Showcasing a Stunning Sense of Style
Style, whether in fashion, interior design or landscaping, is an intricate dance of creativity and individuality. As we step into the vibrant and enchanting world of style this month, we are excited to present our latest issue dedicated entirely to exploring the diverse facets of a stylish community. In a world that constantly bombards us with trends and influences, it is essential to remember that style is not merely about following the latest fads. It’s a reflection of one’s soul, echoed not only in the clothes we wear but also in the spaces we inhabit. It’s an art form that empowers individuals to tell their own stories and make meaningful statements without uttering a single word.
Interior design, landscaping, culinary arts and even automotive creativity, much like fashion, is a harmonious blend of aesthetics and expression, transforming areas into serene reflections of our inner world. With creativity and innovation in mind, our September Style and Design issue showcases local design experts and creative minds as luminaries in Gallatin, shaping the way we experience and interact with our surroundings. Whether indoors or outdoors, these experts are artisans of atmosphere, weaving together the fabric of our daily lives in ways that leave an indelible mark on our senses and souls.
We hope the treasury of insights in this issue takes you on a journey that unveils the art of self-expression and the significance of embracing individuality. Style isn’t just about clothes or a look, it’s about channeling confidence, communicating strong community and showing what it means to be stylish by our own definitions! As we immerse ourselves in the stories and tips, we gain not only a heightened understanding of fashion but also a newfound appreciation for the power of personal style to shape our lives.

Artistic Alchemy and Interior Brilliance with Binkley Nash
ARTICLE BY PATTI GORDON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PLUM POPPY PHOTOGRAPHY
Ashlee Nash is no stranger to creative styling and nailing the details. But owning and operating a local powerhouse furniture and interior design business seems to be what Ashlee was made for.
While in her mid-20s and establishing herself in the furniture and design industry, Ashlee graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in interior design. She worked at a residential furniture shop honing her own craft and learning the proverbial ropes. While an amazing experience in itself, it was here that she received the opportunity of a lifetime. When Mike Binkley, owner of Gallatin's Binkley Furniture House, was ready to retire,
he personally reached out to Ashlee to gauge her interest in carrying on the legacy of Sumner County's oldest furniture store. She jumped at the opportunity and has since confidently grown the capacity and capabilities of the business with grace and expertise.
Armed with her own knowledge, experience and ambition, Ashlee readily took on the challenge and even began adding her own flair to the business. Mr. Binkley guided her through the intricacies of now being a business owner and emphasized the importance of fostering customer relationships, which had always been at the core of their operations.

As a tribute to Mr. Binkley, and to honor the history of the business, Ashlee rebranded the store from Binkley Furniture House to, now, Binkley Nash Furniture and Design. This rebranding also brought about the addition of an on-site Interior Designer and a full design team, a concept rarely found at furniture storefronts.
Using her degree in interior design, Ashlee provides her services for commercial, residential and even new construction projects. She has extensive experience in designing new homes from the ground up and also offers local independent designers the opportunity to collaborate at the Binkley Nash showroom. Ashlee's portfolio includes a diverse range of projects from banks to funeral homes to high-rise rentals, modern and traditional homes, beachfront properties and luxury cabins in the Smoky Mountains. Additionally, Binkley Nash provides free, local deliveries and installations as a way to ensure her personal touch.
Ashlee also continued the Binkley Nash tradition of maintaining a family business. Ashlee’s mother, Tonya, serves as the store manager and assists with various projects. Her father, Dave, is responsible for managing the warehouse and coordinating deliveries. Her children, Anna Jayne and Rand, have the opportunity to create lasting memories by helping their mom and grandparents in the afternoons after school. Additionally, Ashlee's close family friend, Beth Brown, helps with office and warehouse needs. Ashlee continued to expand her team by hiring Gallatin native Chloe Collier Brooks, an in-house Interior Designer who obtained her degree in
interior design in Florence, Italy and has an eye for both local and international design.
Ashlee knows the importance of relationships: “I serve second and third generation clients that were served by Mr. Binkley. It’s an honor that these families treat me as one of their own and in return, they feel like family to me. I’ve had clients come in and rock my own babies as I help them with their design needs. My marketing is referral-based from my clients, and the relationships I build with them are important."
While Binkley Nash services and provides all aesthetic styles and furnishings, Ashlee says perhaps her favorite styling will always be the classic Southern look. “But, I don’t allow overtaking a client's home with what I want or prefer. I like to apply my knowledge and education to create a space that reflects what the client wants and loves.”
What are the future plans for Binkley Nash? "We have an established, ideal location. Additionally, my husband owns two funeral homes in Sumner County (Sumner Funeral and Cremation) keeping us constantly busy. We reside, attend church in and support the small businesses of Sumner County with a strong focus on giving back to our community."
Although Ashlee’s talent and hard work are what continue to draw clients to Binkley Nash, it's always her heart and sincere customer service that win them over. “I’m honored that I get to help people make a house feel like a home to them.”

