As we step into a new year, January’s health and wellness issue feels especially inspiring. This month, we’re excited to spotlight incredible stories and fresh ideas to help you prioritize your well-being in 2025. We had the privilege of sitting down with Brooke McGregor of Kaleidoscope Juice who shares how her passion for health and vitality is creating a ripple effect in our community. Barry Wilcox’s journey with Team USA in para-cycling is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of turning challenges into triumphs. We also had the opportunity to learn how OHM Fitness is changing the way we think about exercise with innovative approaches. If the kitchen is your happy place, our featured mocktail recipe offers a refreshing twist for your next gathering. Prefer to focus on mindfulness? We’re also exploring how phone-based therapy can be a lifeline for mental health, providing connection and support at your fingertips. Personally, I’ve been reflecting on the joy of small steps. Whether it’s taking a walk through the neighborhood or hiking one of our gorgeous local trails, I’ve learned that even the smallest efforts toward health can lead to meaningful change. It’s about progress, not perfection. A little each day truly does add up. As you embark on your own health journey this year, remember to celebrate those small wins. Maybe it’s trying a new recipe, joining a fitness class, or simply carving out time for self-care. Whatever it is, we’re here to inspire and cheer you on every step of the way. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and fulfilling start to your 2025!

HOW A LOCAL ATHLETE REDEFINED RESILIENCE AND FOUND GLOBAL SUCCESS THROUGH PARA-CYCLING. ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER

Barry Wilcox's story is one of resilience, determination, and a triumphant return to his first love: cycling. Starting at just 13 years old, Barry discovered a passion for racing that quickly defined his teenage years. By the time he was 15, he had already achieved what many athletes only dream of—three national championships in the time trial and pursuit events. He was also a proud member of the United States Junior National Cycling Team, representing his country with immense pride. His path seemed clear, with a decade of plans laid out for a promising future in cycling. But life, as it often does, threw a curveball. A car accident changed everything. Barry sustained a spinal cord injury, resulting in quadriplegia. In an instant, the world he knew and the plans he had crafted were no longer possible. Cycling, which had been the center of his universe, was no longer the priority. Instead, Barry turned his focus to regaining physical independence, finishing high school, earning a college degree, and building a career. His determination to stay active remained unwavering. “I had to shift my priorities completely,” Barry reflects. “Cycling was everything to me, but after my injury, I had to focus on rebuilding my life, not just my athletic career.” Barry embraced new activities to match his abilities, including hand biking, wheelchair rugby, and weightlifting. While he enjoyed occasional rides on his hand bike, the competitive racing he once thrived on seemed out of reach. Without a fair category to compete in, racing didn’t feel worth pursuing. “There wasn’t a category that matched my ability,” Barry explains. “It was frustrating to be compared to athletes with significantly more function than me.” In 2015, a chance encounter with a news article about a hand bike race in Europe changed everything. The article mentioned the creation of a racing category designed for athletes with similar levels of ability, and Barry’s competitive spirit reignited. CONTINUED >

“This was HUGE!” Barry recalls. “I took all of three seconds to decide to jump right in. This was an opportunity to reach goals in para-cycling that I lost out on in able-bodied cycling.” With renewed purpose, Barry began competing again, now as a member of Team USA in para-cycling. He has since traveled to six countries, competing nationally and internationally in the sport he loves. His proudest moment came in 2023 at the World Cycling Championships in Scotland, where he earned a bronze medal. “One of my dreams as a teenager was to compete at the world championships,” he shares. “Well, I was able to make that happen.” In 2019, Barry moved to Gilbert, Arizona, to teach at Park University and be closer to family. The East Valley’s canal system and Tucson’s renowned trails provide excellent environments for training, combined with the state’s favorable weather. “Being in Arizona has been a game-changer for my training,” Barry says. “It’s the perfect place to prepare for the challenges ahead.” Barry’s commitment to excellence goes beyond cycling. His journey highlights the importance of setting goals and maintaining the drive to see them through, no matter the challenges. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire others to find their passions and pursue them, even when the path isn’t straightforward.

