LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Fresh Start for Feeling Good As we step into a brand-new year, there’s something refreshing about the clean slate January always seems to bring. The pace slows just enough for us to breathe again, reflect on what mattered most last year, and decide how we want to feel moving forward. In our Health & Wellness issue, we’re leaning into that idea of an intentional reset, not the pressure-filled resolutions we abandon by February, but the small, doable shifts that help us feel more grounded, energized, and connected. Personally, I’ve found that the real magic of a new year hides in the quiet, everyday moments. Those early mornings when the world feels a little softer and my warm herbal tea somehow tastes better simply because I’m not rushing. Or how a simple walk outside can completely rearrange my mood, something I’m reminding myself to make time for instead of diving straight into my to-do list. Even Oakley seems to sense the reset; he’s more determined than ever to pull me outdoors for a little fresh winter air. This month, you’ll find inspiration for feeling good from the inside out, nourishing routines, local experts, and stories that remind us wellness isn’t a onesize-fits-all journey. We’re also sharing some incredibly yummy recipes to make healthy eating feel exciting again, along with refreshing drink ideas for anyone looking to take advantage of our winter citrus harvest. Wherever you are in your wellness journey, we hope this issue brings you encouragement, ideas, and a gentle reminder to treat yourself with kindness. Here’s to small shifts, nourishing moments, and a year of feeling your best.

WARMTH MEETS WELLNESS Infrared sauna therapy and red light therapy have become two of the most talked-about wellness tools for people looking to feel better, recover faster, support longevity, and create a more balanced routine. They sound high-tech, but in practice, they’re surprisingly simple, and when you understand how they work, it becomes clear why so many people use them as weekly anchors for their physical and mental health. As Chandler Hedrt, owner of Perspire Sauna Studio, puts it, “Infrared allows people to receive deep, therapeutic heat without feeling overwhelmed, comfort creates consistency, and consistency creates results.” One of the biggest misconceptions is that all saunas are the same. Traditional saunas heat the air, often reaching temperatures of 170–200°F. For many people, that intensity is too overwhelming to stay in long enough to

INSIDE THE THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS OF INFRARED HEAT AND RED LIGHT THERAPY FOR BETTER SLEEP, RECOVERY, AND RESILIENCE

see real benefits. Infrared saunas work differently. They use near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths that warm your body directly rather than superheating the air. The result is a gentler, more comfortable session at lower temperatures, allowing you to stay longer while getting deeper tissue warming. This matters because sauna sessions mimic aspects of light-to-moderate cardio: heart rate increases, circulation improves, and your body activates cardiovascular pathways associated with lower risks of heart disease, stroke, dementia, and overall mortality. A helpful tip for new sauna users is to breathe slowly and settle into the first 10 minutes, rather than expecting instant heat. Infrared warmth builds gradually, helping muscles loosen, joints relax, and the nervous system shift to a calmer state. Hydration also matters; drinking water before and after sessions helps optimize circulation and comfort. Another practical tip: start with 25-30 minute sessions and gradually increase your time as your body adapts. Most guests find a rhythm of 2-4 sessions per week to be the sweet spot for consistent benefits. While infrared heat works on the whole body system, red light therapy focuses on your cells, the place where energy, repair, and resilience begin. Red and near-infrared light penetrate just

