An Exploration Mindset In the busy world we live in today, our pace of life is often frantic, our minds are always busy and we’re always doing the most. Frenetic schedules, friends, families, jobs and extracurriculars consume us regularly. However, to stay at our best, we must take the time to move in a direction that keeps us wondering, discovering and learning through exploration as well. A challenged mind, body, soul and spirit is exactly how we do that! As springtime is upon us, it’s a time of optimism and hope, warmer weather, longer days and new opportunities. Take a journey into this month’s issue through Gallatin’s historic places, a wanderlust of enchanted trails full of lush gardens and stunning views and the motivation to keep moving in unique ways. Our hope is that you will make room for exploration and prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life to enjoy a true repose of new and exciting experiences. Lose yourself on a trail or in a book, schedule that trip you’ve been thinking about or make time for the things that you have considered but often have come last on the list of things to do or don’t make it onto the calendar at all. Explore new places, try new things and create unique and unforgettable experiences that you can look back on with fondness, wonder and amazement! Getting Gallatin moving is Dr. Jesse Davenport’s passion! “Our mission is to ignite the human spirit through movement. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible and move them to make positive changes to their health and wellness,” he proudly proclaims. Gone are the days when rigid exercise regimes are put in place to obtain a “healthy” lifestyle. Now, Dr. Davenport suggests that a person finds a complete system of movement that works for them and keeps every part of life and body active. TMS has quickly become a one-stop shop that houses experts in all things movement to help people from all walks of life sustain safe movement, full of life, great purpose and meaningful mechanics. Joining Dr. Davenport and Dr. Crider, The Movement Shop has rapidly added to their team of experts who strive to positively impact many aspects of your movement. Robert Boswell, PTA, supports so many good movement efforts and is passionate about helping maximize the potential of everyone from seniors to athletes. Shannon Slayton is a Wellness Coach with a passion to help build custom plans of action to guide clients on a journey of improved total wellness while also identifying goals and barriers to your wellness goals. Being a mobile clinic with providers who will physically meet you where you are is another aspect that sets TMS apart. For those patients who are unable to make it into the clinic, the clinic comes to you! Dr. Kristi Roland and Lauri Salani, PT, with a strong background in neurological care, are part of the mobile clinic staff who keep the wheels moving and continue to add to the local capabilities of TMS. The mix of different specialists on staff and the uniqueness of the mobile clinic are just a few of the exciting services that The Movement Shop offers. For area seniors, it's recommended to stay as active as possible. Plan and invest in mobility goals as if you were investing in retirement. A quick movement inventory below can help assess and start a baseline of total physical health: • Can I jump/hop? • Can I get off the floor? • Can I walk and keep up with others? • Can I get out of a chair without having to push up with my hands? • Do I know how to fall safely? • Do I already struggle with what I love to do? • Is my home safe? If you can’t do one or more of the items listed, Dr. Davenport recommends setting up a consult and conversation so they can help connect you with the appropriate resources and information. There is an epidemic of a lack of movement in our society; we are designed to move and not to stay still. You have to start somewhere in your movement journey. History Strong The Historic Sites “Kickoff” in April each year!

The days are getting longer and the weather is warming as spring has finally arrived. Most historic sites in Gallatin and Sumner County are now open for the 2023 season! Sumner County is rich in history, making the Sumner County Museum a great place to start exploring. The museum is located a block from Gallatin’s downtown square at 183 W. Main Street, directly behind Trousdale Place, yet another historic Sumner County treasure! The Sumner County Museum has been around since 1981 thanks to the initial efforts of local businessmen John Garrott, Robert Ramsey and others, and is full of artifacts that tell stories about our local past. Some of the museum’s exhibits include Native Americans, Longhunters, blacksmithing, textiles, tinsmithing, gunsmithing, war, clothing, farming and agriculture, the Sumner County Drive-In, transportation and so much more. One can even find Gallatin’s first stop light and first pump fire engine in the basement. Did you know the world’s first airmail delivery was made from Nashville to Gallatin in 1877? Swing by to find out what was used to make that delivery. The Sumner County Museum hosts several events each year, including the Stonewall Food and Music Festival on April 15th and Pistols, Petals & Pearls on May 20th. The museum also offers educational programming including the Hidden History Passport and the Traveling Trunk. Cragfont Cragfont was the home of General James Winchester, a brigadier general in the War of 1812. He also co-founded Memphis. The home is located in Castalian Springs at 200 Cragfont Road. The house sits atop a bluff overlooking Bledsoe Creek and was built between 1798 and 1802. It is said to be the finest mansion built on the Tennessee frontier at that time. Historic Rose Mont is a Palladian, Greek revival mansion built by Judge Josephus Conn Guild in 1836 on his plantation of 500 local acres. It is located at 810 South Water Avenue in Gallatin. The name Rose Mont stems from the once exquisite rose garden that was located on the north side of the home. What is now a bridal suite overlooks a smaller replication of the original rose garden. Trousdale Place is a handsome Federalstyle, two-story brick house nestled in the heart of downtown Gallatin at 183 West Main Street. It was built by John Bowen around 1813 and purchased in 1822 by William Trousdale, Governor of Tennessee from 1849-1851. William was known as the warhorse of Sumner County. Historic Stonewall was built in the 1830s by Dr. Levi Ring, headmaster of Transmontania Academy and donated to the museum by founder John Garrott in 2015. Stonewall is available for overnight stays allowing guests to immerse themselves in history with modern-day comforts. It’s furnished as it would have been in the 1850s with modern bedding and bath accommodations. Guests have use of the entire home. Sumner County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a nonprofit that provides trained volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect and are under the jurisdiction of the court system. CASA’s mission is to recruit, train and supervise diverse volunteers who serve as advocates for children involved in court proceedings primarily as the result of abuse and/or neglect. Sumner County Juvenile Court Judge David Howard has referred to CASA volunteers as the “eyes and ears of the court.” Volunteers work to ensure that the needs of children are met and their rights are protected and see their CASA children monthly as they continue to speak with the adults who are a part of the program regularly. Staff and volunteers attend court hearings, foster care review boards and Department of Children’s Services meetings and work as part of the team as the children navigate the road to permanence. The children that CASA serves are part of our community. The cases appointed have become more disturbing and children are experiencing more trauma than ever. The goal of CASA is to help ensure that every child in the child welfare system has a safe, permanent and nurturing home. One consistent, caring adult makes a difference and that is what CASA provides to each child. By providing a trained advocate who is solely focused on the child’s best interests, CASA aims to improve the outcomes for children in foster care and reduce the amount of time they spend in the system.

