Exploring Gallatin

Summer has always felt a little different to me in Gallatin.

Maybe it’s because this town holds so many memories. From growing up here to now having the privilege of serving as publisher of Gallatin City Lifestyle, I’ve watched our community grow, evolve and flourish while still holding onto the small-town charm that makes it so special.

July is a season of exploration. It’s a time to step away from the busyness of everyday life and embrace the adventures waiting just beyond our front doors. Sometimes those adventures are found on a weekend getaway, a day on Old Hickory Lake, an evening concert under the stars or a family road trip. Other times, they’re found in discovering a new local business, trying a restaurant you've never visited or taking a scenic drive through the beautiful countryside that surrounds us.

This month’s Summer Fun & Explore issue celebrates the spirit of adventure that makes summer so memorable. We’ve gathered ideas, destinations, experiences and local favorites designed to help you make the most of these long, sun-filled days.

As Gallatin continues to grow, one of my favorite things is seeing the blend of old and new. New businesses, new families and new opportunities continue to arrive, while the heart of this community remains rooted in the relationships, traditions and values that have defined Gallatin for generations. It's a reminder that exploration isn't always about going somewhere far away. Sometimes it's about rediscovering the place you call home.

As we celebrate Independence Day this month, I'm also reminded of how grateful I am for the freedoms we enjoy, the community we share and the countless individuals who work every day to make Gallatin such an incredible place to live, work and raise a family.

My hope for you this summer is simple: Make the memories. Take the trip. Watch the sunset. Spend time with the people you love. Support local businesses. Explore somewhere new. And don't let this beautiful season pass by without fully embracing it.

Because at the end of the day, it's not the destinations we remember most — it's the moments shared along the way.

Wishing you a joyful, safe and adventure-filled July.

CARRYING THE Lakeside Torch

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY AWEDADDYS BAR & GRILL

HOW MICHELLE GENTRY PRESERVES LEGACY AT AWEDADDYS BAR & GRILL
ARTICLE BY MADISON AICHELE

There’s a restaurant nestled in the Gallatin Marina on Old Hickory Lake that’s been part of the community’s story for more than 10 years. Awedaddys Bar & Grill has been inviting customers into its lakeside establishment every April through October since 2011.

The anticipation on opening day is palpable. For Michelle Gentry, who’s owned Awedaddys since 2023, there are always nerves as they prepare to open the doors.

Michelle says, “Once the familiar faces start rolling in, it’s like we never closed.”

Nerves turn to excitement as Awedaddys welcomes customers back with familiar favorites, as well as new additions to keep each season feeling fresh. This year, the restaurant debuted a tiki merch hut.

On opening, Michelle says, “I love getting back our veteran workers who are always so excited to come back home, as they say, and all the new faces who are experiencing Awedaddys for the first time.”

It’s that sense of home and belonging, along with famously-loved dishes and drinks, that has made Awedaddys an essential community establishment.

The Bushwacker is one of those irresistible, boozy beverages renowned among customers. With real ice cream and customizable toppings like snickerdoodle, peanut butter, and salted caramel, it’s no wonder the Awedaddy secret recipe has won best bushwacker on the lake.

Michelle says, “Laid back and Bushwacked is our slogan for a reason.”

The hand-breaded Cheese Styx stand out as another classic staple. Their classic menu line, “Often imitated but never duplicated,” does justice to the signature, cheesy delight.

The weekday specials are a big draw, featuring dishes not on the regular menu. Taco Tuesday offers fish, shrimp, pork, beef and chicken tacos, as well as nachos, chips, queso, guacamole and a two-for-one special on all Mexican beers. On Wing Wednesday, customers can get eight smoked wings with a 16-ounce draft. Thursday features All You Can Eat Catfish served with french fries, cole slaw and hushpuppies.

Sunday Brunch is a popular time to visit Awedaddys. Customers can enjoy a breakfast buffet, a special menu with items like stuffed strawberry french toast and hot chicken and waffles, plus a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar.

Awedaddys is also growing, with a pizza kitchen now open on weekends at the gas dock, and a food truck coming soon to keep the summer flavor going year-round.

says she knew then that it was more than work, it was purpose. She worked with Benke for more than 23 years.