below the surface, where they are absorbed by mitochondria, the “power plants” of your cells. This triggers photobiomodulation, a process that boosts ATP (cellular energy), regulates nitric oxide for improved blood flow, and reduces oxidative stress and inflammation. In simple terms, it helps cells work better, recover faster, and repair more efficiently. For anyone curious about adding red light to their wellness routine, there are easy ways to maximize results. Go in with clean skin, no heavy lotions or barriers, so light can reach cells effectively. Consistency matters more than intensity, so aim for several short exposures per week rather than occasional long sessions. And because red light therapy supports collagen production and reduces inflammation, people often notice improvements in skin texture, joint comfort, and post-workout recovery after a few weeks. Where things get especially powerful is when infrared heat and red light therapy are used together. Infrared raises core temperature, increases circulation, and opens blood vessels. Red light provides a cellular-level “nudge” toward repair. Heat drives oxygen and nutrients into tissues more efficiently, and red light tells those tissues to recover more effectively. “You get the sweat, the cardiovascular stimulus, and the deep relaxation, alongside cellular support that boosts energy and repair,” Hedrt explains. It’s not about multitasking; it’s about amplifying each therapy by pairing it with the other. Clients often describe the benefits in everyday language that reflects how the body responds on a deeper level. “My joints feel looser.” “My skin looks brighter.” “My sleep has improved.” “I’m less sore after workouts.” These real-life results reflect what research shows: regular heat exposure supports cardiovascular and metabolic health, while red light therapy reduces inflammation and accelerates cell repair. Mentally, the quiet warmth of a session helps people disconnect from stress, slow their breathing, and enter a calmer, more grounded state, one reason sauna use is associated with improved mood and better sleep. If you’re looking to get the most out of infrared and red light therapy, several simple strategies help shape a sustainable routine. First, schedule sessions consistently, the same way you might schedule workouts. Habit is where the benefits compound. Second, pair sessions with intentional recovery rituals, electrolytes, stretching, or reflection, because your body is in a receptive state. Third, wear minimal clothing so both the heat and the light can reach your skin effectively. Many people also turn sessions into a mental reset by listening to calming music, guided meditations, or simply unplugging from screens. Another tip: don’t chase extreme heat. It’s a myth that the hotter you feel, the more effective the session. Infrared works through wavelength penetration, not air temperature, and red light works through cellular signaling, not discomfort. “More is not automatically better, what matters is manageable, consistent exposure,” Hedrt says. Sustainable wellness routines work because they feel good, not because they push your limits.

12

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

For those who live in Arizona, there’s also a common idea that saunas aren’t necessary in a warm climate. In reality, outdoor heat does not replicate the cardiovascular or cellular benefits of infrared sauna use. The structured rise in core temperature, improved circulation, and controlled sweating environment are what create the therapeutic effects. In fact, some people who struggle with Arizona summers find that consistent infrared sauna sessions actually help the body acclimate more comfortably to hot conditions. Red light therapy offers its own myth-busting moment. Many people assume it’s only useful for beauty or skin improvements because those results are easiest to see. But research shows remarkable benefits for joint comfort, inflammation reduction, and muscle recovery, effects people often feel before they ever notice changes in appearance. And because red light influences both energy production and nitric oxide signaling, people commonly report better stamina and more stable daily energy.

When it comes to building a long-term wellness routine, combining infrared and red light therapy offers a powerful, approachable option that fits into busy lives. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s repetition. A few sessions each week can create compounding benefits that support heart health, skin clarity, recovery, sleep, mental wellbeing, and overall resilience. At the end of the day, finding a studio that makes the experience enjoyable matters just as much as the science. Perspire Sauna Studio offers private infrared sauna suites with integrated red light therapy, allowing guests to relax, recover, and recharge in a comfortable, personalized environment. To learn more, book a session, or explore membership options, visit perspiresaunastudio.com or contact your nearest location to get started. “EVERY ROUND CHALLENGES THE MIND AND BODY, OFFERING STRESS RELIEF, STRENGTH BUILDING, AND NONSTOP MOTIVATION IN A SINGLE ENERGIZING WORKOUT.”

Boxing continues to stand out as one of the most complete and efficient workouts available, blending endurance, power, coordination, and mental focus into every round. Unlike traditional cardio machines or isolated strength routines, boxing challenges the entire body while keeping the mind fully engaged. As one member put it, “Boxing feels like everything my body needs, all in one session.” A significant reason boxing is so effective is that every punch activates multiple muscle groups: legs, glutes, core, shoulders, and back, and sends the heart rate into higher zones. Instead of separating cardio and strength days, boxing naturally merges both, allowing participants to build muscle, burn calories, and increase power faster than with many standard routines. Its pace creates a built-in HIIT effect: short bursts of explosive effort followed by quick recovery windows. As one participant shared, “My heart rate stays up without me ever touching a treadmill.” These intensity shifts are incredibly beneficial for cardiovascular health. While steady-state machine-based cardio keeps the body in one heart-rate zone, boxing pushes it to adapt through constant variation. This improves stamina, strengthens the heart, and

