ESIGNER AND OWNER OF BEING DAPPER AND THE

HOUSE OF DONALDSON, JC DONALDSON HAS ALWAYS HAD IMPECCABLE TASTE IN FASHION. From the time he was a baby, he was stepping out in style. In addition to dressing Ari and Jonah Levin for the September cover of Gilbert Lifestyle, he also dresses gentlemen globally. “I have always been in a dress shirt and tie since I was months old!” says Donaldson. He points to Tom Ford as his personal style icon because of his timeless designs made with bit of extravagance. Like Ford, Donaldson’s designs reflect sophistication, refinement

and occasionally a touch of vintage class. In 2011, Donaldson started as a fashion blogger while attending college in Texas. After moving to Arizona, he started making men’s accessories for clothiers in 2016. He followed that experience by designing graphic tees with dapper inspirational typography and designs that could be worn with or without a jacket. He dubbed them “gentlemen T-shirts.” “I then joined the Phoenix Fashion Week fashion bootcamp program where I went from a streetwear brand to a contemporary brand launching my first collection in 2018.” He continues, “Actually Being Dapper was my mother's idea and, when I launched my collection, my entire family came out to support me. I’m very grateful for them.” Being Dapper is now as much a clothing company as it is a lifestyle. Donaldson now designs gentlemen’s suits for the Polo Party and Kentucky Derby, and for players in the NFL and MLB. Being Dapper ready-to-wear items are available through his site at https://beingdapper. com/ and Donaldson will soon be adding tuxedos and suit rental options at Being Dapper, too. “We do offer custom suiting on the site as well,” says the designer. “Just click the custom suiting icon, and follow the steps, to get measured. Then reach out to us through e-mail and we can set up a one-to-one style session to get a custom piece made. You can always check out our new pieces on Instagram at @being_dapper and at @houseofdonaldson for custom clothing.”

EVERY ONCE IN A BLUE MOON ARIZONA GETS A CREATIVE MIND THAT MOVES INTO THE ARTISTIC SCENE AND MAKES EVERYONE SIT UP AND TAKE NOTICE. That happened last year when Ari Levin relocated to the Valley to take the position as executive director of the Madison Center for the Arts in North Central Phoenix. Levin previously had his own show in Las Vegas called “Xtreme Magic,” and produced and directed the opening of the 2007 NBA All-Star Game with Kobe Bryant. He has produced and directed for Paramount Studios, CNN and the BBC, as well as for the Lifetime Achievement Awards for Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Goldie Hawn and Jodie Foster and more than 30 episodes of Oprah’s “Where Are They Now?” He is a current member of the Broadway Directors and Choreographers Union and spent the last 20 years as the writer, executive producer and director of ShoWest which evolved into CinemaCon. The celebrated producer and ASU alum now calls Gilbert home. “When we first moved here, we rented in Scottsdale for a year,” explains Levin. “Then when we were looking to buy, the crazy market caused everything to go $50-100,000 over asking price. We extended our search and found a beautiful house on the lake in Gilbert.” “There are still a lot of places I need to visit, but so far, I've really liked going to San Tan Village and the Old Town area!” Levin says. While he gets acclimated to Gilbert, there is a lot of thoughtful work to be done at the Madison. Levin explains, “It’s owned by the school district. We’re part of the school district and we’re governed by the school district, but we’re different.” As he begins to bring never-before-seen-in-Arizona programming, he considers what a group of performers has to offer students in the way of engaging instruction and master classes. UPCOMING SHOWS AT THE MADISON: + Jimmy Buffett's Escape to Margaritaville September 16-19 + Potted Potter – The Unauthorized Harry Experience – October 28-30 + American Ballet Theatre Studio - November 14 + The Magical World of Santa’s Circus December 2-5 Looking forward to next year, Levin has big plans, too. “In 2022 I have the 25th farewell tour of ‘Rent’ coming here,” adds Levin.