“He was like a father to me, and I loved him dearly,” Michelle says.

When Michelle purchased Awedaddys from Benke, she wanted to continue the legacy of rich relationships and high-quality food he had begun. Benke passed away shortly after she became owner.

Awedaddys has lasted because it has always been more than just a restaurant — it's a place where people make memories.

Whether you’re coming with family for a weekday special, gathering with friends for happy hour or enjoying live music on the lake, Awedaddys sets the scene for summer experiences.

Michelle says, “Awedaddys has lasted because it has always been more than just a restaurant — it’s a place where people make memories.”

Michelle’s personal story encapsulates the heart of the Awedaddys name. The late Vern Benke hired her as a server at Grandstands in 2000. Michelle

“If these walls could talk, there would be many stories to be told about how someone has a core memory of an experience here at Awedaddys,” says Michelle. “What stands out the most to me was in 2023 when I took over the restaurant, and so many of our regulars and people in the community reached out to tell me that they were so thankful that I was able to keep the place open and a part of all their lives.”

Michelle says, “I love this place and the customers and crew, and I learn something new every day, and will continue to carry the torch for my family to have their own legacy one day. I want Awedaddys to be a longstanding staple of Gallatin for many years to come.”

DESIGNING THE Ultimate Staycation

INSIDE TAYLOR MILLIKEN’S VISIONARY APPROACH TO CREATING UNFORGETTABLE OUTDOOR RETREATS

Tennessee homeowners are changing the way they vacation.

Rising fuel prices, airfare and tourist crowds have caused a cultural shift: both natives and those who have recently called the Volunteer State their home are spending less on travel and investing more in their properties.

“Staycations” are becoming the new luxury, and at the heart of the experience is a premium outdoor summer escape.

No one understands the art of creating a staycation quite like Middle Tennessee native Taylor Milliken, CEO of Milosi. For more than 24 years, the family-owned company has been rooted in Middle Tennessee, designing outdoor spaces that reflect the region’s unique climate, lifestyle and love of gathering with family and friends. Milliken lives in Gallatin with his wife, Samantha, and their three children. His upbringing and family background are deeply woven into the company’s DNA — multiple family members work for Milosi and operate businesses throughout Gallatin and Sumner County.

Milliken’s secret to creating the ultimate backyard retreat? Start with a design and a team that understands your vision and fully manages the project, and put a plan in place to maintain the space.

“We seek to understand the wants, needs, and vision of our clients for the spaces they ask us to design and build during our design consultations,” says Milliken. “Always make sure you begin with the end in mind and design the entire space.

BEGIN WITH THE FOCAL POINT: THE POOL

“In almost every case, we are going to start with a pool when a client asks for the ultimate staycation,” Milliken says. “The second thing we are going to talk about is the outdoor kitchen and dining. When I think of vacations and memories made with friends and family, it always comes back to cooking and breaking bread together.”

One other pro tip Milliken recommends? Try to build out a pool bathroom if possible, so guests can avoid drying off and taking multiple trips into the house for a bathroom break.

DESIGN

OUTDOOR SPACES LIKE INTERIOR ROOMS

Milliken and his team map everything out with a core design philosophy of the backyard as an extension of the home.

Milliken says, “It’s all about creating separate intentional spaces similar to how your rooms are designed on the interior of a home.”

Functionality is also at the foundation of Milosi’s design process. Milliken encourages homeowners to think beyond aesthetics and focus on how they’ll use the space, like hosting holiday gatherings, relaxing around a fire pit, enjoying pool days with the kids or sharing meals with friends. The best staycation retreats are designed around the way people live, not just the way they look.

“If you’re playing host, I always recommend getting a little larger cooking space,” shares Milliken. He also suggests considering an outdoor sink, a warming drawer (if you have the space), an icemaker and an outdoor fridge. These components cut down on (or eliminate entirely) multiple trips in and out of the house, keeping you outside with your guests.

Milosi almost always designs outdoor retreats with covered dining areas.

“It gets very hot in Tennessee during our summer months,” Milliken notes. “Shade helps families enjoy the outdoors more when they can get a break from the sun.”

