Welcome Fall!

With the arrival of the coziest season, our cravings take a delightful twist, and as autumn rolls in, it's all about embracing comfort food with a side of sparkle! Crafting a dish that not only tantalizes our taste buds but also stirs up cherished memories is truly an art. Those captivating aromas and flavors can transport us back to the days of our childhood, wrapping us in a warm, comforting embrace. Food has this magical way of bringing us all together, whether we're bonding over a meal with loved ones or savoring a night out on the town—these moments are simply priceless.

October is like our scrumptious, can't-miss dessert of the year, packed with mouthwatering dishes and drinks from the hottest spots in town. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the chef at Humble Bistro, and learned about what their fall menu will be boasting—so get your taste buds ready, you are in for a treat.

This month we also had the honor of visiting with someone that has been in many of our homes every weekday for over a decade.  We hope you enjoy learning a little more about Syleste Rodriguez, the morning News Anchor of Phoenix Fox 10.  We certainly had fun getting to know her and now are lucky enough to call Syleste our friend.

Fall is a fantastic time for road trips, with the changing leaves and cooler weather adding to the beauty of the journey.  Nadine and the boys headed North to Utah to share an unforgettable fall break adventure.  Sundance, Utah is a beautiful and peaceful place. It can be an excellent opportunity for you to connect with nature and explore the great outdoors.   They really know how to make the most of that short drive that seems like worlds away.

Gosh, there is so much more packed in this issue, I hope you find something that makes you smile.  As the scents of fall fill the air, it's like a sweet trip down memory lane for me, reminiscent of sitting in my mom's kitchen. The fragrance of cinnamon, apple, pumpkin, chili, and all sorts of cookies whisks me right back to her welcoming table.

As always, thank you for reading this month’s issue and we can't wait to share more delicious discoveries with you!

See you in town, lovely foodies!

Celebrating Hometown Heritage With Style

MEET SYLESTE RODRIGUEZ WITH FOX PHOENIX

A sense of style with an amazing smile. That is how many could describe FOX 10 Phoenix anchor Syleste Rodriguez, who has been a staple on air here in the valley for years. When it comes to living in Arizona, Rodriguez is very proud of her heritage and ties to the Grand Canyon State. “My family has been in the East Valley for a long time, since before Arizona was a state.  We are one of the first five families of Tempe, and in fact, our story is in the Tempe Historical Museum. My Tata and I spent many hours talking about the early days of the Valley over breakfast on Saturday mornings.”

When you catch Rodriguez on air, one of the things you might notice is her fashionable sense of style. “I would call my personal style Mom Trendy,” says Rodriguez. “My closet is full of work dresses and suits I haven’t worn in years. Instead, after work, you’ll likely find me in running shorts or joggers and a workout tank as I race to grab the kids from school.”

When it comes to looks on the air, Rodriguez keeps it pretty simple. “I wear mostly business dresses in the studio.  I have one-piece pant suits I like too; it means less work because then I don’t have to take time to find matching outfits.” And for inspiration, she looks towards more timeless and classic pieces to add to her wardrobe. “I try to keep it elegant for work in the studio, but I love bold colors. It’s fun and feels good to wear bright

pinks and yellows, colors that pop on television and make me feel happy.”

When she isn’t in the studio, Rodriguez spends time with her husband of 17 years and her three children, ages 16, 13, and 11. It isn’t just the kids either; Rodriguez also has two dogs, Australian Shepherds named Jack and Gracie. For her, life focuses mainly on family. “I was raised by a single mom; she raised my sister and me on her own,” shares Rodriguez. “Family is a gift, so I try and soak up all the Motherhood I can. On any given afternoon, you’ll find me running our girls from soccer practice to training and our son to and from football and baseball.  My husband is a huge help, and we tackle the job together.  I love being a mom, wife, and family means everything.”

One of the things she loves to do with her family is eat and enjoy the variety of restaurants around the valley. However, just like any one of us, Rodriguez has favorite spots to revisit time and time. “One of my favorites has got to be Someburros. I love, love, love their Horchata and shredded beef tacos. Grew up eating that food, and it is so good.” When she isn’t dining out, you can find Rodriguez in the kitchen, cooking up just about anything. She shares that she would launch a salsa business if she had more time. And that’s not all. “I’d love to learn how to sew kitchen aprons, those cute ones with tutus or ones maybe Barefoot Contessa would wear in the Hamptons.”

