Celebrating 5 Years of Stories, Community, and Growth

As we celebrate our magazine's 5th anniversary, I can’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come and the incredible journey it has been. For the past 2.5 years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of this publication, and it’s been a truly rewarding experience to see how much we’ve grown and how deeply we’ve connected with the Gilbert community.

From the very beginning, our goal has been to share the stories that matter most to our readers, shining a light on the people, businesses, and events that make our town so special. Working with Robin and Kristy has been an absolute pleasure. Their dedication and passion for this magazine is truly inspiring, and it’s an honor to work alongside them.

Of course, we couldn’t let October pass without celebrating our love for food and drink, as it’s traditionally our food and drink issue. However, with our 5-year anniversary, this edition is particularly special. We’re excited to highlight Spinato’s, a beloved local spot, and share some unique Gilbert-inspired recipes from AZ Home Grown. And don’t miss the special Gilbert Water Tower drink created by Liquid Caterers, a fun nod to one of our town’s iconic landmarks.

In this special anniversary issue, we also take a moment to celebrate our journey by revisiting some of our favorite past features. We’ve included a closer look at Robin and Kristy’s own story, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul behind this publication.

Finally, we’re thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes look at the amazing people who have contributed to making this magazine what it is today. Their hard work and creativity has been the driving force behind our success.

Here’s to five years of stories, community, and connection. Thank you for being a part of our journey, and we look forward to many more years of sharing the best of Gilbert with you.

The Healing Power of Forgiveness

I believe we all have heard incorrect or unhealthy statements related to forgiveness. One that I heard often was, “Forgive and forget.” I remember feeling so annoyed and betrayed by that statement. I had a reason to be hurt and it felt wrong to just forget what had been said or done to me. My attitude towards forgiveness shifted when someone explained to me that the bitterness, resentment and anger I was holding onto was causing me harm and not the person who hurt me.

They used the analogy of drinking poison. They explained that I was drinking the poison of bitterness, resentment, and anger while waiting for the person who hurt me to feel this pain. Truth was the person who hurt me was going on living their life completely unaffected by my bitterness, resentment, and anger. I was the only one being hurt by this.

Forgiveness is not making peace, erasing the past, weakness, excusing others’ actions, justifying what was done, rebuilding trust in others, denying accountability, forgetting or pretending it didn’t happen, or restoring the relationship to how it was before.

Forgiveness is finding peace of mind, healing and moving forward, recognizing your pain, improving your overall mood, increasing your hopefulness for the future, releasing anger, taking your power back, and protecting yourself from continuing to be hurt by that person/event.

Most importantly forgiveness is a gift that you give to yourself!

Gentle Reminders:

1. Forgiveness does NOT excuse what happened.

2. Forgiveness does NOT mean restoration of the relationship.

3. Forgiveness is not linear.

4. Forgiveness is you choosing to set yourself free.

Strategies spoke to teachers at Fusion Academy ahead of their first week of school at their new Gilbert Campus. The topic was how curiosity, empathy, and trust can deepen relationships & improve readiness for students and teachers.

REVISITING THE MOST READ STORIES FROM 2019-2024: THE MOMENTS THAT SHAPED LIFESTYLES AND CAPTURED OUR HEARTS

Blushing Cactus Photography

Two Boys,  One Family November 2022

This story is so special to us. Our magazine has always been a way for our us to learn about our community and to try to bring neighbors closer together - this was as true after COVID as it is today. The series of fortuitous events that led to this story coming together just demonstrates how much a story can sometimes fight for our attention. Let’s address some of the unease that this story may have caused, we are not members of the church and do not wish to promote one world view over

another. To us, this was a story of parents who see their children heading out for the first time into the world and the courage it takes to make this sacrifice. The Willams’ story is no different than a lot of families who see their young adult leave for college or see them pursue opportunities in a distant city. Well… as you may have noticed, this one has a twist. You will be glad to know that Jesse and Josh are now back home and we will be talking to them for our November issue.