increases post-workout calorie burn, one of the biggest reasons people notice quick conditioning changes after just a few classes. Beyond the physical benefits, boxing offers something many traditional gym settings don’t: a powerful mental and emotional release. It provides a direct outlet for frustration, stress, and anxiety, helping people move through heavy days with clarity and confidence. One regular described it perfectly: “It’s therapy with gloves on.” The act of learning combinations, connecting with the bag, and staying present delivers a mental reset that lasts long after class ends. Boxing is also a surprisingly effective core workout, even without traditional ab exercises. Every punch requires rotation, stabilization, and power transfer from the midsection, firing the core continuously. Instead of isolating muscles with crunches or sit-ups, boxing strengthens the core dynamically, the way it naturally works in real life. For beginners, the most common mistake is punching with just the arms. True power comes from rotating through the hips and shoulders, using the entire body to drive each strike. Once new boxers understand this, technique improves quickly, punches CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / G I L BE RT

feel smoother, and the workout becomes more efficient. Coaches cue these fundamentals constantly so participants build strong habits early. Motivation is another area where boxing shines. People who struggle with repetitive gym routines often find boxing refreshingly engaging. The mental challenge of learning combos, staying on rhythm, and pushing through intervals keeps boredom at bay. The workout moves fast because the brain stays as active as the body. That’s where Rumble Boxing’s signature 10-round format comes in. Each round lasts just a few minutes, long enough to push hard but short enough to stay mentally locked in. The constant transitions make the workout feel structured, energizing, and surprisingly manageable, even for beginners. The Rumble experience sets itself apart by combining technique-driven coaching with an immersive, high-energy environment. The bagsand-bench setup delivers a full-body workout that feels empowering rather than intimidating, and many first-timers are surprised by how quickly they settle into the flow. Perfection isn’t expected, progress is. As many members like to say, “You don’t have to be a boxer to train like one.” Rumble Boxing’s studio is located in the heart of downtown Gilbert and welcomes beginners and seasoned athletes alike. For schedules, updates, and community highlights, visit their website (www.rumbleboxinggym.com) or follow them on social media (@rumbleboxinggilbert) to get a feel for the experience before stepping into class.

Macdonald Orthodontics - Helping to make Everyone Smile ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE LEVINE PHOTOGRAPHY

In the heart of the Valley, Macdonald Orthodontics has built a legacy rooted in family, community, and passion for creating confident, radiant smiles. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Edwin Macdonald, the practice has remained privately owned and operated, something Dr. Robert Macdonald says is increasingly rare in today’s corporate-driven world. And that independence matters.” The larger corporate practices do not give the kindness, nor the individual care that is given by our private practice,” says Dr. Macdonald. “We pride ourselves in creating a caring environment.” That warmth can be found in everything they do. The mission of Macdonald Orthodontics is simple but deeply felt-to offer the highest quality orthodontics while maintaining a fun, caring atmosphere. It’s a philosophy that extends far beyond the office. Office Manager, Tami Parnell, explains that their love for the Gilbert community is rooted in personal connections. “We have the pleasure of spending time with many kind families that become more than just patients; they are our friends,” she says. The practice is also involved in local schools, promoting oral hygiene and supporting PTO programs with both time and resources. “Besides creating beautiful smiles, we really get to know our community.” While orthodontics has long been associated with children and teens, the patient landscape is changing. Today, adults make up nearly 30% of orthodontic patients, and Dr. Macdonald sees clear reasons behind the trend. “Adults need straight teeth for their oral CONTINUED >

