Once monsoon season rolls though the Valley, people become aware of leaks and other roofing issues Roofers in the Valley get exceptionally busy this time of year. We are fully staffed and ready to get to work.
The Kids & Pets issue is always one of my favorites. I think it must be in part the joy that children bring to our lives and the significant impact they make on our community. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment. We are so happy to highlight some amazing things for the Gilbert kids in this issue.
A special thanks to Krista Carpenter-Beasley for eating her fair share of chicken nuggets and mac-n-cheese to bring you an amazing kids food tour.
Let’s not forget our pets, or fur babies. That special friendship that can be life changing for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. You just can't ignore the bond between kids and their furry, scaly, bubbly, or feathery friends?
I know for a fact that my dog, Ann, is hands down the world’s best Spinone. She in fact has been a second mother to my children and a few rescue kittens that made their way to our home. Our other Spinone, Grace, well - we will save that for another letter, let’s just say her name is not quite synonymous with her personality.
I found this issue a little harder than usual as there are so many cute pups on these pages. It makes me think back to when our Ann was just a puppy. However, this is a sad time for us as our dear Annie is quietly spending her final days with the family. She has been our children’s protector, my alarm clock, food taster and spill manager, the family comedian, and the most loyal friend. In these last heartbreaking days, she is still making sure that I know she is right there for me with a smile and a tail wiggle as if to say “Don’t be sad mom, it will be ok”.
What children and pets share in common is that they need us. They need our care, our attention, and our intention shapes who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life. We hope you will take a great new adventure together. Please keep our family in your prayers this month as we spend this precious time with our girl and our children.

Your Guide to Visiting the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADINE BUBECK
Gilbert is called home by so many Canadian families in the winter, we thought it might be fun to head north for a visit this summer.
ALBERTA’S BEST
Dubbed one of the most beautiful places on earth, Banff is the heart and soul of the Canadian Rockies. Banff is Canada’s first National Park; a nirvana of awe-inspiring mountain peaks, crystalline lakes, and a vibrant wildlife. The breathtaking area attracts bucket-list visitors from around the world. In winter, embark on a dazzling wonderland... and in the brief summer season, experience a sunny, serene, and stunning adventure fit for the whole family.
Known as Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies,” sits the world-famous Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. The grandiose castle is dressed in Scottish hues and vintage chandeliers, dating over 130 years. Its décor and ambiance reflect its rich history; in fact, ghosts are known to haunt the hotel. Tip: take the guided hotel history tour; it’s fascinating.
Banff Springs has an indoor/outdoor pool and awesome adventure center where families can opt for a wildlife tour via golf cart. During the tour, you’ll see Bow Falls, jaw-dropping views, and cruise the property’s esteemed golf course.
Break from the kiddos at the award-winning Fairmont Spa, and book brunch in the Private 360 Dining Dome packed with pastries and bottomless bubbly. Surrounded by extreme panorama, you’ll be swooned by the food and a not-too-shabby Banff backdrop. Finally, indulge in a delightful High Tea over bite-sized crumpets and cake.
The Rimrock Resort Hotel flaunts the ultimate luxe setup: a Grandview One Bedroom Suite (yes, book this exact accommodation). The suite boasts impressive balconies that will make you feel one with the mountains among the towering trees. Plus, it has a separate living space ideal for families.
With Rimrock’s unparalleled location, worldclass amenities and impeccable service, this elegant retreat is the ultimate spot for Banff visitors. There’s a pool, basketball/racquetball court, and plenty of scenic spots to dine; however, the most notable is Eden, named North America’s Best Fine Dining Hotel Restaurant in 2022. The French-infused eatery is the ultimate dinner date night. The delectable Chef’s Tasting Menu pleases all palates deliciously paired with sommelier-chosen vino.
About 30 minutes from Banff sits Lake Louise, the world’s most photographed lake. Why? Because it’s the most surreal hue of turquoise you’ll ever see. And, the only hotel sitting directly on the magnificent body of water is Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
Surrounded by soaring mountain peaks, the majestic Victoria Glacier, and the glistening emerald lake, stands the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Roomy and lovely Deluxe rooms have unobstructed views, and if you book the Gold Club, you’ll have access to a lounge offering food and drinks throughout the day.
