In this issue, we’re thrilled to share three exclusive cocktail recipes crafted by the talented team at Bourbon and Bones. Whether you’re hosting a holiday gathering or enjoying a quiet evening at home, these cocktails are sure to bring a festive twist to your glass.

We also feature the inspiring story of  American Nomad , a local apparel company rooted in family legacy. Following the passing of their beloved founder, his family has embraced the journey of building his vision into a lasting tribute. It’s a moving reminder of the love and strength that shape our lives and communities.

For a bit of holiday magic, join us for a behind-the-scenes look at  The Polar Express, where the excitement and wonder of the season come to life. And if you’re looking for a creative holiday project, our DIY coffee filter poinsettias are a perfect way to gather the family and craft a bit of cheer together.

Growing up, one of my favorite traditions was heading to Zoolights with my family. We’d bundle up, grab hot chocolates, and wander through the glowing lights, taking in the magic of the season together. It’s a memory I cherish and a tradition I love to keep alive each year.

Wishing you a December filled with warmth, joy, and special moments. Happy holidays from our family to yours!

Chaos WITH LOVE

A GILBERT FAMILY OF TEN SHOWS HOW DAILY AFFIRMATIONS AND INTENTIONAL

ROUTINES STRENGTHEN THEIR BONDS.

ARTICLE BY JAIME CATMULL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY QUIANNA MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

In the Nebeker household, managing eight children under ten requires more than just scheduling prowess. The morning scene captures their orchestrated chaos: Whitney supervises piano practice and backpack preparation, while John handles breakfast duty, distributing eggs and toast garnished with gummy vitamins.

The Nebekers have created a home environment focused on love, belonging, and personal growth. “We go out of our way to say, ‘I love you.’ Kids need to hear it, and they need to know it,” Whitney explains. Each day begins with family affirmations: “I am loved. I am kind. I am sunshine. I have a divine destiny.”

These daily rituals reinforce their family values and create a sense of unity.

Their approach to discipline reflects their focus on building relationships. When conflicts arise, particularly during car rides, the offender must list ten positive qualities about the person they’ve hurt. This practice often transforms tensions into moments of appreciation.

Faith and storytelling form core elements of their family culture. “We want our kids to grow in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and others around them. They may not remember everything we teach them, but hopefully they’ll remember how they feel,” John shares. The family discusses faith during

dinner, shares family stories at bedtime, and ensures each child develops skills in music, sports, and etiquette.

“When you hear others cheering for your children, there’s nothing we wouldn’t do for them,” Whitney notes about their supportive community in Gilbert. As one of the top financial advisors in the country with Eagle Strategies LLC, John brings his professional expertise home, emphasizing teaching financial responsibility and helping their children develop entrepreneurial skills from age eight. While their household may be chaotic at times, their commitment to love and continuous improvement creates a foundation for their children’s future success.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

DIY Coffee Filter Poinsettia

Guaranteed Fabulous, Budget and Kid

Friendly Holiday Craft

Add a touch of festive cheer to your home with this delightful DIY holiday craft! You’ll create stunning Poinsettia flowers using simple supplies like coffee filters and paper plates, perfect for decorating cabinets, wreaths, or gifts. Gather your materials and let your creativity shine—here are the instructions! Experiment with using your poinsettias in different ways. Embellish lanterns, napkin rings, or make a garland using a long strand of ribbon. More detailed photos of each step can be found on our City Lifestyle website!

Supplies (makes 16):

1. Large bowls

2. Spoon

3. Water

4. Food coloring or acrylic paint in red, yellow, green, and blue

5. 200 white basket coffee filters

6. 32 white, 9” uncoated paper plates

7. Plastic bags or drop cloth

8. Scissors

9. Stapler/staples

10. Glue gun/glue sticks

11. 1.5” red ribbon

12. One command hook per cabinet

1. Group filters for dyeing: 64 dark red, 48 light red, 32 yellow, 48 green, and 8 left over. Add plates to the dark red group.

2. Make dark and light red poinsettia “petals,” yellow centers, and green leaves. Fill bowl with about 1 cup water. Add about 5 drops of red dye or paint and stir with spoon. Place one of the 8 leftover filters into mixture until saturated. Remove and place on plastic bags/drop cloth to dry. Experiment with making different darker/lighter shades in additional bowls, using remaining 7 left over filters to test color. The more dye/less water used, the darker the color will be. Dye all groups from step 1 their assigned colors. Color variation is great!

