Flying High, Dreaming Big

LIBERTY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE CELEBRATES AVIATION PROGRAM MILESTONE

Ask any pilot about taking to the skies for the very first time and they’ll tell you it’s a thrill that stays with you forever. And for one extraordinary Sumner County high school graduate, that first flight is a moment she’ll never forget! Prepare for take-off with us as we sit down with Liberty Creek High School graduate Addison DeWitt to talk about her aviation journey–one that started early in a high school classroom and ultimately led her to the wide open skies.

Addison DeWitt

GL: WHERE DID YOUR PASSION FOR FLYING COME FROM, AND WHEN WAS THE MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO FLY?

AD: I always loved traveling and exploring new places. So, when I started the Intro to Aerospace class [at Liberty Creek High School] and discovered my love for flight, pursuing a career in the field just seemed like a perfect fit. The moment I knew I wanted to fly would probably be my first flight in a small plane. It was almost two years ago with the EAA Young Eagles Organization, and I was sitting in the right seat of a Cessna 172. I loved the feeling of being able to see out of the cockpit and into the sky.

GL: WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF YOUR GROUND STUDIES AND FLIGHT TRAINING, AND HOW DID YOU INCORPORATE OR BALANCE THAT INTO YOUR OTHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDIES?

AD: I began learning basic flight knowledge in class, and then I used Sporty’s online courses to accelerate my progress. I started formal training with Jet Access [at the Gallatin airport], flying three times a week, weather permitting. Balancing school and flight lessons was challenging, but I rose to the challenge with AP courses, exams and college planning.

GL: WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS, AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT FLYING?

AD: I’m considering a career as an international airline captain; this would allow me to continue traveling and exploring the world while being in control of the sky, which is an exhilarating feeling that’s hard to put into words. While my career path is still tentative and dependent on opportunities, I’m excited about the prospect of pursuing this goal.

GL: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER STUDENTS WHO MIGHT HAVE AN INTEREST IN AVIATION?

AD: More than half of those who start flight training end up quitting. I think the most important thing to remind these students is how rewarding it will be once it’s over. The process is not easy, and there are definitely moments that make you question why you even started. But, once it’s over, you’ll appreciate every part, even the worst ones.

GL: WHO HAS BEEN INFLUENTIAL OR A MENTOR IN YOUR AVIATION JOURNEY?

AD: The aviation community in Gallatin has been so supportive throughout my journey. My original aviation teacher, Chris Peterson, has been there to provide advice and encouragement every step of the way. My flight instructor, Luke Sweeney, was incredibly thorough and helpful throughout flight training. Every pilot and crew member I have met has been so willing to share their experience and guide me toward getting my license.

“Aviation provides so many opportunities, and I am looking forward to being able to do for others what this community has done for me.”

LUXURY UNLEASHED

K9 Resorts Luxury Pet Hotel Arrives in Gallatin
ARTICLE BY EMMA BALKENBUSH

Pet parents know that sinking feeling of having to leave a pet behind when going out of town. Whether it be for a vacation or work trip, pet owners need to know their animal is happy and in good hands.

Gallatin will soon have a new option for dog owners to give their furry friends a luxury vacation of their own. K9 Resorts opens its newest location at 2021 Gorden Crossing, Suite #103, later this month, making it the company’s first location in Tennessee. The luxury pet hotel offers a variety of boarding and daycare options for dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes.

“We are all pet owners ourselves, and we know the importance of treating pets like family,” said Kevin Allen, business partner and co-owner. “We believe this is a needed and wanted addition to the community for those who are focused on the care and pampering of their pets.”

The non-cage facility provides a unique experience for its canine clients, including a wide range of amenities, highly-trained and passionate staff, and cutting-edge technology.

Michael Remick, another business partner and local co-owner, said the resort makes cleanliness one of its top priorities. From the state-of-the-art air filtration system that provides fifteen air exchanges per hour, to the antimicrobial surfaces, dog parents can rest assured their pet is in a pristine environment.

The resort is also designed with playtime in mind. To be around other dogs, the staff requires each to pass an evaluation. Owners can choose group playtime for their dog or private playtime with trained staff. With either, K9 Resorts promises constant interaction for its clients.

“If we are boarding a dog, the only time they will be in their room is when they are eating or sleeping, and the rest of the time they will be in daycare,” said co-owner Anthony Bringas.

“Parents have a hard time picking them up because they love it so much! That gives them peace of mind that they don’t have to worry about their pet when they’re gone.”  - K. Allen

Along with cleanliness and playtime, the resort also prioritizes diet. Dogs are fed Blue Buffalo brand, a gastrointestinal food designed to be easy on the dog’s stomach. Clients can also choose to bring in their own food and any needed medications.