On the property, head to the boathouse for canoeing atop the aquamarine water of Lake Louise. Then, take the scenic stroll around the lake and hike on-site trails to lookouts and to the esteemed Tea House.
Kids will love the “Adventure Passport” scavenger hunt, a self-guided mystery tour around the property. The two-hour “expedition” is a great way to see the hotel’s hidden hot spots.
The Columbia Icefield Adventure is the only tour in the world that brings you to a glacier via buses, aka Ice Explorers. The road to the expedition- the Icefields Parkway- is the prettiest in the world, and once you arrive, you’ll embark on quite an adventure courtesy of the Pursuit Collection. The exciting experience lets you walk on the glistening glacier, and if you’re feeling frisky, give yourself a “glacier facial” in the water’s fountain of youth.
For a serene float, book a Bow River raft tour through Canmore River Adventures. The relaxing rapid-free float flaunts the Three Sisters Mountains as a backdrop. Canmore is also home to the Grassi Lakes hike, a family favorite. The rewarding trail leads you to picturesque play spots.
About an hour from Banff is the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, the only such rescue in Canada. (A wolfdog
Gilbert is called home by so many Canadian families in the winter, we thought it might be fun to become reverse snowbirds and head to Canada this summer for a visit.
is part dog, part wild wolf.) The educational experience lets you safely observe the wolfdogs and maybe snag a meetand-greet. Canada supports the largest grey wolf population in the world and such experiences instill in kids a respect, responsibility, and adoration towards nature and wildlife.
The Lake Louise ski mountain turns into a wonderland in winter, but in summer, it’s a hot spot for bear sightings. The scenic chairlift is an invigorating ride where you can safely scan for grizzlies. At the top, venture on a guided hike via the “Trail of the Great Bear” where you’ll learn about the area’s ultra-intriguing wildlife.
The Banff Gondola lets you discover sweeping scenes of six mountain ranges, the Bow Valley, and the charming town of Banff from the Sulphur Mountain summit. At the top, stroll the boardwalk to the Cosmic Ray Station and Sanson's Peak.
Finally, make sure to pit-stop at the park’s many lakes. Take a cruise on Lake Minnewanka, where your guide will share about the lake’s eerie history like homing a sea monster and underwater ghost town. Emerald Lake is also a must-do. There’s a family friendly trail around the entire lake that’s diverse in landscape and ideal for photo ops.
From Sky Harbor Airport, fly Air Canada to Calgary. The airline is comfortable and accommodating for families with top notch in-flight entertainment. Rent a car at the Calgary airport; the drive to Banff is an easy 90 minutes.
BUILDING AN ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR YOUNG ATHLETES TO FLOURISH WITH DONAVAN AND ROXI MCNABB
Are elite athletes born or made? We have all heard this question being asked before at some point or another. Sport scientists, trainers, managers, corporate sponsors, and parents have been asking this same question for ages. If there was a recipe, someone would probably have already made a fortune.
Elite athletes inspire us by their amazing accomplishments but also by their tenacity, their commitment, the disciples they have to submit themselves to and the mental toughness that it takes to stay motivated. Sure, there is an exceptional amount of natural talent – you and I probably could spend most of our life practicing without ever having a hope of going head-to-head with the likes of Lionel Messi, LeBron James, or Serena Williams –but talent is not the only foundation great athletes rely on in order to excel in their fields.
Most important of all the factors contributing to the development of young and talented athletes is the environment they grow up in. When and where they were born, access to training facilities,
Elite athletes inspire us by their amazing accomplishments but also by their tenacity, their commitment, the disciples they have to submit themselves to and the mental toughness that it takes to stay motivated.
Both Donovan and Roxi have experienced the benefits of being exposed to sports early and are working on building an environment for their children to flourish.
coaches, and a community that supports them, but also provides them the social and cultural support needed to shape their development. Recent studies even consider the presence of older siblings as an environmental factor contributing to the development of young athletes –consider Venus and Serena, Peyton and Eli, Michael and Larry Jordan.
Two people who would know this better than most are long time Gilbert residents Raquel-Ann ‘Roxi’ McNabb and her husband Donovan.
If the name sounds familiar, it may be that Donovan McNabb was starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles from his rookie season in 1999 and held the position for the majority of his career, including leading the Eagles to five NFC East division titles and to eight playoff appearances.