Rodriguez is certainly a hometown gal through and through, growing up in Tempe and having attended Arizona State University. She persevered after not originally being accepted into the Cronkite Journalism School, and eventually was accepted into the program, and even won a Collegiate Pulitzer with some of the work she created during her senior year. “Those accolades helped me land my first job in Boise, which led me down the path that brought me back home. I teach now at ASU in the Cronkite School because it was a teacher who helped me find my own way.”

Unveiling Gilbert's Treasured Tequila

Discover the story behind Gilbert local, Debbie Gach and her tequila company

National Tequila Day has come and gone, but there is never a wrong time to celebrate and enjoy a fantastic tequila. Just ask Gilbert resident Debbie Gach, who and her late husband Jonathan co-founded Señor Rio tequila to honor her father.

Debbie shares that the idea behind the brand started on a rocky road but is undoubtedly a labor of love. “The story starts after 30 years of no communication until my father reached out unexpectedly in 2006. Not sure I was ready to see him, Jonathan encouraged me to go.

That's when we embarked on a journey that changed our lives forever,” says Gach. “Emotions flowed as we sipped his homemade tequila, a secret recipe spanning three generations—no label, just a simple bottle, connecting us as a family. Surprisingly, no hangover followed our hours-long indulgence. The reason was all-natural ingredients, and that's when the idea for Señor Rio tequila became a reality.”

Taking a giant leap of faith, the pair left their careers to bring the tequila dream to reality, and 14 years since

its inception, Señor Rio is one of the top tequila spirits in the world. “Our success speaks volumes. We've grown organically, driven by our unparalleled taste and timeless presentation. True to the original recipe we discovered while reuniting with my father,” says Gach.

One of the most incredible things about Señor Rio Tequila is the company’s mission to give back to the community. In 2020, the team created the We Care Crusade, a non-profit created to make a difference in the lives of children with special needs, one child and one family at a time. For Gach, it holds a special place in her heart. "It is dedicated to my beautiful twin granddaughters facing challenges of cerebral palsy, Angelman syndrome, and autism.”

Then, an unexpected encounter with a friend brought in a new partner to the mix, actor Joe Mantegna. Their connection was immediate. Both hail from Chicago, with two daughters of their own and one of Mantegna’s daughters with special needs; the two quickly realized they were a good fit for this excellent brand. “Tequila with a cause became our shared passion! Not only are we raising awareness for Señor Rio, but we’re also doing the same for We Care Crusade. Together, we are dedicated, committed, and focused.”

Mantegna also quickly realized that their connection was much more than a business connection, one that was indeed a blessing overall. “I love everything about this brand. The spirits are an example of tequila made in the most authentic way

possible, and the quality speaks for itself,” says Mantegna. “Also, the story behind Debbie and how this company came about made it a no-brainer for me in terms of wanting to be involved.”

The tequila itself is set apart from others for a few reasons, says Gach. “Señor Rio Tequila is crafted with love and a family heritage, not in a corporate boardroom. It's a traditional three-generation family recipe with no additives, artificial flavors, or coloring.” The tequila is ultra-premium, small-batch, and has received many awards. The bottles come with tequila and have a special message that reads, “Sharing tequila.. Is sharing life,” encouraging people to share it with friends and family.

For the We Care Crusade, the gift is simple. As a small foundation, they fund the endeavors by selling the Señor Rio tequila nationwide, donating one dollar for every bottle sold.  For Mantegna, the passion behind the tequila and foundation struck at the heart of it all for him. “Becoming part owner of a tequila company was not something I actively pursued, but I’ve often found that the most rewarding gifts one receives in life come unexpected. I’m thrilled to be involved with Debbie, Señor Rio, and their mission, and I will do everything I can to help this company with a heart move forward now and in the future.”

Señor Rio tequila is available exclusively at Total Wine and More stores nationwide. Visit senorrio.com and wecarecrusade. org for more information.

WELCOME TO HUMBLE BISTRO

Step into a world where flavor reigns supreme, and every bite is an adventure. Curated by the visionary Chef Jorge Gomez, the menu at Humble Bistro takes you on a culinary journey that will redefine your perception of taste, where innovation meets tradition and creativity knows no bounds thanks to the culinary chemistry of its founder.

MEET CHEF JORGE GOMEZ

Chef Jorge Gomez's culinary odyssey traces back to his grandmother's kitchen in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, where his passion for cooking ignited as he assisted in crafting classic Mexican delicacies like tamales, tortillas, and chocolates. These early encounters fueled his curiosity and charted his course toward becoming a masterful chef.

