Time's a-wastin' y'all! As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the cooling of the weather and the routine of school for our children are often welcomed friends by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. After being cooped up for the last few years, many of us have braved the hazards of traveling by air or have decided to hit the road - skyrocketing gas prices be damned! We do this because we can't let these opportunities go by. Whether you decided to head up to Colorado like the Bubeks, or have a busy rodeo schedule like Olivia, Tory, or Gabriella, this summer was like everything came roaring back to life just like the JSU Tigers. This was a time to get out, get busy, explore new things, new places, or maybe just start something new like Michael and Emma. This is why our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are sharing some of the adventures you shared with us and also shared a few of our go-to spots and things to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. Three baby bears released back into the wild With joint efforts between Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, and Arizona Game & Fish, three of five baby bears have been rehabilitated and released into the wild. After receiving months of care, the three male black bears showed proficient forging skills, natural behavior, and were ready to be released. They were given a final health assessment and identification ear tags. The bears were taken to a suitable habitat where they can continue to live a fulfilled life.

Summer Body Ready: 3 Simple Tips to Embrace Body Neutrality As the number on the temperature ticks higher and higher, for many people so does their anxiety. With trendy sayings like “hot girl summer” and “summer body ready”, the pressure to meet certain expectations in order to enjoy the summer feel deeply connected to our body image and outward appearance. Something to keep in mind is that ditching the old ways of body-shaming and conditional worth doesn’t mean you have to jump into a hollow, inauthentic show of body positivity. The real goal here is body neutrality. Body neutrality focuses on appreciation of the body as it is and encourages acceptance for simply existing. And creating body neutrality can start with a few simple steps to ease into new patterns. Conversations with yourself: Our self-talk impacts how we view ourselves. Shifting from body-shame into body neutrality looks like acknowledging the function of your body, noticing what it does over how it looks. Conversations with others: A good rule of thumb when creating boundaries to help with body neutrality is simply dropping body talk from conversations. When the topic of body size, weight, or critique gets brought up, redirect back to how you or the other person feels or take the conversation in a different direction. Become more mindful: Whether it be with food, clothing, or exercise, take the opportunity to understand what you gain from these that have nothing to do with appearance. Try eating more intuitively and listening to your inner urges and delights. Move your body to feel good rather than the attaching it to achieving weight loss, etc. Shifting into body neutrality in a world focused on appearance can feel like a radical move, and it is! Glenwood Springs, about two hours from Breckenridge, is home to one-ofa-kind attractions and arguably the best destination for Colorado hot springs. The world’s largest mineral hot springs pool is a revitalizing retreat; plus, kids will love the whitewater tube ride plunging downhill with many twists and turns. Should you want to experience the real deal, however, Blue Sky Adventures rafts your family down the Colorado River, and you’ll surely catch some air. Meet Tubba Bear! Many of us, in the last couple of years, have had to re-evaluate our lives and embark on a different journey. For my wife and I, it was to launch a monthly magazine that we hope could help introduce the community we have come to love to all newcomers. For Michael Ivery, the journey started by challenging himself to draw, every day, for a year. Just 30 minutes a day; just to see if he was any good at it. Pretty soon, his youngest daughter Emma started emulating the Little Prince from Saint-Exupéry. For those of you who haven’t read the book, she started to ask for specific drawings. Not a sheep, like the little guy, but a bear and this bear needed to have a bow. Also, could it have a guitar, a pink one, just like mine. And thus, Tubba Bear was born. Being a friendly bear, Tubba Bear soon made some new friends. At first, it was a penguin and a tiger; then a messy monkey and an elephant named Ivan. As Michael and Emma drove around Gilbert, Tubba and their friends started to have adventures around town. From the corn fields to the four silos, Tubba and friends explored the world, made some more friends, and played music.