BACK STAGE (CONTINUED) WHEN WE SET OUT TO CREATE A PHOTO SHOOT FOR THIS FASHION ISSUE, LITTLE DID WE KNOW WE WERE IN FOR A CRAZY JOURNEY THAT PLAYED OUT LIKE A SCENE FROM THE OSCAR-WINNING MOVIE, “LA LA LAND.” We already had our expert entertainment photographers from Blushing Cactus Photography. Then, through a fun series of events that went from an art gallery invite and interview, to a delicate dance of networking, we secured the Madison Center for the Arts for our photo shoot. Models? We needed Gilbert residents who could have fun on camera, and the Madison’s new executive director Ari Levin also has an acting background. It was a natural fit. His son, Barrett Honors College at ASU student, Jonah Levin is a model. The script was writing itself! I modeled years ago and l called in the help of my daughter who had also done modeling and acting. What would we wear? Top Arizona designer Angela Johnson graciously provided my daughter and I two whimsical dresses that make an upscale play off the “T-shirts and jeans” often casual dress aesthetic of Gilbert. The designer for the men, JC Donaldson was a familiar face from seeing his charming work at the Polo Championships. In the end, we let the unique magic of the Madison speak to us and we helped reveal some of its secrets through photos. All of us involved in the fashion shoot hope you enjoy our visual story!

I rummaged through the hard cover books of glamour shots, neatly placed on the coffee table. As I was frantically flipping through the endless pages of headshots, I found the cut of my 5 year old dreams. I showed my mom’s hairdresser, to which she replied, “That’s cute on the model, but it won’t look the same on you”. To which I replied, “ Yes it will”. And no it didn’t! As soon as she spun me around to the mirror, I cried and cried in disappointment! Needless to say this was the beginning of my bad hair decisions. As a child of the 80s and 90s it only got

Definitely didn’t look good on my 2 foot long neck! I was the one that everyone you saw me, my hair was a different color. Natural Instincts by Clairol was way too accessible! Now bangs seem to be all the rage. I cut my bangs a couple weeks ago, once again in hopes I would be transformed into my best self! Specifically, Maggie Siff from Billions or Kelly Riley from Yellowstone. Even though I cut my bangs, I still do not look like a sexy badass. And now I can still hear my mom’s hairdresser from 40 years ago saying, “You won’t look the same.” And my still stubborn self saying, “Yes, it will”!

ALLISON COBURN @WYLDESALON | WYLDE SALON What beauty trends haunts you the most in your lifetime? For me I instantly knew, Perms! Do I really need to say more? Why did anyone feel the need to wrap their hair for hours with tight little rods and pour the most horrific rotten egg smelling liquid on their heads. Can you tell that I am scared from all the old lady perms I had to do in beauty school?! Then to make it worse they slapped tubs of gel on their curls after so they were so crunchy it felt like your hair could just snap right off! Finished with the huge fluffed up bangs to heaven! Can I get an AMEN for finally getting off that band wagon! Hopefully we will all think twice before we adopt another trend like that. Allison Coburn CONTINUED >

INFLUENCER LOCALS ONLY (CONTINUED)

Janessa Asher

JANESSA ASHER @BELEZAPURAMEDICAL | BELEZA PURA MEDICAL Oversized breasts and butts are all over Instagram, and “top” doctors are popping up with “specials” to offer the ideal body! What could go wrong? I worked in plastic surgery and felt “safe” to have breast implants. Six months later my body was taken over by Breast Implant Illness. Not one doctor diagnosed my illness. I removed my implants to save my own life. Not your ideal selfie! Thank goodness I found Beleza Pura and was able to naturally enhance my breasts again without the risks. My shape and confidence are back!

Jacqueline Bregar

JACQUELINE BREGAR FARMERS GILBERT Being a teen in the 80’s, I have experienced many fascinating fashion trends - big hair; bright neon flared miniskirts, tops and sweaters; shoulder pads; ruffled dresses, puffy sleeves; drop waisted belts and stonewashed denim among other interesting ensembles. However my biggest faux pas were leg warmers. This fashion disaster was probably born out of Olivia Newton John’s “let’s get physical” workout outfit - the bright colored high leg leotard and tights with matching leg warmers and headband. How leg warmers progressed to being worn as a general fashion trend beyond the workout outfit is intriguing… I’m embarrassed to have paraded around sporting jeans with leg warmers worn over the ankle throughout my teens. I can only hope that this trend died in the eighties, never to be revived! 28
