In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages us to show gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and achieving our goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those who have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. Sometimes we go through life looking at the next thing on our to-do list and not taking the time to reflect on what is really important. I am a person who likes a good to-do list checked off for sure, but recently so many things have made me stop in my tracks, take a breath and reflect. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community it is. We are incredibly thankful for our community partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season, as we prepare to gather with our loved ones and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. If I have learned anything these past couple of months it is to cherish the life you are given and not to forget to live your life!

Grief is a complicated, overwhelming, and often misunderstood process.

Grief is not just the death of a loved one. We can experience grief in the end of relationships, loss of jobs, medical trauma, or any circumstance where life does not go as planned. Every grief is unique and everyone grieves differently, however most people identify with the Six Stages of Grief developed by Dr. David Kessler. An individual may experience them in any order, fluctuate between them, or find themselves stuck in one stage. If you are facing a traumatic loss, allowing yourself to move through each phase can help you make sense of your emotions and ultimately come to terms with the loss and the new life you must build.

Kessler’s Six Stages of Grief: • Denial: The loss feels surreal. This helps us survive the loss by pacing other emotions which would be too overwhelming to experience all at once. • Anger: The loss is unjust and unfair. This is the surface emotion for other emotions, often reflecting the intensity of our love for what was lost. • Bargaining: The “if onlys’ and experiences of guilt or blame. This is our attempt to alter tragic events and negotiate a way out of the hurt. • Depression: The normal and appropriate response to a deep loss. This allows us to slow down to explore our sadness and really process the loss. • Acceptance: Recognizing and learning to live with the new and permanent reality of the loss. This is where we come to terms with what has been so painful. Meaning - Turning tragedy into an occasion for growth and finding a renewed purpose for life after a loss. Author: Ema Grant, MS, LPC

The fall season has people dreaming of holidays and get togethers. As we head into the holidays, many valley residents may be on the search for some great wines to enjoy with friends and family during this season of sharing. Across the state, we have several great Arizona wines and wineries for locals to check out. There are several other options when it comes to Arizona wines this holiday season, so if these aren’t what you are looking for, know there are plenty of other selections. Carlson Creek Vineyard Established in 2008, Carlson Creek Vineyard is a family-owned spot that is located in southeastern Arizona. The vineyard has grown to become the third largest vineyard in Arizona. If you don’t want to make the trek down to Willcox, don’t worry, there is a tasting room right here in the east valley, located in Scottsdale. The vineyard produces a number of varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Malvasia Bianca, Muscat, Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, Mourvèdre and Grenache Rosé. Merkin Vineyards + Caduceus Cellars Rocker and now wine-maker extraordinaire Maynard James Keenan recently opened a vineyard in Cottonwood, overlooking the Verde Valley, the Caduceus Cellars Hilltop Facility & VSC Ventura Room and Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria encompass a new winery and cellar, tasting room, restaurant, and retail space, food production greenhouse, gelateria, and a vineyard set in the heart of historic Old Town Cottonwood. Originally founded in 2004, Caduceus Cellars and Merking Vineyards make wines out of Italian and Spanish varieties, producing about 8000 cases a year. The new location, Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria is open daily Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Details and information are available online at merkinvineyardsosteria.com.

LDV Winery This local spot has been in business for 15 years and all of their grapes are grown right here in Arizona, not from other locations. They have several events happening at their Scottsdale location at 7134 E. Stetson Boulevard. They will have charcuterie classes as well as Le Nez Du Vin, which is Wine Aroma Therapy, a unique curated wine experience. There are several award-winning wines available at the LDV Winery Tasting room, where guests can enjoy a wine fight, a glass of wine, or a bottle of their favorite wine. They can also purchase LDV wines on the spot or order them for shipping online at ldvwinery.com. If you plan to visit the tasting room with a group larger than six people, reservations are required ahead of time. You can call 480-664-4822 for questions and reservations.