Gomez's formal training commenced at the prestigious L'Olivier, a French restaurant in Mexico City. Working alongside talented chefs, he sharpened his skills and cultivated a profound admiration for the artistry and precision of French cuisine. Eager to broaden his culinary horizons, he enrolled at the Culinary Institute of Mexico in Puebla, immersing himself in a rigorous program encompassing various culinary techniques and cuisines.

Graduating with distinction, Chef Gomez embarked on an epicurean expedition to refine his craft and embrace diverse culinary traditions. His journey took him across Mexico and Europe, apprenticing in various kitchens and acquiring wisdom from esteemed chefs. A noteworthy chapter unfolded during his internship as a pastry chef at Hostal de La Gavina in Spain, where he worked with top-tier ingredients and delved into the intricacies of pastry making.

These multifaceted experiences and exposure to different gastronomic cultures shaped Chef Gomez's distinct culinary style. His portfolio showcases a harmonious fusion of Mexican flavors and techniques entwined with international influences, yielding an innovative and exhilarating approach to cooking.

As the executive chef at Humble Bistro, Chef Jorge Gomez continues to manifest his ardor for the culinary arts and unwavering commitment to excellence. Renowned for his expertise in both global and local cuisine, Gomez has developed a signature style known as New American Cuisine, seamlessly melding locally sourced ingredients with traditional and contemporary cooking methods from diverse cultures.

CULINARY CHEMISTRY

Chef Gomez describes the taste profile at Humble Bistro as "new world flavors," a fusion of various cultural influences from Italian, American, Spanish, French, and Mexican cuisines. This integration of ingredients and techniques creates a dining experience that evokes nostalgia and leaves a lasting impression on the taste buds, as seen across the menu at Humble Bistro, which showcases the diversity of flavors, offering dishes that pay homage to each culture while incorporating Chef Gomez's unique touch.

From delectable small plates and hearty mains to indulgent desserts, every dish is prepared with meticulous attention to detail and a passion for creating memorable dining experiences that anyone can enjoy (there are no kids menus here, as the belief of family style is foundationally laid in dishes that both the young and old can enjoy).

Additionally, the wine selection at Humble Bistro is carefully curated, offering a wide range of options from around the world. The extensive wine list complements the diverse flavors of the menu, allowing guests to pair their meals with the perfect wine to enhance their dining experience.

A standout dish at Humble Bistro that promises to convert even the most skeptical mushroom eaters is the Cremini Sachetti. This delectable creation features fresh handmade stuffed pasta filled with roasted cremini mushrooms and cheese, all bathed in a luscious brown butter, truffle.

EXPERIENCE THE RUSTIC CHARM OF SUNDANCE MOUNTAIN RESORT FOR YOUR FALL BREAK DESTINATION

A WILD WEST ESCAPE JUST NEXT DOOR

ACCOMMODATIONS

Fit for a family, the Mountain Loft is a spacious set-up flaunting a full kitchen, living room with sleeper sofa, and loft with double beds. Dressed in western flare, kids will love climbing the loft ladder to their “private upper level,” and parents will appreciate the private master bedroom. With all the amenities of home- washer/dryer included- enjoy a cozy fireplace and hang-worthy balcony set among towering trees.

ACTIVITIES

Arizona is known for its Wild West persona, and rightfully so. Many Zonis are fans of cowboy culture and quite familiar with famed outlaws such as Butch Cassidy. Well, if you want to experience the birthchild of Cassidy’s legacy, head next-door to the state of Utah, where you’ll find the perfect spot to escape and experience the rustic charm of Sundance Mountain Resort, rich in activities, eclectic dining and a breathtaking ambiance.

In 1963, Robert Redford bought two acres of land in Provo Canyon. The price: $500. Redford then morphed the resort to span over 500 spectacular acres, and the first-class destination soon became one of the top-rated ski spots in the United States. However, fall, spring and summers at Sundance are just as magical. Named after Redford’s role in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” sits the secluded, welcoming, simplistic retreat. Should the mountains call your name, the charming destination will fill your mind, body, and soul.

Here’s how to experience the non-snowy months of Utah’s crown jewel.

Known for an abundance of trout amidst a stunning, scenic backdrop, Sundance offers a world-class fly-fishing experience for newbiesto-pros. Brian, the resort’s fishing guru and buddies with Bob (aka, Mr. Redford), will suit you up in full wading gear and you’ll learn to cast, mend, and catch. It’s a lesson of patience and perseverance, and the feeling of reeling one in is of utter fulfillment. The Provo River is one of the best in the country due to easy access and 4,000 fish per mile.