LANDSCAPE ARTISTRY WITH BRIAN GRAY AND THE GROUNDS GUYS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
STYLING YOUR OUTDOOR CANVAS
Fall is on the horizon, teasing us with its imminent arrival, leading our hearts to flutter at the prospect of crisp breezes and endless outdoor escapades.
When it comes to the stylistic architecture outside of your home, Gallatin resident Brian Gray and locally-owned The Ground Guys have quickly become the most recognized outdoor, all-purpose landscaping, design and lighting provider in our area both in the residential and commercial space.
Whether you’re stepping into a fresh abode devoid of landscaping and image, or seeking to revitalize your existing outdoor haven, The Grounds Guys bring a revitalizing consultative method that collaborates with you while crafting a landscape that not only pleases the eye but also aligns seamlessly with your financial scope. By delving into your preferences and dislikes, TGG embarks on a journey to curate a space that resonates with your vision. Customer satisfaction is a top-priority for TGG and Brian makes sure every home or business owner is included in the process and strategies that come together for the design.
There are some beautiful trends being used right now (and also that are easy to maintain) that continue to make appearances around our area and as a staple of TGG. Limelight Hydrangeas and Oakleaf Hydrangeas are southern favorites, as well as the classic Crepe Myrtles and Azaleas, both that come in a variety of colors. Hollies and Monkey Grass add pops of deep greens and Evergreens are increasing in popularity to create a natural-looking privacy screen when needed. Ensuring your newly-adorned plants flourish in a state of blissful well-being hinges on proper hydration. Brian and his team of landscape experts excel in installing irrigation systems that seamlessly nourish and revitalize any outdoor space.
Beautiful plants aren’t the only speciality TGG takes pride in offering. At times, landscaping might be splendid but lacks a touch of flair to elevate its allure. The trend of incorporating permanent LED outdoor lighting has gained widespread popularity, casting a vibrant and sustainable glow on outdoor spaces. These LED lighting systems can be recessed and colored to match your home’s existing trim and work to highlight the elegance of the home or building. The colors of these lights can be changed seasonally, for holidays, gamedays, or even daily to suit your preference and can be controlled on an app on your phone. One super-hot trend currently is permanent LED lights installed on your boat dock or outdoor decking, creating a unique look on the water or backyard in the evenings!
Enhancing an already lush landscape, plant lighting also presents an additional means to up-style your outdoor space. Basking in the spotlight, your plants will thrive and you’ll love the sight as you arrive home after your evening endeavors on these early autumn nights.

Another option for the immediate gratification that we all desire is adding fresh mulch, fresh gravel or concrete curbing to enhance the look of your space. Concrete curbing is a new service to The Grounds Guys offerings this year and is a unique, low-maintenance element to add instant curb appeal to your yard space. The concrete curb can be colored and textured to look like realistic stone, tile, brick or you can choose the simple concrete look. This is a longterm solution to create borders around garden beds, playgrounds, sandboxes or trees. It can be utilized as an accent piece, colored and styled to match the color of your home, the existing walkways, or even the trim of your home! Curbing only takes a few days or less to create and finish and lasts for many years to come with practically no maintenance! Brian suggests waiting until late September or October to add new plants to your yard but any of the other options can be installed at any time.
CONTINUED > 21 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/GALLATIN SEPTEMBER 2023
As The Grounds Guys move into the busy Christmas season, one of their unique offerings is a white-glove Christmas light service complete with custom-made Christmas lights that are designed exclusively for your home or building. Get that classic Christmas look without any of the stress or having to plan, execute and install holiday lighting on our own. TGG provides all materials, all installation, maintenance and end-of-season takedown. One of the best parts of this white-glove service is that they are able to store your custom-made Christmas lights at their facility throughout the year so that reinstallation is never an issue when Christmas season rolls around again, year after year!
Our homes and businesses are so much more than just where we live or work; they are also an outward way to creatively express pride and community when we take the time to style and cultivate these areas in unique ways. With just a little bit of dreaming, while looping in experts like Brian and The Grounds Guys, our homes, offices, outdoor spaces, docks and decks can easily become a focal point for the neighborhood and an amazing, external way to show off and enjoy some truly impressive outdoor creations!

Where Professional and Personal Passions Meet
A Sit Down with Susan Greene and Jana
Dee Wade
ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
INSPIRED BY | LIFE +
CULTURE