Ladies of the East Valley

May 2021

In the wake of Covid's isolation, our first in-person gathering was a breath of fresh air. Amid the laughter and joy of reuniting, the room was filled with many extraordinary ladies, however this was my first opportunity to be introduced to a person that can best be described as awe-inspiring.: Kelly Geisler. Kelly's impact on our community is immeasurable, her dedication shining like a beacon of hope. With seemingly effortless grace, she tackles monumental challenges—from teen homelessness to supporting lonely seniors, providing heat relief, and nourishing our veterans. Her tireless efforts inspire us all, reminding us of the power of compassion and community spirit. Kelly, you are a true light in our lives, and your selfless contributions make our world brighter every day. Thank you for being an incredible friend and community hero.

Stirling Synchronicity

February 2021

We had known about Lindsey Stirling for a while having come across one of her earlier videos on YouTube – Zelda was always one of our favorite games of all time. When we found out that she actually grew up in Gilbert we knew we had to reach out to her team to see if we there was a way to tell her story. We are so grateful to her and the team to share some thoughts and amazing pictures from one of her performances. It really shows her passion and the love she has for her craft and her home town.

When All you can think about is Fashion

September 2022

Aleisha Yanagawa is a force of nature. We could tell from our first meeting that there was definitely a story there – the stylish Italian running shoes helped a lot. She was in the middle of opening her own store, dealing with all the complexity of being a single mom with two teenage daughters and navigating the intricacy of interior design, contractors, and city inspectors. Even then, we knew it was not going to stop her. The photos from the shoot were simply amazing and picking the cover was easy – a new take on “The Thinker” by Aleisha Yanagawa.

August 2021

We were so thrilled to see family events filled with dirt, adrenaline, and the sweetest little speedsters you’ve ever seen?  Luckily our team was introduced to the thrilling world of BMX racing through the eyes of pintsized powerhouse Evie Currie. This 4-year-old firecracker is redefining what it means to be a “biker chick,” leaving boys in her dust and collecting trophies to fill her whole house.

But it’s not just about the races – it’s the heartwarming community of families cheering each other on, sharing equipment, and bonding over Ring Pops and snack stands. The Chandler Racetrack was where we witnessed the pure joy of the teeniest kids like Evie tearing up the track every Monday and Friday. As we watch these tiny titans conquer jumps and turns, it simply reminds us that we all can live in that moment of no fear and because of family and friends are there to cheer us on.

Biker Girl Roaring

Tigers

August 2022

August was such a fun issue! Summer memories with Nadine and her boys, meeting Micheal, Emma, and Tubba Bear, breakaway roping with Olivia, Gabriella, and Tory at the rodeo. This issue was full of fun and amazing adventures. None captured more the energy of that issue more than the Roaring Tigers! The boys competed in the Gridiron Flag Football league and had just won their first championship ring. You can tell by the energy captured in the cover that this team was unstoppable! Shortly after the issue dropped, we headed out to the practice field on a warm August evening with a box of magazines. The smiles on their faces and the pride of making the cover made our hearts melt. What an amazing shot! Alli Lewis, the photographer credited with the shot is one of the team moms and a teacher – photography is just something she does for fun.

Gilbert Super Dads

June 2021

It’s always the story behind the story that really gets us.   What started out as a simple project to honor dads in our community turned into so much more.   This was our first attempt in a true community involved story as we had asked for our readers to submit nominations as why their fathers, husbands, fur baby dads, grandfathers, and bonus dads should be called Super Dads.   We had so many, many nominations that I wish I could have had more pages.  Ozzy Lewis’ wife and kids sent in the sweetest nomination that we had to choose them for our cover dad.   The fun part was we had placed a few copies at a local shop so that we could surprise Ozzy with the cover.   Words can not express the honest emotions that just flowed out of him when he realized. Hey that’s me on the cover.

November 2019

Talk about a lucky break for us newbie publishers! We snagged our first celebrity cover with none other than Andy Stanley, the mega-church pastor and bestselling author. On a sunny September day, he graciously shared his time and wisdom with us at Mission Church in Gilbert. Who knew our little dream to connect our community could lead to such a powerful moment?

