LIFESTYLE LETTER

Women of Gilbert

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Robin Belley | robin.belley@citylifestyle.com SALES DIR ECTOR

Kristy Belley | kristy.belley@citylifestyle.com

Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As we reflect on the many women in our lives, we are thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left me inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. We also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

Mindy Jones Amy Jones Group Owner Community on Purpose Founder Instagram @communityonpurposeaz amyjonesgroup.com comunityonpurpose.org “My life has been changed by each connection I’ve made. I absolutely love talking about the power of connection and community.” Mindy is the mother of a 2.5-year-old, runs a business, and is actively involved in multiple non-profits, and leadership projects throughout the community. The power of connection and community have shaped her life’s journey as she started in the nonprofit sector, moved through a career in corporate technology, and later caught the entrepreneurial bug when she took over a family business. She came into her own as a leader discovering what was important and authentic to her and shedding what no longer fit as she built a team of hard-working women focused on giving back to their community. Mindy continued to develop her focus on empowering women which she does by immersing herself into the work of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce & as incoming chair of their Women Empowered Committee, hosting Women in Leadership Breakfasts and volunteer events with her real estate business, and creating Community on Purpose, the nonprofit that shares the name with the Podcast & focuses on supporting women in leadership and business.

The Importance of Self-Care “Self-care is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation.”-Audre Lorde Self-care; a buzzword that has been recently discussed more than ever. However, selfcare is much more then a buzzword or new trend. Self-care is a way to intentionally take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. This is an activity that we enjoy; it refuels us, rather than takes something away from us. It can be difficult to get into a pattern of implementing activities that are not a part of our normal routine, that are just for us to enjoy. Here are some tips that will help you improve your self-care: 1. Physical self-care is making sure your body is nourished and happy. The main aspects of physical self-care are moving your body, rest, sleep, and fueling your body with good nutrition. Any physical activity such as walking, cycling, or yoga, will be helpful to release endorphins to reduce stress. 2. Mental/Emotional self-care can be the hardest form of self-care to practice because this can require us to face tough emotions and to look inward. Helpful ways to practice mental and emotional self-care are implementing journaling, reading, practice gratitude, and meditation. 3. Social self-care also intertwines with social media usage and how that can affect our mental health. Reducing screen time and having boundaries with social media platforms is extremely important for overall wellbeing. Social self-care also includes quality time with social supports and loved ones, as well as taking time to enjoy alone time.

Even five to ten minutes of any self-care activity can be extremely beneficial. It is important to remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Set aside some time for yourself this week, even if it is just a few minutes.

BURNOUT IS REAL 4 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR PEACE

30

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

A woman’s role in today’s society is much more complex (and exhausting) than ever. Whether you’re a woman with children or without, a mother who works outside the home or is a fulltime manager of the home, a woman who is just entering the work field or is multiple years into your career journey… All of these roles require a whole lot of time, energy, and resources that are often focused on everyone else, except for yourself. And quite frankly, we do a pretty awesome job of balancing all of these responsibilities, because well, we are women, and that term is pretty much synonymous with superhero. However, in spite of our ability to wear so many hats, this does not mean it isn’t difficult and often quite stressful. And while this can certainly be overwhelming, here are some ways to prevent burnout, so that you can keep being the amazing woman that you are: Social supports: It is really common for women to express that they feel alone and lack social support. They will often say that they either don’t have many friends or don’t have time for the friends they do have. The tough part of this is that as humans, and especially female humans, we are designed for connection and community. So, while it is easy to feel as though you don’t have time for friends, friends might actually be the very thing you need. Make time for hobbies and passions: Identity is another common struggle many women face. Women often identify as a mother, wife, daughter, employee, etc.; however, when we get lost in the shuffle of our daily roles and responsibilities, we often leave little time for our hobbies, interests, and passions. It is crucial we allow ourselves the time and opportunity to pursue the passions and activities that allow us to identify as more than a function to others. Learn to say no: Yes, we know that we can do it all, but that doesn’t mean we have to. One of the biggest mistakes we make as women is refusing to say no, even when we are feeling stressed or over capacity. It is okay not to volunteer, not to bake those cookies, not to pick up the slack for a co-worker, and not to go to the 5th birthday party of the weekend. Learning to say no, is essential for protecting your peace. Give yourself some grace: Allow yourself not to be everything to everyone. Allow yourself space to rest. Allow yourself grace for moments when you wish you would have done better. A gentle reminder, you are doing an incredible job of caring for your family and balancing a hundred different additional obligations and responsibilities. You are likely exhausted, overwhelmed, and burnt out, but in spite of that, you are still doing it! And that, my friend, is incredibly impressive.

COMMANDING PRESENCE How Women of the Gilbert PD are Making their Mark

L IEU T E NA N T M A R I A GU N T ER "To females considering a career in law enforcement, I say go for it!! You can do it all. You can be a mother, a daughter, a sister, a role model, and a great police officer. Although there are some physical and educational requirements, much of what it takes to be a good police officer is being a great communicator. A police officer’s best tool is their ability to communicate and to deescalate people in crisis.”

