In colder climes, spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. For us, this season promises ideal temperatures for outdoor activities and the continuing joy of exploring the beauty of our world. There are a multitude of spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for relaxing—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore both locally and globally. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is an easy destination for the Gilbert traveler. After a short 2.5-hour non-stop flight from Phoenix, you will have arrived in a delightful tropical paradise. This city is smaller than some of the other popular destinations in Mexico, and you will soon feel the embrace of the local culture. We were treated like welcome guests everywhere we went, and the bonus was we always felt very safe—even at night walking through town or back to the resort in the evenings. Just minutes from the airport, downtown area, marina, and many golf courses, we enjoyed two resorts—The Westin Resort & Spa, Puerto Vallarta and the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. Each was unique and both are stunning properties. Our visit was during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a traditional Mexican holiday signifying prayer and remembrance of friends and family who have passed. There is nothing morbid about it—it is believed the departed are rejoining the living for a visit during this celebration of parades, food, and lots of fun. It truly is the perfect time for a family vacation! Directly across from the Puerto Vallarta Marina, our first stay was at the Marriott, and it didn’t take long to realize we were in for a treat as this resort celebrates the festival with its own party for guests to learn the traditions and history behind the holiday. The first day was spent on the property. As Arizonans, one of the first things on our agenda was to curl our toes into the sand of the beach and dip our feet into the water. The beach was devoid of rocks, the sand was soft, and the waves lapped gently on the shore. Perfection. The entire resort is newly remodeled and lacks no attention to detail. The infinity pool is massive and seems to spill right over to the beach. Its large center island, swim-up pool bar, and adjoining outdoor dining areas were a perfect way to spend the day. With six restaurants on property and room service 24 hours a day, there is no reason to be hungry. The second day was spent immersing ourselves in the holiday by visiting the oldest cemetery, which was located on top of a hill in the center of town. Families were gathered for picnics

at gravesites with colorful headstones, there was music playing, and candles and flowers were everywhere—especially the traditional orange marigolds. Back at the resort that evening, guests enjoyed the pool terrace decorated with holiday lights, altars built by the staff, and live entertainment and music, followed by a traditional Mexican feast. Another bonus with this resort is its commitment to the world’s Olive Ridley sea turtle population. The hotel has its own biologist overseeing all volunteer activities for guests of all ages to participate in the nightly release of the recent hatchlings back into the sea. Hatching season runs from June – December. The Westin was our second stop. The resort is situated on 14 acres of a former palm tree plantation and over 600 palms remain on the property. Several sprout up on mini palm tree islands in the middle of the massive pools, and many frame the over 400 feet of private, white sand beach.

The above-and-beyond service at the resort began the moment we arrived and continued throughout our stay. The grounds are lush, and you soon realize the commitment to health and wellness as we passed the spa; gym; tennis courts; kayak rental area; beach club with pergolas complete with chaise lounge and privacy curtains; meeting spaces; and the long, winding pools, which were simply amazing. Complete with built-in loungers, a swim-up bar and poolside service, they are easily your first or final destination for the day. There are three on-site restaurants for dining, with plenty of options for freshly caught seafood and healthy cuisine. Puerto Vallarta is a melting pot of diverse cultures, and they are all on display at the many local Farmers Markets, which are generally held during the winter months. With over 250 vendors, it was a perfect time to support the local economy and ogle all the beautiful big boats while listening to live music and enjoying the street entertainment.
On our second evening, we were treated to a sunset picnic on the beach, set up with cozy cushions to sit on and expertly prepared food and drinks served to us as we watched the sun dip below the horizon while stunning colors of the sunset were streaked across the sky and reflected on the water. Breathtaking! The entire resort is dedicated to a holistic commitment to well-being: Sleep Well, Eat Well, Play Well, Feel Well, and Meet Well. The management and staff go out of their way to ensure that the destination is a place to relax, recharge, and have the type of vacation you’ve dreamed of, whether that’s relaxing by the pool, spending time at the spa (we had massages that were amazing!), enjoying water sports, biking around the area, or heading out to explore Puerto Vallarta itself. Whether a family trip, romantic escape, girlfriend getaway, or destination wedding, it's just a short flight to a welcoming paradise at these stunning oceanfront destinations.

