Maybe it’s time we go “touch some grass”

Welcome to our Men of Gilbert issue.

While each issue is always a source of pride, there are a few issues throughout the year that I am particularly looking forward to: our Kids & Pet in August just for the fun of it, our Thankful issue in November for reminding us of all the things we are grateful for, and our Ladies and Gentleman of Gilbert issues in May and June because it gives us an opportunity to meet individu als who make an impact in our community.

As it has now become a new tradition for us, choosing the spotlight Men of Gilbert, we try our best to pick men from different age groups, different backgrounds, different occupations. People whose friends, family, colleagues, and partners have brought to our attention by nominating them. People who have one thing in common, they are active and engaged in our community by serving our town as public servants, elected officials, business and non-profits leaders, teachers, and mentors.

You may know some of them, and some you may not have heard of. They do small things, and big things, without expecting recognition. To quote one of this year's Men of Gilbert : “What you do when no one is watching matters.” We know, we appreciate, and we wish to recognize them. Them and the many other members of our community who do similar things all around us - every day. Things that make Gilbert the place we love.

So, if you get a chance, say hello and introduce yourself. Even better, if you see someone who does small things - and big things - as if no one is watching, please say hello and let them know they are appreciated, maybe drop us a note and share who they are.

As is said online, maybe it’s time we go “touch some grass”. Time to reach out to the real world and make a connection.

A Cigar MOMENT

The cigar is quietly making the case for slowing down.

There is a moment, usually about ten minutes into a fine cigar, when something shifts. Your shoulders drop. Your phone stops feeling urgent. The conversation gets better. Time, for once, cooperates.

That is not an accident. That is the cigar doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Unlike nearly every other indulgence in modern life, a cigar cannot be rushed. It will not reward multi-tasking. It does not care about your schedule. A premium cigar takes 45 minutes to over an hour to enjoy properly, and if you try to hurry it, you will ruin it. In the best possible way, it puts you in your place.

CRAFT FIRST, EXPERIENCE SECOND

Every premium cigar starts long before the first draw. Tobacco is grown in specific soils, aged with intention, and blended by hand into something that carries real complexity. Flavor notes can range from earthy and peppery to creamy, cedar-forward, or lightly sweet. Think of it less like cigarettes and more like wine. You develop a palate over time, and the journey is the point.

For beginners, start mild. Connecticut-wrapped cigars offer a smooth, balanced entry point without overwhelming the senses. Strength refers to nicotine, body refers to flavor intensity, and you do not need to tackle both at once.

THE RITUAL MATTERS

Cut it clean. Light it slowly. A bad cut chokes airflow; a rushed light burns uneven. Use a butane torch, toast the foot gently before your first draw, and take your time. One draw every 30 to 60 seconds keeps it burning right and prevents overheating. The rhythm you find becomes part of the experience.

PAIRING DONE RIGHT

A great cigar gets even better with the right companion in your glass. A rich, full-bodied cigar alongside a bold bourbon is a classic for a reason. Something lighter plays beautifully with aged rum or a well-made cup of coffee. The goal is balance, not competition. Neither the drink nor the cigar should overpower the other. They should make each other better, and when they do, you will notice.

YOUR HUMIDOR IS NOT OPTIONAL

If you are going to invest in good cigars, invest in keeping them properly. A quality humidor, ideally Spanish cedar-lined, stored at 65 to 70 percent humidity and around 68 to 70 degrees, is the difference between a great smoke and a disappointing one. Too dry, and the cigar burns hot and fast, losing all its flavor. Too humid, and it becomes spongy, resistant to burning,

"People, enjoy conversations over fine cigars, and the world tends to slow down a little. Cell phones are put away, and people genuinely want real connection."

and potentially moldy. Season your humidor before use, keep it out of direct sunlight, and resist the urge to open it constantly. Even a small desktop model with a reliable hygrometer and humidity packs will protect your investment and make every smoke better. The humidor is not just storage. It is part of the ritual.