SMALL BACKYARD, BIG STAYCATION POTENTIAL

A smaller backyard footprint is not a dealbreaker for creating the ultimate outdoor retreat; it just requires more creativity. Milosi designers create solutions to maximize limited square footage, like scaled-down pools, dual-functional spaces and

strategic privacy landscaping to ensure every choice serves a purpose while still delivering an elevated experience.

“It’s all about scale,” says Milliken. “We have built some of my favorite projects in tiny backyards. The beautiful thing about designing in a small space is that it forces you to get really creative, and allows you to make every square inch special and intentional.”

THE ULTIMATE STAYCATION: FUN, RELAXATION AND CONNECTION

The addition of greenery and florals are designed to enhance an outdoor space by embracing natural elements.

Milliken says, “Pots and containers are growing in popularity. I liken this to getting a new outfit or a new haircut. You can change the flowers out two to five times a year to provide that new look to your patio, porch, and pool deck.”

The Milosi team focuses on creating environments that bring together the three things homeowners value in a staycation: fun, relaxation and connection. While pools serve as the centerpiece for summer fun, integrated features like fire pits, outdoor dining areas and gathering spaces extend the experience beyond a day spent in the water.

These outdoor living spaces become the backdrop for holiday meals, casual weeknight dinners, intimate conversations around the fire and multi-generational celebrations with family and friends. The result is more than a beautiful backyard, it’s a destination for making memories, fostering connection and enjoying the ultimate staycation right outside your back door.

BUILDING A COHESIVE PLAN

Milosi designers have noted an increasing demand for full outdoor living design upfront, and seen a rise of integrated outdoor kitchens, resort-style pools and covered outdoor living rooms with screened-in patios. A recent Milosi project featured two covered patios, a pool, spa, sauna, fire pit, outdoor shower, ping pong table, glass roll-up garage doors leading in and out of the gym, a putting green and a lower patio with a fire pit and family-size couch.

Because of the complexity of resort-style builds, it has become more critical than ever to work with a design partner who understands how outdoor spaces are actually used day-to-day. In regions like Middle Tennessee, that also means accounting for challenges such as humidity, pests, stormwater and rapidly changing seasons. These factors directly impact both design decisions and long-term usability of the space.

MAINTAIN YOUR STAYCATION RETREAT

You can build the most beautiful staycation spot in the world, but if you don’t have a plan to maintain the space, it will quickly add stress to your preparation time, reduce your usability, and in worst-case scenarios, damage your investment.

For someone that uses their outdoor living space constantly, it’s important to engage a partner who provides regular maintenance. This includes mowing, landscaping, seasonal color installations, irrigation services, pool maintenance and hardscape repairs.

You will not only get to enjoy it yourself but also get to share it with those you love the most.

“Hosts want to do what they do best — host,” says Milliken. “When the days leading up to a gathering are spent on yard work and upkeep, it takes away from the enjoyment of the experience. We consistently see that homeowners who invest in maintenance tend to use and enjoy their outdoor spaces more often.”

BECOME THE STAYCATION GATHERING PLACE

The growing interest in backyard retreats reflects a larger shift in how homeowners want to experience their summers, with many choosing to make their property the central hub for family and friends. The ultimate staycation space is designed to become the backdrop for everyday moments and important milestones alike.

“We see a lot of grandparents, as well as young families, looking to build a really special outdoor space,” says Milliken. “Our house was the house that everyone came to growing up. That is, to me, the biggest benefit. You will not only get to enjoy it yourself but also get to share it with those you love the most.”

Summer Seafood Gazpacho

A REFRESHING, CHILLED, SUMMER FORWARD SOUP THAT PACKS IN PROTEIN AND FIBER!

This summer seafood gazpacho screams summer and is the perfect, refreshing meal, snack or appetizer to beat the heat - whether you’re entertaining or enjoying a quiet meal with family. It’s packed with some of the season’s most flavorful produce and provides satisfying fiber and protein to help keep you feeling full, while still being light enough to enjoy on the hottest of summer days. Plus, there is no need to turn on the oven or the stove, keeping your kitchen (and you) cool as a cucumber! You can enjoy this chilled soup as is, or add toppings like chopped jalapeños, cilantro, or creme fraiche and scoop it up with tortilla chips!

