Here's to a Fantastic New Year!

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Guess what time it is? Yep, the season of excitement and new beginnings. It's like hitting the reset button, setting out on new adventures, and jotting down all those ambitious goals. But hey, January isn't all sunshine and rainbows for everyone. For some, it's a reminder of past attempts gone wrong and the heavy expectation that this year has to be different. So, for this edition, we decided to skip the quick fixes and focus on the long game. We're all about those lasting, realistic improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. You know, in life, whether it's in business, handling money, dealing with food, keeping house, or taking care of your health – it's not the occasional grand moves that really make a difference. Nope, it's what you do on most days that counts. For better or worse! Let's break it down. Taking a vacation every day? Nice dream, but not really doable. How about a few trips a year instead? Much more realistic. And that nightly feast of steaks, cocktails, and Crème Brûlée? Delicious, but definitely not the healthiest. Save it for a special occasion every now and then. It's not about the rare choices; it's about the routine ones. So, go ahead, plan that dream vacation and also squeeze in some regular downtime during your work week. Join a fitness group or hit the gym, and don't forget to treat yourself to that mouthwatering dessert you've been eyeing at a local bakery. Remember, it's not what you do sometimes – it's what you do most days that'll make this year the best! Cheers to you and all the awesome choices coming your way!

Fabulous Finds Pickleball Paradise: Four Gilbert Pickleball Hotspots

Whether you’re a seasoned pickleball pro or curious about the hype, Gilbert has an array of courts suited for all levels. For those not caught up in the trend, pickleball is a paddle sport similar to badminton and tennis. Despite its name, there’s no confirmed connection to pickles. It can be played with singles or doubles and all you need to play is a net, paddle and ball. The earliest game of pickleball can be traced back to the backyard of a congressman from Washington state in the 1960s. It was officially recognized as a sport in 1972 and it has now become the fastest-growing sport in America according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. It was created to cure summer boredom, but it has evolved into a competitive sport with a variety of skill levels and tournaments taking place nationwide. Boasting more than 4.8 million participants across the nation, its explosive growth can be attributed to community interest with pickleball courts popping up at recreation centers, parks, retirement communities, etc… Gilbert is participating in the craze with a variety of both indoor and outdoor courts scattered throughout the town. Pickleball enthusiasts in Gilbert now have access to courts at two beloved community spots: Gilbert Regional Park and Freestone Recreation Center, thanks to Gilbert Parks and Recreation. Pickleball Backyard is a dedicated hub open 24 hours and offers lessons, clinics tournaments and more. Highland High School also contributes to the growing pickleball scene with its eight outdoor courts. If any of your New Year’s resolutions involve socializing more or adopting a more active lifestyle, pickleball offers a fantastic opportunity to achieve both goals. Visit one of these Gilbert courts today to immerse yourself in the excitement.

Gilbert Regional Park

Freestone Recreation Center

Highland High School

Gilbert Regional Park opened in 2019 and features 16 outdoor pickleball courts. There are permanent lines and nets, all guests need to bring are balls and paddles. They are free to use, lighted to support night play and there’s access to amenities like restrooms and water. Gilbert Regional Park is open from 5 am to 10 pm daily and the pickleball courts are first come first serve.

This Gilbert staple has been serving the community for over 20 years and has added two indoor pickleball courts. Day passes are $3 to $4 depending on age and residency status. There are also a variety of memberships available so you can take advantage of all Freestone Recreation Center’s amenities. The pickleball courts feature permanent lines and there are portable nets available.

Highland High School, the home of the Hawks, boasts eight well-lit pickleball courts featuring permanent lines. While the courts are free and open to all, guests must bring a net, balls, and paddles for play. The school also has an indoor court which can be used free of charge so that you can still enjoy a game when it starts to get too hot outside. With both options available, you can play pickleball year round at Highland High School.

In the new year, we often take stock of our personal health and overall wellness. This typically means visiting our personal physicians and making sure we are as healthy as we can be. However, in many cases, people find out they are dealing with life-threatening conditions and illnesses and aren’t sure where to turn once they receive the news of their ailments. That is where the City of Hope comes into action. City of Hope is on a mission to deliver the cures of tomorrow to the people who need them today. Founded back in 1913, City of Hope is now one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S., as well as one of the leading research centers for diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses. With locations across the U.S., City of Hope Cancer Care Gilbert is one of the spots people can go to for assistance, care, and overall support for treatment of their conditions. According to Noah Flack, Communications Specialist with City of Hope, there is plenty of care to be found at the Gilbert location. “City of Hope Cancer Care Gilbert offers medical oncology consultations, chemotherapy infusion, advanced genomic testing, and supportive care services, as well as genetic testing and genetic counseling via our telehealth program. Whether you’ve been recently diagnosed or you’re seeking a second opinion, our Gilbert outpatient care center offers expertise that comes from working exclusively with cancer patients.” The best part is that the Gilbert outpatient care center is available for anyone. Whether you need outpatient care, have been recently diagnosed, or are seeking a second opinion, the center offers expertise and support systems for the public. City of Hope brings an integrated model to patients, basically offering them comprehensive care all in one

