The reach and effect have been amazing, but Dreyer points to his workes and community as the reason why. “We’re incredibly blessed to do this, to do it here, and to do it together,” he says. “These are the people and places in life that create everlasting memories.” With an East Valley showroom location, Dixxon is now a hometown favorite and an international destination brand. The East Valley location is accessible for locals and out-of-towners alike. “We have people coming straight from the airport to shop at our store,” says Dreyer. “It’s a hub that’s easy to get to and has allowed us to organically align with other hometown brands such as the Phoenix Suns, The Shop Beer Co., State 48, and Cider Corps.” Dreyer’s non-fashion voice is as varied and full-blooded as his work. He’s fixated on vintage cars, lowriders, Harley-Davidsons, and bikes, which he

"THE GIVING SIDE OF OUR BUSINESS HAS BECOME MY OWN ‘WHY’. " affectionately calls an “unusual addiction.” He also enjoys interior design and practices physical and mental wellness, all of which he considers to be art. But above all, family comes first. Danny and Allison are committed to building a life that’s rooted in faith, love, and community - and they’ve found the perfect place for that in Gilbert. “In life, I’ve found that the simple and little things are often the most important and impactful,” Dreyer reflects. On the horizon fo Dixxon is continued expansion and growth. The staff is committed to revitalizing staples and using their platform for a higher purpose. From announcing new collaborations to diving deeper into philanthropic efforts, Dreyer’s vision continues to drive the company forward, with grit, appreciation, and heart. For those unfamiliar with Dixxon or the causes they champion, Dreyer offers a simple invitation: “Come check us out. Be a part of what we’re doing. We’re not just making flannels; we are also working to make a difference in our community.” And with every shirt sold, every dollar raised, and every community touched, Danny Dreyer and his team are doing just that, one classic redefined at a time.

SA L A D FOR DI N N E R

Transform boring greens into satisfying evening meals that actually leave you full and happy

Let’s be honest – when someone suggests “salad for dinner,” most of us picture sad desk lunches and rumbling stomachs by 9 PM. But what if we told you that salads could be the most satisfying, crave-worthy dinners in your weekly meal plan? The secret isn’t adding more lettuce. It’s about building layers of flavor, texture, and yes, actual

substance that makes your stomach say “thank you.” Think hearty grains, protein-packed additions, and dressings so good you’ll want to drink them straight. These are not your diet-culture salads – they’re legitimate meals that happen to be incredibly good for you. We’re talking about dinners that your teenagers will actually request.

Your Closet’s New Favorite Destination A CREATIVE, COMMUNITY-DRIVEN SPACE REDEFINING RESALE THROUGH CURATED FASHION, LOCAL SELLERS, AND SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING.

The Rich Hanger was founded by two moms, Ashley and Christina, who wanted to make fashion fun, sustainable, and community-focused. They saw the value in everyday closets and created a space where people could sell, shop, and connect. Sellers rent shelf space, set prices, and The Rich Hanger handles the rest, offering a boutique experience that’s creative and profitable. Each rack is curated by a local seller, making every visit unique. With rotating inventory, local events, and big plans for expansion - including new locations and a digital platform - The Rich Hanger is more than a store. It’s a vibrant, community-driven take on resale.

“We don’t just resell clothes - we celebrate the people behind them. Every rack has a face, a story, and a unique sense of style.” 36

I NSP IR E D BY | STYL E + B E AU T Y

Q: What’s your mission at The Rich Hanger? Our mission is to redefine secondhand shopping by making it stylish, accessible, and community-driven. We believe fashion should be expressive, circular, and inclusive - meaning it reflects individuality, keeps clothing in use longer, and welcomes everyone to participate. Fast fashion has a massive environmental impact, and we’re passionate about offering an alternative that feels good, looks good, and does good. By giving clothing a second (or third) life, we’re helping reduce waste while also making fashion more fun and affordable for everyone.

Q: How does the shelf rental model work? Think of it like Airbnb for your clothes. Sellers rent rack or shelf space in our shop for a set period— usually a week or month. They bring in their curated items, set their own prices, and style their space however they like. We take care of everything else: merchandising, promoting the shop, and managing all sales at checkout.

Q: What makes The Rich Hanger different from traditional consignment? It’s all about control, flexibility, and real-time results. Unlike traditional consignment, where items might sit unsold for months and sellers receive a smaller payout, our model empowers sellers to manage their inventory, style their space, and keep more of what they earn. Inventory moves quickly, and sellers can restock anytime. Plus, the shop has an inviting, boutique vibe that draws in shoppers looking for something fresh and unique.

Q: How do you make secondhand shopping feel fresh and exciting? We prioritize curation, storytelling, and community. Our sellers are passionate - whether they’re stylists, collectors, or just have great taste - and they bring in standout, high-quality pieces. We rotate inventory constantly, which keeps things feeling new and exciting. We also host events, collaborate with local creatives, and highlight the stories behind the racks to create a meaningful, connected shopping experience.