Ingredients: (yields ~8 C gazpacho)

• 8 large tomatoes

• 1 large cucumber

• 2 cloves garlic

• 1 small sweet onion

• 1 jalapeño pepper

• ½ tsp hot sauce

• 3 Tbsp lemon juice

• 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar

• 1 ¼ tsp kosher salt

• ½ tsp ground black pepper

• 2 Tbsp parsley (fresh or dried)

• 8 oz lump crab meat

• 8 oz cooked shrimp, chilled (about 8-12 large shrimp)

*Optional suggested toppings include: cilantro, tortilla chips, chopped jalapeños, creme fraiche, or additional parsley.

Directions:

1. Cut tomatoes into large chunks, approximately 6-8 pieces each. Set aside.

2. Slice cucumber into thick slices. Set aside.

3. Mince garlic. Set aside.

4. Chop onion into medium sized pieces. Set aside.

5. Slice jalapeño pepper in half, lengthwise. Remove seeds if you prefer less heat. Chop jalapeño pepper and set aside.

6. Add tomatoes to large food processor. You may need to add about half of the tomatoes, pulse for a few seconds and then add the remaining tomatoes depending on the size of your food processor. Pulse tomatoes until chunky and slightly pureed. You will continue to puree the tomatoes once the additional ingredients are added, so do not pulse until completely smooth.

7. Add remaining vegetables (cucumber, garlic, onion, jalapeño pepper) to food processor with the tomatoes. Add hot sauce, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper and parsley. Replace the lid and pulse to desired consistency – the gazpacho should be pureed, but still somewhat chunky and not completely smooth.

8. Store in an airtight container and chill in the fridge for at least one hour before serving. If not serving right away, this gazpacho can be made in advance and stored in the fridge overnight or for a few days until ready to serve. If making this gazpacho in advance, purchase fresh seafood or thaw frozen within 1 day of serving to keep seafood fresh and store seafood separately, only adding when ready to serve. When ready to serve, chop the shrimp and add approximately 1-2 oz chopped shrimp and ~1 oz crab meat to each bowl. You can add optional toppings, such as chopped cilantro, chopped jalapeños, tortilla chips, creme fraiche and an additional sprinkle of parsley, if preferred. Enjoy!

Note: This gazpacho can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up for 4 days, without the seafood. Store seafood separately and add when ready to consume.

Creating Magical Memories

As the Owner of You Can Fly Travels, LLC—a Disney Earmarked travel agency specializing in Disney destinations, cruises, all-inclusive resorts, Europe and custom curated vacations— Kim Thompson knows a thing or two about planning a Disney trip people will treasure for a lifetime.

When asked what families should consider while planning their summer vacation, Thompson shared her knowledge to help families experience the magic they’ve dreamt of without breaking the bank.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST OVERLOOKED WAYS FAMILIES CAN SAVE A BIT OF MONEY—OR GET WAY MORE VALUE—WITHOUT CUTTING OUT THE MAGIC?

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that saving money means sacrificing the experience, and that really is not the case. Timing can make a huge difference. Traveling during slightly lower demand weeks can often save families thousands while still giving them amazing weather and experiences.

“We also encourage families to focus on value instead of trying to do every single add on. Sometimes staying at the right Disney resort with included perks gives more value than overspending on upgrades that may not matter to their family.”

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO KEEP THE FUN AND LEAVE THE OVERWHELM OF TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING BEHIND?

“The biggest advice we give families is this—you do not have to do everything to have an incredible Disney vacation.

“Some of the best trips are the ones where families slow down enough to actually enjoy each other. Disney can absolutely feel overwhelming if you go into it thinking every attraction, restaurant and experience has to happen in one trip.”

KIM THOMPSON SHARES HOW TO CURATE AN UNFORGETTABLE DISNEY TRIP
Kim Thompson

WHAT IS YOUR GOLDEN RULE FOR PACING A DISNEY DAY SO THAT EVERYONE—FROM TODDLERS TO GRANDPARENTS—STAYS HAPPY, HYDRATED, AND SMILING?

“Build in breaks before you think you need them.