16

AT H LE T E LIF E | L I FE + C U LT U RE

Through it all, Barry remains deeply connected to the values that have carried him through his journey: resilience, adaptability, and a relentless drive to achieve his goals. His story serves as a beacon of inspiration, not just for athletes, but for anyone facing life-altering challenges. “Cycling was my life as a teen, but after my injury, I had to shift my priorities,” he reflects. “It took years, but finding my way back to racing has been incredibly rewarding.” Barry’s achievements are more than personal victories—they are a testament to perseverance and the power of rediscovery. His ability to overcome obstacles and reclaim his passion for cycling demonstrates that even when life takes an unexpected turn, new paths to success and fulfillment can be found. “It’s about setting goals, adapting, and pursuing what makes you feel alive,” Barry says. “For me, that’s cycling.” As Barry continues to train and compete, his legacy grows, reminding us all that dreams don’t have to end—they can evolve. His relentless spirit exemplifies the idea that setbacks can become stepping stones and that passions can be rediscovered in ways more meaningful than ever imagined. Whether he’s training under Arizona’s sunny skies or representing Team USA on the world stage, Barry’s story continues to inspire.

FOR THE LOVE OF TRAILS

Taking Your Passion for Fitness to Nature

The weather outside right now is perfect for taking your fitness routine outdoors. Trail running is a great form of fitness and exercise, but valley Podiatrist Craig Foster understands and knows a thing or two about helping his patients stay healthy while out on the trails, as an avid trail runner himself. Foster, who grew up in the small town of Beaver, Utah, was no stranger to the mountains and spending time on the trails. “I have enjoyed many different ways to exercise,” says Foster. “However, trail running has always been a staple in my fitness routine.” For Foster, there are two main reasons he enjoys time out on the trails. “One, the run is more challenging in navigating uneven terrain on hills and slopes, and I like the difficulty and focus that it requires. And two, the ever-changing terrain seems to make the runs go by faster compared to miles on a paved trail or road.”

18

O FF R OA D | S P O RTS + RE CRE AT ION

As a Podiatrist, Foster also knows that there has to be a certain level of focus and care taken when it comes to trail running. But it doesn’t have to be challenging to get started either. “The barrier to entry to the beginning of trail running is very minimum,” shares Foster. “All you need is a good pair of trail running shoes, but make sure you get the right pair, and a hydration pack. That’s it. You do not need to go to some cramped gym and figure out how to use machines or weights and wait your turn to use these things. You can just get out there on the trail and run at whatever

pace you want to enjoy the fresh air and the solitude all while getting a great workout.” Personally, Foster believes that trail running has helped reduce the level of injury he sustained when running on flatter surfaces exclusively. “I have a history of severe ankle sprains and an ankle fracture. I noticed that as I started to trail run the stability in my ankles seemed to improve dramatically. This is just my own personal experience, but since I have picked up trail running as a hobby, I have had no ankle pain and no instability in both of my ankles.” CONTINUED >

19

One of the coolest things Foster shares he’s done in terms of trail running events was the trail marathon in Moab, Utah, which he completed back in 2018. However, here in the valley, he adds there are also some very cool events including the Xterra trail running event, which offers a great opportunity to compete at any level.

"I HAVE ENJOYED MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO EXERCISE. HOWEVER, TRAIL RUNNING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STAPLE IN MY FITNESS ROUTINE."

20

O FF R OA D | S P O RTS + RE CRE AT ION

Foster often shares his “why” when it comes to trail running, saying it is easy to get lost in the picturesque scenery that can take you away from many of the stresses of life. “Paint a picture of the ideal trail run- I love the early morning desert runs where it’s still dark in the early morning hours the stars are out and you need a headlamp and a jacket for the first couple of miles. The sun starts to come up the gloves and jacket comes off and you get to enjoy a nice sunrise. The desert warms up with you as you finish your run.” Foster says if you are hesitant to start a trail running program, speak with a medical professional about the pros and cons of getting out on the trails. Make sure you get your feet checked properly and get into a running store that can fit you for the appropriate trail running shoes for your specific foot type.

Unlocking the Power O F P H O N E- B A S E D T H E R A P Y As we step into a new year, prioritizing mental health remains a vital goal for many. Phone-based therapy has become a cornerstone of accessible care, breaking barriers and allowing individuals to connect with therapists from virtually anywhere. Unity Mental Health and Wellness understands the unique advantages of this format and shares valuable insights to help persons seeking support get the most out of each session.

