Just as the first few bars of the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood introduction are recognized by the vast majority of the American population, so do the first few bars of the “Rajio Taiso” daily broadcast resonate with generations of Japanese people. More akin to the “Macarena” or the “Cha Cha Slide”, this music sets the cadence used by millions of Japanese over the last 94 years to complete a sequence of 13 calisthenic exercises every morning at 6:30AM. It bears repeating: 13 exercises, for 10 minutes, every morning, for 94 years…and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how long some of the older members of the Japanese population have been at it! “Rajio Taiso” is not a new concept, but it is the inspiration behind a new passion for the personal trainer, reality show personality, and author, Chris Powell. His new challenge is to “Move One Million”, to have as many people as possible adopt

this simple principle: to move for just 2:30 minutes every day. “It’s simple, but it is huge”, as Chris says, “the difficult part is always to start moving. A body in motion will stay in motion.” The face looks familiar, the energy certainly is. For 20 years, health and fitness has been at the center of Chris’ life. You may have known him from his segment on Good Morning Arizona and, later, for the ABC hit show “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss”, but his journey to fitness began way earlier when faced with a challenge too many have had to face when growing up: bullying and self-esteem. Born in Mesa, Chris moved around a lot before his family settled down in Portland, Oregon. The smallest in his school, he tried out for the high school football team, but was rejected. Crushed and defeated, he felt depressed and miserable. Soon after, he came home to find that the living room had been cleared and that, in place of

furniture, it was now occupied by workout equipment…and the family television. Exercising every day, Chris began adding a little more weight, a few more reps. Pretty soon, he was devouring every fitness magazine he could lay his hands on. Eventually, he even found the courage to head back to his school gym to work out. This time, his knowledge and work ethic won the respect of the same football players who had bullied him before. After high school, Chris began looking for a career. The son of an airline pilot, he fully expected to follow in his father’s footsteps. While “building his hours”, i.e. the number of hours a pilot needs in order to be certified in each of the area needed to become an airline pilot, Chris attended ASU majoring in Fitness Science. He may have had a passion for fitness, but he did not believe at the time he could earn a living in the field. Instead, he prepared for his first pilot interview scheduled for CONTINUED >

September 13, 2001 - needless to say, the interview did not happen. In need of work, Chris applied at a local fitness center and the rest, as they say, is history. In a repeat of his earlier success at his high school gym, Chris started building a following which then gave him the confidence to pitch the idea of a regular fitness segment to a Good Morning Arizona television producer and, eventually, led to ABC and “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss”. By the end of the show’s five-year run in 2015, the show was available in 140 countries around the world and made Chris realize that he needed to be able to reach more people. For the next five years, Chris tried unsuccessfully to explore ways to reach out more people. While he had already reached millions through his television shows, the show format and its popularity limited the number of participants every season. To help more people, he invested in supplements, containers, and even designed a web platform. By 2019, the strain on his family and his marriage became too much. Chris imploded and retreated from life, and everything, to the point where he could no longer even enjoy exercising. Breathing exercises or meditation no longer helped, he needed to seek professional assistance. As so many high-performance athletes

in the last few years have helped us understand, sometimes it is necessary – even if you are at the top of your game. It took a long while to put things back together. By the end of the pandemic, things had gotten better. He felt like himself again. Taking the time to re-evaluate and reflect over the last few years while meditating on top of one of the buttes in the East Valley, Chris realized that he was not alone. At that moment, he realized that he needed something simple to reach out to everyone in Phoenix. Excited, he rushed back home to do some research and came across a documentary about “Rajio Taiso”, a simple way to help millions of people start their day, gently warm up, and get moving. “Move 1 Million” was born! The platform is available to everyone for free. Local leaders, teachers, family members, everyone can sign up and use the app. It is meant to help create an army of heroes to be leaders in their communities. Things are better now, as for the future, Chris is working on a new podcast with Matthew Blade and is currently working on a new app to launch this spring. How missionary work is a big part of one Gilbert family.

A couple of months ago, we introduced you to two brothers: Joshua and Jesse Williams. Being members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints (the Church), the two brothers were at the beginning of a new life changing journey as they were about to embark on their respective mission: one in Baltimore, MD, the other half way across the world in Ethiopia. Like the more than 53,000 full-time missionaries – most of them young adults under the age of 25 – Josh and Jesse are hard at work waking up early, following up on appointments, visiting homes, and meeting people in the street and other public places. Not an easy thing to do when the street doesn’t really exist or the public places are full of goats, judging from some of Josh’s pictures.

Their two sisters, Olivia and Vienna, have similar stories to tell having just returned from their own assigned area. Olivia, closer to home in Washington, DC, was in an area near where her brother Jesse is currently assigned. Similar to her brother Josh, Vienna, on the other hand, was assigned to a more distant location in Uruguay, South America. For Olivia, the transition was not as difficult when she left on her mission. As she remarks: “it was not as big of a deal since I had already been gone for a while” studying away from home in Utah. Vienna, on the other hand, had already started ASU but surprised everyone after deciding to submit her application two months before she turned 19, deciding “that she needed a change in her life”. For the duration, they focused entirely on the work from morning to night, foregoing all entertainment, parties or other activities common to their age-group. While they do have access to modern communication and local assistance from local members of the church, they are limited to one direct call

back home per week (similar to what we all have become used to during COVID) and emails. As Vienna puts it: “I got closer to my parents on my mission than before” since they were able to better understand what she was going through and provide some guidance. An improvement to how things were done before, states Olivia, as the rules were changed shortly before she headed out on her mission. Prior to that, calls were limited to Christmas and Mother’s Day. Each have transforming stories to relate. How Olivia, for instance, had to worked closely for six months with an older gentleman living in the impoverished suburb of Baltimore helping him getting rid of a bad smoking habit and adopting better outlook on life. Or how Vienna shares her story with a particular family having abandoned their faith after the passing of the father and how the son has now decided to get baptized and shares his new found faith with his community. Both made life changing memories and both are happy to be home!

