For someone like Ishmail ‘Ish’ Wainwright, it certainly can be a father and a grandfather but it may also be a peer - someone like Jae Crowder who he plays with and can lead the way. For me, it is people like Gary and Daren who, with full day time jobs manage to follow their dreams and start a business. It is also people like Jan and Ben who seem to be able to pick up any sport with ease and excel, Tim who can make friends easily and make you laugh. Andrew who can be hit hard by COVID and prevail. Todd who watches over everyone and has the heart of a Viking. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

Christmas Town spectacular coming to Bell Bank Park.
The “Pratt Brothers Christmas & Holiday Spectacular!” will be one of the largest holiday entertainment experiences in the country. Have you ever played darts? If you are one of the 16 to 24 million Americans who, at one point or another, have had a chance, you are probably familiar with how the game is played and how the scores are kept. Now imagine doing the same thing with axes. Yes, axes… the same axes used to cut wood and warm your campfire or your cabin on the Mogollon Rim. This is what a few friends and I have had a chance to try recently at a new venue in Gilbert – Social Axe Throwing – located in the shopping plaza at the corner of South Val Vista Drive and East Williams Filed Road.

What a crazy fun couple of hours! Daren McCartney and Gary DeSylvia, the owners, made us feel welcome right away, making sure everyone was checked in and ready to go. After a mandatory safety training – they are sharp blades after all – we were coached by Daren on the art of axe throwing. With the smell of freshly cut wood and sawdust in the air, Daren explained that we could either use both hands or one – a la Daniel Boone if you’re old school like me. The trick being as simple as to take a step forward, let go, and make jazz hands. After a few throws to warm up, with axes flying and bouncing, we were assembled into two teams and the fun began. Now, if you are familiar with darts, you know that hand-eye coordination is critical in order to hit that bullseye. Throwing a 2.5-pound axe, on the other hand, requires a slightly different

technique and a strong core. With Daren as the referee, each team competed against the other in games similar to dart games like 501, Knockout, and Baseball. We spent the next couple of hours cheering, jeering, getting loud, and having a good time- all the things we missed during the COVID restrictions. Between the cheering and jeering, the WHACK! of the blade on the wood it can get loud, so be prepared and let your inner Viking run wild. Opened in February, Social Axe Throwing is the first franchise in Arizona from this Utah company. While axe throwing is not a first in the Valley, Social Axe Throwing is the only one offering food and drinks. It already hosts a few league events and hopes to add another fun activity that requires similar skills and definitely less dangerous equipment – Outdoor Cornhole.

“Having a chance to be in the playoffs is a dream come true,” Wainright says. In the upcoming off-season, Wainright will head over to Uganda and play for its national team in hopes of propelling them into the next Olympics.
Ishmail ‘Ish’ (The Mailman) Wainright might be the newest Phoenix Suns player, but he is already ingrained in our community. He has amassed a fanbase that warmly embraces him as part of the Suns’ family, as evidenced by a recent photoshoot in Downtown Gilbert. On a bright and sunny afternoon in April, Ish Wainright, his manager and a few members of his family were keeping it low-profile during the photoshoot for Gilbert City Lifestyle Magazine. Sure enough, fans started coming off the street, asking for photographs, autographs and giving him well wishes as the Phoenix Suns were heading into the semi-finals. Standing 6’5 and weighing in at 250 lbs., Wainright’s sports career could have gone in just about any direction. “I’ve played literally everything,” says Wainright. “I used to be a swimmer. I was a good swimmer and won multiple competitions. I played baseball and was a third baseman.” “I quit soccer because it was too much running,” he adds with a laugh. “Then there was basketball and football… My dad was a coach for basketball, flag football, baseball… Anything you can think of.” Wainright’s grandfather was NBA player Maurice King, although he never got the chance to meet him.

In college, Wainright played basketball for the Baylor Bears for four seasons and switched gears into football. He joined the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent, but alas, did not make the team. The passion for football that he had as a youngster growing up in Kansas City, Mo. was no longer there. The next day after he was waived, he called his agent and said he was ready to commit to basketball and began training hard. Wainright played in the German and French professional basketball clubs, eventually signing with the Toronto Raptors in August 2021, only to be waived by the team after two months. Only days later, he signed with the Phoenix Suns, and a few weeks ago, the Suns converted his previously signed two-way contract into a standard contract. “This is real. This is what I want to do. This is my passion. This is what I love. This is going to change not only my life but my family’s life!” Wainright is Phoenix Suns’ No. 12 and a power forward who has had limited playing time in the 2021-2022 season but has made his minutes count. In a pre-playoffs game against the LA Clippers on April 6, Wainright posted up 20 points, stepping
up with assists and two and three-pointers while winning the admiration of Suns fans at the away game. We should all expect big things to be delivered by The Mailman in the coming season. Phoenix Suns’ Jae Crowder (Gilbert City Lifestyle’s July 2021 cover) has taken Wainright under his wing and mentored him in the months since joining the team. “When I first got here, I didn’t know too much about Jae,” he says. “I only knew the Jae on TV, not Jae the person. From day one, he took me under his wing and said, ‘I got you. Don’t worry about it, little brother.’ And he’s a veteran. So, everything he says, I want to listen to. He’s been in the league 11-plus years.” Crowder was also at least partially a factor in Wainright’s decision to switch from Adidas to Nike Kobe shoes. “That’s all I wear now!” He has gelled quickly with the Suns and now with a standard contract in place, the Valley is feeling more like home. “Everyone has welcomed me with open arms,” says Wainright. “This is the coolest team I’ve

In the upcoming off-season, Wainright will head over to Uganda and play for its national team in hopes of propelling them into the next Olympics.

After moving back to Arizona to partner in Joe’s Real BBQ , he teamed up with his partners to open Joe’s Farm Grill in Gilbert in 2006, and Topo Arizona in 2019. In 43 years being in the real estate business I have personally experienced 5 significant “shifts” in the market. We are in one now. Right now, is still a great time to buy as rates are still relatively low, in the 5’s. Compare that to 1981 when I was selling homes with interest rates at 17.5%. Also, it is still a great time to sell because inventory is at all-time lows which translates to sellers being able to still command top dollar for their homes. But be careful, have no illusions about this market. It is changing and where it’s going is a mystery. 36