WHERE GILBERT SLOWS DOWN

Locally, Fox Cigar Bar has become the spot for enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike. Their curated selection and welcoming atmosphere make it the kind of place you walk into not knowing much and leave wanting to know more. Whether you are picking something for a quiet evening at home or just looking for a knowledgeable recommendation, it is a room that makes you feel at home. Their Instagram and website make it easy to stay connected and see what is new.

As they put it, “At Fox, it’s about creating a space where people can slow down, enjoy a great cigar, and feel completely at home, whether you’re new to cigars or have been enjoying them for years.”

For something that comes directly to you, H&C Mobile Cigar Lounge is rewriting what a cigar experience can look like, and the story behind it is as good as the experience itself.

Owner Hollywood searched three months before finding the right Airstream, and it came with a story. Custom-built as a Miranda Lambert tour green room, it never made it to the road after the pandemic shut everything down. Hollywood and his then-partner Charles saw the feature wall and built-in bar and built their vision around both. Six months later, H&C was born. Hollywood has been at the helm solo since 2022.

And the experience is the point. “The journey of H&C Mobile Cigar Lounge has been a fun one. I get to meet all types of people, enjoy conversations over fine cigars, and the world tends to slow down a little. Cell phones are put away, and people genuinely want real connection.”

Unlike nearly every other indulgence in modern life, a cigar cannot be rushed. It will not reward multi-tasking. It doesn't care about your schedule.

They have pulled up to milestone birthdays, retirements, and even baby showers.

“While I sell cigars, what I really offer is a meaningful experience. Making people happy or surprised that their wife booked a cigar lounge for a milestone birthday, that’s what I enjoy.”

At its core, H&C exists for exactly what Hollywood set out to create: bringing people together over cigars, relaxation, and genuine camaraderie.

THE BIGGER POINT

A great smoke is an invitation to be present, to have an actual conversation, to sit with someone and say nothing important and mean everything by it.

Steve Northern breaks down what men often ignore: early signs, hormone balance, and how a smarter, full-body approach can restore energy, clarity, and confidence in everyday life.

FEEL LIKE YOURSELF AGAIN

We sat down with Steve Northern, the provider and owner of Limitless TRT & Aesthetics, to talk about a topic more men are paying attention to: hormone health and overall performance. What stands out immediately is his direct, results-driven approach and genuine passion for helping men feel like themselves again. Rather than relying on quick fixes, Steve focuses on the full picture, examining how hormones, lifestyle, and long-term health work together. In this conversation, he breaks down common misconceptions, early warning signs, and when it is time to take action. It is an honest, informative look at what men often overlook and how the right approach can make a meaningful difference.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FOCUS ON MEN’S HEALTH AND HORMONE OPTIMIZATION?

It started with what I was seeing firsthand. Friends, family, even younger guys were dealing with low energy, brain fog, and overall decline. It made me want to understand why it was happening and

whether something could be done to change it. That curiosity turned into a real commitment to helping men feel like themselves again.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS MEN HAVE ABOUT TESTOSTERONE AND AGING?

A lot of men think testosterone is the fix for everything. It is important, but it is not the whole picture. Hormones work together, and if you are not looking at all of them, you are missing opportunities to truly optimize how you feel and perform.

WHAT ARE EARLY SIGNS OF LOW TESTOSTERONE MEN OFTEN OVERLOOK?

Things like fatigue, brain fog, low motivation, weight gain, and decreased drive often get brushed off. Even mood changes or just feeling “off” can be early indicators. These symptoms tend to build over time if ignored.

HOW DOES LOW TESTOSTERONE IMPACT MORE THAN JUST ENERGY OR SEXUAL HEALTH?

It goes deeper than most people realize. It can create inflammation at a cellular level, which affects overall health. Over time, that can contribute to more serious concerns like heart disease or stroke.

WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE GET THEIR HORMONE LEVELS TESTED?

Sooner than most think. Even if you feel fine, having baseline labs every couple of years gives you something to compare to. It removes the guesswork if something changes later.

WHAT ARE CLEAR SIGNS IT IS TIME TO SEE A DOCTOR?

Persistent fatigue, weight gain that will not budge, rising A1C or insulin levels, inflammation, or sexual health issues. If you are

noticing patterns that are not improving, it is time to look deeper.

WHAT DOES A FIRST APPOINTMENT LOOK LIKE?

It is simple and low pressure. You meet with a provider, talk through symptoms and goals, and typically do labs. Results come back

“FEELING OFF IS NOT SOMETHING TO IGNORE. WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY AND ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES, YOU CAN RESTORE ENERGY, IMPROVE PERFORMANCE, AND TRULY FEEL LIKE YOURSELF AGAIN IN EVERY AREA OF LIFE.”

quickly, and from there, a personalized plan is created based on your needs.

WHAT LIFESTYLE CHANGES MAKE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE?

Dialing in your diet, paying attention to when you eat, staying active, limiting plastics, and understanding your baseline health all play a huge role. Lifestyle is often more impactful than people think.

HOW DOES TESTOSTERONE THERAPY WORK AND WHAT CAN MEN EXPECT?

There are several options, from injections to creams to pellets. When done correctly, men often notice better energy, improved mood, clearer thinking, and better body composition. The goal is to help them feel like themselves again.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO MEN WHO DO NOT FEEL LIKE THEMSELVES?

Do not ignore it. Pay attention to what your body is telling you and take the step to learn more. Even a simple consultation can give you clarity and direction.

Men of Gilbert

MEET THE MEN OF GILBERT 2026, EACH WITH A STORY SHAPING LEGACY AND LASTING IMPACT

ARTICLE BY CITY LIFESTYLE TEAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE LEVINE PHOTOGRAPHY

There is no single way to define what it means to be one of the Men of Gilbert. The individuals featured here come from different backgrounds, industries, and walks of life, yet each was nominated for the same reason: the impact they’ve made on the people and community around them. These are stories shaped by hard work, evolving goals, and moments that didn’t always go as planned but led somewhere meaningful. Some lead from the front, others from behind the scenes, but all share a commitment to showing up with purpose. This feature is not about one version of success. It is about the many ways it can look, told through the men who are helping define Gilbert in their own way.

His story is rooted in service, shaped by decades of pouring into people and community. With more than 25 years in the nonprofit space, his path began in an unexpected place as a golf professional before discovering a deeper calling through youth programs and mentorship. That early experience sparked a passion that would lead him to the YMCA, where he built both a career and a family foundation. After years of leadership roles, including time with CUSD and serving on numerous boards, Steve returned to nonprofit work with renewed purpose. Today, as Interim CEO of AZCEND, he continues to lead with heart, focusing on impact, mentorship, and community growth. Outside of work, Steve is known for rarely saying no to a chance to volunteer, coach, or support others, and he’ll gladly point you toward one of his favorite local spots, Garage-East, where a “breakfast wine” might just be his go-to recommendation.

A husband, father, and combat veteran, his life has been shaped by a deep commitment to service, first in uniform and now in the nonprofit space. As Executive Director of Heroes on the Water, he leads programs that support veterans and first responders through therapeutic outdoor experiences nationwide. His path shifted following service-related injuries, ultimately guiding him into advocacy work that spans local, state, and national levels. Gilbert quickly became home, offering the kind of community he and his wife envisioned while raising their family. Grounded in values like hard work, integrity, and personal responsibility, he leads by example, both professionally and at home. Outside of his work, you’ll likely find him enjoying Downtown Gilbert favorites like Sidewinder Subs or Sal’s Gilbert Pizza, or staying involved in causes that support veteran advocacy, conservation, and education.