spot, spanning cancer care, research and development, academics, and training. It takes thousands of people to make the City of Hope successful across all locations, and for Flack, he says the mission is what brings them all together. “All of us are united by our desire to find cures and save lives.” And saving lives is what City of Hope is focused on. In 2024, we all may be seeking ways to keep on track with our health, here are some ideas on how people can focus on wellness and stay healthy in the new year.

CANCER PREVENTION

These may seem like common prevention tips, but they are important and may reduce the risk of developing cancer and other illnesses. While there are some factors you cannot control, according to statistics from the American Cancer Society, more than 40 percent of all cancer cases and deaths in the U.S. are linked to modifiable risk factors, meaning they are preventable. The following steps may go a long way in lowering the risk of cancer, or even preventing it in the long run: • Don’t smoke; quit tobacco use and avoid second-hand smoke. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Eat a healthy diet that’s mainly plant-based and avoids fatty and processed foods. • Exercise regularly • Limit alcohol consumption, no more than one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men. • Avoid overexposure to the sun and ultraviolet (UV) light. • Receive recommended vaccinations including for hepatitis B and human papillomavirus (HPV). • Practice safe sex. • Get annual check-ups.

It takes thousands of people to make the City of Hope successful and the mission is what brings them all together. “All of us are united by our desire to find cures and save lives.” 30

EARLY DETECTION

Early detection is also key, because that is when treatment options are more likely to have positive outcomes. Be sure to schedule all recommended cancer screening tests and understand concerning symptoms you should be on the lookout for. Common screening tests that City of Hope suggests for valley residents include: • Mammogram, an imaging test for breast cancer • Pap smear / Pap test, a screening test for cervical cancer • Colonoscopy, a screening for colorectal cancer, including colon cancer • Low dose computed tomography (CT) scan, a screening for lung cancer • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, screening for prostate cancer • Skin exam, screening test for skin cancer or melanoma The City of Hope understands and knows that screening tests are a vital step in the process, detecting cancer even before symptoms can appear. Flack says, “The main goal of screening is to decrease the number of people dying from the disease, but as in any procedure, there could be risks, so be sure to speak with your doctor about benefits and dangers of any procedure ahead of time.” City of Hope is organizationally structured for increasing the speed with which treatment solutions progress from research lab to production facility to patient. The City of Hope also recommends one of the key ways to avoid getting sick, is prevention tools such as eating and exercising.

EATING AND EXERCISE AS CANCER PREVENTION TOOLS

Diet: • Watch portion sizes. • Limit the intake of high-calorie foods and drinks, avoiding those that are high in fat or added sugars. • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables of different colors— dark red, green and orange—and whole-grain foods. • Choose fish, poultry and beans over red meat or processed meats for protein sources.

Exercise: • Physical activity for adults should include moderate activities such as a brisk walk and more vigorous activities that cause you to sweat. Weekly recommendations include 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate activity and 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous exercise. • Cut back on sedentary activities such as lying on a couch or watching TV. In the end, it is always important to maintain a healthy diet as part of any illness and wellness prevention program.

ASK PHYSICIAN QUESTIONS

One of the best things you can do when you are worried about any symptoms you may be experiencing or are just concerned about your overall health, is simply ask your physician and care team questions. They are there to help. Here are some questions that may help: • Which cancer screenings do I need to have done now, and which ones should I schedule in the future? • What weight range is most desirable for me, and are there particular foods I should be eating or avoiding? • How much exercise should I aim for each week? Are there specific exercises that may be most beneficial to me? • What’s the best way to perform a personal risk assessment for cancer? • Does the history of cancer in my family put me at higher risk for the disease? Should I consider genetic testing? The teams of doctors and care workers at City of Hope have been fighting the good fight against life-threatening illnesses for decades, and there are no plans of stopping anytime soon. “Health is a human right,” shared Flack. “From our earliest days as simply two tents in the California desert, the City of Hope has transformed to become one of the nation’s leading-edge cancer treatment and care centers.” City of Hope’s growth also includes the much anticipated over 10-million-dollar expansion investment in the Gilbert location. The Gilbert Cancer Care Team is excited about the addition of more cutting edge radiation and radiology services being added to the clinic location for use in 2025.