health and self-confidence, just as much as any other age group,” he says. For some, braces were not financially accessible when they were kids; others find that teeth can shift later in life, even after previous orthodontic treatment. And in many cases, misalignment begins in adulthood. Whatever the reason, the effects can extend well beyond aesthetics. “If your teeth are misaligned, dentists have found that you could develop chewing problems, gum disease, tooth decay, and unnecessary tooth wear,” he says. Meanwhile, a lot of adults are motivated by more personal causes, such as wanting to feel confident during a key life occasion, or simply enjoy loving their smile again.” A beautiful new smile can be a huge confidence booster. For those leery of the appearance of traditional braces, Macdonald Orthodontics sees a growing trend in Invisalign for adults. “Many adults choose Invisalign because it offers a modern, virtually invisible solution that allows adults to achieve beautifully aligned teeth without disrupting their professional and social lives,” says Dr. Macdonald. The aligners are designed with adult lifestyles in mind, providing treatment that fits into daily routines. For anyone considering orthodontic treatment, Parnell has simple advice: “Don’t wait, just do it! The benefits of a

straight smile affect your lifetime. Your smile is the first thing people see.” She emphasizes that treatment is more accessible than many realize. “We offer ‘creative’ financing,” she says. The practice accepts several forms of payment including most insurance plans, and the staff are happy to assist with claims. “We don’t want cost to stand in your way of an amazing smile!” That supportive approach continues from the first consultation onward. “Getting started is easy,” Parnell says. “Choosing to get orthodontic care is a big decision, and we respect your reasons for wanting to improve the way you look and feel.” The practice uses the latest orthodontic technology, making treatment less invasive, reducing time in the chair, and often shortening overall treatment time. “We pride ourselves on the excellence of our staff and the results we deliver.” Even as the orthodontic world becomes increasingly corporate, Macdonald Orthodontics shares its commitment to personal connection and individualized care that comes from being a family legacy. “We are very proud to say that we plan to stay privately owned,” Dr. Macdonald says. Today, Macdonald Orthodontics proudly serves the Valley across three locations, continuing the tradition of exceptional, dedicated care began over 50 years ago, one beautiful smile at a time.

Spring Gardening in Gilbert Simple Steps to Get Growing Spring in the desert comes on fast. With a little planning, your Gilbert garden can be full of herbs, flowers, and vegetables before the heat sets in.

REFRESH YOUR GARDEN SPACE

Before you think about what to plant, prepare where you will plant it. Pull winter weeds, remove old plants, and clean up beds and paths. Add a fresh layer of compost or raised bed mix to refill beds. Desert soils lose organic matter quickly, so this step makes a big difference in how well plants grow.

Next, check your watering system. Turn everything on and look for clogged emitters, leaks, or dry spots. Make needed adjustments or repairs before the season begins. If you’re hand watering, make a plan for when you will water once the days warm up so new plants don’t dry out.

MAKE A SIMPLE PLANTING PLAN

A successful spring garden in Gilbert doesn’t need to be big or complicated. Start by asking a few questions. What do you like to eat? Which crops are worth the space

24

O UT D OOR LIV IN G | LO CA L SE RVICE S

and water? How much time do you want to spend in the garden each week? Use my planting guides and choose a handful of warm-season crops you’re excited about, like tomatoes, peppers, basil, cucumbers, or squash. Give each crop a specific spot. Group taller plants so they don’t shade smaller ones and leave room for a trellis or cage where needed. Don’t forget flowers and herbs. Plants like zinnias, marigolds, and basil attract pollinators, support the garden ecosystem, and make your space more beautiful.

GATHER SUPPLIES AND START SEEDLINGS

Spring planting is usually a mix of transplants and seeds. Pick up a few tomato and pepper transplants from a local nursery, then direct sow easy seeds like beans, cucumbers, and squash into prepared beds. If you start your own transplants indoors, plant seeds 6 to 8 weeks before planting outside so the seedlings are ready. Take stock of what you have and then gather the rest. Good soil, quality seeds, mulch, and a simple way to water are the must-have basics.

