BRIGETTE PETERSON ENTHUSIASTICALLY EMBRACES ALL THAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT GILBERT

THE TOWN OF GILBERT HAS ELECTED ITS NEW MAYOR, BRIGETTE PETERSON. She served many years on the Town of Gilbert Town Council before resigning her position so she could run for mayor. As one might expect, Peterson has a unique and robust insight into the people and places that make Gilbert so special. Our mayor has called Gilbert home since 1995. “As big as Gilbert gets, as small as it stays,” Brigette Peterson explains. “People are friendly and know each other. The community is safe and vibrant and there is always something new to enjoy, whether it is a new store, restaurant or park.” Peterson’s immediate family includes her husband Mark Peterson, their daughter Jenn Hensley and son-in-law Shawn Hensley.

Peterson selected our most famous landmark that continues to be a welcoming beacon to all that visit Downtown Gilbert as her favorite. “My favorite place is Water Tower Plaza,” she says. “I can sit and look at the water tower and splash pad at any time of day or night. It is beautiful with the sun shining on the tower or all lit up in different colors in the evening.” Peterson also has some favorite Gilbert restaurants, although she notes that it is tough to select just one because there are so many great eateries in town. She singled out Sal’s Pizza for pizza and pasta, Dragon Wok for Chinese food, Sushi Brokers for sushi, Flancer’s for sandwiches and salads, and Liberty Market as her favorite go-to for any meal. Gilbert has been booming with development in the past two decades, and as much as the town has, it welcomes more businesses and services. “I would love to see a hotel that has conference center opportunities but also has local staycation features like a lazy river and water type amenities,” Peterson explains. “I believe this would be a great option for our businesses and residents.” As a long-time Gilbert resident, Peterson has seen a lot of change and meets many residents as well as tourists and visitors. “People that visit the Town of Gilbert always think we are a small community, they love the feel, and then when I share that we are over 260,000 residents, they are so surprised,” Peterson finishes. “We are the size of a city with the heart of a town!” CityLifestyle.com/Gilbert

5 tips to staying healthy in 2021 SAPPHIRE HEALTH & WELLNESS - GILBERT LIFESTYLE’S RECOMMENDED PRIMARY HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TIPS TO START THE NEW YEAR HEALTHY

1

vitamin d

Low vitamin D can make us vulnerable to infection, increase fatigue and depres-

sion. Spend some time outdoors, make sure to incorporate foods high in vitamin D (salmon, mushrooms, ricotta cheese, milk, etc.) or speak with your doctor about

2

supplementation. This may even help you fight off COVID-19!

make 2021 the year to focus on YOU Find an activity that you really enjoy and schedule time for it each week. Reduce your stress by

limiting exposure to the news to a maximum of 1 hour per day, journal daily to help process feelings, get adequate sleep, and utilize mindfulness or meditation apps on your phone for 5 minutes each morning. Most importantly, do not feel ashamed if you are struggling with hopelessness, depressed or anxiety. Reach out to your primary care provider and let them know how you feel. They have many resources to offer than can help your overall mental health.

3

physical activity

4

Getting at least 30 minutes of exercise per day will help reduce stress, blood pres-

sure and weight. You do not need a gym to work out. Utilize free resources on the internet, smart TV or social media to find exercises that you can do at home. Even better, find a buddy to join you and keep you accountable.

nutrition

What we eat can have a significant impact on our stress levels. Overindulging in sugar, caffeine or

alcohol can increase our anxiety and sluggishness and make depression worse. Make sure to incor-

porate a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and drink at least 64 ounces of water each day. Be mindful of “stress snacking” and try to cook at home for at least one meal per day. Eating with others can help prevent feeling isolated and practice mindful eating.

5

be proactive with your health Schedule your annual physical with your primary care provider. Health screenings based on age and

determined by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force help to identify health abnormalities before they become problematic. Your provider may also recommend vaccinations appropriate for your age. Prepare for your appointment by creating a list of questions or concerns for your provider, so that they can counsel you on ways to stay healthy and prevent chronic disease.