You’ve heard of the majesty of our state’s Grand Canyon, but did you know there is another captivating canyon just a couple of hours from the Valley? Aravaipa Canyon came onto my radar thanks to an adventurous friend who frequently climbs throughout Arizona. He told me that Aravaipa had all the best parts of the Grand Canyon except without the steep trek. I was sold, and started looking for permits immediately. To keep it pristine, a total of only 50 people are allowed in the permitted part of the wilderness per day, 20 from the East Trailhead and 30 from the West Trailhead. These permits open up 13 weeks in advance, but I decided to check every day for the chance of a possible cancellation. When three days in mid-February opened up, my partner and I snatched them quickly. I hadn’t backpacked since a 2018 trip to the stunning waterfalls at the Havasupai Indian Reservation, so we got prepared fast with only a few weeks to get lots of gear. Luckily, the Valley has several great outdoor shops with rentals and knowledgeable employees ready to share important tips. Gear Up I think anyone that has the ability needs to experience backpacking at least once in their life. However, the gear required can get expensive fast — and that’s why we decided to rent some items to test them out first and save some cash. The Arizona Hiking Shack in Phoenix is a great resource for backpack rentals, clothing, and dehydrated foods. Since we were staying for just two nights, the helpful employees recommended renting a 44-liter women’s backpacking for me. And, my partner decided to go old school and use his dad’s very vintage backpack. Taylor’s Tip: Rent or buy a critter bag, made of cut-resistant material, and bring rope to hang from a tree…you do NOT want a little squirrel or big bear to steal all of your snacks. Research the Weather With temperatures below 30 at night, we stocked up on wool undergarments, gloves,

hats, and socks. As we’re now inching closer and closer to summer though, a trip to Aravaipa will be different. Instead of snuggling up in a 20 degree and below sleeping bag, you can sleep under the stars in a hammock. But, no matter what time of year you visit, I would highly recommend using wool socks under your shoes. And…speaking of shoes…make sure you’re ready to get wet in Aravaipa! This winding canyon has been chiseled by Aravaipa Creek, and much of the ‘trail’ is actually through the creek. The water levels will vary greatly depending on when you go, so be careful if you visit during monsoon season since flash floods are frequent. Getting There While it takes approximately two hours to drive to the west trailhead from Gilbert, it would take double the time and a high clearance vehicle to make it to the east trailhead. Our permits were for the west trailhead, so we made our way towards Apache Junction on the 60 to drive through the scenic vistas around Superior, Kearny, and finally Winkelman — the nearest town. The turnoff to Aravaipa Road is just after the Apache Sky Casino, and I was surprised to see many farms and ranches along the road right up until the trailhead.

We made sure our printed permits were showing on our dashboard and set off into the canyon in the early afternoon. Learning Along the Way Like the creek we walked along, we realized that the best way to enjoy this experience is by going with the flow. Yes, it would be amazing to see all 12 miles of the main canyon path and someday I hope we will, however, what we found to be more important was to cherish the solitude in nature and the beauty surrounding us (and tbh we would be over ambitious to try to hike much more than we did).

The steep canyon walls are covered in saguaros, while the surrounding creek bed is lush with greenery. We walked mostly through the shallow creek for about four miles before we found a pleasant campsite perched by the rock wall and some trees. With a fire ring already in place from a previous camper, we quickly set up our two-person backpacking tent and built a fire with branches and twigs that were already on the ground. Although it had been a warm day in the 70s, we were in for a cold night with rain and possibly snow in the forecast. The desert can really be so shifty, so we were glad that we packed waterproof layers. So Much to Explore While the distance from the west entrance to the east is about 12 miles, Aravaipa also has many side canyons. Our full day in the canyon was rainy and chilly, so we didn’t want to make the trek through the water to find a side canyon.