Chuck Bongiovanni

With more than three decades in Gilbert, his story is one of resilience, growth, and deep community connection. He arrived 33 years ago with a vision, building a small business that has since grown into an international company with over 240 offices. At the same time, he was raising his six-month-old son on his own, driven by the determination to create a better life not just for his family, but for others along the way. His “jumping in” moment came through public service, becoming Vice Mayor and a Town Council member, where he found purpose in connecting with residents and helping guide Gilbert’s growth. Despite the town’s size, he values the small-town relationships that make it feel personal and connected. Known for his belief in listening first and leading with intention, he continues to show up for the community he calls home, often recommending a stop at Liberty Market, a place he considers part of Gilbert’s heart.

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, he moved to Arizona in 2005 to pursue a career in education, eventually finding both purpose and home in Gilbert. For more than a decade, he has served as principal of Gilbert Elementary, where he has led with intention, focusing on building strong relationships, developing student leadership, and creating a culture that feels like family. His passion for education is rooted in making a lasting impact during the early, formative years when confidence and character begin to take shape. Outside of school, his life is centered around family, staying active, and being present in the community. From coaching youth basketball to traveling and exploring Gilbert with his wife, he values connection in every form. He also enjoys working out, hiking, and introducing his kids to golf. Known for his competitive edge, especially during a game of euchre, he brings that same energy into his leadership, showing up consistently and leading by example.

A longtime Gilbert resident, he has spent the past 20 years watching the town grow while staying grounded in the relationships that make it feel like home. A Marine Corps veteran raised by a family of teachers and first responders, service, discipline, and accountability have always shaped how he approaches both life and business. Since 2012, he has built a career in real estate, carving out a niche as an assumption home sale and purchase specialist, known for finding creative, strategic ways to help clients succeed in a competitive market. Outside of work, he’s a proud dad of two teenage boys and deeply invested in the community, from youth sports to local gatherings that bring people together. You’ll often find him around some of his favorite Gilbert spots, from catching a game at Cactus Yards to unwinding at Beer Barn, or grabbing a classic deep dish nearby. He’s also a loyal sports fan, cheering on the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox, always finding ways to stay connected to both community and tradition.

Raised in the Moon Valley neighborhood of Phoenix, he had the Gen X freedom: days spent riding bikes through the desert, long summers at the pool, and a childhood built on independence, resilience, and a little bit of chaos. That foundation carried into his career, leading him to the fire service, where he found both purpose and challenge. In 1999, he joined the Gilbert Fire Department, a decision that quickly felt like home. Surrounded by a team that valued growth and support, he built a career defined by stepping outside his comfort zone and embracing the unknown that comes with every call. Beyond the job, he values gratitude as a daily practice and believes in continuing to move forward in all areas of life. When he’s not working, you’ll likely find him enjoying a date night at Origen followed by a stop at The Blue Heron, a perfect reflection of his appreciation for both community and connection.

With a career rooted in both education and public service, his path has always centered around guiding and protecting others. After spending 16 years as a Health and Physical Education teacher and more than two decades serving as a volunteer firefighter, eventually rising to assistant chief, he brought that same commitment to Gilbert, where he now serves as a police officer and School Resource Officer. His dedication has not gone unnoticed, as Officer Ryan Matheson, SRO at Cooley Middle School, was selected as the Region 7 winner by the National Association of School Resource Officers, representing Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma, for his outstanding service and leadership. Since moving to Gilbert seven years ago, he and his family have embraced the community, often spending weekends exploring Downtown and local favorites like Crust Simply Italian and Snooze, an A.M. Eatery. Whether it’s a morning at the farmers market or time with family around town, his focus remains on connection, presence, and making a lasting impact.