The Importance of Setting the Scene Creating a space that feels safe and distraction-free can transform the therapy experience. While the flexibility of phone-based therapy is a huge benefit, Unity Mental Health and Wellness emphasizes the importance of setting up a calm environment. Choose a quiet spot where interruptions are unlikely—this could be a dedicated corner in your home or even a serene outdoor space. Turn off phone notifications, grab a comforting beverage, and consider having a notepad handy. These simple steps help signal to your mind that it’s time to focus on yourself and your well-being.

Preparing with Purpose Preparation is an often-overlooked but incredibly impactful step in the therapeutic process. Before each session, take a moment to reflect on your week.

Create a supportive environment, prepare with purpose, and embrace open communication to enhance your therapy journey. ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER

What challenges have you faced? What wins have you celebrated? Unity Mental Health and Wellness encourages indivuals to jot down thoughts, questions, or concerns that they’d like to address. Having a roadmap for the session not only ensures that you make the best use of your time but also fosters self-awareness and personal growth.

Open Communication is Key Unlike face-to-face therapy, phonebased sessions rely entirely on verbal cues. Unity Mental Health and Wellness highlights the importance of clear and open communication. Share your thoughts and feelings honestly—even the ones that feel difficult to talk about. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification if something isn’t clear. This transparency helps build a stronger relationship with your therapist and ensures that your sessions are tailored to your specific needs. January is a time for new beginnings, and there’s no better way to start the year than by investing in your mental well-being. Phone-based therapy offers a flexible, effective solution for navigating life’s challenges. By creating a supportive environment, preparing thoughtfully, and practicing open communication, you can unlock the full potential of this modern approach to care. Unity Mental Health and Wellness is committed to walking alongside individuals seeking support on their journey toward mental wellness. Therapy isn’t just about addressing problems; it’s about building resilience, gaining self-awareness, and finding balance. With these strategies, you can step into the new year feeling empowered and ready to thrive.

How Brooke McGregor is Bringing Health & Nutrition to the Valley ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY YASMINE CARMEN PHOTOGRAPHY

The new year is here, and for many, that means focusing on getting healthy—not only through fitness but also nutrition. It’s a great time to support local businesses like Kaleidoscope Juice. Owned and operated by Brooke McGregor, a Valley resident, Kaleidoscope Juice is a health-focused juice and smoothie bar offering nutrient-dense, organic food and beverages. For McGregor, it’s a true labor of love. “From the beginning, I’ve been inspired by Kaleidoscope’s mission to provide high-quality ingredients with little barrier to access. Initially, it was about offering a trustworthy, quick, and nutritious meal option. Over time, it has evolved into a space of true healing and wellness, where every product is thoughtfully crafted to support specific health needs.” McGregor has always been passionate about health, holding an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University in Nutrition Dietetics. After graduation, she began studying naturopathic medicine while working at Kaleidoscope. “I started as a smoothie barista girl, but the creativity and commitment to healing deeply inspired me to leave CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . my medical school program and dive further into food science.” Her passion for health, coupled with her personal journey, led her to pursue a Master’s in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine, followed by a Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition. As a wife and mother, McGregor has always placed a strong emphasis on healthy nutrition and public education. “After joining Kaleidoscope, I began helping to develop the menu, refining ingredient lists, and guiding the brand’s evolution.” In 2018, McGregor became a partner and COO. By 2020, she was promoted to CEO and navigated the business through the pandemic. In 2021, she purchased the company from its original founder, Alexandra Hollenbeck.

Kaleidoscope Juice began with a single 500-square-foot location in Old Town Scottsdale, now serving as a commissary for cold-pressed juices and gluten-free baked goods. “What began as one small shop has grown into an eight-location concept across the valley,” says McGregor. Their most recent location will open in Phoenix’s Arcadia Improvement Club in Summer 2024. “Our journey is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and a commitment to wellness.” McGregor has always believed in providing high-quality ingredients with easy access to the public. “What started as a quick, nutritious meal option has evolved into a space of healing and wellness, where every product is carefully crafted to support specific health needs.”