Luckily, the views around our campsite were nothing short of amazing. We used our Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter System to get clean water from the creek to use for cooking and drinking. Using the french press attachment on our Jetboil, we were able to easily make coffee — which we desperately needed after a night of tossing and turning on our sleeping pads. Taylor’s Tip: If you have the carrying capacity, bring both an accordion sleeping mat and an inflatable one. You want as much padding between you and the ground as possible. Heading Home Photos really don’t do Aravaipa justice. The peaceful energy emits throughout the canyon, and really seems to transform all who enter. Although we only saw one other backpacker pass by our campsite, there were many day hikers enjoying the canyon as we hiked out, and all were smiling from ear to ear with gratitude to experience this hidden gem of Arizona. With tired feet and achy backs, but full hearts, it took us about five hours to get back to our car. We felt so accomplished, and were dreaming of the tasty, fresh food we would enjoy. Another tip: Bring some salt and pepper to add some flavor to dehydrated food…it makes a BIG difference. After a quick search online, we found Old Time Pizza in downtown Kearny — just one hour from Aravaipa. Their OTP Pizza was topped with lots of veggies, making my choice for a root beer float a guiltless choice. And, if you have more time and energy, we would highly recommend learning about the area’s mining history. You’ll see many mines in this area, and can even stay in a historic boarding house that was used for working men and wealthy merchants that flocked to nearby Globe more than a century ago. I know I could have used some pampering at the Chrysocolla Inn, a cozy bed and breakfast that has clawfoot tubs in some of the rooms. Instead, we made our way back to the Valley and forged mental notes of everything we want to see next time.

The Sunday Scaries… Sunday Night Blues… Sunday Not-so-Fun Day… Call it whatever you may, but there is certainly a reason that rather bleak labels have been assigned to this experience. It is because you are not alone in the feelings of dread and impending doom that come along with heading into a new week. For a lot of people, the weekdays can feel stressful and overwhelming, but also simultaneously boring and monotonous. The sense of being on a hamster wheel throughout the week is rather deflating and even disheartening for many; and thus, a significant portion of the population begins the countdown each Monday morning for the return of the weekend. And while it makes sense that weekends are more favorable due to the decrease in expectations and stress on those days, it is also worth considering that weekend days are more enjoyable because of the increase in time and opportunities to engage in adventures and exploration. Reduces stress: Going on an adventure is a fun and effective method to reduce stress, as it gets you out of your daily routine and often serves as a wonderful distraction from ongoing daily life stressors. Exposure to entertaining and exciting experiences also leads to an increase in feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters, which is helpful for improving overall mood states and general life satisfaction. Increases creativity and problemsolving skills: Exploration often consists of trying new things and opening your mind up to new possibilities and viewpoints. It exposes you to new stimuli, which causes the brain to create new neural pathways. These new pathways increase the brain’s ability to think outside of the box, thus leading to enhanced creativity and problem-solving. Improves self-esteem: Allowing yourself to explore outside of your comfort zone can be really good for your self-esteem, as it often leads to feelings of accomplishment, fulfillment, and even pride. Engaging in exploration results in increased knowledge and life experiences, which promotes feelings of both competence and confidence. Enhances relationships: Discovering new people, places, and things is valuable for enhancing relationship with both yourself and others. Exploring solely can lead to invaluable moments of introspection and self-discovery. Moreover, exploring with others, furnishes opportunities for deep and thought-provoking discussions, which leads to stronger connections and cherished memories. Power in the Imperfections Perfectionism was once believed to be a good problem to have as it was thought to be a driving force for success and high standards. Yet, perfectionism actually holds children back and limits their growth. It instills a fear of failure resulting in children limiting themselves to activities that come easily to them. Being a perfectionist creates additional turmoil and distress, and if you are parenting a perfectionist, you’ve likely seen the emotional toll it can take. Here are three ways you can help. 1. Effort over Outcome. Be cognizant around what your praise looks like. Giving praise around achievements or outcomes only reinforces your child’s perfectionist tendencies. Instead, provide praise around your child’s hard work, persistence, or other positive attributes like their kindness or compassion. The more specific praise you can give them, the better. This shows your child that achievement is not the only important thing in life. 2. Model Healthy Self-Talk. Children learn from their caregivers. If negative self-talk is modeled in their home, they are picking up on those patterns. Teaching your child to be compassionate towards themselves starts with showing yourself compassion when you make a mistake and doing so out loud for your child to hear. It’s imperative for them to understand that belittling themselves is detrimental to their well-being. 3. Coping with Disappointment. It’s crucial to show your child how to deal with disappointment, mistakes, and rejection in a healthy way. Breathing exercises, listening to music, or talking to a loved one are just a few examples. It could also be helpful to share stories of your own failures and how you coped. This teaches them that their caregivers aren’t perfect, and that while failure can be uncomfortable, it is not intolerable.