As Michael relates, at first it was only a way to spend quality time together with Emma, teach about kindness, making friends, having great adventures, and shared experiences. The journey did not have a specific destination in mind when it started but he soon wondered if he should write a book. Maybe he should, right? Luckily, Michael has a background in the music industry and a supportive partner. Soon, plans were made for a demo, new characters added, a quality print house was selected, and merchandise ordered. Launch is planned for the end of June but may slip to August; the copies are on the way as they say. Just like making an album, only the medium is different.

In the days before the pandemic, Michael was an international deejay touring across the Americas, Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, and many other countries. Always creative, he would design his own marketing material for concerts and tours. Self-taught, he would watch videos to learn how to create better designs and use the tools he now uses to bring Tubba to life. Like many, he has learned to adapt in this new world of remote working and freelancing. You can hear longing in his voice sometimes when he speaks of his previous adventures but you can tell he is also excited by the new project with Emma. Bringing together is passion for music, his relationship with his 3 daughters, his wife Christina, and the life they now have in Gilbert, this new project is a work full of promises. They say it takes about 10,000 hours to master a new skill — maybe

less if you count the overtime. After 2 and a half years of pandemic, it looks like we maybe almost half way there. I don’t know about you, but I think we should check in to see how “Tubba and Friends” are doing from time to time. I am curious to see how that rose turns out. After all, “All grown-ups were once children... but only few of them remember it.”, would say the Little Prince. “When it comes to raising your kids in the rodeo, there’s a lot of love, discipline and important values that run deep,” says Ame Faulkner, mom to two young athletes who are heavily involved in all things rodeo. Ame, a dental hygienist and co-owner at Gilbert Dental Center alongside her brother Todd Faulkner, says that—between all of her children—her family can either be found at the rodeo or a softball game. Two of her daughters, Olivia Gomez, age 19, and Gabriella Gomez, age 12, have been involved in the rodeo for years. “I love the adrenaline,” Gabriella says about her favorite rodeo activity, goat tying, which both her and Olivia have won multiple awards in. The sisters also specialize in breakaway roping. Olivia has been involved in the rodeo for 14 years, according to Ame, earning recognition in multiple associations as she went up the ranks. She’s ridden with the Queen Creek Rodeo Association, Arizona Junior Rodeo Association, and Arizona High School Rodeo Association. She has even made it to national competitions with goat tying. Gabriella has followed in her big sister’s footsteps and Ame says that the sisters are extremely close because of their shared passion. “Rodeo is an AIA [Arizona Interscholastic Association] sport, so there are grade checks and requirements in order to be involved,” Ame says. “Being a rodeo kid is a lot of responsibility. You’re up early to feed and care for the animals, you to go to school, then you’re home to practice and care for the animals again. On the weekends and breaks there is traveling and multiple events. It’s truly a passion for these kids.” In addition to the kids and teens being dedicated to the sport, there is a lot of family involvement as well. “The parental involvement is crazy; it’s a family sport. But the rodeo association is a family unto itself. It’s hard work, but a lot of love and we all show up for each other.” Fellow rodeo mom Starr Asquith also works at Gilbert Dental Center at the front desk. She and her husband Todd Asquith are both heavily involved in the rodeo—in fact, she was a rodeo kid herself. Her eldest daughter, Tory, is 13 and a member of the Arizona Junior Rodeo Association. She has been involved in the rodeo for four years. “She has ridden since she was old enough to hold on,” Starr shares. Starr adds that Tory has won multiple honors in rodeo events, including barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and breakaways. Tory hopes to continue to move up the ranks and win national competitions as

her rodeo journey continues. “There’s a saying that, ‘Rodeo kids have no time to get in trouble.’ Because, when you’re involved in the rodeo, there’s no time for anything else,” Starr says. “Even in the summer, she [Tory] is up at 5 a.m. practicing, then practices again in the evening. The rodeo season is usually September through May but, for families who want to, there are summer events you can travel to as well.” Like Ame, Starr agrees that being involved in the rodeo is a lot of responsibility for kids—but it’s also a lot of fun and keeps families close. “Not only does rodeo keep your own family close, but the rodeo world is super small and is like one big family itself,” Starr says. “You practice together. You travel together. The rodeo lifestyle is amazing for kids.”