What sets Kaleidoscope Juice apart from the many juice spots around the valley? McGregor points to their dedication to organic, customizable blends tailored to health needs. “We’re the only organic juice, smoothie, and café concept in the valley that offers customizable blends, from low-FODMAP options to those supporting female reproductive health.” Many menu items reflect McGregor’s background. For instance, the “Ann” juice was developed during her coursework in oncology nutrition and supports chemotherapy and radiation patients. “It features ingredients that enhance treatment efficacy and mitigate side effects.” Another example is “The Pill,” which combines organic dill, cucumber, and ginseng to aid digestion, ease bloating, and alleviate menstrual pain. Kaleidoscope Juice also shows a strong commitment to the community, hosting Women’s Wellness Summits to empower women in the valley through nutrition, science, and business. “My vision is to expand Kaleidoscope Juice as an educational resource, helping customers become their own health advocates,” McGregor says. “We aim to guide individuals on their wellness journeys, both through our products and the knowledge we share.” For more information about Kaleidoscope Juice or to find a location near you, visit their website at kaleidoscope-love.square.site.

As the New Year begins, health and wellness often top our list of priorities. It’s a time to set goals, refocus, and embrace opportunities to improve both body and mind. Stepping back into the fitness industry, Felicia Romero is bringing fresh energy and purpose to her passion for empowering others. With years of experience and a reputation as a trusted fitness expert, Felicia is partnering with OHM Fitness to help clients achieve balanced and sustainable wellness. “Returning to fitness feels like coming home,” Felicia shares. “Helping people transform their lives through movement and mindset has always been my passion, and OHM Fitness provides the perfect platform to bring innovative solutions to the industry.” OHM Fitness is redefining what it means to get fit by blending cutting-edge EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) technology, personalized coaching, and recovery-focused practices. Unlike traditional workouts, EMS sessions deliver the equivalent of a 90-minute workout in just 25 minutes, engaging deep muscles while reducing strain on joints. This efficiency makes it accessible for individuals of all fitness levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes. Members report noticeable benefits, such as faster fat loss, improved

muscle tone, and increased energy. But the impact goes beyond physical changes. “It’s about more than looking good—it’s about feeling good inside and out,” Felicia emphasizes. The mental clarity, confidence, and sense of accomplishment that members gain are often life-changing. One of OHM Fitness’s defining features is its supportive, judgment-free community. Members frequently highlight the encouragement they receive as a key part of their fitness journey. This welcoming environment helps people overcome intimidation and take their first steps toward wellness. Felicia acknowledges how daunting starting a fitness journey can feel but offers reassurance: “Start small. Focus on consistency over perfection. Progress builds momentum, and OHM’s community ensures you’re never alone in the process.” In addition to efficient workouts, OHM Fitness prioritizes recovery as a critical component of its approach. The integration of red light therapy and EMS technology not only prevents injuries but also promotes stress reduction and muscle rebuilding. Proper recovery is a cornerstone of sustainable fitness, a belief Felicia shares passionately. “Recovery is where the magic happens. It’s what allows your body to rebuild stronger and keeps you moving forward,” she says. For those balancing hectic schedules, OHM Fitness provides a perfect solution. Its 25-minute sessions make it easier to incorporate fitness into busy lives. Felicia also suggests simple ways to add movement to your day: “Take the stairs, stretch while watching TV, or walk during phone calls. Fitness doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming.”

"IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN looking good— IT’S ABOUT FEELING GOOD inside and out. CONSISTENCY BEATS PERFECTION. EVEN SLOW progress IS STILL PROGRESS." Staying motivated on a fitness journey can be challenging, especially when progress feels slow. Felicia encourages focusing on non-scale victories, such as better sleep, improved energy, or a boost in mood. She advises celebrating small wins and trusting the process, emphasizing, “Consistency beats perfection. Even slow progress is still progress.” Creating a sustainable fitness routine involves finding activities you enjoy and mixing them up to keep things engaging. Pairing EMS workouts with yoga or pilates, for instance, can enhance flexibility while strengthening the mind-body connection. Balancing intensity with recovery and setting realistic goals ensures that fitness becomes a lasting part of your lifestyle. Beyond the physical and mental benefits, fitness can also deliver surprising health improvements. Regular exercise boosts mental clarity, strengthens the

