Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes.

In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love, and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday.

Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years.

While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some gorgeous local homes that boast beautiful designs, get some insights into the life as a designer, get some tips on how to make it comfortable, and meet some local leaders building a home in our community.

Gilbert Resident, Dr. Cara Crist, receives special honor The non-profit 48 Arizona Women and the Arizona Historical Society have selected the 48 Most Intriguing Women of Arizona for 2022, among them Gilbert resident Dr. Cara Christ, the longest serving Arizona Director of Health Services.

Celebrity Fight Night was founded by Valley businessman Jimmy Walker in 1994 and has been one of the most successful fundraising events in Arizona and the country, with monies raised going to Barrows Neurological Institute. The event now enters a new era as Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson and Richard J. Stephenson have stepped in to voluntarily lead the organization to new heights, with all raised funds now going to benefit Gateway for Cancer Research.

“The origins of our long-time support of Fight Night are good friendships at the board level, good friendships serving with Jimmy Walker… and Sean Currie, of course, who has run it for a long, long, time,” explains Richard, who founded Cancer Treatment Centers of America in honor of his mother. Thirty years later, he founded Gateway for Cancer Research.

Richard says, “It conducts the research around the world which should be conducted but is not often funded because it doesn’t seem to have immediacy, and that is a huge mistake.

The immediacy sits in those garages and other small operations which have breakthrough ideas that can’t get the major funding. We fund those early phases.” Gateway for Cancer Research has provided $100 million in funding to start-ups which have gone on to gain support from major pharma or interested industries and get to the cancer patient’s bedside quickly, helping to prolong or save lives.

Richard then turned the comments over to his wife, Stacie for further insight. “It really was a merge and new mandate…

Basically the timing had come also for the CFN Organization with the passing of Muhammad (Ali),” says Dr. Stacie, who is the CEO of VibrantDoc, Chair of Functional Medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers of America and Vice Chair for Gateway for Cancer Research. “They didn’t have the direction and the passion or his celebrity behind them anymore and that was becoming a little bit of a struggle.” She relays that the mission is critical, and the health issue of cancer touches every person at some point during their lives.

The Stephensons have witnessed years of good work by Celebrity Fight Night and recognized its enormous philanthropic presence here and across the country. Through conversations with Walker and Currie, the couple will now carry on the legacy of Celebrity Fight Night under its new name, Gateway Celebrity Fight Night. Although Walker has moved on to another passion project, Currie has taken on the position of executive director at Gateway for Cancer Research. The huge event that attracts celebrities and attention from around the globe will take place Saturday, March 12 at JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa. The philanthropic couple owns homes in several places around the world and Dr. Stacie loves that she can play with different styles in each of their homes. The Stephensons call Paradise Valley home for part of the year and have created a gorgeous and peaceful retreat. “When we were first married, Dick said to me, ‘Do you want to look for a home in Arizona?’ And I am not a desert person. I love being by the water. But I actually fell in love out here… The mountains, the climate and the people!”

“Our main view in our living room is literally the full span of Camelback Mountain,” says Dr. Stacie. “It is just stunning, and that is this home.” Over the years they have incorporated personalized design touches. Richard loves the soaring 20-foot ceilings and Dr. Stacie appreciates great lighting and lighting fixtures.

“The home has seven fireplaces – All unique, all different and all Texas limestone,” Dr. Stacie says. “I’m an absolute fireplace nut and my designers and my builders thought I was crazy when I kept adding more fireplaces to the home.” She says the fireplaces have a Scottish look about them.

Marble is thoughtfully incorporated throughout the home, too. The dining room includes a stately beamed ceiling and one of the main archways is imported from Italy and includes a touch of gothic design. “It’s a very interesting home,” says Dr. Stacie.

“It’s a little bit eclectic. It’s got a bit of a Tuscany feel and some Moroccan feel.”

“It took years to install all the marble as well as the wood,” adds Richard. “The doors are three or four inches thick, and not just the front door, but the cabinet doors, too. They’re extraordinarily well-crafted and European… This was the dream house of a major builder here. He worked 12 years to build this house!” The incorporation of an infinity pool is the perfect addition that is an asset to the surrounding views.

Ever wonder what the new and upcoming interior designers are up to? We might be picking out fabric or comparing color swatches from time to time, but that's not all that an interior design internship entails. Hi, I’m Gretchen, studying Interior Design at Arizona State University, also soon to-be-graduate in May 2022! Read on to learn about my day as an interior design intern for Casita & Co. in Gilbert, Arizona.

our client’s for a presentation, order samples for material boards, or work on 2D drawings on CAD (computer-aided design) and 3D modeling simultaneously. Having multiple projects to work on drives the way we tackle each task, so no day is the same, always keeping us alert.

Okay I know what you’re thinking, “Wow, that’s not early at all!” I’m sure my classmates get up much earlier, but lucky for me, being a Gilbert resident, I don’t have to account for much travel time to get to the Casita & Co. office. On my way there, I like to stop for some coffee. We’re all coffee lovers in the studio, some of our favorite spots are Casita Coffee, Bergies Coffee Roast House, and Liberty Market.

At this time, we’re trying to get to a point where we can take a lunch break and also contemplate what we want to eat that day. With our studio in such a prime location in downtown Gilbert, we have lots of options to choose from each day. Some of our favorite lunch spots are Joe’s Real BBQ , Salad and Go, and Joyride Taco Shop. We’ll occasionally make an exception for the new Flower Child in Gilbert, they’re a little farther from us but they offer curbside pickup which is convenient for us on the go designers.

By this time I’m caffeinated, well fed (I try not to skip meals, even when I’m busy!), and I’m dressed for another productive day. On work days we dress pretty casual, business casual for meetings, and on site visits we make sure to keep an extra pair of tennis shoes in our trunks. When I arrive at the office, we say our good morning’s and we like to catch up on all that’s been happening in our lives before jumping into our work. It’s nice checking in with each other, knowing that we’re all doing good.