His story is one of resilience, risk, and redefining what’s possible. From a childhood that shaped his understanding of money and survival, to building a career as a financial advisor, his journey has been driven by a desire to create something better not just for himself, but for others. After moving to Gilbert at a young age, he built a life rooted in family, community, and hard work, eventually founding Accrue Wealth Designs alongside his wife, whom he credits as a key source of belief and support. That same mindset shows up in how he approaches life, leaning into challenges, embracing growth, and not shying away from fear. From competitive skateboarding in his younger years to BASE jumping in Moab as part of a documentary on overcoming fear, he continues to push boundaries. In Gilbert, you’ll find him enjoying time in Downtown, whether at O.H.S.O. Brewery or SoCal Fish Tacos, staying connected to the community he’s built his life around.

A baker, educator, and community builder, his work has always been about more than just food; it’s about connection. What began as a passion for baking evolved into a deeper mission, blending education and community through his craft. After starting in his garage in 2009, he built Barrio Bread into a nationally recognized, James Beard Award-winning bakery rooted in the agricultural heritage of the Sonoran Desert. His expansion into Gilbert marked a meaningful return to the Valley, where he continues to grow that vision through new ventures and partnerships. At the heart of it all is a commitment to bringing people together, whether through bread, conversation, or shared experiences around food. He’s especially inspired by places like Agritopia, which reflect the same values of community, sustainability, and local collaboration he strives to build. For him, it’s not just about what’s being made, it’s about what’s being created together.

Rooted in Gilbert, his story is one of growth, passion, and purpose. A local through and through, he grew up here and is now raising his family in the same community that shaped him. Whether it’s playing guitar, surfing, camping, or simply spending time with the people closest to him, his life centers on connection and experiences that matter. His journey into business began with a turning point, choosing sobriety and finding a new outlet through coffee. What started as a personal shift quickly became something bigger, leading to the creation of Hooligans Coffeehouse. Built alongside close friends and supported by his wife from day one, the shop has become more than a business; it’s a community hub rooted in authenticity and shared experiences. Located near Revel Surf, it reflects his love for culture, connection, and bringing people together through music, coffee, and community, creating a space where people feel seen, welcomed, and inspired every single day.

Grill Like a King

Nobody wants to stand in front of a grill when temperatures are soaring, but nothing screams summer more than a perfectly grilled steak. So how do you get the best of both worlds, a perfect steak without melting into the patio? The real work happens hours earlier, in your kitchen, with a five ingredient marinade that soaks in all the flavor while you go about your day. By the time the grill is hot, you're already winning. Ten minutes on the fire, a rest under foil with a pat of garlic herb butter melting into every crust and crevice, and you're done. Big flavor, fast fire, and full-on patio king status. Done and Done.

Grilling a Perfect Steak

Grilling steaks is a simple process that creates a crisp layer on the outside with a tender and juicy inside. Cook your steak to perfection following these simple step-by-step instructions.

• PREPARE GRILL. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Once it’s hot, turn off the heat and quickly clean grates with hot water or half an onion. Then once dry you can oil the grates then turn the flame back on.

• COOK THE STEAK. Place the steak on the grill and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes per side. If you prefer your steak medium to well done, you will likely need to cook it a few more minutes.

• INSERT MEAT THERMOMETER. Beef’s tender, juicy texture is optimum when cooked to medium rare (145°F) to medium (160°F) doneness. To determine doneness, insert a thermometer horizontally into the side of the steaks. Place the thermometer in the thickest part. The thermometer should not touch bone, fat, or the grill.

• LET REST. Once it’s reached the desired temperature, remove it from the grill and tent with foil for 5 minutes. I like to add some garlic herb butter while it rests for additional flavor.

Easy Steak Marinades

This is the best steak marinade that only takes a few ingredients and 5 minutes of prep work. The flavor is absolutely wonderful and creates a juicy and flavorful steak.

INGREDIENTS

• ¼ cup olive oil

• ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

• ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce

• 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

• 1 Tablespoon minced garlic

• Salt and Ground Black Pepper , to taste

VARIATIONS

• CITRUS SWAP. Omit the balsamic and try lime juice or orange juice or lemon juice instead. You could also use a combination.