Finding passion in life is what defines us. While there are many pathways and seasons of life we all go through, professional and personal passions tend to intersect at the most opportune and defining moments. For two dynamic women in our area, passions intersect by taking care of their real estate clients in the marketplace while simultaneously making a positive impact on our community.
The individual journeys for Susan Greene and Jana Dee Wade from where they started to where they are now are vastly different. Real estate runs in the family for Susan. Both of her parents were Realtors so it made sense for her to follow that same pathway of success-one that has now spanned for over 48 years for her as well. Separately, Jana Dee had a remarkable 30-year journey as the owner of a body-care manufacturing and distribution company. Then, as fate would have it, real estate found her. Although both paths to being respected experts in our area were different, their mission is (and always has been) the same: to serve their community and clients while striving to provide exceptional service to individuals and families who are embarking on a new journey in one of the biggest investments of their lifetime.
Susan and Jana Dee sat down with Gallatin Lifestyle to share about their professional and personal endeavors:
GL: WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR CHOOSING GALLATIN FOR YOUR OFFICE LOCATION?
Susan: When Harold Crye, Co-Founder of Crye-Leike, asked me to be the Managing Broker of the Gallatin office, I asked the same question! Being a brilliant leader and visionary, he saw the growth potential in Gallatin and thought the timing was perfect for us to be in the Gallatin Market and since August 2016, we’ve served the Gallatin community.
GL: THE GALLATIN AREA HAS SEEN TREMENDOUS GROWTH OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. HOW DO YOU SEE THE COMMUNITY EVOLVING OVER THE NEXT DECADE OR MORE?
Jana Dee: Gallatin and the Greater Nashville area are experiencing continuous growth and expansion. Through my work with Crye-Leike Relocation, I’ve noticed a significant influx of people moving into Middle Tennessee compared to those leaving. The reasons behind this trend are evident: individuals come to Gallatin and Sumner County for the thriving economy, abundant job opportunities, excellent schools and a fulfilling way of life. The warmth and hospitality of the friendly people residing here make it a truly exceptional place to call home. Gallatin is, without a doubt, the best of the best!
GL: NAVIGATING THE HOME BUYING PROCESS CAN BE A BIT COMPLEX FOR FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS. HOW DO YOU HELP EASE THAT PROCESS?
Jana Dee: The process can be really overwhelming, especially for first-time buyers because it’s constantly changing. That’s why it’s so important to guide my clients through each step, from pre-approval to finding their dream home, closing the deal and finally moving in. I make it a priority to ensure my first-time buyers feel at ease by explaining the entire process in a way that they can understand and feel confident about their decisions. This better ensures peace of mind in their overall home buying experience.
GL: UNDERSTANDING CLIENTS’ NEEDS AND PREFERENCES IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE. HOW DO YOU APPROACH HELPING YOUR CLIENTS FIND A PROPERTY?
Susan: Listening first and always! Our world is full of information overload. I want to build relationships with my clients and in doing so, I listen and
“I love and take pride in Gallatin. I love the spirit! When you walk in your bank, a restaurant, stores on the square, local businesses, they know you...and if they don’t know you, they will.”

-Susan Greene
then guide them the entire way through the process. In many cases, my buyers and sellers are families I have known for a long time and we have developed relationships with one another. They may be buying their first home, a bigger home to accommodate more people, downsizing to a smaller home or even selling family properties that are no longer needed. I consider what I do a ministry of service in what I know best: real estate.
GL: OUR GALLATIN COMMUNITY IS STRONG! WHAT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS OR NON-PROFITS ARE NEAR AND DEAR TO THE CRYE-LEIKE GALLATIN OFFICE?
Susan and Jana Dee: When our office opened, we started an annual Toy Drive in 2016 for Gallatin Day Care. We arrange for collection boxes to be placed in multiple businesses throughout the community and the Toy Drive has grown every year! Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors
The Stylish Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, “Oh, Grow Up!”
Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since king Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls”. Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall”. Designers have dubbed them “statement walls”. But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do - as “vertical gardens”.
A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade.
The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well.
Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress.
Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well.
As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.

THE little BLACK DRESS
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”

The Magic Dragon
Make a Statement With This Stylish Cocktail
INSTRUCTIONS
Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).

THE POWER OF WALKING: EMBRACING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE WITH EVERY STEP
By Dr. Jesse Davenport, PT, DPT
In a fast-paced world dominated by technology and convenience, it's easy to overlook the simplest form of physical activity – walking. The Movement Shop invites you to rediscover the profound benefits of walking and how it can positively impact your overall well-being.
The Science Behind Walking: Studies have consistently shown that walking is not just a basic mode of transportation; it's a gateway to improved physical and mental health. According to research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), regular walking can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can make a remarkable difference.
Mind and Body Harmony: Walking isn't solely about burning calories – it's about achieving a holistic balance between the mind and body. Engaging in a daily walking routine releases endorphins, often referred to as "feel-good hormones," which alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. The serene pace of walking offers an opportunity for introspection and mindfulness, allowing you to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with yourself.
Let's delve into the numbers that underscore the undeniable benefits of walking:
1. Heart Health: A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine revealed that regular walkers have a 30% lower risk of heart disease compared to those who lead sedentary lives.
2. Longevity: Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that walking can add up to seven years to your life. It's a small investment for a longer, healthier future.
3. Mental Clarity: A Stanford University study found that walking boosts creative thinking by up to 60%. Whether you're solving a problem or seeking inspiration, a walk can spark your imagination.
4. Bone Health: Walking is a weight-bearing exercise that helps strengthen bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women.
In a world where the allure of technological advancement often overshadows the basics, walking remains a timeless and essential activity that can transform your life. Embrace the power of walking – it's not just a physical movement, but a step towards a healthier, happier you. Visit The Movement Shop today and take the first step towards a brighter future, one stride at a time.
