It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. As a child, one of our beloved family holiday traditions was the annual Christmas light tour. We'd all put on our warmest, coziest pajamas, accompanied by fuzzy socks and slippers. Before embarking on our festive adventure, we'd prepare mugs of hot chocolate, with marshmallows and a dollop of whipped cream. Once we were all bundled up in our PJs and had our hot chocolate in hand, we'd pile into the car. Our favorite holiday playlist provided the perfect background music. As we drove and marveled at the meticulously decorated homes, we shared stories and laughter. These moments of pajamas, hot chocolate, and Christmas lights hold a special place in my heart as a testament to the love and joy the holidays bring to our family. This tradition united us, created lasting memories, and instilled in me a profound appreciation for the simple pleasures of the holiday season. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We would like to introduce you to an amazing business that gives back through tortillas in our community, how a mom took a hobby and turned it into a business, great local cookie options sure to delight Santa, outings to share with the family, and so much more. Autumn is finally upon us. For Arizonans, most of us are celebrating that we survived the scorching summer months and are thrilled to be welcoming temperatures less than 100 degrees. Now it is the time to start embracing our fall traditions and of course eagerly begin preparation for the upcoming holiday season. While spending time with family, friends, and loved ones can bring us many joyous moments, for some of us, it can also bring lots of anxiety as setting healthy boundaries with those we care about can be a daunting task. Pia Mellody, author of Facing Codependence describes boundaries as, invisible and symbolic “force fields” that keep people from coming into our space and abusing us and give each of us a way to embody our sense of “who we are” (p. 11). A few examples of setting healthy boundaries during the holiday season can include saying ‘no’ when we do not want to commit to something, removing ourselves from gatherings to take a break when we feel tired or overwhelmed, and allowing ourselves (and our children) to refuse giving and receiving hugs. If setting these kinds of boundaries with others is challenging for you, you are not alone. Fortunately, improving our boundary systems with others is something we can all improve upon with practice and with the guidance of a trusted mental health professional. Gateway for Cancer Research’s 6th Annual Vino con Stelle Gala Hosted by Dr. Stacie J. and Mr. Richard J Stephenson, Gateway’s Vice Chair and Chairman. The glamourous affair featured celebrity sommelier Anthony Giglio and actress and comedian Caroline Rhea served as emcee. GRAMMY® Award nominee Robin Thicke treated guests to a spectacular performance, and Basketball Hall of Fame member and cancer survivor Spencer Haywood received the Mary Brown Stephenson Award for his work in cancer screening advocacy. You may recognize her from the East Valley Market scene. Having worked as a teacher in the past, Tracy understands the importance of engaging young minds and keeping little hands busy. When she made the decision to step back from teaching full time to focus on her family, the idea for Sweet Little Hands was born. Tracy wanted to continue doing what she loved while spending quality time with her family and helping other families in the process. Tracy, along with her daughters Riley and Randi, can often be found at East Valley Markets, setting up their colorful and interactive sensory bins. These bins are filled with a variety of materials such as sand, water, beans, died corn, rice, cups, water beads, textured toys, and many more designed to engage children’s senses and promote exploration and learning. As families stroll by her booth at the markets, Tracy warmly welcomes them, encouraging children to dive into the bins and discover the wonders within. Many times the kids just want to stay and play the whole time. With her friendly demeanor and genuine passion for early childhood development, Tracy has quickly become a beloved figure in the Gilbert community. Through Sweet Little Hands, Tracy not only provides a source of entertainment for children but also creates a