Exploring Color Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year is Very Peri, a strong and exuberant color that’s goal is to celebrate being bold and courageous as well as to embrace the digital world. To begin the process of applying this vivid color of the year, it is helpful to first understand the color. The color Very Peri involves qualities of a very dynamic blue while also portraying violet hues due to its red undertone. The vibrance of Very Peri might seem intimidating at first but choosing complimentary colors and materials is key to creating the right palette. You may have heard of Catalina Island and thought, “Maybe, someday.” What you may not realize is that an engaging island adventure is only a few hours away. There are so many things to do and discover on historic Catalina Island, whether you’re traveling by yourself, as a couple or with a family, you will have the trip of a lifetime and want to return. Any getaway to Catalina Island begins with a trip to Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point to catch a ride on the Catalina Express. Our chosen port was Long Beach and Catalina Express was a dream. In less than a six-hour drive from Gilbert, we parked at the convenient parking structure at Long Beach and boarded a luxurious boat, bound for Catalina Island. Aboard, we chose the upgraded indoor Commodore Lounge with snack and beverage service included, sat back and enjoyed the 55-minute smooth-asglass jaunt to our destination. The crew was upbeat, friendly and informative. It’s no wonder Catalina Express has continually garnered rave reviews for value, promptness and hospitality since its inception in 1981. Helicopter rides are also available from the mainland to Catalina Island, but on the Catalina Express, we had a chance to experience the beauty of the ocean and the gorgeous approach into the port of Avalon. Once you arrive, one huge bonus on Catalina Island is that you won’t need a rental car. Nearly everything you do can be accessed in the port city of Avalon by walking or biking. Feeling like getting out to see more of island? You can always rent a golf cart conveniently available just steps away from the Catalina Express docking area. Our home base was Hermosa Hotel, a mere eight-minute walk from the Catalina Express station. The conveniently located historic hotel was established in 1896 and one of a few hotels to escape Catalina’s devastating 1915 fire. cottages and much peace and quiet, while remaining just a minute’s walk away from all the Avalon action. Hermosa Hotel also has complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby and a variety of beach toys and accessories available to guests. Many snorkelers and scuba divers choose this hotel for its laid-back community vibe. At the centrally located green pier, you will find no shortage of fun things to do, and many events start at or depart from this area. If you haven’t visited the island before, take the Avalon-area bus tour that will provide you with a wealth of information about the history of Avalon, a glimpse of its neighborhoods and the homes of the Wrigley family that still own the Catalina Island Company. If feeling a bit more adventurous, sign up for an island Jeep Eco Tour which will take you far back into the hills to see buffalo, deer, the occasional fox and beautiful landscape that most people don’t get to see because certain areas are not accessible to the general public. Along the way, you will learn about island conservancy efforts and how most of Catalina Island is indeed preserved and cannot be further developed. Don’t miss the semi-submersible submarine ride which takes guests around a portion of the island to reveal what lies beneath the typically calm waters surrounding Catalina. You’ll see a variety of fish, including the “o-fish-al” state fish, the bright orange Garibaldi, rays and an occasional turtle.