• LIQUID SMOKE. Just a drop of liquid smoke goes a long way. Add a bit if you like a smoky BBQ flavor.

• FOR A SWEET NOTE. Pour in a bit of canned pineapple juice

• FRESH HERBS: Add some fresh chopped cilantro for another layer of flavor similar to a carne asada marinade.

• MAKE A SAUCE. Once the marinade has made contact with raw meat it is no longer safe to consume. This doesn’t mean you need to throw it out, however. Boil it on the stovetop until it thickens, season as desired, and serve as an extra sauce.

HOW TO MARINATE STEAK

Whisk the ingredients together in a small bowl. Place the steak in a large freezer bag or bowl, then pour the marinade on top and seal the bag/bowl. Let marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, but around 4 hours is ideal. The longer the steaks marinate, the more flavor they will have!

Garlic Herb Butter

INGREDIENTS

• ½ cup unsalted butter , softened

• 2 teaspoons minced garlic

• ½ teaspoon fine sea salt (omit if using salted butter)

• ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1-2 Tablespoons freshly chopped herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, chives, parsley, basil, oregano, tarragon, or sage)

INSTRUCTIONS

• COMBINE INGREDIENTS. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix butter and herbs until nice and fluffy.

• CHILL. Place the butter on a piece of plastic wrap and roll into a log or place in a small mason jar. Chill in the refrigerator at least 1 hour, or until ready to serve. This recipe also can be stored in the freezer.

• SERVE. When ready to serve, let sit on the counter 10 minutes to soften slightly.

HOW GABBY LANE CLASSICS IS KEEPING AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE ALIVE IN ARIZONA

There’s something about a 1931 Ford Model A that stops a man in his tracks. It’s not just the chrome or the curves,  it’s the story sitting beneath the hood. For Shane and Marie Roy, founders of Gabby Lane Classics, that feeling is exactly the point.

“We didn’t start this as a business;  we started it as a love for something real,” says Marie Roy. “These cars have history, craftsmanship, and character that you just can’t manufacture. When someone sees one of our classics, they feel it. That’s what we’re sharing.”

Gabby Lane Classics is an Arizona-based, family-owned vintage car rental company offering a curated fleet of meticulously preserved vehicles spanning from the 1920s through the 1960s,

available for weddings, photoshoots, corporate events, and milestone celebrations. But to call it simply a rental company would be selling it short.

Shane and Marie grew up in families who loved, restored, raced, and showcased classic cars. That inherited passion became the foundation for Gabby Lane Classics, named and built as a tribute to the vehicles and the memories they hold. Every car in their fleet carries its own story, and the Roys take pride in making sure those stories are shared, not just stored in a garage.

“For us, it’s never just about the cars,” Marie explains. “It’s about celebrating moments, honoring heritage, and creating something lasting.”

For men who appreciate automotive history, there’s real value in understanding what separates a preserved classic from a restored one. Here are a few things worth knowing: Preservation over restoration. A preserved vehicle retains its original components, paint, interior, and mechanicals. It’s rarer and often more historically significant than a restored car, which may have been rebuilt with modern parts.

Know the era. Pre-war cars (1930s) were built with hand-crafted precision and minimal standardization. Post-war classics (1950s) reflect the optimism of the era, bold chrome, sweeping lines, and the birth of American car culture. Each period tells a different story.

Details matter. Emblems, upholstery, glass, and even the smell of a classic car are part of the experience. When evaluating a vehicle or booking one for a special occasion, pay attention to what’s original.

Support the keepers. Families and businesses like Gabby Lane Classics are doing the meaningful work of preserving these vehicles and keeping their stories alive. By bringing them into weddings, events, and photo sessions, they continue to be seen, appreciated, and experienced.

Because in the end, these cars aren’t just pieces of history, they’re the kind of detail that elevates a moment and makes photos feel truly unforgettable.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building.