space for families to bond and connect. Parents and caregivers can be seen joining their little ones in the sensory bins, engaging in meaningful interactions and creating lasting memories. Tracy mentions “One of the many things I love about what we do is seeing the kid’s faces light up when they play with one of our sensory bins and seeing their minds start exploring and learning in so many different ways.” Tracy’s commitment to her own family and the Gilbert community is evident in every aspect of Sweet Little Hands. She carefully selects the materials for the sensory bins, ensuring they are safe, educational, and enjoyable for children of all ages. Tracy also takes the time to educate parents on the benefits of sensory play and offers suggestions on how to incorporate it into their daily routines. Sensory bins are vital for child development. They engage multiple senses, fostering cognitive, social, and emotional growth. Through tactile exploration, kids enhance fine motor skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Sensory play aids in language development and emotional regulation, making it a valuable tool for early learning and holistic development. The Dillons’ deep roots in the Gilbert community have undoubtedly influenced Tracy’s dedication to making a positive impact. Her husband, John, being a sports star at Basha High, is still remembered by many in the community. Meanwhile, his parents, John and Debra Dillon, have been instrumental in transforming the financial and health community in Arizona and beyond. The Dillon family’s love for Arizona is evident through their various endeavors, and Tracy continues this legacy through her work with Sweet Little Hands. Tis the Season for Community Cheer THEATRE GROUP PREPARES FOR ANNUAL A CHRISTMAS CAROL SHOW
The holidays and community go hand in hand much of the time and this year is no different. The Gilbert community is preparing for the holiday season in a variety of ways, including at the Hale Centre Theatre, where everyone is preparing for their annual A Christmas Carol. Jamie Fleischer, Production Assistant at the Hale Centre Theatre, says it is a big on-taking each season. “There are so many actors and so much activity backstage during the show that everything has to be very coordinated to keep things running smoothly.” The community performance is one that local residents look forward to each and every holiday season, with favorite performances and performers returning to the stage for the 2023 show. “We are so excited to have Rob Stuart and Tim Dietlein portray Ebenezer Scrooge once again in our 21st annual production of A Christmas Carol. We have an exciting addition to the show this year; Joey Morrison, previously seen as Bob Cratchit in last year’s production, will also be in the rotation as

our third Ebenezer Scrooge. We have two very talented casts who have been working hard to help bring this beloved story to life.” However, it isn’t just about the actors on the stage, there are a ton of other people who should take credit for this show going off in spectacular fashion each year. Fleischer shares, “As usual, you can expect breathtaking costumes, lighting, special effects, and so much more! We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the amazing crew behind the scenes.” Everyone under the age of 5 is invited to attend the show, but that comes with a small warning for families and parents. “There are a couple of scenes that are youngest audience members might find a bit scary. There is yelling, flashing lights, scary music, and thunder at times, so if this might not be up your kid’s alley, consider another one of our shows for them to experience,” says Fleischer. This is the 21st annual production this year and Fleischer shares that they have some patrons who have come back season after season to see the show in all its delight and glory. For the cast and crew, it is all about bringing the community together to celebrate the joy of the season. “There’s a lot of torment, conflict, and division in the world. We love that this story shows that hearts can change. If people were willing to look at how they lived in the past, soften their hearts and change the future, so many conflicts could be solved.” A Christmas Carol will be playing on Monday through Saturday evenings at 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm, with select 11:00 am and 2:00 pm matinees from November 30th through December 23rd. Christmas on Comstock and Lights on Liberty Lane are two Gilbert streets that take Christmas decorating to the next level as both impressive displays have appeared on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight. Riparian After Dark is an annual holiday event that features thousands of holiday lights and displays along the popular trails of the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch. Enjoy the magic of the holiday season without leaving the comfort of your vehicle with Arizona Lights in the Night in Mesa. Christmas light displays are wonderful ways to spend quality time with friends and family and show your appreciation to the families and organizations that invest their effort into creating something extraordinary for their community.
Riparian After Dark Experience the enchanting holiday magic at Gilbert's annual Riparian After Dark event, brought to you by the Sundt and PCL Construction partnership. Wander through 1.5 miles of scenic trails, adorned with thousands of sparkling lights and festive displays at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch. The event will take place from Friday, December 8 to Tuesday, December 19, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. Holiday treats from local food and drink vendors will also be available for an extra dash of seasonal delight. Tickets are $5 when purchased online and $10 when purchased in person.

Following their spectacular Halloween light show the Richlins family is transitioning from spooky to merry for this year’s Christmas Lights on Liberty Lane. The Richlins have been putting this light show on for 16 years now and it gets updated with new songs and displays each year. Sometimes snacks like popcorn are available as well as some warm and delicious hot chocolate. The lights typically run from 6-10 p.m. daily. Check their Facebook page for more information.
This neighborhood is quite the spectacle during the holiday season, attracting visitors from all over the state. In previous years, the animated light show has featured 13 homes and 110,000 lights. The light show is synchronized with music and guests can listen by tuning in to 88.1 FM. They also accept donations for the Make a Make-a-Wish Foundation and sometimes Santa stops by to visit and take pictures. Christmas on Comstock usually runs from December 1 to December 31 and is available for viewing 6-10 p.m. on weekdays and 6-10:30 p.m. on weekends. Drive about 5 miles north of Gilbert to Mesa for Arizona Lights in the Night, a drive-thru holiday light show with over a million lights and life-size candy canes, snowmen and Christmas trees galore. The event is available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from Friday, December 1 to Sunday, December 31. The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