Andy painted a picture of churches as vibrant community hubs, not just Sunday hangouts. Think dance recitals and club meetings - a real "seven days a week" kinda place. Little did we know how precious this vision would become when the pandemic hit soon after.   Sometimes, the smallest opportunities lead to the biggest blessings!

Community is a Mission Horse Sense

April 2020

We were over the moon with excitement to share a story about our favorite 4-legged celebrities - the Salt River wild horses. These majestic creatures have stolen hearts all over Gilbert!

We had a blast chatting with the rescue foundation superheroes who play “horse detective,” keeping tabs on the herd’s health from afar. And get this - we uncovered a secret society of wildlife photographers who’ve mastered the art of horse paparazzi! They snap stunning shots while giving these wild beauties their space.

It’s quite a balancing act - helping without helicopter parenting these free spirits. Hats off to these amazing folks for letting us all enjoy a slice of wild horse heaven!

One Step Forward with Chris Powell

February 2023

From fitness guru to suddenly vanishing from the spotlight, Chris Powell’s story took an unexpected turn - one we felt compelled to share. In a heartfelt chat, Chris opened up about his rollercoaster ride from top of the world to struggling to face each day.

But don’t worry, this tale has a silver lining! Chris found his way back to the light, discovering a new calling in helping others. Our morning with him was a mix of teary moments and belly laughs - proof that even the toughest challenges can lead to beautiful new beginnings.

We’re truly honored Chris trusted us with his journey. It’s a reminder that even heroes have their battles - and comebacks.

Follow the White Rabbit

October 2020

This article was a challenge. Not for the writing, mind you, that came very easily. It was late summer of 2020, the first wave of COVID was finally tapering out and this was my first time out at a public venue, sharing a space with a lot of strangers. Just sitting at the bar made me tense. Luckily, the staff at the White Rabbit are magicians and discussing cocktails with Fernando made me forget about all the stress we had endured and reminded me how fun it was to just hang out. I’ve always been a cocktail aficionado, but I was impressed by the high level of knowledge and skills displayed by the wait staff. Fernando blew my mind with his take on a variation of the Sazerac –The Shadow Train. My very Mad Hatters hat off to Fernando and Megan for the amazing memories and the wonderful cocktails!

Someone to Call

November 2022

Picture this: savvy teens manning the phones and responding to texts, offering a lifeline to their fellow teens in crisis. It's peer support at its finest. What really impressed me is how they connected with so many kids willing to volunteer -- high school football players, even; we know they are busy!   It's like they've cracked the code on making mental health support "hip." (Is that still a word? Oh, who cares!) In all seriousness, though, this program is bridging a crucial gap. It's heartening to see young people taking charge of their mental health narrative. If this is the future, count me as a hopeful optimist!

Touchdown for Charity

June 2024

Let me tell you about the heartwarming story we discovered this year for our men’s issue! Remember Mark McMillian, that speedy NFL player they called “Mighty Mouse”? Well, he’s traded his football for a spatula, and he’s grilling up a storm of kindness!

Mark and his wife Adreanne have fallen head over heels for Ryan House, Arizona’s only children’s hospice. They’re not just writing checks - Mark’s teamed up with Chef Russell from Hotel Valley Ho to cook for the kids and throw the most amazing fundraisers.

Mark’s using his fame to bring joy and comfort to these brave kids. Talk about a touchdown for kindness! We are so lucky he has decided to call Gilbert home.

Meet the Man behind Benny Blanco Tortillas

December 2023

Oh boy, did we stumble upon a tasty treasure this year! Benny Blanco Tortillas, run by the one and only Christopher Hudson (aka the "Big Bald Guy"), is THE hottest thing at Gilbert Farmers Market. This tortilla wizard took grandma's recipes and sprinkled in some magic to create pure deliciousness. From fancy wheat to gluten-free, he's got a tortilla for every tummy. And get this - he even gives free tortillas to folks who need 'em. Talk about a big heart to match those big flavors! These tortillas are so good, they should come with a warning label!