The Sundance ZipTour is dubbed one of the most exciting and scenic ziplines in the United States, boasting over 2,100 feet of vertical drop - the most of any zip tour in the country. Riders can zip side-by-side on the double cables and control their speed, cruising up to 65 miles per hour. Embrace your fearless, adventurous side and savor the most magnificent views via a bird’s eye.

Foster your creative spirit and partake in a class at the property’s esteemed art studio offering workshops in jewelry making, wheelthrown pottery, soapmaking, watercolor, and more. Curated classes are available for kids through adults.

ARTICLE AND
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | TRAVEL 38

Located in the wonderous Wasatch Range, the Sundance Stables are ideal for cruising the terrain via horseback. Enjoy breathtaking scenery as you traverse through pristine terrain while your cowboy guide leads your four-legged transport through aspen groves and alpine meadows.

Arguably one of the coolest hikes you’ll ever do is Stewart Falls. Family friendly and totally surreal, you’ll hike through dense forests and flowery meadows until reaching the falls where you can immerse yourself in the cool mist of the water. Refreshing and revitalizing, prep to get wet and indulge in an experience you’ll never forget. The property is also known for over 10 miles of alpine trails with terrain options for both beginners and experienced hikers.

In winter, the chairlifts are packed with skiers... but when the snow melts, you can experience panoramic views of the mountain as you glide to the top of Mandan Summit on Outlaw Express. The scenic lifts provide views of black diamond runs sometimes utilized by Olympic athletes. Along the ride, search for wildlife, and if you make it to the top of Red’s Lift, enjoy lunch at Bearclaw Cabin, an eatery known for brew and nachos. If you’re lucky, you might spot Sundance staff training their avalanche dogs, the search and rescue pups bred with hunting roots and a knack for heroism. They often frequent the lifts to prep for their winter duties working along ski patrollers to keep the mountains safe.

CONTINUED > 39 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/GILBERT OCTOBER 2023

The resort offers a dreamy summer theatre tradition dating 1970. Set beneath the shadow of Mount Timpanogos, you’ll endure an enchanting experience atop the lawns of Sundance’s grandiose amphitheater once home to 10,000+ people watching Willie Nelson. There, you’ll catch impressive live performances of shows like “Sound of Music,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Mama Mia,” and more.

DINING

The Tree Room is Sundance’s most acclaimed restaurant, serving some of the best cuisine in state. Tables are surrounded by kachina dolls, pottery, and photos from Redford’s private collection and films. The comfortable yet exclusive dining experience overlooks large windows to facilitate natural lighting nature views. The dining philosophy incorporates modern French techniques with American comfort in a comfortable setting. Serving three meals daily, The Foundry Grill offers farm to fresh dishes flaunting seasonal flare. With a rotating menu of curated dishes, diners will leave with overly pleased pallets and full bellies. It’s a great spot for family gatherings.

Finally, for nighttime sipping and listening to live music, find yourself a seat at the Owl Bar, once frequented by Butch Cassidy. The restored 1890s hot spot was moved from Wyoming to Utah and is now a favorite staple of Sundance.

Delicious Dining at Honey & Vine

EXPLORING GILA RIVER RESORTS & CASINOS - SANTAN MOUNTAIN'S UNIQUE NEW RESTAURANT

Agave citrus glazed salmon, served with wild rice with roasted corn, squash, and pecans, smoked beurre blanc, and petite greens. Lemon ricotta pancakes, topped with whipped honey butter, macerated seasonal berries, and maple syrup. Honey whipped feta, accompanied by herbroasted olives and toasted sourdough.

These are just a few of the many delicious dishes available at Honey + Vine, located in Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Santan Mountain.

As Public Relations Manager Daniela Vizcarra notes, Honey + Vine, which opened in July, is an entirely new concept that is not available at any of the other three properties.

“Giving our guests a blend of ‘sophistication meets your everyday breakfast hangout’ was very important to us,” she says, adding that the “upscale yet approachable” restaurant offers dining service for breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner, along with a walk-up coffee bar, patio, and bar.

“It is open to all guests for a quick cup of coffee, or you can reserve the private dining room.”

What makes Honey + Vine unique, Vizcarra says, is its farm-to-table approach, with menu items that feature locally grown and sourced food.

“Many of the ingredients, including beans, honey, and olive oil, are sourced directly from Gila River Farms,” Vizcarra says. “We take so much pride in every dish we craft, and involving the Gila River Indian Community’s farm was such a special experience for us.”