WATCH THE WEATHER AND START PLANTING

In the East Valley, our last frost usually arrives in mid-February, but it can vary from year to year. Pay attention to the forecast so you know when to plant. Warmseason crops grow best once nights stay in the 40s or above and the soil has warmed. Begin by planting spring crops into spaces that open up as you harvest winter vegetables. You can also give surviving peppers or tomatoes a second life by pruning frost damage once the chance of a freeze has passed, then feeding them with compost and worm castings. Spring moves quickly in the desert, but small steps now will set you up for delicious harvests. New to desert gardening? Start with healthy soil, a simple plan, and a few plants you love, and you’ll be harvesting soon. Angela Judd is an East Valley-based gardener, author, and educator behind Growing in the Garden. Through her blog, YouTube channel, planting guides, and online classes, she teaches simple, practical strategies for growing vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit in the low desert. CONTINUED >

There’s something powerful about starting fresh and not with impossible resolutions, but with intentional choices that actually make you feel better. For many of my clients here in Gilbert, that choice begins the moment they discover how IV nutrition therapy can transform their energy, immunity, and overall wellness in ways they never expected. As owner of IV Nutrition in Gilbert, I’ve built my practice around a simple truth: your body knows what it needs, sometimes it just needs help getting there faster. IV therapy delivers essential vitamins, minerals, and hydration directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for maximum absorption and immediate impact. We offer specialized formulations and ingredient stacks tailored to your specific wellness goals. My approach is refreshingly personal. I take time to understand each client’s unique wellness goals and create customized treatment plans that fit seamlessly into even the busiest lifestyles.

Three Ways IV Therapy Supports Wellness:

Hydration Boost – Arizona’s dry climate and packed schedules leave us chronically dehydrated. IV therapy rehydrates you faster and more effectively than drinking water alone, helping you feel revitalized within minutes. Immune Support – Whether you’re fighting seasonal bugs or strengthening your defenses, vitamin-packed infusions give your immune system targeted, powerful support when you need it most. Energy & Recovery – Sluggish mornings or post-workout fatigue don’t stand a chance. IV therapy delivers nutrients that restore energy, reduce inflammation, and accelerate recovery so you can get back to feeling like yourself. Sometimes the most powerful reset is simply giving your body exactly what it needs to thrive.

SOR RY NOT SOR RY: W I N T E R H A RV E ST

Our winter gear? Garden gloves and shovels. Gilbert’s winter harvest brings fresh vegetables and vibrant recipes.

While the rest of America is wrestling with snow shovels and defrosting car windows, we’re here in Gilbert with our garden shovels, digging in the dirt like it’s spring. Their winter gear? Parkas and ice scrapers. Our winter gear? Sun hats and garden gloves. We’re not bragging, but... okay, we’re totally bragging. January is when our gardens absolutely explode with winter vegetables. Whether you’re the one with dirt under your fingernails or you’re hitting up our

farmer’s markets every weekend, this is Gilbert’s moment to show off. Here’s the thing: all these winter veggies - artichokes, turnips, carrots, mushrooms, leafy greens, parsnips, radishes - are secretly doing incredible things for your body. Better heart health, lower inflammation, happier gut, more energy. No need to swear off anything. Just eat more of what’s growing right now, and let it work its magic. Speaking of which, let’s get cooking.

ROASTE D WINTE R HARVEST BOWL

ARTICHOKE & WINTER G R E E N P A S TA

This is what you make when your garden (or farmer’s market haul) is overflowing and you want everything to taste like it came from a fancy restaurant.

The secret to this ridiculously creamy sauce? Pasta water. That starchy magic creates silk without a single drop of heavy cream.