AZ Wine Wagon Looking for something a little different to check out wineries across the state, be sure to check out AZ Wine Wagon. They offer day trips from Scottsdale to Verde Valley, where it stops at 3 prominent wineries in the region. The mobile business was created to give people a unique AZ wine tour experience from beginning to end. Guests will get a full day of exploring the Verde Valley’s wine country, a great option to check out Arizona local wines, without having to worry about driving. Guests book a seat on the bus tour, get on at 9:00 a.m. in the morning at the Scottsdale pickup location, travel to three wineries, spending an hour and a half at each spot, and then get back on the bus for the ride home. The entire trip takes about 9 hours to complete with travel time. A single seat on the bus costs $99, but that does not include the cost of wine tastings at each stop. Guests will pay for those individually at the wineries and it is suggested that you pack a lunch or plenty of snacks to eat along the way. Reservations are required and you can book tickets online at azwinewagon.com.

For people living with Down Syndrome, it can often be difficult to find places to work, go to school, and socialize. However, thanks to the kindness and passion from one valley resident, there is a special place for them to let loose and enjoy life. Looking back over time, it isn’t hard for Carol Tingey to pinpoint where things changed for her, for what she calls the absolute better. What she quickly found out is that it became so much more than she could have ever imagined. “I quickly learned it would be very different than I expected, I was the one who was taught and served by them. Many people in that class became dear friends to me and several of them, over 40 years later, are still in my life today.” These students she was just there to mentor have become part of her family’s lives and for that, Tingey says she is eternally grateful. Years went by and after raising her own children, Carol decided to return to the life of working with people with Down Syndrome, but she wasn’t quite sure where to start. After giving it some thought, she realized that she wanted to start dance classes for her friends. “They all love music and dancing so much,” shares Tingey. “It started as just a way to get them together, helping to add some fun and friendships. I have seen that when my friends with Down syndrome age out of high school it’s harder for them to find classes that work. It’s harder to have social circles and fitness.” That passion to bring everyone together evolved and Tingey created Hip Hop Homies (with Xtra Chromies). Upon creation, Tingey felt she was exactly where she needed to be. “Purposes were filled. The Homies have loved dancing together, being together, and being a team.” Not only do they take classes together, but they also get the opportunity to perform at some really cool venues. “We perform many places like, high school assemblies, Suns/Mercury games, fairs, Special Olympics, weddings, and more.”

While Tingey says participating in all of these fun activities, she finds that the group enjoys when they can help youth of the valley meet the group and not only see them dance, but learn more about living with Down Syndrome and helping younger valley residents realize what amazing people the Homies are.” When Tingey began the group five years ago, she wasn’t sure where it would lead or how it would grow. She also didn’t realize the lives and hearts that would be touched by this simple dance group. “From typical youth volunteers to audience members to families of our Homies and most importantly, for the Homies themselves, I’ve seen ignorance change to understanding, friendships made, support and help and belonging achieved. That has been so rewarding. I love people learning what I got to learn when I was in high school, and I love seeing the Homies so happy to have a community.” One of the biggest challenges that Tingey has found that while she wants to keep adding classes, giving more and more people the opportunity to participate, it takes financial backing to be able to do that. What that meant was she had to get creative. “So, I got organized and started a non-profit called The Home of the Homies. There is more we can do for these adults besides more dance classes, so we are always looking for ways to raise money and make that happen.” For Tingey, the non-profit is there to help provide her friends with a place where they can find fitness, fun and fulfillment. From turkey pot pie to pumpkin, caramel apple and French cherry crumble, the piefectionists have something for everyone this holiday season. It has four East Valley locations including Scottsdale, Chandler, Mesa and a new location in Queen Creek. Customers can pre-order for pickup or delivery or head to one of its locations the days leading up to Thanksgiving and pick from the 70-plus pie flavors in-store.

Show your friends and family you have superior tastes this Thanksgiving by getting your pies from Pie Snob. This pie shop has locations in Chandler, Arcadia, and Uptown. They will be offering a variety of pies this November. Caramel apple pecan, pumpkin praline, green chile apple crumb and pumpkin ginger snap are just four of the 17 pies offered on its November menu. The deadline for special orders is Monday, November 13 or until it has reached maximum capacity. It will be open Tuesday, November 21 and Wednesday, November 22 for special order pickups.