G

illean Barkyoumb has been a media dietitian for over a decade. She’s worked with many brands and has valuable experience breaking down complicated nutrition concepts and making them easy to understand. She now educates people on nutrition through her blog, and founded the “What’s For Dinner Club” to make dieting more accessible for even the busiest of people. “Nutrition, fitness and health are all tied together,” Barkyoumb says. “You really can’t have one without the other. You will eventually hit a plateau, but if you work on all of it together, you will reach your goals and maintain your results – that’s the biggie.”

She also says another important factor in goal-making is visualizing what you want your future self to be like. “I love a good meditation focusing on who your future self is when trying to achieve new goals,” Barkyoumb says. “Sit down for a few minutes every couple of days, close your eyes and just envision what you want that person to be like. How do they feel? What are they wearing? Who is with them? What does their house look like? When you can see the whole picture, you know where you are heading. If you are not a meditation person, then journaling works too. Think about the small details like what is on your future self’s kitchen counter, and dream big too. Are you now a fitness instructor? Did you join a hiking club?” While it can be easy to shoot for the stars when it comes to making healthy

changes, nutrition doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Barkyoumb broke down her nutritional philosophy that may help some change their mindset and create sustainable healthy habits. “It’s not one big decision,” Barkyoumb says. “It’s thousands of little decisions. It’s not one decision to follow a new diet or cut out a certain food. Nutrition is about making little decisions every day and being intentional with how you fuel your body and the foods you eat. It’s about saying no to the office donuts. It’s about getting an extra serving of vegetables and it’s also about deciding when you really want that delicious piece of cake from your favorite bakery, eating it, enjoying it, and feeling zero guilt about it. All those little decisions add up.” To make it even easier for those looking to make lasting changes, she CONTINUED >

provided her top nutrition tips, gave a glimpse inside her pantry and shared her family’s go-to meals.

BARKYOUMB’S TOP NUTRITION TIPS:

• Make half your plate veggies - This is such an easy tip. When you look down at your plate, divide it in half, and that much should be vegetables. • Follow my “Snack Formula” - When you have a snack (usually 2 times per day, once mid-morning and once mid-afternoon), you want to have protein + produce. Protein will keep you full and produce (fruits and veggies) provide energy so you don’t get that between-meal lull. • Focus on protein at each meal Whether it’s plant-based protein or meat like chicken or beef, getting a good source of protein at each meal helps you feel full and can support weight management goals. • Portion control - This is where I tell everyone to start. Just look at the amount of food you are eating. Are you eating enough vegetables? There is a time and place for it all but maybe you are out of balance. • Hydration - If you feel super overwhelmed with all the diet to-do’s, start

36

with just making sure you have enough water every day. To know how much water you need, take your body weight in pounds and divide it in half. You need that many ounces of water per day. For example, if you are 150 pounds, you need 75 ounces of water per day. • Stick to a routine - Most healthy people have a routine. They wake up around the same time. They have their snacks and meals around the same time every day. They fill up their water first thing in the morning. They take their vitamins right after they eat breakfast. Find your routine and stick to it.

STAPLES FOR DELICIOUS AND HEALTHY MEALS: • • • •

Rotisserie chicken Eggs Sourdough bread Sparkling water - Pour into a fancy glass for a mocktail. • Trail mix • Bagged salads

BARKYOUMB FAMILY FAVORITES:

• Fajita tacos - I love a one-sheet meal. I lay out tortillas and top them with shredded rotisserie chicken, sliced bell pepper and onions, and cheese. It’s also

easy to make a few cheese crisps on the tray for picky kids. • Cheeseburger salad - Take a burger patty plus all your favorite burger toppings and add to some mixed greens! Tomato, pickles, onion, cheese, etc… and drizzle with yogurt-based ranch dressing. • Snack plate - This is a favorite in our house. We load up our places with veggies, hummus, fruit, nuts, cheese, salami, crackers, and whatever needs to get eaten up in the fridge or pantry. From nutrition philosophies and mindset advice to easy meals and pantry staples, Barkyoumb is committed to helping Gilbert individuals and families reach New Year’s resolutions. These practical strategies can be applied to anyone’s life, but for specific guidance sign up for Barkyoumb’s “What’s For Dinner Club,” where she provides weekly recipes with gluten-free, plant-based and kid-friendly options. TAKING HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE IN THE NEW YEAR

MEDICAL CLINIC FOCUSES ON PREVENTATIVE CARE

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Health and wellness preventative care comes in many forms and from many different angles. One way that people are finding help keeping healthy is through a holistic approach to medicine. Functional medicine is one of the key prevention-measures that people are doing today, and Valley resident Robert Alexander is helping others do just that through his clinic, Alexander Medical. According to Alexander, his mission is straightforward, “our goal is to maintain wellness through disease prevention.” Alexander Medical focuses on prevention through treatments offered at the clinic including hormone optimization, dietary counseling, creation and coordination of exercise routines, and medically guided weight loss. Alexander says that isn’t all, “as a concierge wellness service, we also provide treatment for common chronic conditions.” “More than one-third of all Americans are diagnosed with Metabolic Dysfunction which can lead to a wide variety of unwanted health problems if ignored,” says Alexander.