Ingredients:

• • • • • • • • • • •

• • • • • • • • • • • •

3 medium carrots, chopped into chunks 2 parsnips, peeled and sliced 1 large turnip, cubed 8 oz mushrooms, halved 6 radishes, halved 1 artichoke, quartered 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Salt and pepper to taste Fresh lemon wedges

Directions:

Crank your oven to 425°F. We are going hot and fast. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper because scrubbing pans is not the vibe. Toss all those gorgeous winter vegetables with olive oil, garlic, rosemary, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Use your hands - it’s the best way to coat everything evenly, plus it’s oddly satisfying. Spread everything on your baking sheet in a single layer. Don’t crowd them or they’ll steam instead of getting those crispy, caramelized edges we’re after. Roast for 30-35 minutes, stirring halfway through. You’ll know they’re done when the edges are golden brown and your kitchen smells so good your neighbors might text you. The natural sugars in winter root vegetables intensify during roasting, creating this sweet, earthy flavor that’s borderline addictive. Squeeze fresh lemon over everything right before serving. This works as a main dish, tossed with quinoa, piled on hummus, or honestly just eaten straight from the pan while standing at the counter. We don’t judge.

Ingredients:

12 oz pasta (whole wheat penne is perfect here) 2 cups artichoke hearts, quartered 2 cups mushrooms, sliced thick 3 cups winter greens (kale, chard, or spinach), chopped 5 garlic cloves, minced ½ cup pasta cooking water 3 tablespoons olive oil Juice of 1 lemon ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes ¼ cup nutritional yeast Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Get your pasta water boiling and salt it well - this becomes your sauce, so make it tasty. Cook pasta according to package directions, but before draining, scoop out at least 1 cup of that starchy water. This is liquid gold. While pasta cooks, heat olive oil in your largest skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and resist the urge to stir for 3-4 minutes - this helps them get beautifully golden. Add garlic and artichokes, cooking another 2-3 minutes until fragrant and gorgeous. Toss in chopped greens and that reserved pasta water. The greens will wilt down in about 3 minutes. Add drained pasta, lemon juice, red pepper flakes, and nutritional yeast directly to the skillet. Toss everything together, adding more pasta water if needed to create that silky sauce. The nutritional yeast delivers umami, almost-cheesy flavor without any dairy. Sounds weird, tastes amazing. This is the pasta that makes people forget they’re eating vegetables.

CR AFTED FROM FLA M E The unexpected journey of turning slow-smoked tallow into simple, powerful, nutrient-rich skincare essentials.

Caldwell County BBQ’s expansion into skincare began with the same philosophy that shaped their barbecue from the beginning: use every part of what they cook and operate with intention. As the business grew, co-owner Travis Taylor noticed how much premium beef tallow their briskets produced. Instead of letting that nutrient-rich ingredient go to waste, he began experimenting with traditional tallow balms. With the help of Jose Morales, an employee who shared a passion for natural ingredients and hands-on craftsmanship, those early experiments became the foundation of Caldwell Cosmetics.

For those unfamiliar with tallow, it remains one of the most naturally compatible moisturizers available. Packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K, and essential fatty acids that mirror the skin’s own structure, tallow absorbs easily, supports the skin barrier, and nourishes deeply without synthetic fillers. Each product is handcrafted in small batches, rendered, blended, and poured by hand to maintain purity, consistency, and a level of craftsmanship that mirrors the care behind their barbecue.

CLE AN SKINCARE:

Caldwell Cosmetics

Sustainability plays a central role as well. By repurposing brisket trimmings from their kitchens, they reduce waste, honor the whole animal, and transform a traditional ingredient into something both modern and meaningful. Their scent profiles are intentionally simple, clean, approachable, and made with essential oils, ensuring each balm, lotion, or whipped blend is something they’d proudly use themselves. As more shoppers seek clean, non-toxic skincare, Caldwell Cosmetics encourages starting with the basics: short ingredient lists, real components, and formulas that rely on nutrient density rather than complexity. Even their tallow candles reflect this approach, slow burning, clean, and nostalgic, offering a natural alternative to paraffin blends. Looking forward, they envision Caldwell Cosmetics as an extension of the hospitality their guests already love, with future ideas including seasonal scents, beard products, lip gloss, and expanded lotion lines, all crafted with the same intentionality that defines their brand.

OH DEAR!It was a RUN-BY FRUITING ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY

This is the cocktail that stops conversations. Tart grapefruit meets sweet pomegranate in the most beautiful winter marriage you've ever tasted.