“That one simple shift changes everything. Disney days are long, hot and overstimulating, especially for little ones and grandparents. We always recommend families take a midday reset, whether that is going back to the resort, having a relaxed sit-down meal or just spending time by the pool.”

WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE ‘HIDDEN GEM’ ACTIVITIES THAT DON’T EVEN REQUIRE A PARK TICKET?

“Watching the Electrical Water Pageant from the Polynesian or Grand Floridian area is incredibly underrated. Resort hopping during the holidays is one of my favorite things to recommend because the Disney resorts are stunningly themed and each one feels completely different.

“Disney Springs is another favorite because there is so much live entertainment, dining, shopping and unique experiences without needing a park ticket.”

ARE THERE ANY COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS YOU HEAR FROM FAMILIES WHO WANT TO PLAN A DISNEY TRIP?

“A lot of families think Disney has become ‘too complicated’ or that they have missed the window to afford or enjoy it.

“The truth is, Disney looks very different for every family. There is no one-sizefits-all way to do it. Our role is helping families navigate the options, simplify the process and help create a plan that works for their family.”

IF YOU COULD GIVE A FAMILY JUST ONE PIECE OF HEARTFELT ADVICE TO MAKE SURE THEIR NEXT TRIP FEELS TRULY MAGICAL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“Put the phone down sometimes.

“The magical moments families remember years later are usually not the perfectly

The biggest advice we give families is this —you do not have to do everything to have an incredible Disney vacation.

planned ones. It is the laughter while waiting for a ride, the excitement on a child’s face seeing the castle for the first time or even the late-night conversations walking back to the resort.

“Do not spend the entire trip chasing perfection. Be present enough to actually feel the magic while you are in it.”

IF A FAMILY WANTED TO WORK WITH YOU TO BOOK THEIR NEXT DISNEY VACATION, HOW COULD THEY REACH OUT TO YOU?

WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

“Families can reach out through You Can Fly Travels on social media, by email or directly through our website. We start with a conversation about what their family enjoys, their budget, travel goals and what kind of experience they want to create.

“From there, we guide them through resort options, park planning, dining, Lightning Lane strategies and all the details that can quickly become overwhelming. We stay involved before, during and after travel so families feel supported every step of the way.”

Picnics Pairings

CREATE A LIVELY, NUTRITIOUS, AND TASTY SENSATION AT YOUR NEXT COZY PICNIC

ARTICLE BY KIM COSTA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Have you been eyeing a breathtaking view or a luscious green patch near a waterscape? For special times with your favorite people, nothing says warm weather fun like a picnic. Follow these tips for preparation ideas.

Ambiance:

Throw pillows are a must.  Pull them from your couches or invest in outdoor pillows that can be used repeatedly.  A large throw is also essential to protect from moist ground and grass stains.  Bring your favorite tunes with one of the many available portable speakers or unplug and enjoy the sounds of nature. Cut flowers add a wow factor.

Accompaniments:

A cheese plate with fruit is the perfect start to your picnic fare. As with the cheese, your drink selections should coordinate with the main dish. For salads, pair accoutrements with the dressing in mind. A lemony herb vinaigrette dressing goes well with smooth cheeses and tart beverages such as lemonade, prosecco, or sauvignon blanc.

Enjoy your perfect picnic!

Gear:

You don’t have to own a picnic basket to have a picnic. But if you do bring a basket, make sure to have some way to chill your perishables and drinks. Reusable silverware, plastic wine or drink cups, and plates often come with a picnic basket set, but can also be purchased separately. Keeping it elegant, but easy (and cool) is the key!

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

FEATURING JEN COHEN

Discover the full 10% Target Mindset framework.

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Birdwatching Made Simple

EXPERT TIPS TO MAKE BACKYARD BIRDING A FASCINATING AND PEACEFUL PART OF YOUR LIFE.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Thinking of putting up a bird feeder? You’re not alone. Backyard birding is the second most popular hobby in the U.S.—right behind gardening. Bob Gors of Wild Birds Unlimited in Macomb, MI, shares expert tips to help you get started—and get results.