It is the season of giving and for many of us, it is time to look for the best ways to give back to our community. Now, there is a very cool way for people to give back with donations, where 100% of the donation is given to charity. The Giving Machine is a vending machine where you can donate to a selected charity that aims to help someone in need. Basically, it works just like any other vending machine. You swipe your credit card, but rather than buying something for yourself, you are really buying much needed and perhaps life-saving items for those in need. Community Leader Fran Lowder, who is helping to organize the program in the valley, shares that there is an application process for charities in the region and once the charity is selected from the application process, they will be told about the participation. 100% of the proceeds will go to these local charities, and it isn’t just happening in Gilbert. The vending machines are in more than 50 locations worldwide, 7 of which will be located across the valley. We are the only state according to Lowder with more than 2 locations. The Gilbert machines are located at Hale Theater and the water tower across the street. The local machines will be live on November 17th and will run until January 1st. The Giving Machines make it easy to support global and local charities that provide those in need with items such as clothing, eyeglasses, medicine, personal hygiene supplies, sports equipment, wheelchairs, and much more. Across the world, it is expected thousands of people will use the machines, translating to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Arroz Chaufa Our delicious take on Peruvian Fried Rice is a perfect way to use up leftover turkey, plus you'll have this meal on the table in under 20 minutes, so it's the perfect easy dinner during the busy holiday season.

I N G R E D IE N T S • 2 Tbs sesame oil • 1 bunch green onion , chopped, (divided into greener and whiter parts) • 1 bell pepper , diced • 2 hot dogs • 2 eggs , beaten • 2 garlic cloves • 1 tablespoon ginger root , grated • 1 cup cooked and shredded chicken • 4 cups pre-cooked, cold rice • 2-3 Tablespoons soy sauce (more or less to taste)

DIRECTIONS • Preheat a large skillet or wok to medium heat. Pour sesame oil in the bottom. • Add hot dogs, onion, and bell pepper. Add garlic and ginger. • Slide to the side, and pour the beaten eggs onto the other side. Using a spatula, scramble the eggs. • Once cooked, mix the eggs with the vegetable mix. • Add the rice and chicken to the veggie and egg mixture. Pour the soy sauce on top. Stir and fry the rice and veggie mixture until heated through and combined. • Season with additional salt, if needed, to taste.

Smothered Burritos INGREDIENTS Turkey filling • 3 cups cooked chicken • 1 1/2 cups salsa • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves • 1 1/4 cups shredded cheddar cheese • 2 green onions • 6 large flour tortillas • olive oil Green Chile Sauce • 3 Tablespoons butter • 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 clove garlic , minced • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth • 1/2 teaspoon cumin • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 4 ounces diced green chilies , mild • 1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese • 1/2 cup sour cream

• Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Make the filling • Mix chicken, salsa, cumin, oregano, cheese and onions. Place a heaping ½ cup or so of the chicken mixture in the center of each tortilla. • Fold the sides of the tortilla in and roll up tightly like a burrito. Place seam-side down on baking sheet. Brush lightly with olive oil or spray with non stick cooking spray. • Bake at 400°F for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Make the sauce • Prepare sauce by melting butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once melted and bubbling, whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly for about 3 minutes. Add minced garlic and stir for 30 seconds. Gradually whisk in chicken broth. Add cumin, oregano, and a dash of salt and pepper and cook, stirring, until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in green chilies, cheese and sour cream. Broil • Remove burritos from oven and turn the oven to HIGH broil. Turkey and Dumplings Take our favorite chicken and dumpling soup recipe and add leftover turkey instead!

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 celery , ribs, diced 2 carrots , large, diced 1 yellow onion , chopped 1 clove garlic , minced 5 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 6 cups low-sodium chicken broth 4 teaspoons chicken bouillon paste , better than bouillon base* 1/4 teaspoon each dried thyme, dried sage, dried rosemary 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs , or chicken breasts* 12 oz evaporated milk , canned ½ cup frozen peas fresh chopped parsley , for garnish

For the Dumplings • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 3/4 cup milk • ¼ cup sour cream • 2 Tablespoons butter , melted

DIRECTIONS Sauté Veggies • Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add oil. Once hot, add celery, carrots and onion and sauté for 3 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds. Add butter and flour and whisk well for 1 minute. Add Broth and Seasonings • Gradually stir in the chicken broth and bouillon, scraping up anything stuck to the bottom of the pot. Add thyme, sage, rosemary, salt and pepper.