An elite athlete herself, Roxi was a point guard for the Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team, was Most Valuable Player, 1997 Athlete of the Year, and a three-time Big East Academic All-Star. She also holds a Master of Public Administration Degree from Syracuse’s Maxwell School and a Master of Educational Policy from the University of Pennsylvania.
As you can imagine, the McNabb family can be a bit competitive. Following in the footsteps of her parents, their daughter Alexis, ‘Lexi’, is a freshman guard on the Syracuse women’s basketball team and, according to dad, the friendly game of hoops with the boys - Donovan Jr. and Devin - can become spirited.
Both Donovan and Roxi have experienced the benefits of being exposed to sports early and are working on building an environment for their children to flourish. They are also committed to building a community that can provide this opportunity to other young and talented athletes.
The Caris Sports Foundation, founded in 2019 by Roxi, gives young athletes in Arizona the opportunity to participate in organized sports by removing the financial obstacles and covering the costs associated with recreational and competitive sports. The foundation assists financially with equipment to registration fees. - carissportsfoundation.org
My parents have a shop in another state so I always check with them on pricing before agreeing to anything at a mechanic. Highline has never overcharged for anything and they’re always prompt and super friendly. Easy to get in the next day too. Highly recommend!

Once upon a time in a Gilbert neighborhood there lived a middle school math teacher and book lover, Danika Lounds. The Indiana native turned desert dweller is a steward for Lounds Library, a community book exchange hosted out of a cute wooden box. The library is a charter of the Little Free Library organization, a nonprofit dedicated to spreading the love of reading and making books more accessible to kids and adults nationwide.
Lounds says she happened upon a Little Free Library a few years ago and mentioned to her husband that she wanted to steward one for her community in the future. Her husband, Christopher, gifted her the library for her 30th birthday, bringing joy not only to Danika but to the entire neighborhood.
UPS and Amazon delivery drivers have even stopped to peruse the book selections. The most popular books are early readers and small chapter books. Lounds says she hopes kids in the neighborhood are enjoying the library on their summer break.
She keeps the library stocked with an assortment of books of all genres and reading levels. From children’s books to adult thrillers and romance, this little library has something for everyone. Community members can also help load up the library by donating books in person or online or by leaving a book when they take one, but that’s not a requirement. Lounds says her favorite part of being a steward is seeing what books were taken and which books were added to her library. As an avid reader, she says, “It’s always a pleasant surprise when I find a book I have wanted to read in our library.”
From the outside, the Lounds Library looks like a miniature house with an exterior mirroring a typical Arizona home. The inside is vibrant and filled with stories that’ll transport readers to new worlds and take them on thrilling adventures. To find a Little Free Library, visit www.littlefreelibrary.org and type in a location or charter number. Lounds Library is Little Free Library Charter Number 159645.

"I truly hope kids in the neighborhood are enjoying the library on their summer break."
Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.
The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.
Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?
First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.
Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple hen house can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.
Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.
Hens will lay eggs through Spring and Summer and into the Fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.
Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.
All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.
Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.
Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.
Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com .
Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.

If you find yourself dwelling on mistakes that you made in your past, it might be time to look at the importance of forgiving yourself. The difficult decisions or poor choices that you made at a time where you did not know any better do not have to define you.
It is important to understand the nuance that led to your choices. Those choices are actions that you took, not a reflection of the person that you are. If you are on a path of personal growth and well-being, self-forgiveness will be a massively significant part of your journey.
Forgiving yourself can be transformative in letting go of resentment, guilt, and shame. While it is easy to get caught up in the vicious cycle of self-blame, it can hinder us from progressing and finding harmony within ourselves.
Self-forgiveness liberates the soul. The first step is recognizing and acknowledging your flaws while embracing your humanity. Acknowledging your mistakes can cause discomfort, however, it is important to recognize them rather than burying them. Give yourself the opportunity to sit with your uncomfortable feelings and create space for them. This requires selfcompassion and understanding, which will ultimately lead to resilience and growth. Self-forgiveness can also allow us to escape the shackles of pessimism and self-destruction. By holding onto animosity towards ourselves, we drain ourselves of our power and energy.
Forgiving yourself can allow you to redirect that power and energy and apply it toward happiness and growth instead. By releasing ourselves from the burden of our mistakes, we can try to learn from them and create positive change.