immune system, and reduces stress. OHM members often discover unexpected perks, such as improved posture and a deep sense of accomplishment from sticking to their routines. For those unsure of where to start, Felicia recommends taking small, consistent steps. “Even a 10-minute walk can work wonders for your energy and mindset. Small steps lead to big changes,” she says. Nutrition also plays a crucial role in achieving wellness. Felicia encourages pairing regular exercise with a balanced diet that includes lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Staying hydrated and prioritizing quality sleep further enhance recovery and overall health. For Felicia Romero, returning to the fitness industry is about reigniting her passion for helping others lead healthier lives. Partnering with OHM Fitness allows her to combine her expertise with technology and community, offering an innovative and holistic approach to wellness. “Wellness isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress,” she says. “With OHM, you have the tools, the support, and the community to succeed.” This New Year, whether you’re starting fresh or looking to elevate your routine, Felicia and OHM Fitness remind us that fitness is a journey. Embracing small, consistent changes can lead to profound health transformations, both inside and out. Let this year be the one where you prioritize your well-being and discover how fitness can truly revitalize your life. Together, step into a healthier, stronger, and more confident version of yourself— because the best investment you can make is in your health and happiness.

No Resolutions Gilbert's Guide to Painless Organizing using 4 tiny habits ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY Oh look, it's that time again – when everyone's making grand declarations about total life transformations and complete home overhauls. But here in Gilbert, let's do something differently this year. Forget those sweeping New Year's resolutions.. Instead, imagine transforming your home the same way our desert blooms – gradually and

The 10-Minute Kitchen & Trash Reset Nothing starts a fresh new year quite like waking up to a clean kitchen and empty trash bins. Take advantage of these cooler months when we can comfortably leave windows open to air out our spaces. Make it a habit to handle dishes immediately after meals and take out trash daily, even if the bin isn't full. Set a timer for 10 minutes each evening to wipe counters, load the dishwasher, and clear any garbage. This simple routine prevents the dreaded weekend kitchen deep-clean and establishes a fresh start to each day of the new year.

The Paper Trail Solution The new year brings a flood of papers – from W-2s and tax documents to SanTan Village winter sale ads. Create a daily paper-processing station. Spend five minutes sorting mail into three categories: immediate action, shred/recycle, and file. Use your phone to scan important documents immediately, shred sensitive materials, and recycle the rest. For financial documents, set up a simple accordion file by month, perfect for the approaching tax season. This system prevents those intimidating paper piles that seem to multiply faster than winter visitors.

with surprising beauty. While others are writing lengthy resolution lists, we're going to focus on a few tiny daily habits that actually stick. These small daily actions compound like your favorite coffee shop loyalty points – they might seem insignificant at first, but suddenly you're reaping

remarkable rewards. No more feeling overwhelmed by chaos, no more Saturday marathon cleaning sessions, and definitely no more guilt-inducing resolutions. These four mini-habits might just transform your Gilbert home from "controlled chaos" to "desert zen".

The "One-In, One-Out" Gateway Rule With post-holiday returns, gift cards, and winter sale shopping, Gilbert homes can quickly become overwhelmed with incoming items. Establish an entry zone system: designate a specific spot for packages, and before bringing in anything new, identify something to donate or discard. Break down boxes immediately and place them in your recycling bin . Partner with local Gilbert charities for donations – many are especially grateful for contributions at the start of the year. This habit ensures your entryway remains a welcoming space rather than a cardboard box maze.

The Mind-Body De-clutter Method Just as we clear our physical spaces, our minds and bodies need daily de-cluttering too. Take advantage of Gilbert's perfect winter weather for a 15-minute walk around your neighborhood or at Riparian Preserve, where the winter birds are returning. Use this time to practice mental de-cluttering through simple meditation or mindful breathing. Before bed, take five minutes to lay out tomorrow's clothes and clear your nightstand. These small actions compound to create mental clarity and physical wellness, making your home's organization feel effortless as you start the new year on the right foot. Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins Optional: chocolate chips as desired Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