W int e r Cit r u s Pom egran at e Spark l e r

INGREDIENTS:

38

• 1½ oz fresh grapefruit juice • 1 oz pomegranate juice • 2 tablespoons fresh pomegranate arils • 1½ oz vodka or gin • ½ oz honey syrup

(equal parts honey and warm water, mixed) • 3 oz sparkling water • Ice • Grapefruit slice and pomegranate arils for garnish

MOCKTAIL HACK: Skip the vodka and add an extra ½ oz each of grapefruit and pomegranate juice, plus a splash of non-alcoholic aperitif or a couple dashes of Angostura bitters for depth. Still Instagram-worthy, still delicious.

A nony mous citr us and pomegranate deliveries hit porches across Gilber t . These drinks might lure your myster y fr uit donor out of hiding.

H AP PY H OU R | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

You know you live in Gilbert when mysterious baskets of citrus and pomegranates just appear on your porch. No note, no name, just 25 pounds of fresh fruit waiting for you like some sort of produce ambush. If Mrs. Doubtfire taught us anything, it’s that sometimes fruit becomes a weapon of misdirection - and right now, your neighbors are channeling that energy. Oh dear, it was a run-by fruiting, and you’re the lucky recipient. It’s actually kind of sweet when you think about it. They’re combining a little mischievousness with genuine abundance-sharing. Sure, their branches are buckling and their counters look like a farmer’s market exploded, but they’re thinking of you. When the food pantries hit their citrus capacity, our lovely neighbors resort to covert fruit operations. They’re equal parts generosity and self-preservation. Consider yourself blessed and fruitified. When you’re dealing with grapefruit and pomegranates picked fresh from Gilbert trees, it actually tastes incredible. Your neighbors aren’t wrong for sharing - they’re just overwhelmed by abundance. The trees don’t stop producing just because we’ve all hit our citrus limit. So what do you do with this avalanche of fresh fruit? You make drinks so yummy that people will actually volunteer to come rehome some of the updated versions.

DIRECTIONS: In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle half the pomegranate arils to release their jewel-toned juice. Add grapefruit juice, pomegranate juice, vodka or gin, honey syrup, and a generous handful of ice. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the shaker is frosty cold and everything is perfectly combined. Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top with sparkling water and give it a gentle stir. Garnish with a grapefruit slice on the rim and scatter the remaining pomegranate arils on top like the gems they are. The citrusy bite of fresh grapefruit balances the sweet-tart pomegranate perfectly, and that pop of honey brings everything together. This is what winter in Arizona tastes like in a glass.

Grapef r uit Pom egran at e Mul e A twist on the classic Moscow Mule that showcases both of Arizona’s winter fruit superstars. The ginger beer ties it all together brilliantly.

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • •

1 oz fresh grapefruit juice 1 oz pomegranate juice ¼ cup fresh pomegranate arils 2 oz vodka ¾ oz fresh lime juice ½ oz simple syrup 3 oz ginger beer Ice Grapefruit wheel, lime wheel, and pomegranate arils for garnish Fresh mint sprig (optional)

DIRECTIONS: In your cocktail shaker, muddle about half the pomegranate arils to release their juice. This step creates layers of flavor you can’t get from juice alone. Add grapefruit juice, pomegranate juice, vodka, lime juice, simple syrup, and ice. Shake hard for 15-20 seconds. Double strain into a copper mug or highball glass filled with fresh ice (double straining keeps the drink smooth while capturing all that gorgeous flavor). Top with ginger beer and stir gently. Garnish with grapefruit and lime wheels, scatter remaining pomegranate arils on top, and add a mint sprig if you’re feeling fancy. The spicy ginger beer plays beautifully with the tart citrus and sweet pomegranate. It’s complex, it’s refreshing, and it tastes like you went to bartending school. But nope, just you making the absolute best of your run-by fruiting situation.

MOCKTAIL HACK: Replace vodka with 2 oz of chilled white tea or sparkling water. The tea adds subtle tannins that give the drink body, or extra sparkle keeps it light and bright. Either way, it’s a winner.