“Reach out to females in law enforcement in the community you wish to serve. We all have unique perspectives and experiences. This career is all about balance, balancing the demands of this career with your individuality to best serve and protect your community.”

"My advice to females in law enforcement is to expect and accept failure, then seek feedback. I believe resilience is developed from failure. Trust yourself enough to be resilient and handle the challenges presented to you. We all entered this profession with different life experiences. Don’t be afraid to share yours, it will ultimately make you a more well-rounded officer."

IV therapy may be just what you need to hydrate and boost your health

38

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

When you’re in need of a way to hydrate and obtain some much-needed nutrients, IV therapy is often a great option. While many associate IVs with hospital visits, IV infusions that are full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals and are meant to be preventative treatments have grown in popularity over the years. In fact, it’s a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. IV infusion therapy is when a medical professional utilizes an IV to deliver a specific mix of vitamins, minerals, and saline to help the patient hydrate and obtain specific health goals. “In general, IV infusions can be an excellent way for people to maintain hydration and obtain nutrient-rich therapy,” explains Kristina Mattson, FNP-C, a nurse practitioner at Sapphire Health & Wellness. “While we do not think that IV therapy should take the place of a healthy diet, it can help patients prevent illness and assist in recovering post-illness or post-workout. Many of our patients schedule regular IV therapy to maintain their immune system, or to help with constipation, malnutrition related to IBS or frequent diarrhea, fatigue, migraines, and hangovers…Hydration is also key to maintaining youthful skin.” Mattson adds that, in general, IV treatment therapy can help with energy, immunity, prevent constipation and dry skin, recover muscles after a long workout, recover after illness or COVID-19, and reduce symptoms related to migraines. Those seeking an IV therapy treatment should go to a reputable medical facility and make sure that the procedure, while minor, is handled and overseen by a licensed medical professional. Most practices that offer IV therapy treatments offer them with specific mixtures of vitamins, minerals, and saline to accomplish

targeted health goals. For example, at Sapphire Health & Wellness, IV infusions come in four price categories ranging from $90 to $200 and, in addition to saline, offer varying mixes of ingredients like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, folic acid, biotin, magnesium sulfate, and many more. “Patients should know what they are wanting to accomplish with IV treatment so that the provider can help to identify the best infusion package for their concerns,” Mattson adds. Mattson also notes that while it’s a medical procedure and should be done in a safe, professional environment, IV infusions are traditionally low risk. “Getting an IV infusion at our office is fairly risk-free since a provider is ensuring that the infusion and all of its ingredients are safe for the patient,” she explains. “There is always a risk of skin infection post-IV treatment, however our staff always use aseptic technique and educates patients on post-care. Allergic reactions are rare but can happen any time a patient should have a medication and our providers and office staff are well equipped to handle any reaction that could occur. Should patients have any problems after they leave, our on-call provider is available 24/7.” Another perk to utilizing an office like Sapphire Health & Wellness for IV therapy is that they offer a lot of additional add-ons to the treatment, and you can potentially be seen for other medical needs while there. “All IVs are done in-office. The benefit of coming in-office for an infusion is that one of our providers will meet with you and make sure that the infusion that you choose is not only going to help you, but is safe for you,” Mattson says. “We offer additives that many traditional mobile IV companies do not offer because we are able

“The main goal of our office is to make the experience as comfortable and relaxing as possible.” to have a provider sign off on the safety of your medication. Essentially, they are prescribing you an IV, like they would a medication. Because of this, we do require a full medical history to be performed during your consultation with one of our nurse practitioners.” Once someone decides that IV treatment is right for them, what is the experience like? While each office is different, Mattson shares what to expect at her practice. “The main goal of our office is to make the experience as comfortable and relaxing as possible,” she explains. “Patients will be taken into our infusion room where they will be the only patient, giving complete privacy. A consult with one of the nurse practitioners will ensure that patient’s IV is safe. The nurse practitioner will insert an IV catheter into the patient’s arm. For patients who are afraid of needles or the pain, we do offer numbing creams, allow patients to lie down, or play music to distract.”

“IV infusion is relatively safe; however, it is advised that patients eat a light snack prior to their infusion to prevent nausea or lightheadedness,” she continues. “Once the IV is placed, the infusion will begin. All infusions take about an hour to run. During this time, patients are in a peaceful, calming infusion room where they can rest or do as they choose.” Mattson adds that couples or friends can buddy up and receive their infusion treatments together, too. IV therapy is only one of many treatments to be found at Sapphire Health & Wellness, which is a primary care office, offering women’s health, men’s health, teen health, sexual health, STD testing, sick visits, and weight loss assistance, among other offerings. Scheduling for IV therapy at Sapphire Health & Wellness is separate of their traditional practice and can be done at visibook.com/sapphirehealthaz or by calling 480-219-7810.