Metabolic Dysfunction is at the root of many diseases and illnesses facing people today including heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. “Common symptoms indicative of Metabolic Dysfunction are increased waist circumference, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, and increased glucose levels.” One of the most commonly diagnosed Metabolic Dysfunctions is insulin resistance. Around the age of 30, people start to see a decline in muscle mass at about three percent per year. Alexander says there are reasons behind what they are seeing. “Most people are consuming more processed foods, sugars, and carbs than they realize, which provide them with a surplus of these calories, drives the reduction in muscle decreases and affects their ability to process these calories leading to more fat storage.” When it comes to functional medicine, practitioners like Alexander can help determine the root cause of a patient’s problem, and support the patient as a whole person, rather than treating symptoms, one symptom at a time. “Our providers at can help you achieve optimal health by adjusting your diet, modifying exercise, optimizing suboptimal hormone levels, improving sleep, and utilizing nutraceuticals to improve deficiencies,” shares Alexander. “There is not a one size fits all solution which is why we customize care to each of our patients.” Really for Alexander, it comes down to patient care through a holistic approach. “Preventing disease is very important, if not the most critical aspect of healthcare,” says Alexander. Alexander stresses that while many people are looking at their overall health and wellness

when the new year comes around, making your good health a habit is a commitment that takes time. “This is why so many people struggle with keeping up their new year’s health and wellness, based on a resolution.” He stresses that it isn’t a quick fix, “It is not a switch you can flip on overnight. Being consistent with your healthy lifestyle throughout the year helps you build lasting habits that will create a balanced body. It doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy special occasions and splurge once in a while, but when you’ve established a healthy foundation all year it’s a lot easier to get back on track.” Alexander says when it comes to your health, it is far better to be proactive versus reactive. “Your health is not a short term, fad diet. It is the way you choose to live every day versus a drastic lifestyle change that people try to put into place as part of a resolution.” Alexander and his team at Alexander Medical want to make sure Gilbert City Lifestyle Magazine readers are putting their health and wellness in focus in the new year. They are offering special pricing on the initial wellness panel when you mention this article at your consultation. They offer both in person and telehealth options. Your Wellness

Ever wondered if ancient

Imagine the wisdom of a timeless health manifesto from circa 2600 BC - the Huangdi Neijing - combined with today’s holistic medicine, where Eastern wisdom takes center stage. This holistic approach, rooted in ancient traditions like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), distinguishes itself with a proactive focus on prevention rather than mere symptom management. TCM, guided by the philosophy of balancing the body’s energy flow or Chi (also spelled qi) offers a holistic sanctuary for your health. As the Huangdi Neijing wisely puts it, “Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.” Embrace

this wisdom by seamlessly incorporating Eastern medicine treatments – acupuncture, energy healing, and medicinal herbs – into your home. Connecting your health and your home offers a personalized and natural approach to well-being, reaching beyond the physical to nurture emotional and energetic balance. Evolve Counseling & Behavioral Health Services

New Year, Secure Bonds: Nurturing Attachment in 2024 At the core of our human experience is the fundamental need for connection. Our relationships with caregivers shape one of four attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized. Despite their unique responses to stressors, each style shares a common goal—a profound desire to be loved and seen. Nurturing a secure attachment is like giving your child a lifelong superpower. It is the ultimate predictor for resilience, healthy self-esteem, and maintaining emotional balance. Although the journey can be challenging, it is entirely possible. Dr. Tina Payne Bryson and Daniel J. Siegel identified four key components necessary to develop a secure attachment style, the 4 S’s: safety, seen, soothed, and secure. Safe: Do no harm—provide both physical and emotional safety. Keep them safe from harm and be a comforting presence rather than a source of fear. Seen: Show genuine interest in their experiences. Thoughtfully address their wants and needs, taking the time to understand their thoughts and emotions. Soothed: Comfort your child using verbal, non-verbal, and physical cues. While you may not erase their pain, your calming and empathetic presence ensures they never face it alone. Secure: Consistently showing up for your child establishes a secure base. Each instance of making them feel safe, seen, and soothed builds trust and security. Despite negative life experiences and learned patterns, everyone can cultivate a secure attachment style through supportive relationships. This year, consider seeking the guidance of an attachment-based therapist and actively foster the strong emotional connections that you and your children deserve.