What dog wouldn’t love a vacation filled with all-day playtime, yummy food and a loving staff? Allen states that as the dogs become familiar with the resort, you can feel their excitement to come back each time. The resort even offers discounts for members of the military who are going on deployments and need to leave their dog at home.

While a number of co-owners and partners made this location possible in Gallatin, many of the resort’s owners live in our area and are looking forward to serving their local friends, families and neighbors. Angela McCluskey, the resort’s primary owner, says she’s thrilled the city she and her family love will be K9 Resorts’ newest home.

“We have lived here [for] twelve years, and we love it so much,”  McCluskey said. “I wanted to bring it to my community, so that’s why we picked Gallatin.”

Community members can be on the lookout for an official grand opening soon that will provide tours of the facility. In the meantime, the company is offering a variety of discounts for those who book before the facility opens.

ADVENTURE CANINE TRAINING’S RISE, UNITING EXPERTISE WITH STAR POWER AND COMMUNITY COMMITMENT

Adventure Canine Training has become a standout and leader in the dog training world, both within our area and across the country, recently combining their expertise with the glitz and glam of the entertainment industry. ACT’s influence spans various facets of the highly-technical canine training space. From collaborating with renowned country music artists to making high-profile appearances at major events throughout the year, ACT has seen their impact grow exponentially. Their exceptional talent and specialized training take center stage on a multitude of platforms, leaving a lasting impression on audiences everywhere while bringing some hometown pride to Sumner County!

Adventure Canine Training, born out of a deep love and connection with dogs, has swiftly ascended to new heights. While still maintaining an all-encompassing training program for individuals, ACT focuses on building an amazing bond between dogs and owners. Training in the early development stages is based on this, as well as ensuring a lifelong mutual relationship between canine and owner. It all began in college for Brooke O’Brien with the training of a special needs dog who couldn’t be trained using common methods. Traditional food items like treats did not work due to an esophageal disorder. This unique challenge led to the discovery of countless other ways to bring out the best in every dog, fostering a deep bond and a life full of fun and adventure together. Over the years, and through various training opportunities, challenges and public events, this expertise and dedication caught the attention of entertainment producers and directors, landing Adventure Canine Training on the sets of some high-profile music videos and commercials.

Their first major break was with country artists Maddie & Tae for the award-winning “Woman You Got” music video, which opened the doors to collaborations with other stars like Dolly Parton, Lainey Wilson and Yelawolf. Their work even culminated in a standout commercial for Tractor Supply Company and Purina that aired during this year’s Super Bowl!

What truly sets Adventure Canine Training apart is their unwavering commitment to the well-being of dogs. They believe in tailoring training to each individual dog’s needs, focusing on emotional well-being and strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners. Their motto, “Adventures are Meant to be Shared,” is a testament to their dedication to enabling dogs and owners to explore life together, from local cafes to wild trails and city streets, with confidence and reassurance.

Despite the glamor of working with celebrities, the heart of Adventure Canine Training remains the same: a deep love for dogs and a desire to see them thrive. They emphasize enriching activities over mere obedience, ensuring dogs live fulfilled, frustration-free lives. ACT is a beacon for dog owners seeking more than just a training program to be able to ensure a lifestyle of adventure and joy for their dogs.

The Adventure Canine Challenge 5K continues to grow as well, with exciting plans for Fall 2024, making them a dynamic and integral part of the Gallatin community!

EMPOWERING YOUTH THROUGH EXCELLENCE

There is a new dance squad among us, and they are turning heads while molding the hearts of our local young ladies in many different ways. The Mini Bison Belles, Sumner County’s first “mini” dance team, has quickly become an established dance team for local girls in grades 3-5 and has focused on the empowerment of today’s young ladies. Inspired by a deep love for dance and a desire to support the community, the Mini Bison Belles’ mission and initiatives aim to fill a gap in local dance programs to support

and enhance the successes of already established middle and high school dance teams in our area. The national championship win by Station Camp High School’s dance team last year was a powerful inspiration for many of these young dancers, who are able to tangibly see a path of elevating their dance opportunities as they grow older and enter middle and high school programs themselves.

With over 40 girls trying out in the first year for the Mini Belles, the local community’s enthusiasm and interest

Building Confidence and Community Through Dance, the Mini Bison Belles Way

has exploded around the young dance group. Leveraging social media and a strong, local support network, the Mini Belles offer an accessible entry into dance for girls of all experience levels who want to grow, learn and succeed. The current program promotes personal growth through dance, and it teaches vital life skills for young women, such as time management, teamwork and self confidence.

While their season runs from June to October, the Mini Belles have ambitious plans to keep dancers engaged year-round through active community involvement on many different fronts. Their commitment to continuous growth and community connection promises to inspire and uplift current and future dancers of all ages.