Honey + Vine also prides itself on its meats and chops—specifically the pulled rotisserie chicken and shaved prime rib.

For breakfast, diners can select from a variety of dishes, including the You Do You Omelet made with three eggs and a choice of three fillings, or Soft Poached Eggs Benedict on toasted English muffins with shaved prosciutto, avocado, and hollandaise, served with breakfast potatoes.

Several salads and entrees are available at lunch, Vizcarra says, adding that the Pulled Rotisserie Chicken Sandwich with applewood smoked bacon, pepper jack cheese, avocado, pickled red onion, arugula, and smoky house adobo on toasted sourdough is already a favorite among guests.

Dinner offers options for any size appetite, including starters, salads, and entrees, like the 7-ounce filet mignon served with Yukon whipped potatoes, roasted mushrooms, sautéed spinach and kale, and red wine butter.

Guests with a sweet tooth can satisfy their cravings with a variety of desserts, including the Summer Strawberry Shortcake, Warm Peach Crisp, New York Style Cheesecake, or Chocolate Mousse Trifle.

The extensive beverage menu includes sodas, coffee, iced tea, juice, wine by the glass or bottle, craft cocktails, pressed juice cocktails, and a wide selection of beers.

A new brunch menu was unveiled on Sept. 1, and Vizcarra says the restaurant plans to update the menu throughout the holidays with special seasonal dishes and cocktails.

She adds that a live DJ will also play music during special occasions.

Even though Honey + Vine has not been open long, Vizcarra says business is already going very well. “Our guests are loving the new variety in dishes we offer. We have many regular customers already, and it’s nice to see them get excited to continue to discover their new favorite dishes.”

Honey + Vine is open daily for breakfast from 8-11 a.m. and for lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and dinner is served Sundays through Thursdays from 4-10 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays from 4-11 p.m. PlayAtGila.com/dining-nightlife/honey-vine

Embracing Change: Practical Tips for Dealing With Uncertainty

Change can be many things, but it is undeniably inevitable. While it can be associated with positive feelings and excitement, change is often accompanied by feelings of uncertainty, which can lead to increased anxiety during already challenging times. Learning to cope with these feelings is a valuable tool that can ultimately improve your overall mental health.

Focus on what you can control. Many people feel out of control during times of change. Direct your energy towards the elements that you do have influence over. Make an effort to maintain any part of your routine, regardless of how minor it may seem. This might look like keeping your same morning or night time routine( coffee, reading, meditation) or fitting in your regular workout.

Try a perspective shift. Reframing change as an opportunity for growth, a chance to learn new skills, and gain some insight about your own inner strength and ability to adapt can empower you to feel more in control and thrive in challenging and uncertain times. Ask questions such as “What can I learn from this?” or “How can I approach this in a different way?” Seek support and avoid isolation. Staying connected to friends, family, and even seeking professional help can be extremely beneficial when faced with change and life transitions. This can be a valuable way to obtain the perspective shift stated above.

Lastly, give yourself grace and acknowledge that these situations come with a mix of emotions and that is normal. You are stronger than you think and you are resilient enough to make it through any change that comes your way.

Elevated Grilled Cheese

THE FLAVOR OF FALL CREATES AN UNFORGETTABLE TWIST TO THIS AMERICAN CLASSIC

Ah, fall apples and grilled cheese, two delightful ingredients that come together to create a symphony of flavors and textures to celebrate the season.  The result is a scrumptious grilled cheese sandwich with the sweet and slightly tart flavor of apples complementing the rich, gooey cheddar cheese. The apples add a delightful crunch and a hint of freshness to the sandwich.  This fall-inspired grilled cheese sandwich is sure to satisfy you in every bite!

INGREDIENTS

• 1/4 red onion, sliced

• 2 tablespoons brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• Sliced sourdough bread

• 1-2 tablespoons butter

• 4 ounces Brie, sliced

• Fig jam, or preferred choice of jam

• 1 Granny Smith apple, sliced

• Arugula

• Thinly sliced ham, optional

DIRECTIONS

Heat olive oil in the skillet and add sliced onions. Cook for a few minutes and then add brown sugar. Sauté until soft. Set aside. Butter the outside of the sourdough bread. Next, spread jam on the inside of both slices. Add cheese, apples, onions and arugula. If using meat, add as well. Top with slice of bread and grill on skillet until both sides are toasted and cheese is melted. Serve and enjoy!