TASTES BETTER FROM SCRATCH

• Add chicken and bring mixture to a boil. Cover the pot with a lid, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through. Remove chicken to a cutting board and rest for 5 minutes before chopping or shredding into small pieces. Return chicken to the pot and add evaporated milk and peas. Make Dumplings • Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Make a well in the center and add milk, sour cream and melted butter. Stir until combined, but don’t over mix. Add Dumplings • Bring soup to a simmer and then use a small spoon to drop teaspoon-sized amounts of dough all over the top of the simmering soup (the dumplings will double in size as they cook). • Cover the pot and simmer on low for 12-15 minutes. Remove lid, gently stir to break dumplings apart, and scoop out a dumpling to check for doneness. If still doughy, cover and cook for a few more minutes, until tender. Taste and adjust seasonings if desired. • Serve warm, with a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley on top.

JustServe.org is a platform that makes it easy for individuals and groups to find and participate in local service projects. It features a variety of service groups including non-profit, faithbased, school, government and community organizations offering a wide range of projects and volunteer opportunities. What sets JustServe.org apart is its commitment to accessibility. The user-friendly interface makes the site easy to navigate so you can find service opportunities based on your location, time commitment and type of work. The kind of work can include working with animals, seniors, children, the homeless community, and more. It also posts remote projects, so you can volunteer without leaving the comfort of your home. It posts opportunities for everyone and encourages volunteers to serve in all kinds of work. The best part is that the platform is free for both volunteers and the organizations that post the opportunities. JustServe.org’s dedication to accessibility and inclusivity reinforces its mission of community service.

While grand service gestures may capture headlines, JustServe.org recognizes that even small, local efforts can lead to significant change. By engaging with communities on a grassroots level, individuals can collectively pave the way for broader changes. The platform knows they may not solve world hunger immediately, but it knows that serving side-by-side with your community, learning from each other and creating friendships while making a positive difference in your area can have a domino effect on other communities and spread little by little until the positive difference is felt on a state, national or local scale. These figures are just one way to demonstrate JustServe.org’s global impact and how effective it is at mobilizing volunteers and connecting them with meaningful causes. In 2023, Gilbert witnessed the remarkable impact of JustServe.org through various initiatives. In the month of September over 5,500 volunteers gathered to provide service and donations for more than 30 initiatives to honor the 9/11 Day of Service. These projects included creating 500 care kits for cancer patients, various clothing and food drives, cleaning up alleys in Gilbert and much more. The organizations benefitted during this day of service were A New Leaf, American Red Cross, Starbright Foundation, House of Refuge, Meals on Wheels, Primary Children’s Hospital, ASA Now, Jose’s Closet and more. JustServe.org recorded more

than 7,000 volunteer hours that day, showing just how instrumental the organization is in fostering a culture of service. Aside from the extraordinary service provided in September, Gilbert saw some other amazing work done earlier this year. In April, 10-year-old Evan Vowles found a food pantry on JustServe that was low on jelly. He then began collecting jelly and got the word out so far and wide that he ended up donating 700 jars of jelly to the Open Arms Care Center in Gilbert. In February, JustServe supported the Gilbert Feeding Families Food Drive. It collected more than 30,000 lbs of food and $18,972 in cash donations at the 29 donation sites. The collections during this drive provided approximately 130,920 meals to those in need. The platform also has 14 specialists in the Town of Gilbert, dedicated to supporting the community and helping organizations post their projects on the website. This platform stands as a testament to the power of community-driven service. By providing a place for volunteers to connect with local projects, it empowers individuals and groups to make a difference. From the smallest acts of kindness to large-scale initiatives, every effort contributes to building a better world starting by building a better Gilbert.