Volunteering to be a constant and caring adult in a child’s life and work to ensure that their needs are met and their rights are protected is one of the most important ways to support CASA. Volunteering provides a voice and builds relationships with the children to ensure trust. Exploring is a fundamental human experience that has been a driving force behind some of the greatest discoveries in history. Whether it’s visiting new places or simply immersing yourself in a different culture, exploring can be life-changing and transformative. When we visit a new place, we are exposed to different ways of living and thinking, broadening our understanding of the world. One of the South’s most popular attractions known for its unique geological and botanical wonders is a mere two and a half hour drive from Gallatin in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, just outside of Chattanooga. Rock City Gardens’ history as a world-famous tourist attraction dates back to the days of the Great Depression, but its history as a marvel of nature stretches back much further. Rock City remained wellknown to hikers and geologists throughout the latter portion of the 1800s but it would take the dawning of a new century before the fabulous Rock City reached its full potential.

While the man who eventually made Rock City a household name, Garnet Carter, dabbled in different business ventures, Garnet’s wife, Frieda, began a project of her own. The 700 acres of Fairyland which originally encompassed the legendary Rocky City, was developed into a grandiose rock garden. When the Great Depression hit, Garnet’s other business ventures fell through and Frieda’s endeavor with Rock City had possibilities. She took to marking a trail that wound around giant rock formations ending at the outcropping known as Lover’s Leap. She had also collected wildflowers and other plants and planted them along the trail. Rock City first opened to the public on May 21, 1932, when Garnet and Frieda decided to share their “backyard” with guests some 90 years ago. Since the mountain-top attraction wasn’t located in a place where people would be passing by and taking notice organically, Garnet came up with the brilliant idea to enlist the help of a young sign painter named Clark Byers, who was hired to travel the nation’s highways and offer to paint farmer’s barns in exchange for letting them paint three simple words upon the barns, as well: See Rock City. The distinctive black-and-white signs appeared as far north as Michigan and as far west as Texas and many still standing today as you drive around for miles in any direction! From the inception of Garnet’s idea, it soon began to produce the desired effect and by the end of the 1930s, more travelers than ever visited Rock City Gardens, greatly attributable to their initial marketing campaign! Over the years, several features have been added including the popular Fairyland Caverns, Mother Goose Village, the Cornerstone Station, as well as a myriad of shops and restaurants. Additionally, several annual events such as Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights bring a variety of guests. The gardens that Frieda so lovingly planted have also grown through the

years to include various species of wildflowers, shrubs and trees. Rock City Gardens has become a true American icon of scenery and serenity. Under the leadership of Doug Chapin, a fourth-generation descendant of Garnet and Frieda, Rock City’s mission is to “create memories worth repeating for our guests and our partners.” With its nostalgic history, as well as its continual expansion for the future, Rock City Gardens has earned its reputation as a world-class destination and promises to be for generations to come. Each year more than a half million people visit the attraction to enjoy the many natural splendors that flourish. The enchanted, 4,100foot walking trail features massive ancient rock formations, caves, a magnificent cascading waterfall and over 400 species of lush plants and flowers with a walkway across the swinga-long bridge that spans nearly 200 feet and where seven states can be seen from one single vantage lookout point! Rock City continues to be a local and national treasure!

1. Start a lawn fertilization program. The Grounds Guys recommend multiple treatments for the most common fescue turf in our area. This includes pre-emergent, fertilizations, post-emergent and weed control all performed at the appropriate time during the season. 2. Weed and clear debris from lawn and landscape beds. This includes raking up any debris left on the lawn over the winter and any leaves in the landscaping beds. Inspect shrub and tree health. Our area experienced a very difficult cold stretch in December of 2022 and shrubs and trees are now showing the effects. Early spring is the perfect time to make those replacements as the temperatures are ideal for planting, but don’t wait too long as ground temperatures will be rising to make it more difficult for newly planted materials to establish themselves. 3. Refresh or replace your mulch or other landscape bed materials. Doing this once in the spring and once in the very early fall is recommended. Although it’s not normally necessary to remove the old materials unless it has been years since it’s been done. Prevent “mulch volcanoes” on trees. Mulch should be low and level for the best health of your trees. 4. Start up your irrigation system for the season: fully-tuned and serviced. Make sure your sprinkler heads are reaching into the areas intended and inspect for broken or leaking parts. Adjust run times and make sure the programming is set for the appropriate days and times.