Rock It Man

December 2022

Holy drumsticks, Gilbert! Our very own  Recker Eans rocketed from local wonder to national sensation faster than you can say "ba-dum-tss"!

This pint-sized percussion prodigy became the face of Peacock TV's "The Kids Tonight Show," rubbing elbows with Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels. By day, he was navigating sixth grade; by night, he was lighting up 30 Rock! When he was not cracking jokes on-air, Recker was thrashing at School of Rock proving he's got more rhythm in his pinky than most of us have in our whole bodies. Watch out, world – Gilbert might just have the next Lar Ulrich living among us.

Pawsitively Perfect

Fair warning: extreme adorableness ahead!

August 2024

We were looking for a fresh take on pet portraits and boy did Hannah Carl deliver. She is truly a photographer with a soft spot for furry faces. This former shelter volunteer turned pro knows how to catch your pet’s true personality – whether they’re a natural-born model or more of a camera-shy cutie.

Hannah’s secret sauce? A mix of patience, creativity, and yes, the occasional “pupsicle” prop. (Trust us, it works!) Her photos pop with color and playfulness, capturing those slice-of-life moments that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear.

From goofy grins to soulful stares, Hannah’s lens tells a pet’s unique story.

A LEGACY OF FLAVOR, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY

Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen

ARTICLE BY KRISTA CARPENTER-BEASLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SPINATO'S FAMILY
“Our joy comes from making sure guests feel like they are part of our family.”

If you’ve lived in Arizona, chances are you’ve heard of Spinato’s Pizza. This beloved pizzeria has spent the past 50 years growing from its humble beginnings into a cherished local institution. What began as a small family-owned shop has flourished, largely due to word-of-mouth and an unwavering commitment to quality. Today, Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen proudly serves guests at six locations across the Phoenix metropolitan area, with the newest addition located at the Epicenter in Agritopia, Gilbert.

Ken and Elaine Spinato’s journey began in 1974 when they opened their first pizzeria in Scottsdale. Their opening day sales totaled just 69 cents for an iced tea, a modest start that belied the future success of the business.

For the Spinato siblings, Nicole and Anthony, the family business has been a lifelong journey. “We grew up in the family business,” says Anthony. “When we were teens, we worked in almost every role… in the kitchen, making pizzas, as servers, interacting with guests, and eventually working our way up to management.” Though they both had different career aspirations—Nicole dreamed of being an interior decorator, and Anthony an architect—they found a way to incorporate those passions into the business as it expanded.

Today, the Spinato family continues to be deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of their restaurants. Anthony’s wife, Jaime, serves as the brand manager and community outreach director, while Nicole’s husband, Chris, manages catering. Even Ken Spinato, the patriarch of the family, remains active, visiting the restaurants regularly to ensure that the high standards he and Elaine set all those years ago are still being met.

What makes Spinato’s special? Some might say it’s their signature sauce, while others might point to the high standards of their food. But for the Spinato family, it’s all about delivering what they call “The Spinato’s Experience.” From the moment guests enter a Spinato’s restaurant, they are treated like family, a testament to the family’s belief that they are in the “people” business just as much as the “pizza” business. This focus on people drives their commitment to the community, to local vendors, and to ensuring that every guest leaves satisfied.

In Anthony’s words, “Our joy comes from making sure guests feel like they are part of our family.” And it’s this joy, this passion for people, that has made Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen a beloved Arizona institution for nearly five decades.

Spinato’s commitment to the community extends beyond their restaurants. The family’s dedication to charitable works is nearly as legendary as their pizza sauce. “We exist to enhance the lives of others,” says Anthony, echoing a mantra that has been passed down from his parents. Throughout the years, Spinato’s has supported countless local organizations, and in 2009, they established the Kenneth A. Spinato Foundation to focus their efforts on three key areas: kids, veterans, and service animals.