Emerging from the submarine, book a watery adventure that will take you out further into the waters surrounding Catalina. The dolphin or whale watching expeditions are thrilling. The trained crews will take you out about 30-minutes around the island to an area where you and your 15 boatmates will be surrounded by a hundred dolphins that will swim right up and look you right in the eye before zipping off and jumping in the waves around you. Both dolphin and whale watching expeditions are seasonal, so check the island schedule. Also available are scuba trips, fishing charters, kayaking, paddleboarding, food and wine trails, haunted tours and the exciting zipline eco tour. Call ahead and book a tour of the island’s iconic Casino Building. Although it used to house a theater showing first-run movies, the interior is now only accessible via guided tour and it’s worth it! The iconic art deco building has immense history and is a gorgeous step back in time. Marilyn Monroe and her first husband lived on Catalina Island and spent time in this building as well as other spots on the island, including Lloyd’s of Avalon. The Casino Building exterior also showcases the Catalina Mermaid and related thematic murals at the building’s entrance which are simply breathtaking.

An annual event taking place on the island is the Catalina Island Wine Mixer. Made indelibly iconic in the film, “Stepbrothers,” the event attracts people from around the world to enjoy two full days of entertainment, and wine, whiskey and spirit tastings. Of course, there is always a screen of the film “Stepbrothers,” starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly which included an imaginary event called the Catalina Wine Mixer that was an absolute disaster. The faux event materialized into a real event, and it is now a fun part of the island’s identity. Ferrell and Reilly have famously been known to attend the mixer on occasion. The Catalina Island Wine Mixer takes place June 3-4, 2022. Tickets can be purchased at www.visitcatalinaisland.com Bluewater Avalon, The Lobster Trap, Maggie’s Blue Rose, El Galleon and NDM Fish House are just some of the many restaurants in the Avalon area. VALLARTA FRESH AT THE WESTIN RESORT & SPA, PUERTO VALLARTA INGREDIENTS • 1 oz. natural simple syrup • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice • 2 pieces of guava, cut in chunks • 6 leaves of mint, chopped • 4 oz. fresh pineapple juice
INSTRUCTIONS Place in a shaker the guava, lemon juice. natural syrup, and mint leaves. Muddle heavily. Add the pineapple juice and shake vigorously. In a mason jar or other glass, pour drink over ice. Garnish the drink with a slice of guava and a mint leaf or two.

CEVICHE ARIZONA STYLE INGREDIENTS • 1/2 a pound of cod filet, chopped (about 2 cups) • 2 Roma tomatoes, chopped • 3 tablespoons of red onion, diced • 3 tablespoons of fresh cilantro, chopped • 3 lemons juiced • 2 limes • Salt and pepper • 1 can of mandarin oranges • 1/4 cup of sliced green onions • 1/4 cup of sliced poblano chili • Olive oil INSTRUCTIONS Cut the fish into small chunks and add to a glass or stainless-steel bowl. Add the lemon juice and the juice from the mandarin oranges. Make sure the fish is fully emerged in juice. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, possibly longer. Marinating the fish in citrus cooks the fish. Check fish by breaking a chunk apart. If it’s done, it will easily flake apart, as if it were cooked. If it’s not, keep marinading longer until it’s done. Once “cooked”, strain the fish from the juice. Add back to a new bowl. Juice the 2 limes over the top of the fish. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Gently toss to combine. Add the tomato, mandarin oranges, red onion, poblano chili, green onions and cilantro. Toss gently to combine. Serve with your choice or cracker or chips or use a fork. It’s up to you.

INGREDIENTS • 6 oz. cooked shrimp, chopped chunky • 1/2 t curry • 1/3 c celery, chopped • 1/2 c green apple, chopped • 1-2 T Serrano pepper, chopped fine • 1 t mayonnaise • 1 t mustard • 1 t cilantro, chopped fine • 1/4 c red onion, chopped fine • 1 clove, minced garlic • Salt and pepper
INSTRUCTIONS Mix mayonnaise, mustard, and curry in a bowl. Add chopped shrimp, apple, celery, onion, and pepper. Salt and pepper to taste.