PHOTOGRAPHY
PHOTOGRAPHY

3. When dry, cut red and yellow filters into flower shapes. Fold each filter in half 3 times. Holding folded filter so that the point is at the top and the rounded edge is at the bottom, cut a V shape out of the bottom. Fold each plate in half twice. Holding folded plate with the point at the top and the rounded edge at the bottom, cut an upside-down V shape out of the bottom. Make cuts more curved than straight, as pictured. Cut green filters into leaf shapes.

4. Make individual poinsettias by stacking 9 filters on top of each other. Use 4 dark red filters on the bottom, 3 light red filters in the middle, and 2 yellow filters on the top. Staple together in the center.

5. Starting with the top filter, gently scrunch into a loose ball. Scrunch the second layer around the first. Repeat with all layers. Fluff and arrange.

6. Hot glue two paper plates together, staggered and stacked, then hot glue onto bottom of filter poinsettia.

7. Hot glue 1-3 green leaves onto the back of each poinsettia.

8. To hang on cabinets, measure how much ribbon needed to reach outside center to inside and cut. Hot glue poinsettia onto one end of ribbon and attach to cabinet with a knot in the other end of the ribbon around a command hook.

Rolling On Family Keeps Nomad Spirit

JORDAN GALLUP'S WIFE AND BEST FRIEND TEAM UP TO CONTINUE HIS BELOVED AMERICAN NOMAD BRAND, KEEPING THE SOUTHWEST-MEETS-STREET MAGIC ALIVE

Since 2018, American Nomad Apparel has been like gold discovered in the backyard, familiar especially to East Valley handmade market fans. Founder Jordan Gallup gave us something truly unique with his brand that is reminiscent of popular surf labels but reflects its creator’s love of all things southwest. Jordan’s brilliant graphic design skills combined with a desert motif resulted in a shirt and hat line loved by cowboys, skaters, and everyone in between; pairing as well with RSQs as with Wranglers. Sharp designs featuring iconic cowboy skeleton characters, eagles, cacti, and retro state park signs made it feel ultra cool to be an adventurer, a Zonie and an American.

Jordan treated every visitor to his booth like a close friend, often with his children by his side. Ringing up a sale, his daughter once beamed, “Our dad makes all of this!” as she gestured to the walls of crisp shirts and hat towers. It’s no wonder this family-run business quickly captured hearts--and why Jordan’s passing on July 31st left such a profound void.

The story of Jordan’s adventure with his brainchild began when he teamed up with friend Ty Bowman. The two became close when on a church camping trip Jordan spontaneously designed a logo for Ty in just 15 minutes. “We were sitting by the fire and Jordan whipped out a sketch book,” Ty laughs as he remembers. “Afterwards I said, ‘Did we just become best friends?’”

Working out of Ty’s Lifetime Leather shop, Jordan personally did the work from concept to finished product, collaborating with Ty on leather hat patches. The two spent many late nights particularly on one significant challenge: developing a new method for gluing leather onto hats. It required two years of meticulous experimentation, consulting chemists, and learning to work quickly with a glue that had a shelf life of mere minutes. Eventually, they cracked the code for a product that met Jordan’s high standard.

“He was unstoppable,” Ty says. “He was so positive and patient.”

It was early this year that Jordan tragically began experiencing severe stomach pain. Within months, it escalated into a host of devastating issues--diverticulitis, anemia, sepsis, kidney failure, a tumor behind the left eye and around the brain, partial facial paralysis, multiple intensive surgeries, and ultimately a diagnosis of stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. Unbelievably, despite these overwhelming challenges and significant pain, Jordan continued to exude his trademark cool and upbeat attitude.

“He was always a giver,” Ty says. “Even in the hospital, he’d still ask what he could do for me.” Ever the family man, Jordan also found ways to stay connected to his six children, watching their volleyball games remotely and continuing to offer coaching and encouragement whenever he could. “Bud, I’m proud of you,” Jordan says to one of his kids from his hospital bed on Instagram, “I know you worked really hard for that. Good job, man!”

Jordan's inability to work also created considerable strain. His loving wife, Amber, became a pillar of strength, balancing the demands of motherhood while caregiving for her husband and attending to life’s practical matters as best as she could. Their supportive family, friends, church, and community at large also pitched in, contributing in various ways including donating to a Go Fund Me campaign, purchasing specially made Nomads for Jordan gear, and ultimately, donating goods and services for Jordan’s epic celebration of life.