Q: Any exciting plans ahead? Yes! We’re actively scouting for new locations to expand our in-person presence and building a digital version of our shelf rental model so sellers and shoppers from anywhere can join in. We’re also developing style services to offer more ways for people to explore fashion, both online and in-store. Our goal is to grow into a full-circle fashion community that’s vibrant, creative, and accessible to all. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G I L BE RT

Gilbert's 20-25 year old neighborhoods are proving that character beats cookie-cutter every time.

Are Older Homes the New Luxury? It started subtly. Buyers would walk into a house and their eyes would light up at exposed brick walls. They’d run their hands along original hardwood floors like they’d discovered buried treasure. Suddenly, authentic charm became more coveted than granite countertops and stainless steel everything. The shift has been remarkable. I remember when everyone wanted the biggest, newest house with all the bells and whistles. Now? People are actively seeking out homes with history, character, and stories. They want the quirky built-ins, the unexpected nooks, the craftsmanship you just don’t see in modern construction. It’s like watching a collective awakening to what makes a house feel like home.

Gilbert may be barely a century old, but watching this upcycling in our older neighborhoods unfold feels like witnessing the town discover its own identity. These neighborhoods aren’t just trendy—they’re becoming the architectural DNA of what makes Gilbert, Gilbert.

The epicenter of this movement? Gilbert’s established, beloved neighborhoods like Seville, Val Vista Lakes, Agritopia, and Power Ranch. I’ve sold countless homes in these communities over the years—families drawn to the larger yards, mature trees, and excellent schools. Now these neighborhoods are hitting that sweet spot with their 20-25 year old homes. They’re old enough to have developed real personality but young enough to embrace modern upgrades seamlessly. And tucked away in the Heritage District up in the northeast corridor, you’ll find some absolute beauties that represent pure Gilbert history. But here’s what really strikes me—those mature trees that drew families here decades ago have become the unsung heroes of sustainability. These natural canopies can slash summer cooling costs dramatically. It’s Arizona wisdom that predates any green movement: plant trees, stay cool, save money. The environmental consciousness doesn’t stop there. Homeowners are layering modern efficiency onto vintage bones in fascinating ways. Solar panels crowning 1980s rooflines. Smart thermostats controlling systems in homes that remember when programmable was cutting-edge. High-efficiency insulation tucked behind walls that have already weathered decades of desert heat. It’s this blend that makes Gilbert’s established neighborhoods so compelling. These aren’t museum pieces frozen in time—they’re living, evolving homes that honor their past while embracing the future. These renovated homes tell a unique story about how we want to live now, using the solid foundation of how we lived then. Gilbert may be barely a century old, but watching this upcycling in our classic neighborhoods unfold feels like witnessing the town discover its own identity. These neighborhoods aren’t just trendy—they’re becoming the architectural DNA of what makes Gilbert, Gilbert. And honestly, that’s pretty exciting to be part of.

Investing in Your Wardrobe Without Compromising Your Style ARTICLE BY LISA WOLF

1. IT’S POSSIBLE TO SHOW YOUR UNIQUE STYLE WITH NICE CLOTHES WHILE ALSO STRETCHING YOUR DOLLAR One’s wardrobe says a lot about a person and it is important to dress to the occasion whether it be work or play while still expressing yourself. Building a wardrobe can be a costly expense but it’s possible to show your unique style with nice clothes while also stretching your dollar.

3. SOME PIECES ARE SIMPLY BETTER WHEN THEY ARE SECOND-HAND Some pieces are simply better when they are second-hand like worn denim and lived-in boots or leather that’s softened over time. Get creative and add touches to your old favorites with patches, embroidery, and even natural flower colors transferred to fabric. Grab your old t-shirts, family vintage fabrics, or lace, and pull it all together into something new and memorable. CONTINUED >

2. A FUN, SUSTAINABLE WAY TO BUILD A HIGH-QUALITY AND STYLISH WARDROBE Second-hand and vintage-style clothes are a fun, sustainable way to build a high-quality and stylish wardrobe without breaking the bank. Buying hand-made and second-hand also reduces the demand for new clothing production, which helps reduce waste and the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

5. SIMPLE, WILD, CLASSIC, COLORFUL; DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHOW YOUR STYLE The best way to keep your wardrobe fresh is to look for either trendy or classic new pieces and match them with your favorite vintage or second-hand pieces, like a new dress with your grandma’s old leather jacket or a recently purchased foundation piece with a skirt made from vintage fabrics. Simple, wild, classic, colorful; don’t be afraid to show your style and your financial fashion savvy at the same time.

4. IT WAS SO PERFECTLY HER AND ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS My sister, Haley, used an 1800s petticoat and blouse, salvaged Edwardian style Christening gowns and a tablecloth, and other fabrics to create the most amazing vintage-style wedding dress. It was so perfectly her and absolutely gorgeous.