When it comes to love, two people make the perfect match; one who keeps the other safe... and one who keeps the other wild. Arizona, rich in wild west history, is home to Rancho de los Caballeros, a luxe ranch resort in the heart of Wickenburg. It’s an escape for couples looking to reconnect with their wild sides while connecting with nature. Dubbed “Los Cab,” the vast property is located high in the Sonoran Desert, celebrating its 75th anniversary as an Arizona staple. However, many Zonis haven’t heard of the place as most visitors are from out of state. Which leaves me here, divulging AZ’s best-kept secret: the most magical local gem nearly 90 minutes via the Valley. After a busy off-season of upgrades and improvements by its new owners and management team, the ranch is greeting guests with freshly remodeled suites, a renovated dining room, new corral facilities, and a fully updated menu of activities and amenities across the resort. All this, while preserving the Los Cab charm dating 1948.

Saddle up for daily group rides or schedule private excursions journeying your posse through scenic canyons and peaks. Take a roping course, team penning, or Comb & Tack, a one-on-one interaction with pony pals that educate guests on basic horse anatomy, saddling, and brushing the animals. With access to over 20,000 acres, Rancho de los Caballeros is the perfect spot to explore the serene desert on horseback.

ACTIVITIES Ranch life meets swinging for Par at the property’s Los Caballeros Golf Club, built in 1979. The beautifully scenic traditional championship-caliber 18-hole course has new carts and tee markers and over 80 new trees and bushes enhancing play between holes. A complete Golf Clubhouse and restaurant renovation is set to open later this year.

To create this easy and eye-catching centerpiece, collect fallen branches and paint them white. We used a thrifted, repurposed white ceramic jar to assemble the branches in for the base. Use a floral foam to stabilize the branches, and place moss at the top of the jar. You can use this homemade tree for any occasion as it’s sturdy, and just about anything can be hung on it.

Create heart ornaments to hang on your Valentine's Tree Centerpiece. These ornaments can be used as clue cards for a kids Valentine's Day scavenger hunt. You can grab a few pictures with your phone of where treats might be hidden. Instruct your children to find a picture on the tree and hunt for the hidden treasure in the house. We used recycled shipping boxes to create the heart bases and painted them red. We then used a hole punch to create a lace-like edge to complete the look. Pro-Tip: Print your pictures in greyscale to offset the red hearts, attach the images with glue stick, or double stick tape. Print images on heavy-weight paper or card stock to elevate the look of the final ornaments.

When a loved one ages and begins to need more help with daily living tasks, it can be an overwhelming process to open the conversation and consider senior living options. “While most seniors prefer to age in place and remain in their homes, many times this is not realistic any more due to medical issues, decreased mobility, cognitive decline, or just the desire for a more manageable lifestyle,” shares Lauren Miller, owner of Sonoran Senior Placement. As a certified senior advisor, placement and referral specialist, and dementia practitioner, Miller helps local families navigate the process of finding their aging loved one the best senior living situation.

SIGNS A LOVED ONE MAY BE READY FOR SENIOR LIVING OPTIONS Miller says that some signs family members may see that indicate aging loved ones may need to consider senior living options include: • Difficulty managing the household. “This can include bills not being paid, housekeeping and landscaping becoming too hard to maintain, a lack of groceries in the home, or meals not being prepared,” she says. “Moving to an assisted living community will alleviate a lot of these chores and daily stress.” • When their safety is at risk. “When a parent starts to get lost while driving or wandering in the neighborhood and cannot find their way back home, it is probably not safe to continue living at home unattended.” • When there are health concerns. “They may also be forgetting to take medications or dispensing them incorrectly, you may notice their hygiene is declining, weight loss, their sleep schedule suddenly changes, they are starting to repeat questions or becoming more forgetful of day-to-day activities,” she explains.

HOW TO APPROACH THE SENIOR LIVING CONVERSATION Miller acknowledges that the conversation of suggesting assisted living to elderly loved ones can be a hard topic. “Many feel that their independence is being taken from them,” she explains. “I normally have families approach it gently, letting their loved one know that they as family members are no longer capable of physically or emotionally continuing to care for them, especially if they have moved into their adult child's home.” Sometimes families will approach placement with their loved one as a temporary solution, that "if and when" strength returns and improved independence is regained they may be able to return home, Miller adds. “If a family member is living alone prior to the move, I usually have the family members point out the positive changes and easier lifestyle they are about to embrace.”

TYPES OF SENIOR LIVING OPTIONS, AND WHAT TO CONSIDER Miller explains that there are many senior living options available in the Valley. These include independent communities and smaller residential assisted living scenarios. The right place for your loved one depends on their level of care needs—whether they’re independent or need regular caregiving services. Miller says to look for caregivers who are welcoming, friendly and genuinely seem to love their job. “They [the caregivers] need to have an incredible amount of compassion and desire to enhance someone's quality of life up to the end,” she says. “When you walk into a facility you need to observe if the staff looks happy, are they friendly, is it clean, does it smell? During a tour we can ask questions regarding caregiver to resident ratio, the response time for a caregiver to answer the call light or staffing turnover,” she explains. “All facilities are inspected yearly by the health department and these inspection reports are available to us.”