Each American Nomad Apparel purchase not only supports this worthy label but also provides vital income for the family Jordan cherished.

Ty, who is committed to American Nomad, envisions a future of honoring Jordan’s style while collaborating with new designers who align with the brand. He often reflects on their time together, saying, “What we had went beyond friendship. We were brothers.” His commitment to “Jordan Zen Patience” serves as a guiding principle as he navigates the business landscape without his best friend. Today, Amber has stepped into a partnership with Ty, starting with hat making. Each American Nomad Apparel purchase not only supports this worthy label but also provides vital income for the family Jordan cherished so dearly.

2024 has been a year of community support serving as a lifeline for the Gallup family, reinforcing the bonds that Jordan built through his genuine care for others. Through purchases, the community can continue to honor Jordan’s legacy, ensuring that his story and the values he embodied live on. Croissant Lemon Berry Delight

CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS

• 6 large croissants (from the bakery) sliced into cubes

• 3 cups mixed berries

• 1 package cream cheese, softened

• 1 cup  sugar

• 5 eggs at room temperature

• 2 cups half and half at room temperature

• 3/4 tablespoon vanilla extract

• 3/4 tablespoon lemon juice

LEMON GLAZE INGREDIENTS

• 2 ounces cream cheese, softened

• 1 tablespoon butter, softened

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice

• 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and toast the cubed croissants on a baking dish for 10 minutes. In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add eggs, half and half, lemon juice and vanilla and mix until smooth. Place the toasted croissants into a greased 9 X 13 pan and layer with 1 ½ cups berries. Pour custard mix on top and then add the remaining berries on top. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.  Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake, covered for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes. Set aside and make glaze by adding all ingredients to a bowl and mixing until smooth. Drizzle over the casserole and sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.

Monkey Bread

INGREDIENTS

• 18-20 Rhodes white frozen rolls

• 1 regular box of cook and serve butterscotch pudding

• ½ cup chopped pecans

• 6 tablespoons butter, melted

• ¾ teaspoons cinnamon

• ½ cup brown sugar

DIRECTIONS

Grease a bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray. Sprinkle chopped pecans around the bottom of the bundt pan. Next, place frozen rolls in the pan, evenly spreading them out. Sprinkle the rolls with the dry pudding mix. Melt butter in a separate container, and add cinnamon and brown sugar and stir. Pour butter and sugar mixture over the rolls. Cover with saran wrap that is sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Place in a cool oven overnight with the light off. Bake the next morning at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes and then turn the bundt pan over onto a serving plate and gently pry out of the pan, allowing time for the pecans and toppings to drip on top. Enjoy!

Gourmet Hot Chocolate

Add a little extra pizazz to your hot chocolate by using half and half instead of milk, sprinkle with cinnamon and top with a snowman made out of marshmallows and pretzel sticks.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• ½ cup of cocoa powder

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional

• Milk or half and half

DIRECTIONS

Add all ingredients in a bowl and stir. For individual servings, mix ½ cocoa mix with ½ cup milk. Add desired amount of cocoa mix with milk to desired sweetness. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows.

How to Make the Holidays Work for You

The holiday season can bring a range of emotions, especially for those with challenging pasts. For high achievers, it often adds pressure to perform or please. These tips will help you clarify your focus, set boundaries, and make choices that support your well-being.

1. Clarify Your Vision: Decide on the experience you want this holiday season to deliver. Ask yourself what would feel genuinely satisfying and restorative, and let this focus serve as your guiding intention.

2. Set Boundaries: Define clear boundaries around your time and energy to protect your holiday focus. These boundaries are essential for honoring your intentions and staying true to what matters most. Communicate them as needed to ensure others understand and respect your choices.

3. Stay Flexible and Intentional: Your focus may shift week by week, and that is perfectly okay. Honor what feels right in the moment while remaining true to your broader vision of how you want this season to support you.

4. Release Perfection: There is no single “right” way to spend the holidays. There is only what feels right for you. Give yourself permission to prioritize your needs and let go of the need for a perfect holiday experience.

VG Therapy Collective is here to support you in making this holiday season truly yours. Take control, set boundaries, and prioritize what matters most to you. Create a season of joy and fulfillment on your own terms.