If I have class: I’m doing similar things that I do at my internship, except that we are only working on one project for the whole semester and the client situation is hypothetical ( so is the client budget!). We’re researching our clients and finding out not only what they want, but also what they actually need to improve their way of living, working, or maintaining their well-being.

We have field trips to spaces that were designed by professionals in order to study and gain inspiration for our own projects. The research and site context is important for us to understand, so then our design process gets easier as it develops. Technicality also comes into play in the design process; drafting accurate plans as a means of communication with the

The temperatures are rising already. Are you ready? At this time each year, everyone is thinking pretty much the same thing: “How can we keep our homes that dreamy 72 degrees without breaking the bank?” Andrew Jauss, co-owner of FACT HVAC, has been hard at work helping families in the East Valley answer this question for over 20 years. A legacy heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) professional, Andrew

1. SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE BEFORE SUMMER There are a lot of terms for this service including preventive maintenance, seasonal maintenance, or simply a PM. We call ours a FACT Check. Regardless of the name, this service is designed to help prevent premature breakdowns of your HVAC system. By addressing a small issue now, you can avoid a much larger and more costly problem down the road.

2. CHANGE THE FILTERS Air filters are the first step in helping you maintain a clean and healthy indoor environment. How often should you change your air filter? The simple answer is this, the more often you change them the cleaner your air will be and your A/C will run more efficiently.

If you have allergies or pets and you use a high quality air filter, we recommend replacing it every 30 days.

3. CHECK YOUR THERMOSTAT First, if your thermostat has batteries, replace them before summer. As simple as this sounds, we have had many calls for a defective thermostat and when we arrived at the home it was nothing more than dead batteries. Save yourself some money and pop in a fresh set. Second, if you don’t have one already, look into installing a smart thermostat. There are a lot of options on the market and many of them work with an app on your phone that can notify you when there is an issue with your A/C system.

It can literally mean life or death if your system goes down. “Just like with our cars, routine maintenance can save thousands of dollars in major repairs.” Here are some tips Andrew suggested to help us all have a cooler summer.

4. INSTALL A DRAIN LINE SAFET Y SWITCH A/C systems not only cool our homes in the summer but they also work as dehumidifiers drawing moisture out of the air. This produces a lot of condensation and the drain line needs to clear all of that moisture out of your house. When your drain line clogs it can lead to costly water damage. By installing a safety switch it can detect a clogged line and shut down the A/C system before it causes a major leak.

5. CLEAR DEBRIS FROM AROUND THE SYSTEM A simple action you can take is to clear any items, debris or gunk from around your outdoor condenser. This allows your system to freely circulate air which helps with energy efficiency as well as helping to prevent premature wear on the different components of the system.

6. IMPORTANT FINAL TIP One final reminder from Andrew, whomever you choose to help with you HVAC system this season, “Only hire an HVAC company that is licensed, bonded and insured.” It really does make a difference. Wishing you all a 72 degree summer!

Christensen founded his Chandler company in 2016 with one pickup truck and an old landscape trailer. Since then, Super Junk Removal has grown into a full-service junk removal company with multiple trucks and crews working across the Valley.

“Other services we provide are small demolition jobs, parking lot portering, and pressure washing services,” Christensen says, adding that he launched the pressure washing side of his business a 20-plus years ago.

Super Junk Removal is a family-owned and -operated company; with the exception of one loyal employee who has been with Christensen since the beginning, his team is made up of family or extended family.

Christensen, who enjoys spending his free time with family and playing ice hockey with his two older sons, says he takes great pride in offering a muchneeded service to others, and helping people to get more organized, one truckload of removed items at a time.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in

New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.

My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage.

I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach

is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home.

I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.

If someone were to ask how you are doing, odds are, you would simply reply with “busy.” Because, well, we are a society of busy. Between work, school, extra-curricular activities, appointments, errands, housework… We are all in a constant state of frenzy and chaos. And the thought of maybe trying to get in a meal or two … Who has time for that?!

As a result of this “busy,” we are often put in a position to choose what takes priority. Clearly grocery shopping and soccer practice aren’t optional; thus, this doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for other things, such as family game nights, or even a full night of sleep on most days. And while this is very common, and even normal for most families, it is certainly not ideal.

There might be a few really important things that are getting missed out on because of a busy lifestyle.

F A M I LY F U N :

One of the things to get lowest priority in a family’s busy schedule is time for fun. Keep in mind, family fun does not have to include outlandish or expensive outings, but rather can consist of boardgames or movie nights. Scheduling a family night at least a couple times a month provides opportunity for laughter and invaluable memories. This activity should most certainly be moved up on the priority list.

Making time for family connection and collaboration is crucial for the family bond. It is helpful to schedule these events on the calendar, the same way you would for other obligations, so that they don’t get pushed to the wayside… A few things to consider adding to the family calendar:

Getting lost in the hustle and bustle of daily life often prevents quality and intentional communication from taking place between family members. However, a lack of communication often breeds conflict, misunderstandings, and disconnect.

Try to schedule out a few minutes per day to check in with each member of the family to foster connection. Additionally, consider scheduling family meetings a couple times per month to proactively open up lines of communication.

It takes vulnerability for someone to express they no longer want to live or are struggling to find hope. Approaching this person with kindness and understanding will result in more honest answers. Those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts may feel shameful, alone, and like they are burdening their friends and family.

Professional Help

Seek out professional help when you don’t know what to do or how to help.

Therapy is a great option when you are not in an active crisis and want ongoing care. Look for a therapist specializing in suicide and make sure they have it listed as a specialty.