Jaime Spinato leads the company’s community outreach initiatives, working with more than 130 nonprofits each year. This includes pizza parties, gift card donations, and silent auction items, all of which contribute to the nearly $100,000 Spinato’s donates annually. One of their most recent initiatives is “The Kindness Challenge,” a campaign to support St. Vincent de Paul by encouraging guests to

purchase “Kindness Bags” filled with essential items for those in need.

Spinato’s has become synonymous with sports in Arizona, holding the title of “Official Pizza” for the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and, most recently, the Arizona Cardinals. This partnership ensures that fans can enjoy fresh, never-frozen pizza at Footprint Center in Phoenix and State Farm Stadium in Glendale, a testament to the quality and consistency that Spinato’s has upheld for nearly 50 years.

The decision to open a location at the Epicenter in Agritopia, Gilbert, was driven by a shared vision. After being introduced to Joe Johnston, the founder

of Johnston & Co., the Spinato family knew that the Epicenter’s focus on community and family was a perfect match for their brand. “Gilbert’s strong family demographic aligns with our family-friendly culture,” says Anthony. The response from the Gilbert community has been overwhelmingly positive, validating their choice to expand there.

When it comes to eating out in Gilbert, Anthony has a few favorite spots, aside from Spinato’s, of course. For coffee, it’s Peixoto, and for dining, he enjoys the offerings of Buck & Rider, Matt’s Big Breakfast, and Gadzooks. And when he wants to bring home a treat for his daughters, nothing beats a ciabatta loaf from Source.

ROBIN AND KRISTY REFLECT ON FIVE YEARS OF COMMUNITY, CONNECTION, AND GROWTH

Gilbert’s Story Unfolding

As we celebrate the five-year anniversary of Gilbert City Lifestyle, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on this incredible journey. When we first started, our vision was simple yet ambitious: to create a magazine that would truly represent the spirit of Gilbert, a town we both love dearly. We wanted to tell the stories of the people who make this community so special, to capture the growth and changes, and to connect neighbors in a meaningful way.

CONTINUED >

Looking back, one of our favorite parts of running the magazine has been meeting the people in our community and sharing their stories. Gilbert has grown so much over the past five years, and it has been a privilege to document that growth. Whether it’s introducing newcomers to the town or reminding long-time residents of the rich history and culture that make Gilbert unique, we’ve cherished every moment of this journey. It’s personal for us—we’ve built relationships with business owners, artists, and everyday residents, each adding another layer to the tapestry that is Gilbert City Lifestyle.

The early days of the magazine were nothing short of crazy! We had this

dream, but bringing it to life was a challenge. Several others had tried to start a publication in Gilbert before us, but none had managed to get the first issue out the door. We knew we had to build trust within the community, both with our readers and with the partners who would help make the magazine a reality. That meant being consistent and maintaining a high level of quality in every issue we produced. There were days when it felt like we were taking a leap of faith, but we were determined to make it work.

One of the moments that really stands out to us was when we found out that every issue of Gilbert City Lifestyle was being archived by HD South. This recognition was incredibly meaningful

to us—it was a validation of our place in Gilbert’s ongoing story. Knowing that we are not just part of Gilbert’s present, but also its future, is something we are incredibly proud of.

Throughout these five years, we’ve seen how the magazine has helped bring the Gilbert community closer together. In a time when digital media often dominates, we’ve remained steadfast in our belief in the power of print. There’s something enduring about a printed magazine—it’s tangible, lasting, and offers a sense of connection that’s hard to replicate online. Through our stories, we’ve tried to introduce neighbors to one another, spotlight local successes, and celebrate the aspirations that drive the people of Gilbert. We believe that by telling these positive, authentic stories, we’re helping to foster a sense of unity and pride in our community.

As we look to the future, we’re more excited than ever about what’s to come for Gilbert City Lifestyle. This year, one of the most thrilling developments has been setting our roots down at Kiln, the work-share location in San Tan Village Mall. This new space will not only provide a physical hub for the magazine but also serve as a gathering place for the community—a spot where partners, readers, and contributors can come together to celebrate what makes Gilbert special. We see this as a significant step in expanding our ability to bring the community together, and we can’t wait to see how it will enhance our work.