START WITH THE RIGHT SETUP

If you’re new to bird feeding, don’t overcomplicate it. Bob recommends starting with a tray feeder, either pole-mounted or hung. “It’s accessible to the widest range of birds,” he says, “and it lets you experiment with different seed blends.”

Before setting up, take a look at your yard. Birds prefer to feed near trees or shrubs where they can perch and scan for predators. “If your yard is wide open, it’s going to be harder to attract them,” Bob notes.

Quick Tip: Place your feeder about 15 feet from trees or shrubs to give birds a safe place to wait their turn.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEED—AND SKIP THE FILLERS

Not all bird seed is created equal. Bob advises avoiding blends with fillers like milo, wheat, or oats. “Those are agricultural leftovers. Most birds won’t eat them.”

Each Wild Birds Unlimited store owner customizes their seed blends, based on the birds in each store’s specific area. Their blends contain no fillers—just high-quality ingredients birds actually eat. They’re available in no-mess varieties—no shells, no waste. “With standard seed, up to 40% of the weight of the bag is shells,” Bob says. “No-mess is 100 percent pure bird food.”

Quick Tip: Choose fresh, unscented, unflavored seed. Birds don’t need additives—just what they’d eat in nature. Check the ingredients on the bag: sunflower should be the first ingredient—since it’s the seed most birds love.

KEEP UNWANTED GUESTS AWAY

Squirrels causing trouble? Try safflower seed. “It tastes bitter to squirrels but attracts cardinals, grosbeaks, titmice, nuthatches and chickadees,” Bob says. Hot pepper blends also work—birds can’t taste the heat, but mammals can.

To deter large birds like starlings, Bob recommends using a cage around tube feeders to limit access. Tube feeders with small perches help discourage bigger birds. For tidier feeding, seed cylinders—compressed seed—are a great low-mess option.

Quick Tip: “Start simple,” Bob advises. “Watch what’s happening in your yard, then adjust as needed.” Unlike loose seed, cylinders make the birds work harder—and give you longer-lasting views of the birds.

SPOT BIRD BEHAVIOR (AND BACKYARD DRAMA)

Once your feeder’s up, the show begins.

“Different species act differently,” Bob explains. “Cardinals are typically the first and last birds of the day to the feeder. Male hummingbirds are very territorial and will defend ‘their’ feeder. Chickadees come to the feeder in a flash; they have a grab-and-go strategy. “In our backyard, orioles and bluebirds battle over live mealworms,” he adds. “The female bluebird often holds her ground.”

Quick Tip: You don’t need to track every species. “Just sit back with a cup of coffee and watch,” Bob says. “You’ll start noticing more than you’d expect.”

SEASONAL CHANGES TO EXPECT

Feeder activity increases in summer, thanks to fledglings. “By July, your bird population has basically doubled,” Bob says. At the same time, some favorites—like male orioles—start their fall migration as early as July.

One common myth? That goldfinches leave in winter. “They stay put,” Bob says. “But the males molt into drab-colored feathers, so people often don’t recognize them.”

Quick Tip: Keep feeding in winter. “Some of the best bird watching happens in the colder months—different species of birds visit us in the winter.”

HOW TO ATTRACT SPECIFIC BIRDS

Want cardinals? Use tray feeders or tube feeders with U-shaped perches. “They’re heavier birds,” Bob says. “Standard tube feeders are hard for them to use.”

Hoping for bluebirds? They prefer park-like settings. If your yard fits, try a nesting box with a 1.5-inch entrance, and offer live mealworms far away from the nest box.

Hummingbirds? Stick to sugar water—no red dye needed. “And expect a show,” Bob adds. “Males are fiercely territorial at the feeder.”

Wild Birds Unlimited carries feeders tailored to specific birds, but Bob and his team focus on fit. “We ask about your yard, your goals, and guide you from there.”

Quick Tip: Not sure what birds are in your area? Ask your local Wild Birds Unlimited shop.

WHY BIRD WATCHING STICKS

Bob says many customers started birding during the pandemic—and never stopped. “They looked out the window and realized something was there,” he says. It’s remained part of their lives: one couple told Bob they still start every morning on the porch with coffee and birdsong. “It became a ritual that many people now cherish,” Bob says.