Founded by former NFL players and football families, Gridiron Flag Football leagues provide the best non-contact experience for boys and girls. This youth flag football team is made up of boys ages 6 to 8 from the East Valley The team whose name is a tribute to Jackson State had a very unique vibe all season culminating in a championship ring. The boys wanted the photos to be in a location where they were able to express themselves—a coach suggested a parking garage and they went with it! They cancelled practice, suited up, and headed downtown. Instead of it being a shoot where the kids had to just get together and pose, the team photos turned into a “get together.” These boys push one another, challenge each other, and truly enjoy being together. The energy can be seen especially in the elevator photos which were accompanied by music. Music is something that they have at every single practice and game. The boys dance. The coaches dance. The dads dance. Music brings the team together.

Gilbert mom Janine Igliane balances family, career and philanthropy

It is a known fact that all moms are superheroes. From teaching kids to live, laugh and play, to instilling good values, helping with homework and making sure teeth get brushed, being a mom is a 24-7 job that requires a lot of juggling. For Gilbert resident, Janine Igliane, being mom is Job No. 1 and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Igliane has lived in Gilbert with her husband, Rey Igliane, since 2006, and she absolutely fell in love with the town. “I love that even though Gilbert is large, it still has a very small-town feel,” she says. “There are so many fun things to do, and it is very family friendly. Honestly, I just love seeing the growth with all the new restaurants and different shopping coming here. I’m super proud to call Gilbert home.” She and her husband, a firefighter with Scottsdale Fire Department, also have three children – Elise, Chase and Malorie Igliane. How does Igliane balance her schedule as a mom with her career as a Realtor with Keller Williams? “I think that’s the questions of the century,” she laughs. “Like if we could only figure out how to do it perfectly!” She continues, “For me, my family is super important, and I really do try to make sure I’m there for every sporting event and activity. I realize, especially now that my oldest child is a senior, how fast time goes, and so you really have to cherish that.” Her kids participate in swimming, softball and basketball, so Igliane gets her fill of sports each week, cheering on her children, and taking pride in their accomplishments at Gilbert Christian where they all attend. On the other side of the equation, this busy mom is passionate about her job as a Realtor. “For me, it’s all about having that focused time to work and that focused family time,” she says. “I heard a saying a long time ago that goes, ‘Wherever your feet are, be there.’ For me,

when I’m with my family, I try 100% to be there and not working, and then when I’m working, I’m totally focused on my business. Having that dedicated family time is how I make my family a priority.” As a family, the Iglianes love to travel, bike ride and take their boat up to Canyon Lake. “That’s probably our favorite family time because there’s no technology out there,” says Igliane. They also enjoy dining out and count Blue 32 and North Italia in Gilbert among their favorite restaurants. Another facet of Igliane’s busy life is her passion for giving back to the community, and she involves her family in that endeavor, too. “We moved here from Southern California and didn’t know anybody,” she explains. “It was through community events that I got to know people.” She soon discovered that many people from Gilbert also had moved here from other states, and she embraced that as a great chance to bond with the community. Through her business she now holds fun events. “Whether it’s a movie in the park or hosting a cornhole charity event, we’re able to bring the community together and do good, and that feels good!” The biggest event Igliane orchestrates is a huge annual food drive for East Valley-based House of Refuge, a faithbased nonprofit that offers 2-bedroom homes and support services to families experiencing homelessness. “We collect tons of donated food for House of Refuge, and it lasts them December through the summer, and it feels so good to do that with our neighbors.” The Iglianes know several families that have been blessed to be helped by House of Refuge so she does everything she can for them. The family hopes to live in Gilbert for the long term. “We talk about it all the time,” finishes Igliane. “We have no plans to go anywhere else and I hope my kids stay here, too.”