CONTINUED >

Moving forward, we’re eager to grow our team and continue telling the great stories that have become the hallmark of Gilbert City Lifestyle. There’s so much happening in our town, and we want to capture it all. We’re committed to expanding our reach, deepening our connections within the community, and shining a light on the exciting things happening around town. With five years behind us and many more to come, we remain dedicated to our mission of bringing Gilbert closer together, one story at a time.

This five-year milestone isn’t just a celebration of the magazine; it’s a celebration of the community that has supported us and made this journey possible. We are so grateful to be a part of Gilbert’s story and to have the opportunity to share that story with all of you. Here’s to the next five years and beyond—may they be filled with even more stories, connections, and community spirit. Thank you for being part of our journey.

OUR TEAM

Being a writer for Gilbert City Lifestyle has allowed me to share impactful and important stories with those living in Gilbert and elsewhere in Arizona. This magazine is truly a "feel good" publication that celebrates our unique and diverse community!

At Gilbert City Lifestyle, I immersed myself in community storytelling and connected with many local business owners. It was a valuable transitional period that allowed me to hone my skills after college. I’m endlessly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a magazine keeping hyperlocal journalism alive and well.

I'm all about empowering, educating and inspiring families to explore and adventure. Having contributed to the magazine as a travel writer brought me so much joy and fulfillment, and the layouts, look and feel of each spread beautifully captured our family's motto: take the trip. I am beyond honored to have played a small role in the ever-evolving success of Gilbert City Lifestyle.

Gilbert's Goddess Salad

FRESH, LOCAL INGREDIENTS IN A VIBRANT, FLAVORFUL SALAD

Gilbert’s rich agricultural history shines in the Gilbert Goddess Salad, crafted by Marissa Delgado with Arizona Homegrown Experience and a passion for fresh, local flavors. This vibrant dish features locally sourced ingredients, from crisp romaine lettuce and tangy cherry tomatoes to savory goat cheese. Topped with a zesty homemade dressing using Queen Creek Olive Mill olive oil and tequila cask-aged vinegar, this salad blends playfulness and elegance. It’s a perfect addition to your holiday gatherings, celebrating the best of Gilbert’s farms and culinary traditions.

Fresh local romaine lettuce is lightly brushed with Queen Creek Olive Mill roasted garlic oil and torched for a fun flavor kick! If you don’t have a torch, you can quickly grill the lettuce over high heat to achieve a similar smoky effect. Next, toss local cherry tomatoes in the same flavorful oil and lightly torch or grill them until they are just beginning to blister. Shuck fresh corn, grill it until charred, and then slice it into 1/2-inch disks for a sweet, smoky crunch. To add a unique touch, incorporate 1/2 a boiled quail egg from a local Gilbert family farm, lending a rich, creamy element to the dish. For a delightful crunch, sprinkle Tajín-spiced chicharrones over the top, offering a gluten-free, high-protein alternative to traditional croutons. Finish the salad with crumbles of local goat cheese and a generous drizzle of freshly made Gilbert Goddess dressing.

For the Gilbert Goddess Dressing:

• Queen Creek Olive Mill Olive oil: 8oz

• Fresh lemons: 2

• Dijon mustard: 2 T

• Local honey: 2 T

• Queen Creek Olive Mill tequila cask-aged vinegar: 2oz

• Cilantro: 1 bunch

• Fresh oregano: 1 bunch

• Jalapeño: 1

• Salt, pepper, chili flake to taste

• Garlic: 1 clove

• Shallot: 1/2

• Avocado: 1

Combine all ingredients in a blender except the fresh herbs and olive oil. Blend until smooth, then slowly incorporate the olive oil to emulsify. Lightly chop the herbs and blend them with the avocado into the dressing. Add water if necessary. Drizzle over the salad, enjoy with your favorite veggies, or use as a marinade for chicken.

For added flair, top the salad with grilled vegetables or serve alongside a crisp white wine to elevate your meal further.
